I like Dack. I hope I'm not the only one who wants to do terrible things with him and Notion Thief. Shame that the earliest they can reasonably drop together is turn 3, and even that doesn't really win you the game.
I tried Dack in a UGr Madness brew (kicked out Aquamoeba, had to play Birds of Paradise instead of Noble Hierarch, also got to play with Izzet Charm to screw Deathrite and still abuse Madness), and he was pretty good there. His dig rate is insane, and Madness protects him somewhat well. I still doubt he'll make Madness fully competitive again, but he is pretty fun there...
I also tested Selvala in Combo Elves as a 1-of (tried her in opening hand and buried in the deck against Jund, Shardless BUG, and RUG Tempo Thresh pre-board so far, booted a Fyndhorn Elves, went up to 4 Quirion Ranger), and she actually gets fairly insane within 1-3 turns if not dealt with. She combos with Wirewood Symbiote and Quirion Ranger for turbo card draw/mana/life (bouncing Quirion with Symbiote and Selvala out is tech), Symbiote can protect her while she's vulnerable (although Symbiote tends to die fast and first), and Heritage Druid can tap her for mana if truly desperate. Being horrid mid-Glimpse turn is a drawback, though.
Opponents drawing into removal for Selvala can be fairly bad, but she's been surprisingly good against opponents drawing counterspells. Threatening 2 NO/Hoofs in a single turn after she's done some work isn't uncommon, and I once had Thresh FoW 2 Glimpses (she flipped a FoW, so I knew I had to play around it), then Pierce-Pierce-Daze the first NO to make me waste mana, then Stifle the first Hoof, then I still slammed down another NO to win. Thresh also had 2 Delvers (1 flipped), a Goyf, and a Mongoose out at the time. (The life gain helped that game--I was close to dying to Delver swings + Bolt.)
Howling Mine/Temple Bell (+ mondo mana + life gain could be clutch) Elf is probably decent in Combo Elves, though, because Glimpse has to be countered, NO into Hoof must be countered if I have enough creatures out, (GSZ into) Hoof similarly lures counterspells, and Symbiote-Visionary steps in for Selvala-untap once I find it.
Unlike Glimpse and Symbiote-Visionary, Selvala doesn't give a hoot against opposing Spirit of the Labyrinth--in fact, she lets Combo Elves draw 2 cards to D&T's 1.
I don't know whether she'll bull her way into Combo Elves like Deathrite did--needing white mana sucks, although I've cast her off Deathrite + no Savannah fairly often, being 3 cmc also sucks, and being vulnerable to removal isn't so hot--but she's definitely a worthy removal lure, and at least she doesn't die to Bolt.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Tested against Sneak Show. Selvala wasn't so good against them, just as I expected. She tends to land too late, then swing inefficiently or feed everyone cards (and you don't feed combo cards, so I can't afford to let them untap with Selvala's spoils). However, I did manage to combo off through eating an Emrakul swing thanks to her:
Sneak Show taps out and busts Lotus Petal to cast Sneak Attack into Emrakul. I sac all 4 of my lands, Elvish Visionary, and Llanowar Elves, leaving only Selvala and Wirewood Symbiote.
At their EOT, I tap Selvala because I can (and one more card can't hurt).
On my turn, I pull this off:
Tap Selvala, add GG and draw
Cast Glimpse (not countered!)
Cast Nettle Sentinel, draw
Bounce Nettle with Symbiote, untap Selvala
Tap Selvala, add GG and draw
Cast Glimpse 2 (drawn this turn, also resolves)
Cast Nettle, draw 2
Play Gaea's Cradle (drawn this turn), tap for GGG
Cast Heritage, draw 2
Cast Nettle, draw 2
Chain Elves until I stick Hoof for lethal
I got lucky, but man, Selvala felt powerful in that sequence!
I believe it's been long enough, and there's a new legend on the block.
Grenzo, Dungeon Warden looks pretty powerful in Goblins, where he can cheat out guys fairly fast (average of 2 activations per creature) and he can dodge Punishing Groves (Warchief already lets him be a 2-mana 3/3). Can he fit into other decks, and can he possibly build decks around him?
(Selvala has continued to perform well in Combo Elves against grindy decks. She did get caught in one Terminus, but she let Elves NO for Hoof while Nic Shift was Burning Wishing for a red board wipe (it had no black mana at the time). She generally gets out of control within 1-3 turns--cards and mana in the same turn from the same card is still unfair, even when opponents also draw, and especially when Combo Elves plays 13 "I win" cards (4 Glimpse, 4 GSZ for Hoof, 3 NO, 2 Hoof). And yes, I've tapped her to Heritage Druid.)
If Brago, King Eternal were somehow 3 mana instead of 4, he would work well in a UWx stoneforge/snapcaster shell. Selvala, Explorer Returned has potential for combo elves as Lectrys says above.
I mean, hell, we're all on a forum for something that most people would describe as a "children's card game"...do what makes you happy. You are never too old to enjoy yourself.
hm does a 1U redirect have any potential? Split Decision. I assume misdirection is better 90% of the time.
