Have you ever just wanted to do the craziest things ever in Commander? Have you ever wanted to mill everyone to the brink of madness? How about rob them of their precious cards and cast them for yourself? Reanimate their own creatures for yourself? What about casting all of the spells in your graveyard?
If you answered yes to any of these questions, well, you're in luck you maniacal fiend. You've entered the Maelstrom.
This is my Yidris, Maelstrom Wielder build. It is the culmination of all my wildest dreams and guilty pleasures. It is the most insane deck I have ever made; and thus why I had to introduce it to you.
The deck's focus is somewhat of an amalgam of wheels, control, recursion, and chaos.
With access to a hefty amount of wheel cards, we can easily begin to sift through our own cards while simultaneously ridding our opponents of cards and filling the graves. This allows for some really interesting gameplay! While most people aim to use punishing cards to make your opponents pay for the wheel effects, my deck focuses more on using everyone's graveyard as a resource. With lots of reanimation effects, we can easily steal people's scariest monsters and use them against our enemies, and even their spells. The recursion engines in the deck keep your cards flowing from out of your graveyard, and as your enemies struggle to find some semblance of order and safety, you can hit them again and again with your refreshed card supply.
This deck is usually played in a casual multiplayer setting, and is fairly budget save for cards that I have collected over time. I didn't want to build Yidris like I see a lot of decklists on the internet. My questions to all of you are what cards should I add? Idk if I have enough ramp/removal/card draw to make my strategy work. Are there any good budget inclusions I am missing?
I am open to all discussion and would love any advice people could give me on improving the deck. Thanks in advance!
Hi Creed! I'll check out your list, but I'd first suggest you try posting this under the "Multiplayer Commander Decklists" you might get more responses. Also, your list would be easier to read if you separated your list by card type. If you need any help formatting a decklist, there's a handy link in my signature.
As outcry mentions, you'll probably see more action in the decklist section. I can add a couple of quick suggestions from my time playing Yidris, though. There's probably two areas you really need to work on.
You need ways to make sure Yidris can connect. Double strike is really, really hand here. Not only because it means he's likely to do some damage, but because his cascade triggers twice. Fireshrieker could do it, Blood Mist is nice and cheap, there's plenty of options here. Xenagos, God of Revels is a haste enabler and can get you through with trample damage. He's a staple here, tbh. You could also go for Whispersilk Cloak or Aqueous Form. Or Thassa, God of the Sea would be really decent to help you set up cascades too.
Secondly, you've got a lot of high cost spells here. In my experience, once you've colour fixed and set up Yidris to swing with impunity, your mana pool isn't exactly flush. It really helps having an engine to generate some big mana, or a way to play them for free. Whether that be something like Cabal Coffers, Storm the Vault, tons of rocks and Paradox Engine, it doesn't matter, but you will need it. Once you've swung once or twice with Yidris and people see how much his hits bruise, it won't be long before you need to recast him, so you need to make each cascade chain count. Personally, I've found Nature's Will really helpful. It means you can hit some nice cascades without worrying too much about responses. You could also go for it's big brother, Bear Umbra or Sword of Feast and Famine if you have those cards or the budget to afford them. In terms of playing for free, Possibility Storm is really nice here - you get two cast triggers, so you get two cascade triggers. It's not exactly free, but 2 for 1 is better than 1 for 1, even if you don't know precisely what you end up with. It also helps disrupt any control your opponents might try to sling your way.
My build is a little off the beaten track, as it's primarily a Vorthos build, but it does play well too. Feel free to hit the link in my sig. Otherwise, these two points really are crucial to making Yidris a successful build.
Have you considered Sunbird’s Invocation? I have a Vial Smasher the Fierce/Thrasios, Triton Hero deck which has the same colors as yours, and like yours, rewards us for playing cards from hand. And like your commander, this also encourages you to cast high-CMC spells from hand to trigger additional spells.
If you answered yes to any of these questions, well, you're in luck you maniacal fiend. You've entered the Maelstrom.
