Personally, I greatly prefer the original card frame to either of the new ones so when it comes to pimping out decks I tend to go for older versions of cards even if they're available as a foil reprint. Pauper decks add a new layer of complexity, at least for me. Several old-face cards are available as promo-foils, but not as pack-foils, with the old card face. For example, Counterspell, Impulse, and Capsize. The promo versions of these cards are very pretty, but they have gold expansion symbols. What do you guys think of playing these cards in PDH, aesthetically? This is not a question about the legality of these cards.

You would never guess, at the terrifying sight of the man, that Hunding was as charming a companion as one could wish for.
You can get counterspell pack foil from mercadian masques... for $40 or so...
I wouldn't have a problem with gold expansion symbols personally (this coming from someone who saves $ in their edh cube with world championship cards). A fully foiled edh deck, even a pauper one, is so damn pretty that I don't think 1-3 gold expansion symbols out of 100 cards is going to be something folk'll be paying attention to.
i personally despise foils, but do have an 80% foil pdh deck (missing some islands and 6 spells that do not come foiled). during the pimp-process, i gave special attention to each card and chose the foil version i enjoyed the most. it is probably the most expensive pile of commons you can hold in your hands.

When pimping out, I pick promo foil over anything else, then old border foil, new border foil, and if all else fails I go with original printing and alter the art to something DBZ or Pokemon related.
Pack foil is usually my #1 choice, unless the card is from one of those notoriously bendy (old rav) or unreadable-dark sets (lor-shad, some TSP). I'll take a promo foil if one is around, but for a long time the promos seemed to have been where the reject arts went to ~ compare restoration angel, silverblade paladin, wild nacatl, and (retch) hero of bladehold.
EDIT: I guess after DKA the crappy promo arts phenomenon became less of an issue, but still...

"Personally I love high-riak, low-reqars gambles. Life's best with a decent amount of riak. And f*** reqars."
Same here. I am missing a handful of foils in Yavimaya Elder (running altered art instead), Merchant Scroll ($$), and Strip Mine (the mythic expansion symbol bothers me). Plus, there are the small handful of cards that are not yet available in foil (Remote Isle, Slippery Karst, Red Elemental Blast, and Rolling Thunder).
