Legacy is traditional Dark Ritual Force of Will Magic. Modern is, well, modern Magic with insane goodstuff creatures and Cryptic Commands. Both are different, both are fun.
I like Modern's format diversity. You can show up playing anything like Restore Balance combo to Jund and Top 8 a tournament. There are at least 20 entirely different strategies that are capable of winning a major event.

UW Value Control only has like 4-5 cards in common with Grixis Control.

My deck stomps 2 of them, yet can't really beat BUG delver. And even if you want to collapse it down then there are still a lot of options... I didn't even list about 30 decks that could top 8 a smaller event like a PIQ but not a GP that do have these radically different wincons like you were talking about: Aluren, Dredge, Loam Pox, Goblin Prison, Merfolk, etc.
Legacy has more viable decks, and more decks that attack from different angles than modern, so please don't spout nonsense. If you like modern more then more power to you. I really enjoy both formats quite honestly

The issue is that Legacy has multiple barriers to entry. There may be a lot of players who actually want to play Legacy, but if you are a legacy player with extra staples for trade, what are you actually trading them for? Most likely other legacy staples. Interested players likely do not have the trades to be able to trade into blue duals, fow, cradle, wasteland, port, jtms, etc.
I didn't even list about 30 decks that could top 8 a smaller event like a PIQ but not a GP that do have these radically different wincons like you were talking about: Aluren, Dredge, Loam Pox, Goblin Prison, Merfolk, etc.
Legacy has more viable decks, and more decks that attack from different angles than modern, so please don't spout nonsense. If you like modern more then more power to you. I really enjoy both formats quite honestly

I do not like Modern just due to the principle of why it exist. Modern exists because Wizards is scared of dealing with the reserved list and had to find a way to make a format that supports older cards. Its all political and financial. Any magic format that's basis is around how to sell packs is not going to be balanced since its strictly sales driven and not driven by balancing/the integrity of the game.
I think they also wanted a non-rotating format that caters to the majority of players who don't enjoy feel bad losses. Twin might be in obnoxious, but it doesn't kill so fast that the opponent feels they "didn't get to play magic".
WotC have really pushed midrange lately - they like for midrange to be big because more people end up needing the same "good-stuff" stàples, which drives up prices. In the older days, eg, only Solar Flare needs Akroma, only Storm needed Lotus Bloom, etc. So it took less opened product to support a vibrant tournament scene.
The result is a generation of players who love midrange very much. Midrange decks tend to be a good balance of answers and threats, and midrangers are hence accustomed to their decks (potentially) having an answer for everything. This is why (I speculate) newer players are often turned off by Legacy more so than seasoned players who learned the game when combo, aggro, and control worked a bit like rock/paper/scissors. People like what they are used to.
The hard truth is legacy is dying and modern is prospering.
Biggest shop scg is switching to modern and the people follow. Wich is logical. Many people dont want to buy 4 force of wills and duals at high price levels. There will always be legacy just like there is vintage, it will just become something for a smaller group compared to modern wich is the trend.
Amazing how wotc did away with the reprint ban list by just catering to modern from now on... Probaly talked about it with scg. And thats ok with me.
Proof? Underground seas price has been faling. I predict duals to get cheaper the next years until they stabilise on high yet lower then now levels.
I agree with this, however, I also want to point out something else which could possibly lead to Legacy's lack of love these days, but let me reiterate a point you made in your post. The first reason why one would have such a distaste to Legacy is the price of some of Legacy's staples. For example:
I play mono black pox and I cry myself to sleep every night because of Tabernacle.
Now for the second reason, which is a personal opinion of mine. Local hobby shops do not support the format enough, and what I mean is the thick headedness of some shop owners. There are a number of locals within 10-30 miles of where I reside that support Legacy, however, out of the 10 shops, only two of them allow proxies to be used. One shop allows unlimited proxies which gets the most players, while the other allows up to 15 which brings in about 15-20 people a week. There is this notion among magic players who play legacy that if one wants to play legacy then one most pick up a second mortgage on their home just to play with the "big boys". Is this the mindset of every Legacy player? Absolutely not! But, there are these stubborn people who follow this way of logical thinking and some of them are card shop owners/work at a hobby shop. Also, they don't advertise enough via social media. Word of mouth isn't as good as it used to be. Now that we're in an age of peripherals glued to luminescent glass screens, social activity has gone down a lot. People don't talk as much, but they spend their time on facebook, instgram, snapchat, and their favorite Adult entertainment sites. I feel as though more needs to be done to keep this format alive. Legacy players support their format, but they need to put more effort now a days. One can't expect results if one doesn't commit. That goes with pretty much anything in life.
The third and final factor is that Modern is just a more popular format, and now WotC are supporting it more because of this, which is another point you made already that I'm reiterating. This goes back to the prices of cards for Legacy. The second hand market for legacy cards is, and sorry for my vulgarity, ******* RETARDED!!! Outside of Tarmogoyf, Jace, the Mind Sculptor(Not sure if he's legal, because I don't participate in modern. I just know it's popular.), and Liliana of the Veil, most Modern cards are affordable (Below $100). When I go into a hobby shop and there is an array of MTG players playing MTG, I join in on the fun. I sit down and converse with a majority of them and most of them ask, "Hey, man. What format do you play?". I respond, "I play Legacy.". Their response usually sounds like this, "Oh. That's the format that allows more cards than modern that's really expensive, right?". The second hand value of some of these cards NEEDS to change if we want more people to play Legacy. Leave the expensive cards to Vintage.

