I wanted another Casual deck to play against newer players or those with weaker collections. My buddies and I were discussing that Boros Commanders need innate card advantage for them to be viable, considering how terrible the colours are at the marathon that is EDH. Someone mentioned Tiana after we were browsing EDHRec and a meme got stuck in my head. After a few days I just couldn't shake it, so I decided to build a Tiana deck.
Also, I've been wanting to make a deck that uses Sunforger since forever and there's no better excuse than a Boros Commander.
Stolen Strategy is unreliable, I didn't have enough mana to abuse it. I could see it being better in a RG deck, as the Green Ramps you to the point where you can cast everything you rip off of the top. Etali does something similar and way cooler, so the Dino goes in.
Curse of Opulence is effectively a Red Sol Ring, so I cut one of the less impressive pieces of Ramp in the form of Fellwar Stone.
Rethether sat in my hand a lot of the time, which surprised me. Darksteel Mutation is a great answer to pesky Commanders, and then it will probably continually make reappearances with my Commander.
Faith Healer fits right into this deck as something I'd want to take advantage of, especially the Cantrip Enchantments. Buffering my life also helps greatly. I put in Eternal Dragon to have another way to fetch Mistveil Plains, but I found it might be slightly overkill.
Cut a Mountain for Myriad, that's probably the last Mountain I can cut for a little while.
I actually didn't like Sigarda's Aid in my first run through draft, I do a few games before committing to writing down a deck. I do like that Captured by the Consulate spicy tech; toss it on an Artifact or Enchantment Creature and now my stuff can't be Disenchanted.
Captured by the Consulate provides a little protection for your Commander, and can return via Tiana's Marchesa like ability.
It's a tool for combating collusion between 2 other players. If you played alot of Commander games and many players/playgroup, you will realize, Some games the players are colluding.. and it's very hard trying to put aura or equiping yr commander with 2 to 3 player's worth of resources/removal.
Chained to the Rocks was the most similar, so that's what swapped.
I realized Kor Spiritdancer's price bottomed out with Battlebond, so I acquired one. I had to struggle with deciding what to cut and in the end, I went for Hammer of Nazahn. It is very nice with auto-equips and making the Creature indestructible but in the end it was just a decent protection piece. With a lot of pieces of this deck, I don't mind things dying because I get them back via one way or another.
Terrain Generator and Mikokoro are also going to be great for me sitting back, holding up mana and doing as I please.
Spirit Link didn't really impress me; I did like that it gave me life but that wasn't enough. On Serra's Wings gives me Vigilance on a Creature to swing in for free Lifelink hits.
Ethereal Armor didn't really impress me; a lot of the 1 mana Enchantments haven't, so I'm down to what I think are absurdly good. Aurelia's double attack step is good, just based off of that but it has a lot of synergy with a lot of cards in this list.
I really like Forsake the Worldly, so much so I considered cutting Tithe in its place. Tithe is just too vital to setting up an infinite Sunforger with Mistveil Plains, even though I already have two other cards that Tutor for it. Redudancy is king, I guess. In the end, Return to Dust has more utility than Forsake, so that's what edged me into cutting Forsake. I put in an actual hard counter in with Lapse of Certainty, which is going to be great if I can recycle it for a soft lock.
I had a friend beg me to end a wincon to this deck after he got eliminated early and then I proceeded to slowly grind the table out. He suggested Approach of the Second Sun, but that's because he saw the deck humming along with card advantage. I prefer cards with low floors instead of high ceilings. Eldrazi Conscription will end a player, one way or another. I decided to cut Sigil of the Empty Throne because this deck actually doesn't cast Enchantments too often, so many things cause them to enter play attached (Sun Titan, Emeria Shepherd, Starfield of Nyx), that it wasn't the backbreaking wincon I thought it would be. Conscription certainly will be, and due to being an Aura, it has a lot more ways to keep coming back unless it gets Exiled.
Burning Anger was a way to burn down opponents who had massive boards or were behind a pillowfort. I found that most of my Creatures want to Turn Sideways, so I rarely had a large Creature sitting to Burn someone EOT. I'm putting in the Fugue because it'll be great at stealing things, attacking others into bad situations and if it dies, I get the Fugue back. Hell, I can kill someone with their own Commander if it comes down to it.
I liked what I saw with Oracle's Vault, though sometimes it would whiff pretty badly. The amount of setup required also made any time it is destroyed agonizing. As soon as I saw Chaos Wand in the M19 spoiler, I knew that was a card that R/W would like. This deck does hold up a lot of mana, whether I'm bluffing or I am holding interaction. In the case of Chaos Wand, this is great, as it could fetch me so many random cards from opponents. I know I can bank off of certain opponents for Ramp, Counters or Kill. I am hopeful Chaos Wand is useful instead of completely random.
Boreas Charger does a better job than Hart, mostly because the Charger can fetch Mistveil Plains which I value higher than the two Basics the Hart fetches at twice the mana cost. It is also giving my incentive to find a Sacred Foundry.
I also noticed that the deck leaned slightly too much towards White; I put in two Mountains in to see where that gets me. I think one is probably enough, so I am overcompensating, for now.
