Correct me if I'm wrong, but the way hapatra, vizier of poisons is worded will make it so you don't get the snake if a creature you control with infect or wither deals damage to a creature right? Because she says "Whenever you put a -1/-1 counter..." and wither says "This deals damage to creatures in the form of -1/-1 counters." So the creature with wither is putting the -1/-1 counter on the other creature not you, so no snake right? Granted, if you proliferate a -1/-1 counter that went onto an opponent's creature from a source with wither, that would get you a snake.
It's refering to an ability you control. You don't put counters with spells either, if you want to split hairs; the spell does.
Yeah you're right. I guess I'm just used to the old wording of "spell or ability you control." But the gatherer rulings address the issue: "If a creature with wither or infect deals damage to a creature, the controller of the creature with wither or infect puts that many -1/-1 counters on the second creature."
Other all-stars in the deck include Carnifex Demon. With a lot of creatures out, the amount of potential tokens I can make is beyond ridiculous. Thunderfoot Baloth was the final nail in the coffin. With so many creatures it's easy to overrun the opponents. For that reason I'm considering adding Craterhoof Behemoth and Pathbreak Ibex, as well. I'll most likely swap them in for Aboroth and Lichenthrope.
I also want to add Song of the Dryads for when annoying commanders are being played against. That way I can neutralize them without risking killing them with -1/-1 counters.
Every time I play this deck it's surprising how amazing it is! And super fun! The synergy is awesome! And since the Amonkhet block has a -1/-1 counter theme, I know that even more goodies will appear in the next set! Yay!

Aboroth and Lichenthrope were cut for better cards. Although cute, they were ultimately underperforming.
Corrosive Mentor is great in theory but the deck runs way more green creatures than black ones so it usually ended up doing nothing much. Has the snakes been black tokens (like the ones produced by Ophiomancer) then maybe it would've been worthwhile.
Deity of Scars was another underperformer. Sure, it provided tokens when entering the battlefield, but it required other cards to do so. It was a great attacker/blocker thanks to regenerating basically for free. But apart from that it was just taking up a slot for a better card.
Nylea, God of the Hunt gave all my creatures trample but it didn't inherently pump. It was swapped out for Thunderfoot Baloth which is more expensive but does the job. Nylea has the bonus of being indestructible but that doesn't matter in the face of -1/-1 counters.
Westvale Abbey can give me a very big, very angry demon upon transformation. Other than that I wasn't really using it. With so many mana dorks I was able to cut it and bring the land count to a still safe 36.
Beast Within, Scour from Existence, and Maelstrom Pulse provide some much needed removal. I don't worry about creatures since I can usually get rid of them with -1/-1 counters. However, there are other card types that could be quite troublesome so it's always important to run a couple of spot removal spells.
Painful Lesson is there for more drawing. It's important to be able to dig through the deck for answers.

Hm, the interactions with Forgotten Ancient would be great since I can get +1/+1 counters for free and then distribute them during my upkeep. Definitely worth considering! Thanks for suggesting it!
Made a slight change in the form of swapping out Shambling Swarm for Vhati il-Dal. Vhati can pretty much kill any creature outright if it has a -1/-1 counter and no boons or protection from its colors. Definitely glad I found a spot for it. Sorceress Queen is another card I want to slot in for potentially killing off a creature with two -1/-1 counters on it.

Hapatra is great. I've only played two games with my deck so far, but it was really powerful, if a little inconsistent. I need to work on card draw and color consistency.
Have you considered Sudden Spoiling and/or Power Conduit? Spoiling can get around an opposing Melira, and can be used as a surprise split second wipe for creatures that already have two -1/-1 counters on them - which is really powerful considering how many people would normally want to respond to a wipe. Conduit is great at negating two friendly fire counters - remove a -1/-1 to add a +1/+1, which either takes care of a second counter or stays there to deal with the next one.

Yeah, I considered Sudden Spoiling because it's a potential unavoidable boardwipe for an opponent. Power Conduit is something I hadn't thought of and the best thing about it is that all I have to do is tap it; no mana required.
I took a gander over at your list. What about it makes you feel is inconsistent? If anything, you've chocked it full of as many cards with -1/-1 counters as possible. Maybe that's the problem? It's too saturated?

I'm a huge fan of Sudden Spoiling just because it does so much - pseudo-fog, nerfs abilities, potential wipe in this deck, and very hard to respond to.
As for why my deck seems inconsistent, I've only played two games, but one had an explosive start and then lost steam, while the other had a very slow start with an overwhelming end-game. I realize I need more games to see how it really plays, but I feel like better card draw and better mana fixing would make it run smoother.

