Yes, you're right, it's a replacement effect to the nexus going to graveyard.
That's what happens when you talk about cards from memory rather than reading them first lol!
Your list looks good and yes, I agree, lion's eye diamond won't work as effectively with Emrakul as with Kozilek because you can't replace the cards immediately afterwards.
tower of fortunes and endbringer are good additions.
I used to run endbringer but had to cut him because turn after turn it would just stay in my hand as I was playing better options. Everything I drew seemed to be a better option.
treasure map could work as a nice little mana sink for you.
Scries, pumps out weenie lotus petal's which you can then use to draw cards later
Ok, I bring out Sculpting Teel for Vedalken Orrery. I also like Treasure Map and I want it to substitute some high cost card because my decklist's average mana cost is getting quite high (a bit less than 4). Maybe putting out The Immortal Sun? Any other hypotheses?
By the way i haven't tried the deck yet and in fact I don't own most of the cards, I'm looking for an ok list to buy and start from there.
the Immortal sun could be a could one to remove but it's a nice draw card that reduces the cost of your commander and allows you to chain together casting rocks to ramp yourself faster.
The downside is it stops karn and ugin.
I recommend testing the deck. It's the easiest way to find what cards work, even if you just print them out and play them on paper to test.
I often flip over a basic land and sharpie the card on the back until I know the card works. Make life cheaper!
If this thread isn't dead, I'd like to add that I've been playing a non-combo Kozilek EDH for years now and I like it quite a bit more than any combo variant, no dead draws like Staff of Domination in my list. I'm sure nowadays it might be just fine with Paradox Engine but I find it weird the lists in here lack Oracle's Vault if they're running that card, its good enough to go in the deck on its own and its synergy with the Engine is absurd.
I tested Oracle's Vault for about 6 months when Amonkhet was released but I found it to be a bit of a dead card.
It’s good in the right situation and yes, combos well with paradox engine but I found it to be much less useful than Staff of Domination.
At the point in the game where I have the mana spare to actually utilise Oracle’s Vault, worst case scenario I can only get one activation out of it.
Staff of Domination can keep going and going up to whatever my maximum mana output is.
It combos far better with Paradox Engine because if Oracle’s Vault hits a land the combo stops.
If Staff hits a land you can keep on going provided you have the mana to keep paying into it (which with Paradox Engine you pretty much always do).
If you’ve hit infinite mana but are waiting for that last piece to finish off the game, Oracle's Vault isn’t a card you want to draw. Staff is.
I suppose if you’re playing non combo then you see the cards differently. Staff is far less use if you don’t have infinite mana whereas the Vualt can grab you a card per turn cheaply.
I have given it some serious time testing but it was always one of those cards that sat in my hand being put further and further back as there was always something better to play. Any card that happens to always gets cut for something else.
Hello hello, cool that there is a Kozi thread that is somewhat active.
I just looked at LED and wondered if its ability is a tap ability since i had a Inspiring Statuary in play, and it isn't a tap ability. Its just a sacrifice. Don't know why i haven't thought about it before. The times i've played it, its always untapped.
I sitll play the new Kozilek, but i can post the list here if you want to. Otherwise im thinking of having a Butcher sideboard to swap out the Distortion pieces.
Feel free! We colourless players need to stick together and something that's good for me is usually good for you.
I just started a thread to keep the list updated since the OP for the primer hasn't updated in about two years. Helps new Kozi players get started if the deck is up to date. Plus, anyone looking to remove the combo can do so easily. It's not so easy to put the combos into a non combo if you don't know the deck too well.
inspiring statuary can work with any artifact. You can tap a sol ring to it if you want to (however dumb that would be). LED works great as it can generate 4 mana total or just 1 when you need it until you need to sac it in for the 3.
Thabks for reading the thread! Gonna keep it up to date with every release. Being colourless we don't get given many toys so our threads go quiet quite often!
I'll second this. I'm a canon enthusiast for MTG and I think the Eldrazi's purpose could be as Plane recyclers, putting mana back into the Multi-Verse for the generation of new Planes.
If you read Tazri's weird Kozilek induced brain future in The Blight We Were Born For it says:
For the first ten thousand years after Kozilek's disappearance, Tazri had used her new powers to attempt the reconstruction. But Kozilek was a poor creator, nothing like his eldest sibling, and Tazri's gifts were a pale, stunted imitation of her master's.
Then you've got the last of the eldritch moon story, got Jace's mind meld with Emrakul:
She paused her writing, considering the scroll. "This is all wrong. I am incomplete, unfulfilled, inchoate. There should be blossoms, not barren resentment. The soil was not receptive. It is not my time. Not yet." The way she said, yet, sent a shiver through Jace's neck.
Then there's something in one of them that I couldn't find that says the two that procede emrakul destroy life, then unmake the plane's demise. Emrakul then sews new life into the soil.
They're saviours of the plane... Not the unhabitents lol
"We colourless players need to stick together and something that's good for me is usually good for you."
Of course! Yes, i will tinker a bit with a post.

