Of the 5 most recent 4c commanders, Yidris, Maelstrom Wielder is really the only one who has interested me - I finally picked him up the other day, as I've had plans to build for a while. I love crazy plays, janky combos and general chaos, so he's a good start.
There are a few cards in here i love and probably won't compromise on, but I'm definitely interested in harnessing the chaos - the whole idea is to make a gamestate that my deck thrives in, but most others won't. So in that respect I'm pretty happy to take suggestions.
Having had a reasonable chance to playtest, this deck hits silly storm counts and cascades easily - the trick is making it all achieve something meaningful. The deck needs fairly specific conditions - lots of mana, some degree of protection and haste for Yidris, and some game winning spells to cascade into. It feels like I'm nearly there, but there is still some playtesting to do before I'm totally happy with how things are looking.
To be clear, while I do want this deck to be as good as it can, I'm also not prepared to spend a whole lot of money on things like Sylvan Library and Sensei's Divining Top to fix the topdeck. I think if you're going to play cascade, embrace the chaos and let what happens happen. Partially this is a monetary issue, and partly this is acceding to the fact that cascade is a strong mechanic on its own anyway.
Any further suggestions or feedback, feel free to comment.
Some pretty vast changes to ensure better consistency - I'm finding storm count is super easy to rack up, it just isn't achieving a huge amount at present. One of my colleagues also mentioned it would be worth adding some further protection for Yidris, and a larger creature base. I've done so accordingly, adding a but more an army for Yidris to lead (not sure about Endrek Sahr without a sac outlet), and also a little more firepower for him while swinging with Xenagod.
Have yet to playtest changes, but at first blush seems a more consistent list. I've also ordered Maelstrom Wanderer and Shardless Agent for the list. Will add them in once I've picked them up from LGS.
In: Maelstrom Wanderer - Double cascade aside (which is a huge aside), he lends haste which is perfect for a recast of Yidris. Shardless Agent - Cascades into some of the more consistent ramp spells and mana rocks as needed, and as an artifact and a creature possibility storms into the same. Rampant Growth Explosive Vegetation - This was necessary - the deck is mana hungry.
Out: Endrek Sahr, Master Breeder - Nine times out of ten, he dies first creature I cast, and possibility storm makes him a one shot effect. Without reanimation, he's not worth it. Prismatic Geoscope - Entering tapped was the nail in the coffin. Easily replaced by ramp. Null Profusion - I love this card but it wasn't right here. Treacherous Terrain - Big burn, but also inconsistent and very expensive for a maybe kill. There are other cards I'd rather cast and there's nothing here that will cascade into it.
Had a play with this over the weekend. Interesting situation in that I started with Rampant Growth, Harrow and Evolving Wilds coming out to completely fix my colours very early. Then I ran out of gas. Played Yidris a couple times with Xenagos, God of Revels in play and did some damage, but never managed to cascade into anything significant. Long story short - this deck desperately needs some draw fixers. I'll likely be adding Mindmoil to cycle cascaders back into my deck, I may have a copy of Arjun, the Shifting Flame lying around too. These will help with playing bomb spells for free instead of paying full price for them. It'll also help churn through lands a bit more. That being said, they won't completely fix the problem. I'd almost consider adding Rites of Flourishing or Dictate of Kruphix to make this work a little better. Maybe Staff of Nin would do, I don't know. I'll be looking for solutions in the next few days.
Did a little revision last night, and need to recollate the decklist posted here - it's 2 cards short and I'm not sure what I've missed. That being said, I'd posted adding Mindmoil and it wasn't in the physical deck, so have since added it in lieu of Treacherous Terrain which has always sat in my hand not being played. Brainstorm will be good too, in lieu of Psychic Spiral - my wife hates it, but to be honest, it's not as impactful as it could be. Sure it mills a little, but we all now that's not the most impactful use of blue in EDH.
Have retired this iteration of the deck; Yidris is being rebuilt as a Vorthos deck. Rather than maim and bludgeon a thread that's had no traffic it seems easier to start a new one dedicated to the theme I've chosen and make it a lot shinier.
