Hello everyone,
I am fairly new to Magic. I am trying to make an Omnath Deck that can compete with my group, who have been playing for many years. I have done a great deal of research and started to put my deck together. I wanted to reach out to the magic community to see if I could get some suggestions and tips. Thanks in Advance.
Deck List:
Omnath, Locus of Mana
Vorinclex, Voice of Hunger
Seedborn Muse
Caged Sun
Mana Reflection
Green Sun's Zenith
Gaea's Cradle®
Rhonas the Indomitable
Vizier of the Menagerie
Kamahl, Fist of Krosa
Worldspine Wurm
Lotus Cobra
Crop Rotation
Worldly Tutor
Boundless Realms
Natural Order
39 Forrest
Hey,
As I mentioned in fairly new to the game so I haven't completely figured out how to play the deck. I'm open to all suggestions but if I am correct I think my meta would be aggressive and faster play.
I don't really have a budget at this point. If I like a card I'll get it lol.
Our Group only has a few rules. No mass land destruction and current ban list
For combo decks it's harder to recommend specific cards but having cheap artifact hate like nature's claim and nature's slate is generally a good idea due to combo wanting to play bunch of mana rocks.
I see.. Well I really dont know my meta then but if it helps my deck will be mono green Omnath.. do you have any suggestions on what my meta could be/ strategies to play him as a general?
Hi ejkerr, and welcome to the Salvation Forums! Make sure you take some time to read the links posted above in your thread about how to use card tags, as this will really help you get more comments on your thread and help make it easier for people on here to review your thread and offer some advice. I would suggest editing your first post once you've reviewed the link ISBPathfinder left for you.
As to specific deck suggestions and how to play Omnath, Locus of Mana: I would first review a primer for Omnath, written by Xaios, located here. Most issues you will face during your deck building have probably already been dealt with by that author and those on his thread. It is a great resource, and I'm willing to bet if you make comments on that thread, that Xaios or someone more familiar with Omnath than myself will be willing to offer you all kinds of suggestions and tips. The primer also will help you in terms of how to play an Omnath deck.
That being said, you want to play things at instant speed as much as you can. In that way, you can just dump all your mana into your commander and wait to play things. So things that let you play cards at instant speed, like Yeva, Nature's Herald, Vedalken Orrery, Aluren, and Winding Canyons are helpful. Also, you will want to be able to have ways to protect your commander or use your mana that you've saved up in case your commander dies. Options include Momentous Fall, Greater Good, Asceticism, Ant Queen, and Wolfbriar Elemental.
You may not know your meta very well yet, but if we knew the commanders they use it would give us a good idea what the meta probably is like.
But heck, even that you're listing Vorinclex and Gaea's Cradle might be giving us a strong indication of the meta's power level if they're also running big cards like those.
My group has been playing a very long time and together. They all have a number of decks and run many big cards which is why I am seeking suggestions to compete with them
To me, the skills of piloting decks versus building decks are largely different. There's a relationship between the two*, but here in this thread you're trying to learn how to build. Piloting is, in my opinion, the more relevant skill of the two when you're starting out in the format.
One suggestion I've seen sometimes as far as learning is to borrow decks. So, for example, if somebody you'll be playing with is willing to let you borrow one of their decks for the gaming session, that's a good opportunity. Even better is if they're willing to show up 30 minutes early and give you a briefing on how that deck is meant to work, which is essentially training on piloting it. But just practice and experience will help a lot, and piloting a variety of decks from your meta, if possible, will give you a useful and different perspective on your meta than just playing against those decks.
Netdecking and primers in particular are an excellent source of training for both piloting and building, since primers explain both. Having said that, a number of the cards that came to mind for Omnath of are in the primer that Outcryqq linked to. So definitely use that heavily, at least at first.
* That relationship being: a. How you pilot a deck will necessarily be dependent on what cards are in it and the circumstances during a game; b. How you build a deck will be influenced by your playstyle preferences and your group's meta (power level, what things you'll typically need to have an answer for, etc.).
Thank you appreciate the input. I will certainly see if I can borrow a deck.. I have played with omnath a bit and I think he is fun to play. I am thinking I will try and start with as much of the primer as possible but would like to tweak it a bit and make it more personal as well. I am taking all card suggestions seriously and will be testing as many combinations as possible as I play