Oh, i know it does, i just hadn't looked properly at LED for a looong while. I thought it was a tap and sacc but its just sacc so yeah, 4 mana!

Sadly i had to sold my Mana Crypt, but im thinking about getting a foil Kyren Toy. I had it as a proxy once and removed it since i only wanted to play with cards i have. And its great that it still taps for 1 mana without counters.
What do you think about Foundry Inspector?
Im was thinking about adding a Spatial Contortion, then i saw the Transmogrifying Wandand tought: How could i miss that? Seems awesome as removal. I'd rather let them have a 2/4 token than a Azami in play.
Btw, Karn, Silver Golemhas been pretty darn sweet, i missed the old guy. He unequips pesty artifacts, kills artifactlands and Mana Crypts and he can add SO MUCH POWER to the board if he resolves.
Since im a colourless player in all formats, i have a bunch of cards i have access to, like Ward of Bones and other staxpieces. I'll write up better a list when i can or something. (((SOME OF THEM ARE WRITTEN AS MAYBECARDS IN TAPPEDOUT)))
I’ve tested foundry inspector and although he was good, he’s a little bit fragile as an artifact creature (the easiest card type to remove).
Whenever he hit the field he was the first to go.
Kind of he mentality of the green player dropping a defense of the heart on turn 3. Nobody likes where it’s going and it’s gonna get stopped.
He’s a great drop early game but he’d get destroyed so fast he seemed less and less worth having.
kyren toy even as a 3 for 1 is really good because of that bank effect. It’s a solid card.
spatial contortion is a pass for me. It doesn’t hit anywhere near enough things that I’d end up shooting it at the first viable target. A BOP or something!
scorched ruins is a hard pass for me. In the meta I play this deck in it would set me back too far. Every deck that my Kozi competes against would punish me as soon as it hit the field. Especially with [card][assassin’s trophy/card] being a thing that’s in fashion to throw at my land base!!
Great card in theory but the reality would hurt too much.
I’m not seeing what batterskull is doing for you apart from a paradox engine interaction? Is that just for an extra blocker that can tank up Kozi as well?
I’m very very low on creatures. I throw Kozilek down by himself 90% of the time and have him just go to town. At the point in the game he initially hits the field he’ll recover nearly half of an opponents board so there’s usually not very much blowback from doing it. Nobody wants to destroy him anymore to give me more cards and if they kill him. Brilliant!
Aggro becks can be a pain but all you do is hit them first. Most aggro builds can be shut down in the early game by a turn 4 or 5 annihilator as they tend not to be able to recover. Even voltron aggro tend to have all their eggs in one basket. Just blow the bottom out of the basket with Kozilek!
The only time I feel my lack of creatures is a problem is when facing token strategies but having three or four more creatures won’t help me any. ratchet bomb does though! Sideboard it in with powder keg and get to drawing them up!
ward of bones has had me tempted for ages but I’ve yet to test it. I may give it a try but I’d need a foil one. All my deck is foiled apart from the cards that aren’t available in foil. They’re altered to have either Kozilek in them or to be all bismuthy like Kozilek’s blight.
tabernacle is brilliant. It really really is it does exactly what you want it to do and I too have a pretty convincing proxy.
I have it sideboarded for when I need it but I don’t like playing it because of the bad feels it can bring to a table if someone doesn’t have an answer to it. It usually leads to me getting hated out when I run it.
I completely understand where the hate comes from though. Nothing’s worse than sitting down to play Magic only to find that someone has dropped a card that prevents you from actually playing. I get it.
Usually I let the table know about the power level of my Kozi deck before bringing it to play if they've never seen it before. For those that have I often just ask "what deck should I play?" since I carry multiple decks with me to my LGS and the first response is always either "not Kozi" or "you can bring out Kozilek." That way I don't really worry about having 'hateful' cards in my list.
@Runnin: I run both Mana Crypt and Kyren Toy. The toy is one of the best 3-drop mana rocks you can use so I highly recommend it (also the foil is really pretty).
Foundry Inspector is pretty bad, it dies to removal and doesn't cheapen Kozi. It seems solid for a Karn, Silver Golem deck, but here if you want that kind of effect run The Immortal Sun. It's been pretty decent/nice for me so far, as the effect is pretty powerful (especially in conjunction with Helm of Awakening which I also run).
I suggest using either Transmogrifying Wand or Brittle Effigy. At least one of the two, if not both. We're light on removal and those two are the best we've got. I personally use Brittle Effigy solely because of how important exile is in my meta, as well as its cheap cost to just plop down at any time (great synergy with Clock of Omens for that reason).
