Due to real-life obligations, I am taking a long break from Magic which may include missing the local Legacy GP. Apologies for not being able to keep my threads updated.
I still think that SCG would have needed a major change anyways in their tournament structure. You'd too often see the Standard Top8 going incredibly long in the mornings. And the Legacy Top8 breaking well beyond midnight. With the Standard Top8 beginning so early in the morning; meaning SCG staff need to set up the entire hall hours beforehand. And the Legacy Top8 ending so late; meaning SCG staff must stay beyond midnight breaking down the equipment. You are looking at extremely long workdays for everyone involved including the players. How many times can SCG ask its staff to work 12-15 hours almost every single Sunday? These tournaments are grueling enough already. Imagine being a player who gets into the Top 8 of a Saturday/Sunday SCG event.
They had to figure out a way to scale down their events. Which means less money for them unless they compensate by charging more or figuring out a way to attract many new players. The SCG Open series was actually overcrowded with matches based on how often they'd overrun their events with time. So them taking their opens and making it only one major event per weekend was expected by a lot of people.
I think their mistake was emphasizing so much Standard and expecting growth. The smart approach would have been to corner the market on Legacy AND/OR Modern. They should have reached out to Wizards and said "we'd like SCG to be the official year round Legacy Grand Prix Circuit". Where Wizards does all Standard/Modern/Limited events and SCG has a monopoly on all North American Legacy tournaments. Run two circuits each with their own Pro Tour/Championship. Wizards has no clue how to run anything Legacy related so it's no loss for them anyways.

Here, I explain why Legacy attendance numbers are even more impressive than the numbers appear and why SCG better support for our format as they once had: http://lordofthepit23.blogspot.com/2015/01/comprehensive-analysis-of-scg.html
