what happens if you use a split or fuse card like Invert // Invent or Turn // Burn as signature spells?
what happens with a card like Summoning Trap that says "you may pay 0 rather than pay the cost" do you still pay the tax?
i think this might be the same as the previous question but if a card has an alternative cost like Earthen Arms awaken cost do you pay tax on that?
both halves would have to be legal and you will pay a tax regardless of which one you cast.
In a zombie deck that runs rooftop storm, you still have to pay the tax, so yes you will pay tax (It is an additional cost)
Yes you pay tax on alternate costs too. (Like Mizzix of the Izmagus and Cyclonic rift. with enough experience counters, you can overload a C.rift for just U) An alternate cost is still a cost, it can be taxed.
I'm really hoping my local EDH group opens up to this, as I've already drafted a sweet Hautli, the Sun's Heart + Tower Defense list. Something about punching people for nine with camels and such appeals to me greatly.
I would love to be able to play this format, but I just found out about it a few days ago, and won't be going back to my LGS for a few more days. Not really sure if they play there at all, but I'm definitely making some deck plans. I'm in the camp of "build to have fun" vs. "build to combo out as soon as possible and not let anyone else do anything". That being said, I'm still trying to win so am not going to build something that will never work. Here's a few of my ideas:
I'm also working on Daretti, Ingenious Iconoclast, Kiora, Behemoth Beckoner, and more. But just as a side note, remember that mana cost taxes can still be reduced. From the example above, with Mizzix and Cy Rift, if the Rift is your Signature Spell and you've cast it three times, but (somehow) have Mizzix out with 12 experience counters... Overloaded it still only costs U.

They love and hate to see me walk through the door. I'm the man with the box, one to carry all his Standard cards with him. I've got the commons and uncommons they need. But I've also got my decks. If I walk into FNM, I came to play. And they never know what I'm gonna pull out of my hat next. I may lose more than I win, but it just might be THIS deck that has all the answers that they don't have answers for. They fear the unknown. They fear me. And they never see me coming!
Someone was talking to me last night about this and I just keep imagining all these annoying control decks. If I were to get in on this I would probably build Tibalt, Rakish Instigator with Lightning Bolt as my spell. I would maybe also consider Koth of the Hammer as another option for the commander but I think Tibalt maybe.
If everyone is playing durdle walkers then burn their faces off.

I have officially moved to MTGNexus. I just wanted to let people know as my response time to salvation decks being bumped is very hit or miss.

Signature spells have a commander tax, too, which means Bolt is probably terrible as a signature spell. Would you really be willing to pay 4R for a simple Bolt effect?
Urza, Academy Headmaster should be legal. The banned list included all silver-bordered cards but it's literally the only silver-bordered planeswalker (and only 5C one, too).

I would probably only try to cast it the first two times then just use other burn spells unless I don't have other things to do. Getting a few extra bolts to hand as your signature seems strong in 20 life setups.

Maybe, I am still not sure if its something I want to do. I am always leery of new upstart formats because it seems so rarely that anyone plays them after 6 months.

If you're not sure, then build a deck in an archetype you've always wanted to play in Commander, but haven't. If Oathbreaker flops, just add another 40 cards and you have a Commander deck! (That's my plan with my Ashiok deck, anyway.)
What do you think would make a good signature spell for Nicol Bolas, Dragon-God? I'm going for a discard strategy similar to the Davriel-Torment of Hailfire deck I posted. Preferably no Tutors, that's boring.

Deliver Unto Evil, hands down. Why just one tutor when you can grab some removal and a counter to go with it?

The Elderspell seems like the obvious choice on multiple levels to me.

I spent $0 on this deck. Perks of sticking to one wedge you own everything for, I guess. Maybe you try a similar thing for your deck? As someone that bought into Brawl, I totes feel you on skepticism.
Does anyone think this format will become mainstream enough for Wizards of the Coast / Hasbro to release supplemental / specialty products similar to what they've done with Commander Precons as a way to add more reprint equity into the game without having to rely on Masters sets? A lot of cards are already spiking due to Modern Horizons with no sign of them dropping in value anytime soon as Modern is driving away players into EDH / Commander and Oathbreaker as much as Standard is due to it's monthly rotation cycle. We've already learned from the past few years that too much reprint equity has the potential to put Local Game Stores (LGS) out of business simply because they didn't have the capital to order in as many boxes with the product being too expensive.
The problem is that a lot of people automatically assume that a certain set or expansion isn't going to be successful and when it does turn out to be successful based on spoilers everyone's seen online, they regret not placing their pre-orders especially in a situation where an LGS didn't order as much of a new product thinking that the set wasn't going to sell. So they're basically stuck not making as much of a profit on the set as much as other competing LGS's because they weren't patient enough to allow the Secondary Market to absorb what's already been spoiled by setting themselves up for failure. Normally they're usually able to bounce back from this but when a product's EV is WAY too expensive there's nothing they can really do to help lower the cost unless they take a major hit without breaking even.

Just curious, since there are no 'rules-threads' for oathbreaker, i'd ask 'em here.
If say i have narset, parter of veils as my general, and cast transmute artifact, my signature spell, can my opponent 'counter' it (fizzle it, whatever you wanna call it) by hero's downfalling narset?
i.e. the rules say that i can't cast my signature spell without having the general in play. But if it was in play as it was cast, but then removed before it resolves, does it fizzle?

One of the issues with Oathbreaker is that the rules are not completely fleshed out as they don't exist in the CR. That being said, the rules page does say this:
but your Oathbreaker must also be on the battlefield under your control as you cast it.
Legendary Sorceries are very similar that we can probably use that as a precedent. So, using these two pieces of information, the restriction of when you can cast your Signature Spell only requires your Oathbreaker to be on the field at the moment you announce the spell. Removing your Oathbreaker after the spell has become cast is too late to affect it.

yea, i mean that makes sense, thanks.
I'm liking this format, though it seems to reeeaaaallly skew hard towards combo. I mean, you're starting with 1 or even 2 pieces of the combo and/or tutor in hand at the start of the game. At times, especially the 2 decks i actually put some (not too much, mind you) time into, it feels like i'm playing 'slow' vintage (as in turn 1-2 lock piece, turns 2-3 drop combo piece, turn 3-4 win).
Has anyone else also found this to be the case? I'm considering putting some really harsh restrictions to my deck construction 'cuz i probably won't be able to stop myself.
I got to play some of this and didn't find that the case. I also didn't directly come into it looking to build combo because walking in with that feels like a recipe for death depending on what others are playing so I just went with Saheeli, Sublime Artificer, Finale of Promise token swarm jamboree.
The 20 life is a refreshing change of pace.
Like people had efficient plays more often than just going straight for the combo.
This really makes me wish the other 3 color slots would get PWs now.
It's been pretty fun though actually. It's pretty nutty, and compresses EDH into a similar experience but in a much shorter play time (which i like), and without having games lead to feeling like it's broken (it feels awkward when the game feels like it just broke, but the player who broke the game can't win the game yet).

Synergy is key in this format, and a tutor or combo piece in the command zone generally gets you archenemy'd out.