I don't use Scorched Ruins, too fragile in the face of Wasteland and Strip Mine, and it comes down too late to really do a whole ton. If nobody plays any land destruction in your meta it seems decent/good.
@Rasputin101 Great alter! I'm still a bit salty there is no foil Basalt Monolith yet, but what can I do. I'm only a few cards off foiling the whole thing at this point.
I would also agree with Tabernacle being great - the card shuts down so many decks its not even remotely fair.
@forgek I managed to snag a Alpha Basalt Monolith during a time it was going for 10 dollars haha. Thats how i solved the problem with not being able to get a foiled one.
I've also put an "order" on the foiled Kyren Toy. Its cheap and oh so pretty. The Immortal Sun is bad in our meta. Our Meta is mostly a bunch of goodstuff decks that MAYBE has one Garruk and a JTMS. I think its much better to have access to one of the new removals i got. Staff of Nin would get the cut for it i guess, since it draws cards and cheapens the cost of spells, but Staff also works as removal and combopiece.
And to both you and @Rasputin101 , we all seem to foil out this particular deck haha. Im missing 8 cards atm, i could make it completly foil now but the unfoiled cards are so good haha. Sadly i had to "downtrade" my Alpha Mana Vaultfor emergency cash. But oh well.
@Rasputin101Batterskull is there because of that reason yes, it combos with the Engine, its a repeatable blocker and lifegain. Plus its something that eats an edict effect, which is good if i have kozilek out and don't want to sacrifice it.
Plus, thats also one of the reasons i have this kozilek. Sure, i can win really early and take over the game with cardadvantage and counters, but the games usually used to go to mid/late game pretty often. Thats why the lifegain could be quite appreciated. Also, it powers up Inkmoth Nexus for a eventual kill, it isn't that situational of a solution.
Also thought the same about Spatial Contortion, but i felt like a answer during another players turn or the controller of the creature i wanted removed could tapout. Also my meta runs quite a few 3 and less toughness creatures.
Btw, finding a foiled Ward of Bones was a pain if you don't want to pay unnecessary prices, atleast it was for me at the time. Its from Eventide, a small set that didn't get a huge printrun. I found it in a shop somewhere and of course they wanted quite a penny for it, but i managed to get the price down somehow.
And yes, about Tabernacle, that was also such a thing of why i didn't play it. And reminding the players that the upkeep cost is in play, the accidental slips of them forgetting and then you gotta remind them that their board should be dead etc. Not all that fun since it takes away from the atmosphere, depending on opponents of course. Recently i haven't really played with the group im most comfortable with.
Before when i had the transformative sideboard for swapping out the kozilek versions, i mostly swapped out certain typical The Great distortion cards for Mana rocks and a wee bit of more staxy pieces.
EDIT: Took some inspiration from your use of fonts @forgek
@Forgek I’m at a point where I won’t play the deck unless I’m at the ‘broken table’. I don’t need to announce what it’s like or what it does, just when I’m in a group with certain other players it’s always an anything goes game.
I have 12 other decks that play the long fun games. Kozi’s for the win fast or die games so rarely end up with bad feels at the table.
I want a foil Basalt Monolith so bad it hurts my soul. I’ve no idea in what context they could print one though. It’d have to be a masters set I guess b it they’re not doing those much anymore.
I’m currently testing brittle effigy. I’ve yet to draw it in game though. Seems I only ever get it in hand after it no longer matters and my hand size is at 75 with infinite in the pool.
I like that it’s a low cost artifact to chain with Paradox Engine and makes a nice chain with inspiring statuary.
@Runnin I’ll play a non-foil ward of bones if the feeling takes over. It’s especially strong in my super low creature build.
I need to test the Immortal Sun . Every aspect of it is brilliant apart from the nonbo with our own walkers. I have trouble with daretti, scrap savant completely ruining my board state so it might not be the worst thing to happen.
I also got shot of my haven of the spirit dragon. One land that drags Ugin back wasn’t good enough for me.
Also, how much do you activate springjack pasture? 4 for a 0/1 is a lot!
Can confirm The Immortal Sun has been good for me so far, but its sometimes awkward to cast. Walkers are pretty common in my meta, and some decks rely heavily on them to win the game, so it stays in for now.
Nice kyren toy. You won’t be disappointed with it, I promise.
I’ve just had the Immortal Sun turn up today. I’m most likely going to swap out geode golem for testing.
The golem is great in theory but I’m finding it’s slowing the tempo a bit.
Currently finding that the 5 mana going into the golem could be better spent towards a rock and a utility activation and it’s being passed over for other cards and by the time I get around to casting it, the ‘optimal time’ to play it had passed.