The forum users is not a good indication. A lot Legacy players frequent the Source for Legacy information and that place is still going strong. Given a number of us frequent both sites, but still sheer users in one of many internet forums is not enough.

There is also a minor snowball effect. Plenty of people would play if there was a local scene, so 2 guys starting a weekly game will quickly turn into 8 guys.
I just finished my first Legacy deck. I have been surprised and delighted by how many people actually play regularly around me. Everyone I've met really passionate about the format. Heck, there's a LGS by me that runs Legacy FNMs. Just play what you love and follow your passion. Things will work themselves out.
The problem with Legacy is people like me are killing the format. Play legacy and get super passionate. Then own all 40 dual lands... then stop playing for like 3 years lol.
Expect an uptick in Legacy this month because Modern has been kind of ruined by OGW. I have the cards for both, but actually prefer to play Modern due to the increased deck diversity. Legacy is fun and skill-testing, but too many decks share the same blue cards.

I am just a casual player and honestly the interactions between format is lost on me for the most part but from my observation I think that some Modern players might see their format as too shaky in regard to regular bannings. Maybe they see Legacy as the more stable option since the long term effects of new sets have less of an impact on Legacy. Perhaps the disparity between costs in regard to getting into Legacy as opposed to modern are holding back less people know who might think that a format (Legacy) that lets players use most of the cards in Modern in some capacity but feels the sting of bannings less would appear to be more interesting in the long term.
I just got into Modern a few months ago. My meta is large and diverse, but I prefer Legacy still.

I agree that there is a problem with Legacy that is keeping more people from joining. Honestly, I played Modern for a few years, and while I still think it is a great format, it's just not as interesting to me as Legacy is. Of course, building a Modern mana base is extremely less expensive than building a Legacy one, and I think that is the main issue with the older format.
One point that can't really be debated is diversity. Legacy is a more diverse format than Modern because there are more cards and therefore more decks.
On topic of Legacy gaining ground, some anecdotal evidence. From the three players in my close play group, we represented almost all of the decks in the modern metagame and a few fringe decks besides. On MTGS Modern forum's classification scheme we could build all of the Tier 1/2 decks and several of the Developing Competitive decks (we didn't touch things like Forest Belcher or Restore Balance combo, but had almost all of the rest).
Pod was my main deck and it was banned last year. Another player piloted Twin as his main deck and it's obviously gone now too. With the OGW powered Eldrazi decks following so soon after the demise of Twin, we are taking a good hard look at taking the plunge into legacy, at least to supplement our modern play. As a reaction to how the format is being managed rather than not wanting build against the eldrazi menace.
I just ordered the last cards I needed to finish a junk nic fit list (sue me, I played pod) while my buddies have been acquiring some DnT and miracles pieces. I figure a lot of modern players grumbling about moving to legacy is all talk, but as for myself, I'm doing research on Cabal Therapy technique.