While he is part of my draw suite, I never found that I had time to put him down unless I was way ahead. So he gets the axe. There were a few options I was considering but in the end I went with Mammoth Umbra with how much it protects my Commander, increased clock and Vigilance is great with a Flying First Striker so I can offence and defence.
So... I realized my paper copy didn't have any of the Wraths that were on this digital copy. That would explain why I never drew a Wrath when I needed one. So, these are the cuts I made for what was effectively in my online list:
I also realized I usually had mana open for tricks but not always had the trick in hand. Adding Mystifying Maze will give me something to do. I'm still leaning a little too white; however, I do have Emeria, the Sky Ruin to think about. I'm thinking of cutting Inspiring Vantage for a Plains now that I have two nonbasic Plains I can fetch with all of my Plains fetch cards.
I have a terrible habit of being greedy, so I make deckbuilding decisions to compensate for that. I always play Reiterate as if Buyback is mandatory; after all, it's super card advantage. I cut Reiterate because I would play it stupidly, Fury Storm is just a one shot deal. The best part is that Tiana does tend to get recast once or twice a game, meaning that Fury Storm will pack a punch when I copy an opponent's spell.
Slayers' Stronghold never did anything, I've cut it for something that will help me with the more expensive spells: Serra's Sanctum. I don't have any illusions of it being as good as it was in Daxos but even generate two or three mana puts it ahead of Temple of the False God.
Kor Haven is a strictly superior Mystifying Maze.
Inspiring Vantage kept coming into play tapped. I didn't value its Red against its ETBT nature. A simple Plains goes in to help with the Emeria, the Sky Ruin count.
I got so excited over Boreas Charger's effect I failed to read a pertinet word: leaves, that is not enters. So, it actually doesn't help ramp me. I also realized the deck can only win through combat damage, which might not be feasible. I can get a card advantage engine going, so I've put in Approach to help me survive some damage and if I got a card advantage engine roaring, I can quickly return it and play it. Mistveil Plains also gives me redundancy if it gets countered.
Chaos Wand was, well, chaotic. I had all of these brilliant scenarios planned, like activated it to hit a Counterspell when using on a Blue Player or Ramping with a Green Player's spells. That did not happen. Dawn of Hope looks like it would help the deck, as it is a little light on defenders, but also helps me draw cards.
Serra's Sanctum was just too fiddly, so a Plains goes in.
I don't have that many Equipment, the Stonehewer is big and clunky and he's a body in a deck that cares about Enchantments. Tiana is quite the lighting rod, for some reason people don't like recursive Soul Tithes. Gift of Immortality should help keep her alive, as that's usually the problem with Tiana: someone kills her and I have to spend a few turns rebuilding her back to Aura Angel that she is.
Just because I can doesn't mean I should; Celestial Mantle has been responsible for so many times the table collapsing on me. I just couldn't help going to over a hundred. There have been an influx of no life gain cards recently, such as False Cure, Erebos, God of the Dead and Archfiend of Despair. With that in mind, I've decided to add something that protects Tiana, as that is how the deck hums along optimally. It was between the Ward, which will make her a better blocker and add evasion, or Mammoth Umbra for the Vigilance and more Totem Armor. I decided on the Ward because I didn't want to have to keep re-casting the Umbra, even if I think it might be better for the deck. We'll have to see.
I find that the deck doesn't have mana problems, so I am cutting a mana rock for utility. I'm putting in Ward of Lights because it will give my deck a ridiculous amount of utility. Giving any Creature Protection of a particular Colour can be devastating. It'll stop Damage, Enchantments, Coloured Equipments, Blocking or being Targeting. This means I can name a Colour to cause Auras to fall off, make unexpected blocks or just flat out use it as a Counterspell for targeted removal. With the Flash clause causing the Enchantment to be Sacrificed, Tiana can then return Ward on the next End Step. I'm thinking this will lead to some serious shenanigans; plus it's an Enchantment Aura so a bunch of my draw effects are predicated on that for them to work.
Tiana dying has always been a problem, especially when your opponent gang up on you.
I ran the mammoth umbra and *** effect to cripple creatures deck but it's getting harder to stick an enchantment on tiana recently
That's what I'm hoping Ward of Lights will help with. I might need to ramp harder and then play Tiana with protection available. Yeah, despite getting almost no buzz from anywhere on the interwebs she's gaining a reputation in my play group just because I can keep resurrecting obnoxious Auras. I was thinking of using Cho-Manno's Blessing but I like that Ward of Lights sacs itself so I can keep doing shenanigans with it. I might end up running both.
Perhaps I should also swap Thran Dynamo with Gilded Lotus. It seems a lot of my solutions require double pips which Thran Dynamo doesn't help with.
The lack of colour has screwed me a few times, or pinched my card selection. Thran Dynamo is the most similar to Gilded Lotus' coloured mana and so that's the swap.
I think Burnished Hart is probably a worse mana rock than Worn Powerstone; however, it fetches Plains for Emeria Shepherd and Emeria, the Sky Ruin shenanigans. After Hart, I think Powerstone is the next on the chopping block.
Also, I've been wanting to make a deck that uses Sunforger since forever and there's no better excuse than a Boros Commander.
