I was thinking about it as a possible commander variant and it sounds like alot of fun.
Its pretty much what it sounds like. Your commander determines your tribe type. And you can only include creatures of that type.
....I might add a rule that says you have to have at least 20+ creatures in the deck or something. But maybe not.
Why play this variant?
Ever notice how some colors for commander always have the exact same card because its the only card in that color in the magic universe that does 3 to 5 effects all for the price of one card?
If you have green then your deck auto includes Acidic Slime.
Great card, lots of value. Now you can't use it unless you have a legendary ooze commander. But that is the point of playing variants. It changes things up.
Any suggestions on this type of Variant? Am I on the ball for making this up? is it already being played?
After some discussion should I write up a nice rules thread and get it stickied? maybe send it in to Wizzards to make it official?
We held a Tribal Duel Commander event last Sunday and I can say it was a success despite the low turnout (the event date coincided with WMCQ). We had a total of 15 players and here's what I roughly remember seeing:
Top 4 was Kaalia, Anafenza, Ezuri and Animar. In the end, Kaalia won. I will try to upload the decklists within the week if anyone's interested.

We had to come up with special rules for the event:
1. At least 24 creatures in your deck should reflect a common creature type, which in turn is derived from one of the creature types of your general.
(To explain, let's say I chose Ezuri, Renegade Leader as my general. I need to fulfill the requirements first: Since Elf and Warrior are Ezuri's creature types, I need to choose between the two. In this case I'll choose Elf. Second requirement states I need to have at least 24 creatures of the same type I chose - so that means I have to put 24 Elf creatures, regardless of the secondary creature type. That means I can have an Elf Warrior, Elf Rogue, Elf Demon or even an Elf Ninja so long as they all have the creature type Elf and it follows the basic deckbuilding rule that they have the same color identity/ies as my general. From this point on, I can put as many creatures or variety of spells in my deck as I desire. If I wanted to build a deck that only consists of creatures and lands, that's fine. I can choose to put more Elf creatures, or add another creature type. I can now add changelings to add more "unofficial" Elf creatures on my list. I can even put in Emrakul if I wanted to. The only limitation would be the color identity/ies and the banlist.)
2. Duel Commander rules and banlist will be observed, with these additions:
Commander tribal was always fun to play in my local EDH league, but I'd suggest you try to limit the amount of people to run a certain tribe. We had too many people go elves and it turned rather silly when 4 elves players sat down, all playing with Ezuri, Renegade Leader...

We're also interested to check out other takes on this variant.