A little late to the party here but I feel a few of my friends and myself have begun buying into Legacy (or back in, in the case of one of them) because of the 'revival' of the local Legacy community (Auckland, New Zealand) with one or two key individuals actively pushing for one or two events a month to be held, and then help people play at them. A few of the players regularly lend out legacy staples or decks to allow others to play, whilst at the same time confirming with one of the local stores that this store will be running events.
From this coming around in the last few months, one of my friends bought/traded back in Stoneblade, I've bought into and completed Death and Taxes, one friend bought into Elves and another added U/R Delver and Eldrazi to his decks to call upon (having started playing Burn). For me, having people willing to lend out cards to complete strangers was a big thing. I had just completed Death and Taxes with the exception of 3 Karakas' when the opportunity to play at one of these Legacy events came up, with one of the guys able to lend me two Karakas' to give me the opportunity to play the deck. I ended up going 2-3 in the end, but the opportunity to play and marvel at Legacy justified myself buying into this format. I came 4-0 at my most recent event and was stoked with this.
Certainly not easy to acquire some of the lands where I am (many of the dual lands pop up sparingly for sale), but I'm picking up the lands for Maverick as they come in for sale. A slow process but it's happening (singletons of Bayou, Savannah and Scrubland acquired so far).
My lgs sees an influx on new legacy players right now. Eternal masters was good in that aspect, and conspiricy 2 will add to that.
Also, Eldrazi as a new legacy deck allowed players to join the format, some modern infect players are converting now with the berserk reprint.
Sure, most of that players play lists that lack duals, but they played suboptimal lists in modern too. In my area, legacy is more alive than for years.
this seems to very much be the case now. EMA and Conspiracy increased the availability of some cards, while Eldrazi has a lot of creatures that are in newer sets
Legacy and Vintage are not dying formats there popularity goes up and Down in periods. But it is a way more logical mindset out of the major Magic Formats to not spend Money on Standard because even if you only play Budget decks all those 30 dollar decks all that Money is going to add up. While in Modern, Legacy and Vintage you can buy a single deck and never have to worry about Cards losing much price or getting banned, even though it`s way harder for Things to get banned in Vintage and Legacy then it is for stuff to get banned inn Modern. And the fact that many Abzan and Jund decks in Modern are both more expesive then Dark Depths, Burn, Reanimator(Red\Black),Dredge, And Powerless Eldrazi in Vintage. Just proves that People could get into those formats if they actually did there Research and lookt at deck prices. So People could easily get into Legacy and Vintage(With powerless eldrazi) if they wanted to
Legacy and Vintage are very popular if you look for the meta. Walk into a random LGS and you might be pressed to find these players, but if you tap into social media or know a well known local who plays then you might get into their circle. most of the people who say legacy/vintage are dying formats don't even play these formats and are just wallflowers.

"Pouring in" might not be the phrase to use, but yes it's a final resting ground for players, as they filter in through Standard/Limited --> Modern --> Legacy.

