I've been playing modern for some time and now want to get into legacy. I've played with some friends decks before and am familiar with some of the most prominent decks in the format, but need help deciding on a solid deck that I can rely on being strong for a long time to come.
Currently I play Merfolk in modern, and my first thought is to simply get the cards necessary and convert that deck to Legacy Merfolk. But as someone who is unfamiliar with the format, is Merfolk competitive? Judging by consistency and long-term viability, is it worth it to build legacy merfolk or would I be better off in the long run building a more solid deck even if it means acquiring more cards that I don't have?
I know picking a deck is a personal decision that depends largely on the player, I get that, but since legacy is such an investment, I'd just like to know which decks are likely to stick around and stay competitive, and particularly whether Merfolk is worth building
Fish is a decent deck in legacy, doesn't usually take a super high spot on the winnings, but it does decent. Main things for conversion is true name nemesis, wastelands, and force of wills.

Except that nobody runs wasteland in fish anymore because it bones the manabase and there are better tempo decks out there so you don't want to try to out-tempo them.

Here are the little self-imposed guidelines I'm working with for the multiplayer decks I've been building:
• Must be cheap. Total price tag < $100, preferably < $50. Ideally ~$30. No one card greater than about ~$6
• Format: Modern (makes getting the cards somewhat easier for the play group, and almost all my cards are Modern-legal)
• Must be relatively interesting in 1:1 games. I don't need to win against Splinter Twin, but I should be able to play duels now and then
• Avoid instant-win combos; they only serve to make me target #1, and then the deck is worse than useless because I get killed first, every time
• Must have a funny name!

Converting merfolk from modern to legacy is an excellent choice for two reasons:
First, some will probably disagree, but in my opinion, Merfolk will likely always be a solid deck in legacy. Maybe not "tier 1" or the "deck of the week," but always solid. This is especially true with an experienced pilot. If you enjoy merfolk in modern, there is no reason to believe you won't enjoy it in legacy, and if you enjoy it you'll play more and get good with it. Playing a deck that is similar in many ways in both formats will have the added benefit of allowing you to learn the deck (in both variations) inside and out in a wider variety of matchups and allow you to make better decisions when it comes to tweaking for personal playstyle and the meta.
Second, from a financial standpoint the investment is minimal (for legacy, anyway), the expensive staples are utilized in many other decks, and as a last resort you can always sell/trade them for something else. In terms of expensive stuff, you'd be looking at some combination of force of will, wasteland, cavern of souls, true-name nemesis, and umezawa's jitte. The only one here that isn't everywhere in legacy is cavern of souls, and it's the cheapest of the bunch. Everything else you'd want for legacy is a few bucks. Having to buy zero fetches or ABU duals is a plus.

I've not seen a fish deck that didnt run 4. And with all the basics they run, how does that "bone" the manabase? The nonbasics fish run are wasteland and cavern, thats it, and fish is still considered a tempo deck.