As it stands I think that’s where the switch will be.
I don’t think springjack pasture is all that good in terms of cost for effect.
To be honest I don’t love trading post either but the artifact back to hand I appealing with inbuilt theft protection for Kozi at the same time. Shame trading post targets the artifact rather than saying ‘return an artifact’. Means you have to have an artifact to target rather than using it as a free sac outlet
I didn't know what to switch for the Kyren Toy in my list, but i figured i could switch out Mind's Eyefor it and see how it'll work. Sadly i only got 1 game in tonight with the deck and didn't draw it. We played with two beginners, figured i could show it off but chose not to keep playing the deck just in case i would destroy them too much haha.
What do you guys think about Mind's Eye?
I guess im in a different position since im playing Kozilek V2, but it would be cool to hear what you guys think.
I don't rate mind's eye all that much as I find holding the mana up for it slows down my game plan and normally goes toward a Kozilek draw.
It was in the deck about two years ago but like a lot of tested cards that got the axe, sat in my hand too long and ended up redundant.
I can't see anything else in your build that I would cut over mind's eye apart from maybe the trading post but I realised after my last post that you're running distortion so trading post is actually good with the discard ability.
Trading Post has long been cut from my deck, its too slow and doesn't really do anything. Springjack Pasture is an even less impactful card from my experience, so it left the list around three/four years ago. Edit: I need to mention that Trading Post is still a very fine card normally. If you're still putting together a list, especially on a budget, this card is perfectly fine for the deck.
Zhalfirin Void on the other hand has been nice. Its good in Modern Eldrazi and its good here - smoothing early draws is really important for Kozi. (also the foil of this card is absolutely gorgeous, like wow)
Geode Golem is incredible imho. If I can ramp normally via a Gilded Lotus or something then it's not really necessary, but in the awkward draws where I don't get enough ramp or when someone blows up a rock or two, it really shines. Love the card for the deck.
Mind's Eye is too slow in most cases, and Kozilek draws all the cards we need honestly. If your meta is a bit slow or low powered I think its a fine card and the masterpiece foil is cheap and looks nice. I wouldn't fault anyone at all for running it.
Can confirm: the Immortal Sunis an awkward cast.
I feel like I’m losing something just by playing it.
Although it’s good I think it might be a touch too slow and 6 is a huge investment, but, at the same time that cost reduction won a game.
I had it three out of seven games and there seems to be only one good time to cast it and that’s the turn after the first Kozilek cast.
Drew it once in the early stages and it was heavy in my hand!
I think Geode Golem may have been the wrong cut while I test
Geode Golem seems much too important to this deck strategy. Being able to circumvent the casting cost of Kozi seems like a pretty big deal.
Based on my experience in MTG Arena, The Immortal Sun isn't particularly awe-inspiring or impactful enough to even warrant a side-board inclusion anymore. And if the card isn't being played in a 60 card format, I'm hesitant to give it dedicated deck space personally.
Glad that The Deletening hasn't affected your thread too much! It's come a long way from its first initial creation, comrade!
Geode Golem seems much too important to this deck strategy. Being able to circumvent the casting cost of Kozi seems like a pretty big deal.
Its difficult to replace cards now days. But yeah, i think it could be a good silverbullet. Attacking a nonprotected player and cast kozilek. Not too shabby.

I feel like its a sideboard card. If you have opponents that love planeswalkers,i can see it being really good. Atm, I have Staff of Nin in that spot.

I get it.

I would also agree with Tabernacle being great - the card shuts down so many decks its not even remotely fair.
@Rasputin101 Batterskull is there because of that reason yes, it combos with the Engine, its a repeatable blocker and lifegain.

But im thinking of cutting it and maybe Haven of the Spirit Dragon for Scavenger Grounds and something else, i guess Zhalfirin Void(luckily i got foils of those cards. I also got a Dust Bowl somewhere, gotta find it.)

What do you guys think about Mind's Eye?
I guess im in a different position since im playing Kozilek V2, but it would be cool to hear what you guys think.

Based on my experience in MTG Arena, The Immortal Sun isn't particularly awe-inspiring or impactful enough to even warrant a side-board inclusion anymore. And if the card isn't being played in a 60 card format, I'm hesitant to give it dedicated deck space personally.
Glad that The Deletening hasn't affected your thread too much! It's come a long way from its first initial creation, comrade!