There is this notion among magic players who play legacy that if one wants to play legacy then one most pick up a second mortgage on their home just to play with the "big boys". Is this the mindset of every Legacy player? Absolutely not! But, there are these stubborn people who follow this way of logical thinking and some of them are card shop owners/work at a hobby shop. Also, they don't advertise enough via social media. Word of mouth isn't as good as it used to be. Now that we're in an age of peripherals glued to luminescent glass screens, social activity has gone down a lot. People don't talk as much, but they spend their time on facebook, instgram, snapchat, and their favorite Adult entertainment sites. I feel as though more needs to be done to keep this format alive. Legacy players support their format, but they need to put more effort now a days. One can't expect results if one doesn't commit. That goes with pretty much anything in life.
The third and final factor is that Modern is just a more popular format, and now WotC are supporting it more because of this, which is another point you made already that I'm reiterating. This goes back to the prices of cards for Legacy. The second hand market for legacy cards is, and sorry for my vulgarity, ******* RETARDED!!! Outside of Tarmogoyf, Jace, the Mind Sculptor(Not sure if he's legal, because I don't participate in modern. I just know it's popular.), and Liliana of the Veil, most Modern cards are affordable (Below $100). When I go into a hobby shop and there is an array of MTG players playing MTG, I join in on the fun. I sit down and converse with a majority of them and most of them ask, "Hey, man. What format do you play?". I respond, "I play Legacy.". Their response usually sounds like this, "Oh. That's the format that allows more cards than modern that's really expensive, right?". The second hand value of some of these cards NEEDS to change if we want more people to play Legacy. Leave the expensive cards to Vintage.
The forum users is not a good indication. A lot Legacy players frequent the Source for Legacy information and that place is still going strong. Given a number of us frequent both sites, but still sheer users in one of many internet forums is not enough.

There is also a minor snowball effect. Plenty of people would play if there was a local scene, so 2 guys starting a weekly game will quickly turn into 8 guys.

I just got into Modern a few months ago. My meta is large and diverse, but I prefer Legacy still.

One point that can't really be debated is diversity. Legacy is a more diverse format than Modern because there are more cards and therefore more decks.
Pod was my main deck and it was banned last year. Another player piloted Twin as his main deck and it's obviously gone now too. With the OGW powered Eldrazi decks following so soon after the demise of Twin, we are taking a good hard look at taking the plunge into legacy, at least to supplement our modern play. As a reaction to how the format is being managed rather than not wanting build against the eldrazi menace.
I just ordered the last cards I needed to finish a junk nic fit list (sue me, I played pod) while my buddies have been acquiring some DnT and miracles pieces. I figure a lot of modern players grumbling about moving to legacy is all talk, but as for myself, I'm doing research on Cabal Therapy technique.

From this coming around in the last few months, one of my friends bought/traded back in Stoneblade, I've bought into and completed Death and Taxes, one friend bought into Elves and another added U/R Delver and Eldrazi to his decks to call upon (having started playing Burn). For me, having people willing to lend out cards to complete strangers was a big thing. I had just completed Death and Taxes with the exception of 3 Karakas' when the opportunity to play at one of these Legacy events came up, with one of the guys able to lend me two Karakas' to give me the opportunity to play the deck. I ended up going 2-3 in the end, but the opportunity to play and marvel at Legacy justified myself buying into this format. I came 4-0 at my most recent event and was stoked with this.
Certainly not easy to acquire some of the lands where I am (many of the dual lands pop up sparingly for sale), but I'm picking up the lands for Maverick as they come in for sale. A slow process but it's happening (singletons of Bayou, Savannah and Scrubland acquired so far).

Staffthis seems to very much be the case now. EMA and Conspiracy increased the availability of some cards, while Eldrazi has a lot of creatures that are in newer sets

People are pouring into Legacy especially from Modern. Some people say it's because Modern also now has become expensive. I don't think this is the case. It is plainly because Modern and Standard are less enjoyable formats, and people flock over to Legacy no matter how desperately WotC tries to shove Standard and Limited down peoples throats.
"Pouring in" might not be the phrase to use, but yes it's a final resting ground for players, as they filter in through Standard/Limited --> Modern --> Legacy.
