If you agree with these changes, then to each their own and I have no hard feelings. However, I find them appalling. Legacy is not dying, but being killed. We need to let SCG know that this is a mistake. Make a comment, tell them how you feel. These changes are confusing considering the Grand Prix turnout that we just had, and I cannot see it going well for them in long run. Many have already begun to voice their protest.
I am not shocked. By far Standard always has the highest turnout of players so that is what they are going to promote. At least the system does not remove Legacy Opens completely and it does add in a few Modern Opens which we previously lacked. I do find it kind of silly to spread the main event over two days (outside of the day two top 8 they have been doing all along). Protesting it will likely not change the overall format shift of one Open and two Premier events, however if may make them add in a few more Modern and Legacy Opens over the course of the season (it will remain Standard heavy regardless).

A bit strange that they're essentially just creating a second GP circuit (which only strengthens my suspicion that WotC is eventually going to transition the GP circuit to SCG).
I've seen a lot of people complaining that they don't get to WATCH as many Legacy Opens, but not a whole lot of people saying that they don't get to give SCG $50 to PLAY in as many Legacy Opens.
It isn't being killed at 5k is still a moderately sized tournament but I vehemently disagree with the changes. Too much damn standard in general. The GP New Jersey turnout was spectacular and then they do this. Like, what? People play standard just because it's a PT format but they want to see legacy way more coverage wise. The 2 day structure of saturday standard sunday legacy was perfectly fine if people didn't want to play too many rounds of standard maybe they shouldn't sign up for the tournament in the first place.

"Yawgmoth," Freyalise whispered as she set the bomb, "now you will pay for your treachery."
My biggest issue with the new formatting is how few Legacy and Modern Opens there are compared to Standard ones. 14 Standard Opens with only 3 Legacy Opens and 2 Modern over the course of 6 months is ridiculous. That's 3 times as many Standard Opens as Legacy and Modern combined. If you're going to change your formatting to include an extra format, try using it more than twice.
The 2 day format seriously messes with the travel plans of a lot of people, especially those who planned to play on only 1 day.

Yes, the GP Jersey turn out was amazing, but overall they do not get a very large turnout to their non Grand Prix Legacy Open events. I am not a fan of the changes either, but I can see why they are trying this out. I just hope that as the events roll along next season and they get more player feedback that SCG may more evenly distribute the number of times Legacy and Modern get featured as the Open event for the weekend. At approximately 9 events per quarter the spread should be, at the very least 2 Legacy, 2 Modern and 5 Standard with everything just alternating weekends (knowing that Standard will always be favored).

The top reason why legacy cards are expensive is because of the demand people see in weekly broadcast tournaments. Now there will be less opportunities for serious legacy innovation.
so far the only thing diff i see is that sunday no longer got coverage.
The Open event for the weekend will now be played out over two days (9 rounds of swiss on Saturday and 6 more of the top 64 players on Sunday) must like a Grand Prix. The payout for the Open will also be higher and entry will be more expensive. Most of the Open events for the first half of next year are Standard by a great majority. Sundays will not have two different Premier events for whatever formats were not part of the larger open event. The complaint is that Standard gets even more spotlight when it was already the favored event of the weekend.
SCG is a busisnes, so they can do what they want (whether I like to or not). The Legacy meta is sure to evolve more slowly with fewer major events every year.
With SCG dropping coverage for Legacy, I really hope that another company like Channel Fireball is able to take over. Not just for the sake of having consistent Legacy coverage, but also so that SCG can see what a stupid decision this is. This is likely going to cause a backlash from the Legacy community, and I think that SCG just lost its "first mover" advantage in the "market." No company could compete in terms of an Open Series, but I think that now one could.

This would be fantastic and I don't see it as being out of the realm of possibility. Especially given that CFB may want to pick up on SCG, similarly to how they nabbed their team when SCG decided not to sponsor one any longer.

I am personally appalled by this. I don't play Legacy. However, I enjoy watching it. While Modern being added is great, I would have preferred it if some Standard events were removed and support for Legacy and Modern was kept high.
At this moment, I'm cancelling an order of cards from SCG, and looking at other vendors.
Same here. And I LOATHE to do it because I order almost all of my sealed product from SCG because of their Sunday Legacy coverage. But this announcement coming is such an insult to their customer base that I cannot support them until they realize their mistake in abandoning a significant portion of their fan and customer base. SCG and WOTC have been pushing Standard to the absolute extreme and if things keep going this way I'll likely stop playing Magic for good. Standard has been abysmal the last few years. I don't know if I could survive another year of Mono-Black Devotion versus Mono-Blue Devotion metagame where one or two decks just dominate the field.
Between the insane decision to force all Pro Tours to Standard (which was hated so much that Wizards backtracked and put one Modern Pro Tour) and having Standard sets rotate out more quickly. And now SCG emphasizing Standard far more than all other formats. It seems like WOTC is beginning the next stage of its transformation of MTG by focusing everything on Standard. Theros and Khans must have made more money for SCG than their singles market. How long until SCG or WOTC or both are only doing Standard and Limited tournaments? One or two years I'd say tops unless something dramatic happens (like abolishing the Reserved List or Wizards breaking off from Hasbro).
At this point does anyone have any confidence in Modern as a format at all? We just had the largest Legacy tournament of all time, and one of the largest MTG tournaments ever, and according to WOTC the single highest weekend turnout for MTG tournaments in the game's history. The response is to reduce Legacy coverage to next-to-nothing and push Standard by SCG. And this is right after WOTC announced that they'd be heavily pushing Standard even trying to permanently end Modern as a Pro Tour Format.
My guess is Hasbro has laid down the law. Standard is to be pushed and occasionally Limited. And SCG now knows if they want to try to become the official Grand Prix and Pro Tour coverage team that they better push Standard, Standard, and more Standard. We know that SCG wants to produce more Grand Prix and even Pro Tour coverage. And if Wizards (Hasbro) only cares about Standard then making only Standard Opens is likely the best way to get Wizard's attention.
Lastly I love the grief that people were giving SCG employees on social media. And then the SCG employees denying that this was a poor decision. Maybe they'll make a concession like Wizards did with their one Modern Pro Tour. But if SCG wants to cover Pro Tours and Grand Prix events for WOTC officially then I doubt that will ever care about Legacy or even Modern if WOTC fires GGsLive and give SCG a shot at folding their production outfit into WOTC.
Like I said in the comments of that article, I have virtually no reason to go to an Open ever again. I only really went to play Legacy in the first place, but I would usually go for both days and often play in the Standard Open or side events on Saturday. Now, even when Legacy is the main event, I don't want to have to sign up for 15+ rounds and an entire weekend just to enter.
Even when the events are in easy driving distance for me, I'm tempted to skip the whole thing now just out of spite.

