This is exactly the kind of bull**** I'm talking about. Stop it with the disingenuous lie-mongering. A deck that just "does well" is not going to get banned. Jund was putting stupid numbers into big Modern events. Ask anyone from our forum. We were all there for the endless - and I mean ****ing endless - Jund mirror matches in Chicago, Toronto, and so on.
Stop lying about our format because you don't like it.
Umm aren't you confirming his point? People just flocked to the best deck. I enjoyed modern, until June was the only deck I would see. Then eggs had a surge because someone did well with it.
708 people showed up for the BoM7 Legacy Main Event. I guess it's technically down from last year's record 722, but for some reason, I'm not worried.
Plus they're holding a second BoM this year for the first time, in November.

Honestly I really dislike modern now. It has gotten really old having to constantly adjust because Wizards keeps banning cards. Modern is a horribly volitile format because of it. Atleast in legacy, things are a little more stable.

It's coming right after a massive Legacy GP. I imagine some people are burned out. I'm definitely jealous of the eternal format tournaments Europe gets.
Last night, Maplewood Hobby in NJ had its first sanctioned Legacy event, something nobody thought possible. We only had 8 but still, given the area, nobody expected this. And no proxies either.
And diverse?
These were the 8 decks played and the final standings.
1- Team America
2- ANT
3- Burn
4- Look Ma No Lands
5- Punishing Jund
6- Esper Stone Blade
7- Pox
8- Miracles
I played Pox. Had No Lands not top decked a Chrome Mox against me at 2 life and a turn away from lethal from my Mishra's, I would have finished 4th. That's a tough matchup for Pox but I took him to a 3rd game.
Albeit slowly, Legacy is growing in my area. A year ago, I would have had no hope for this.

The meta where I play is pretty healthy is well. Every thursday there's about 10 people playing legacy (a few of em vintage) at my LGS, and usually the monthly tournaments get about 35-ish players. The meta is fairly diverse as wel, BUG being the most played, but also lots of combo, creature decks and various brews.
Last tournament had
1 esper stoneblade
1 Goblins
1 Sneak and show
1 Merfolk
1 ANT
1 Maverick
1 G/B rock
no idea what the last guy played. think it was a BUG list

I always try to keep a simpler deck together (Goblins, Burn, Affinity) in case new players want to try out the format. Hell, we got one guy in by handing him Sneak Attack (pre-Griselbrand). He's one of the strongest competitors in the area now.
Seriously, if you have the cards, have a second deck together, just to try to lure more sucke- I mean, players in. Usually, once they've had a taste (and don't get curb-stomped by combo for 3 rounds), they'll be coming back.

This is what me and a bunch of other players in my area do.
It's easy to get into Legacy when you hand someone Affinity or Goblins or Burn or Merfolk.
And these are relatively cheap decks to build as well.
I just had to report this. This past Saturday, we had Standard Constructed game day for Dragon's Maze running simultaneously with a Legacy event. You would think that Standard players would outnumber us by a wide margin since Legacy is dying.
We had more Legacy players than Standard players by 2 to 1.

Huh. I didn't realize this was in Seattle. My parents live near there and I visit occasionally. Sounds like I should stop by this store on a Monday if I am ever around.

It's great. Usually around 20-30 people most weeks.

That type of turnout is not typical, since many people are working on most Mondays. You can usually expect about 24-30 people on Mondays and about 32-40 on the weekend events which are held every month or two.
Exception are side events held by Card Kingdom at GPs and PTQs, which will get 50-70. It sounds like they're also going to make monthly events similar to the Memorial Day Event, so I'm guessing we'll start seeing at least 40-50 at those.

Well whenever I visit, I'm usually on vacation so no worries. 20 - 30 is about what I'm used to here in Madison at our Thursday and Saturday Legacy events. Surprisingly the Thursday event usually has more attendance.
Not looking forward to finding new Legacy events when I move to Indiana later this year. Perhaps it will be one of those "if you build it they will come" things Tormod always talks about.

I would add one factor, however, that you have missed in cards being destroyed. Higher card value means more international (or long distance intranational) trades. More international trades means more cards being lost/destroyed in the mail.
Given insurance costs around 2% of the price of an item being posted plus a flat fee, I'd assume half of that 2% represents markup and half represents the chance of loss. If that's accurate, and we assume each dual land is on average traded long distance once per year, that's a small but significant amount of loss - 1% of all duals in print destroyed each year.
What surprises me most is the lack of interest in Legacy on MTGO. The format is the same (save a couple of little-played sideboard cards like Virtue's Ruin), the cards are much cheaper overall and yet there's not been any real takeup.
Yeah, the old school gamers prefer to play games on tables rather than on screens. Also, does MTGO have Rishadan Port? I remember hearing that it doesn't. I wonder what other staples are missing?
As for dual lands lost in the mail, that's just silly. Trades of that caliber are usually sent by registered mail (I'd assume).

Port is online (as of quite recently) but very rare. It's available if you are willing to pay, the first bot I checked has 4 in stock at USD66 each. (The same dealer is BUYING foil ones for USD274). That's 15% more than in paper. The most notable missing card I can think of is Virtue's Ruin.
Registered mail goes missing. Hence the comment re insurance, something I know about from having done international card sales before. The difference with registered and insured mail is that you are not out of pocket when it happens, but a card is still out of circulation.
Example: If I sell a Tropical Island playset for AUD400 and insure it, then mail it somewhere and it's lost in transit, I get AUD400 in compensation from the insurance which I'd then return to the buyer (so noone is out of pocket). But 4 dual lands are out of circulation.
That happens more than you might think. I think the 1% estimate is reasonably close (maybe it's half that but it still adds up)

That's an interesting point, but I think you have significantly overestimated the attrition rate.
First of all, I think domestic mail tends to be much more safe, so let's focus on international trades for now.
If we accept that insurance is about 2%, I'd still imagine that the markup makes up far more than half of the cost. But that's not even my main concern with your argument, so let's use that 1% figure you threw out there.
You are estimating that 1% of all duals in print are destroyed each year based on what you have said, but in fact, it's 1% of all dual lands shipped internationally in a year, which is a much smaller number. There's going to also be some "destruction" from dual lands shipped domestically, as well as those that are not shipped at all, but I think we can all agree that these rates are going to be lower.