Tyrant's Choice seems amazing in a black burn shell. Its very rare to have 2 mana for 4 damage cards. Magister of Worth is a reanimatable wrath of god. I'm not sure that a 4/4 flyer is big enough though. Muzzio, Visionary Architect is probably more modern playable than legacy, but I guess a tezzeret build might be able to play it.
Council's Judgment is pretty powerful. For a sorcery that costs only 1WW, you get to exile their best nonland permanent, no targeting strings attached! Finally, True-Name Nemesis and Emrakul get the boot! ...And they can't vote for anything you control, so they'll probably vote for whatever you voted for!
Yeah, Council's Judgement is the truth. Farewell O-ring, you have served my sideboard well for many years, but I think you're strictly Modern material now.
All of these "Let's eliminate bad cards" crusades are simply ignorant. And when they start to devolve into "WotC is conspiring to give us crappy cards," they just become embarrassing. MATH is conspiring to give you crappy cards.
O. Ring still screws with Show and Tell better than Council's Judgment does (SnT can win the turn it cheats in Omniscience). Enchantress and maybe 4-colored decks (such as Esper Deathblade) and Death and Taxes (8 colourless-making lands, Flickerwisp) also appreciate O. Ring more. Otherwise, Council's Judgment curbstomps it. (Tiago can flash it back.)
Just a small note, not detracting from your other points: Banishing Light should replace Oblivion Ring in Enchantress, because it can be cast for a draw and get on the battlefield for various effects that count the number of enchantments, even if the opponent has no nonland permanents on the battlefield, and without having to target something of your own.
Council's judgment is my vote for favorite card from the set... I feel like it will give maverick a boost (especially straight GW maverick). It's slow, but it literally hits ANYTHING. I feel like its an auto-include (2x anyway) for any fair deck that can reasonably expect to cast WW1 on turn 3.
Dack will lead to some hilarious plays by stealing swords, jittes, and batterskulls. That said, it's hard to say if he's good enough to make the cut in UR decks... 3 mana is a LOT for UR, RUG, and WUR delver. Maybe in the board vs. other equipment-based decks?
The thing about Council's Judgment is not that you should expect to pay WW1 for it but with Thalia in play it will cost WW2 which is a significant cost for any removal spell, even one as unique as this one. That is, I assume decks that want this will play Thalia as well.
I suspect the WW will keep Burning Wish Aggro Loam from picking it up, but man, would they appreciate the ability to kick out everything their spot removal can't eliminate.
Maybe Miracles but Blade decks already had access to Vindicate which sees play as a 1-of at best. I see Judgment as being similar enough to Vindicate that decks that have access to Vindicate but seldom use it probably won't gravitate to Judgment either.
The only time it's going to hit multiple permanents is when it's beneficial for your opponent to exile a second one of their permanents. It's a very strong card, but don't play it expecting to ever get a 2-1 with it.
The problem is vindicate can't hit nimble mongoose nor can it hit true name nor can it hit emrakul, this can; it can also hit multiple permanents garnering 2 for 1's at times.
Yeah... vindicate is nice, and sometimes it's great to hit a land, but this card is able to hit a much larger number of problem permanents. Plus, it doesn't require black. I don't see it being everywhere or even a 4-of anywhere, but I can definitely see 1-2 maindeck and maybe another in the board in a lot of white decks. It's partly going to be a meta call, too.
I think the fact that it costs two white is going to matter more than the one black.
The problem with this card is the same problem that cards like Maelstrom Pulse and Vindicate suffer: it costs three mana to kill one thing. That is hardly efficient and hence something you cannot dedicate too much slots to. If these untargetable permanents are the problem, Liliana will regularly be the better card because it does more than just kill a guy.
It's a powerful card and it will see play. But it's more in the category of Toxic Deluge or Maelstrom Pulse than in the category of Abrupt Decay, the latter actually being a format-warping card. Deluge and Pulse are simply nice tools to have access to that won't noticably impact the results of existing decks or boost new ones. Mostly in sideboards and as one-ofs in some mainboards.
I agree that Council's Judgment will eventually look only as good as Maelstrom Pulse and Vindicate--the 3 cmc is a pretty good trend--but I disagree that Liliana is usually the better card against the untargetable in BWx decks. Liliana screws over combo and hard control very hard compared to Council's Judgment, but Council's Judgment hits what you want through any number of Mother of Runes, Sylvan Safekeepers, Sterling Groves, Pithing Needles on walkers, and Phyrexian Revokers on walkers, and it still hits something pretty good if they bounce Batterskull or save Elves with Wirewood Symbiote in response (instead of Liliana always hitting their worst creature). ...On the other hand, Liliana can hit two things and ult pretty hard, which is clutch.