I agree with this pretty strongly man. Id love to play Legacy since its probably one of the few formats that contains MTG's variance pretty well and it represents the most decks and strategies. I dont understand how Standard brings in so much money compared to Limited. Limited brings in the most money since thats how they sell packs. I dont get either how Standard really sells the game better than Legacy. With Legacy anyone could bring any deck to a MTG tournament and play. Even people who just play commander could show up to a Legacy tournament. The Reserved List is one big double edged sword. The Legacy cards are going to crash in value some day. Either from the death of legacy or the cards getting so expensive to where there will be more counterfeiting that will crash the prices. WoTC should take cards off the list and slowly reprint them since store owners will have to cut their loses at some point either way. I have a terrible feeling that what will happen is that WoTC will reprint the cards not on the reserve list that were important from Legacy for Modern like Force of Will and what not and let the format die, if we are lucky at that. Or maybe they will just feed Modern with the standard garbage, who knows.
And I really hate Modern. It might be better with standard but its not really that great since its just a format with a bunch of watered down legacy decks and none of the good Legacy cards that are super skill intensive and make the format really interesting. I dont like either how WoTC doesnt know how the format should be. They dont like combo since its not good for spectators and then allow a bunch of turn 4 combo kills, sometimes turns 2-3 with things like Gouyos Vengence and Jeskai Ascendency it makes no sense. To me Modern feels like where all the standard all-stars went to die. Plus the format suffers the drawbacks of having to keep continuously banning things. We are at the point to where in Legacy that outside of Treasure Cruise, that cards could keep coming off. With Modern, I can imagine them going as far to start banning things like Snapcaster or Lightning Bolt because they might make the format too stale since the format doesnt have any cards that really check and balance anything. Plus Modern is overpriced for an eternal format. Most decks are half the price of Legacy decks and sets like Modern Masters do jack **** for the format since the cards barely move in price and they only move for a short period of time. Tarmogoyf is still $200, MM did absolutely nothing to change that.
I dont understand the people who constantly want to defend WoTC/SCG either. Those people sound like they work for the damn company since they are like "oh but its better business for WoTc and SCG", yeah no **** man thats why they did it, but your not part of their company and that doesnt benefit you so why would you want that to happen? MTG is at its peak in popularity and I dont see the game dying or anything, but at the same time, nothing lasts forever. I really feel for you that these types of things are going to make the game take a nose dive at some point. Who knows when, but it feels like its coming at some point.
Here's my question. How does this affect Legacy at the local level? We have about 12 to 18 guys who get together every Saturday for a Legacy league. It's 10 weeks, top 8 at the end for the big prizes. This is recent, but we've been playing Legacy at this LGS now for a couple of years. I don't see this SCG change as having any effect on these guys getting together every week to play Legacy. I'm sure not going to stop playing.
So really, how big a deal is this really? I'm not seeing what the big commotion is unless you're somebody who looks forward to playing in these things. Then I can see you being extremely upset. And as much as I loved watching the coverage of NJGP, I'll survive not having these.
So make me understand how this change is going to kill Legacy for those of use who play regularly regardless.
Well, I see basically no support for west coast, besides the single one in ALL of CA and the two WA events, all Standard. Legacy coverage has now dissipated. Time to hang my decks up for good and move the duals I've been holding on to. There's no reason to play, no reason to watch. I enjoyed the Legacy coverage on Sunday because that was my relaxing time period. Now I have to go find a new hobby, or return to one of my old ones.
For the people wanting CFB to pick up the Legacy lost leg, how they feel about Modern is probably even stronger than how they feel about Legacy. Meaning to say, Modern has a higher chance of CFB picking up video feed coverage than Legacy does.

If you actually have a local Legacy scene, then it won't change a whole lot except that you will probably see new decks less often. I would wager that the majority of people don't have that many regular players to support a tournament every week. Between both of the local stores I play at, there are maybe a dozen regular Legacy players total. Each store has a Legacy night on the schedule, but it's always hit or miss whether eight people will show up to fire off the tournament or not. For people in my area, going to any Legacy Open in driving distance has been the only way to play against more than the same few decks all the time.
I wrote them a long e-mail basically saying I understand why they changed the structure but please consider streaming video coverage of the Legacy IQs instead of the standard opens. We all get to see more than enough standard coverage and it gets old fast.

Each store has a Legacy night on the schedule, but it's always hit or miss whether eight people will show up to fire off the tournament or not. For people in my area, going to any Legacy Open in driving distance has been the only way to play against more than the same few decks all the time.

Yeah, you don't understand Modern at all. You are just spouting stereotypes about the format.