Tyrant's Choice is very good. Black is a reasonable combo-hating splash for burn and offers the deck now two good extra burn spells, plus Dark Confidant from the side after you ran a creatureless list game 1. The downside is that you become forced to up the land count of the deck for this and increase its vulnerability to mana denial strategies. Is this worth it, compared to stay mono red and take a stronger sligh approach with the new Eidolon to simultaneously boost your combo match-up?
With Lightning Helix to screw with ANT's head and Boros Charm as the other good extra burn spell (and neat sideboard stuff like Rest in Peace and Wear // Tear), white looks like another somewhat viable Burn splash. ...That didn't get off the ground.
Selvala might work in elves, but she looks too white and too expensive to reliably be productive. A three mana creature that needs to survive for a turn to do work? Why not just Priest of Titania or Elvish Archdruid at that point?
Selvala is very white (and that's one of the most distressing parts about her in testing), but she survives Bolt(/Punishing Fire), and she's an OK topdeck post-board wipe because she can tap for 2 mana on her own (she taps for that more often than she taps for 0 mana) and draw into threats faster (they draw into answers faster, too, but they likely only play 6 unconditional counterspells and 5 board wipes max, and that's how I keep winning with early, stuck Selvala). She also seals your chances of Turn 4 combos if you don't start off with a "I win" card in hand. ...And potentially taunting ANT with the life gain is nice. On the other hand, she doesn't pump fellow Elves out of Engineered Plague range or nearly cast Hoof.
Grenzo is worse than Krenko in goblins. Goblins has all it needs in terms of board recovery and finishers. It's just combo that keeps it from dominating.
The black splash is ugly, but Grenzo is a 2-drop off Vial (so he's not as slow as Krenko), can do something the turn he ETB without Haste (better than Krenko there), and he can potentially cheat out sideboard hate bears like Thalia (Venser should be nice anti-Show and Tell tech). On the other hand, if he's Vialed in, he's not immune to one Punishing Fire.
Dack Fayden seems like maybe the best card in this set for legacy. A planeswalker who is actually playable in RUG delver. What it does to SFM goodness is comparable to what Notion Thief means for Brainstorm. Party trick is to steal a vial to rejuvenate your counters or actually steal someone's top when combining him with stifle. Also, it rushes into threshold and boosts goyfs while going up. Filter away leftover lands even more efficiently. And hopefully he can get a cool RUG(x) loam deck to work.
Dack stealing Batterskull (equipped to Germ) and equipped Jitte is rather slow from my testing. Notion Thief blows out Brainstorm harder. He does rip into business pretty fast from my testing, but being unable to protect himself leaves me rather insecure (I'm more secure with Liliana in Team America because she can protect himself).
Grenzo's Rebuttal is probably too expensive at 4RR, but it does let red take out the untargetable...and take out any creature, land, and artifact it wants! Too bad it loses a land and an artifact, too, and either loses the 4/4 Ogre token it just got or a more important creature.
Flamewright poops out 1/1 artifact creatures with Defender for 1, t, then can tap and sac a creature with Defender to ping for 1. For a 1/1 that costs RW, is that worth it? ...Probably not...
Judge Foil Stifle Art and new border Deed are nice.
As for new cards Council's Judgment is the only one that seems to stand out. A few others, like Dack, might find a place; I guess we will have to wait and see...[/color]
Modern card face...ugh. But I'm a purist.
Not seeing much that screams Legacy to me in the new set. The reprints are nice (don't forget Exploration as well), but Will of the Council is the only card that really stands out, and even then I'm not sure how much that will be played over something like O-ring, which has the benefit (and primary application) of being dropped in off an opposing Show and Tell. It will most likely be a meta call, but the ability to remove TNN for 3 mana is quite enticing for D&T.
On the other hand, if he's Vialed in, he's not immune to one Punishing Fire.
Dack stealing Batterskull (equipped to Germ) and equipped Jitte is rather slow from my testing. Notion Thief blows out Brainstorm harder. He does rip into business pretty fast from my testing, but being unable to protect himself leaves me rather insecure (I'm more secure with Liliana in Team America because she can protect himself).
Flamewright poops out 1/1 artifact creatures with Defender for 1, t, then can tap and sac a creature with Defender to ping for 1. For a 1/1 that costs RW, is that worth it? ...Probably not...
Modern card face...ugh. But I'm a purist.
Not seeing much that screams Legacy to me in the new set. The reprints are nice (don't forget Exploration as well), but Will of the Council is the only card that really stands out, and even then I'm not sure how much that will be played over something like O-ring, which has the benefit (and primary application) of being dropped in off an opposing Show and Tell. It will most likely be a meta call, but the ability to remove TNN for 3 mana is quite enticing for D&T.
Standard: I, for one, welcome our new rhinoceros overlords
Modern: Pod's dead, Bob's back.
Legacy: Lands, Deathblade, Death and Taxes, Elves, MUD
Retired Legacy: Merfolk, Goblins, Jund, Delver, Reanimator
A lot more than just those, too. This set is fantastic for people looking to pick up some staples and fringe stuff for decks while still rocking a new way to play. I love it.