Even though mass -1/-1 counters will kill off my mana dorks, I run them anyway because they're so clutch early game. Hapatra is super easy to cast so it's not for her. However, they allow me to cast multiple things and get a faster board state than most. If they're able to survive later on thanks to boons and pumps then that's just a bonus.
I quickly realized that chocking the deck full of cards that produce -1/-1 counters wasn't enough. Sure, I'd make a couple of snakes, but when the midgame came around and wraths were more frequent and opponents started dropping fatties - it'd become a huge problem. So I went for the midrange route as well - protect my own creatures by pumping them and then being able to snipe opponents' creatures. Vhati il-Dal started working immediately. So now I definitely have to find a slot for Sudden Spoiling and Sorceress Queen.
Maybe you can follow a similar route: mana dorks aplenty to start off strong and then cards to make sure your opponents can't overwhelm you through your -1/-1 counters and deathtouch snakes.
As for Sudden Spoiling, I definitely want to find a slot for it. I've used it before in other decks. When I got attacked with a massive army let by Avacyn, Angel of Hope, I played Sudden Spoiling in response and just blocked everything. It was amazing. Another card I want to try and fit in the deck is Flesh-Eater Imp, which seems like a very solid and viable wincon. This means I have 4 cards in queue for the deck:

The good thing about the combo is that it doesn't need Hapatra if you have Flourishing Defenses in play. Also, if you do the combo with Cinderhaze Wretch you can make all opponents discard their entire hands, as well. There's a lot of potential in including Ivy Lane Denizen in the deck, for sure!

True, but on the other hand she will save your board when Banshee is in play. Still have high hopes for her... even more then for Mazirek. Will have to test her out
Lol, if you gotta attack with key creatures to "save them" with Drana's abilities, your opponents can just block them and kill them right then and there. I've found that continuous pump has worked best. For example, Creakwood Liege costs 1 more than Drana, Liberator of Malakir and is much better. Your creatures don't need to attack, it doesn't need to attack, either. You also get a 3/3 each upkeep. It pumps all the creatures in the deck and gives a double boost to Hapatra.

Adding Flesh-Eater Imp has been great. It has flying which can be irksome to some opponents. But the other day I won a game thanks to it and Rogue's Passage. Infect is not necessarily the route I want to go, but it is great when it connects. The deck doesn't really have any solid wincon and it would usually run out of steam and lose to an opponent's blow-out play. However, I've won with some blow-out plays of my own concerning creatures with infect. Maybe I should add more?

I too have been brewing with Hapatra, without wanting to use infect (considering it cheap way to win quickly).
Im more focused on generating tokens and swamping the board with a horde of 1/1s but found great use for Zuluport Cutthroat and Blood Artist and Soul Snuffers.
Usually we can get a bunch of 1/1 tokens out relatively quickly...
Last game I played I had doubling season in, 9 creatures on the board inc Hapatra (5 of which were my opponents).
Played soul snuffers (18 tokens), Channeler initiate (killing soul snuffers), played zuluport cutthroat.
Next turn, eternal witness'd soul snuffers back to hand and in to play, killing off 20 creatures, doing 20 damage, gained 60 life and created 42 tokens.
There has to be a way of recurring soul snuffers with your 1/1 tokens for lethal damage.
Sounds amazing. But then you're really just using Hapatra as an engine for some aristocrats strategy which would rely heavily on reanimation. That would mean that too many things are going on at once. Would that make it too convoluted?

I like a deck that has many different win cons, less boring, harder to stop.
When the above played out I was pretty impressed and the possibilities of using this as a strategy stuck out. A sub theme so to speak. Not as big a toolbox as Sidisi... utility belt perhaps.

make snek!
That's fine and all, but you have to jump over too many hoops to accomplish it. The synergy will be very difficult to achieve being as if Zulaport Cutthroat or Blood Artist are in play when you distribute mass -1/-1 counters, they're gonna bite the dust - possibly before killing off the table. Also, you'd need to add consistent and effective reanimation, as well. That's not to say it's impossible, but if Hapatra is your main source of token production, you need to have lots of support for her and that strategy. So it's a lot of different things vying for attention in the deck - and they don't necessarily synergize all that well. Just my 2¢.
I wanted to add reanimation to the deck in order to retrieve key creatures that have died due to the counters. But found that it's easier to prevent it altogether thanks to the boons. This also gives me a menacing horde that can go into the red zone after I've eliminated most other creatures in play. So I'm still experimenting on a sweet spot. For the moment, I like where my deck is; I'm just anxious to see what other -1/-1 counter support Hour of Devastation will provide.

Unfortunately, Hour of Devastation didn't have all that many cards that interact with -1/-1 counters. Apparently it wasn't a mechanic for the block so much as for Amonkhet. That's quite disappointing being as the block gave two commanders that care about -1/-1 counters.

Here are some slight changes to the deck to make it more streamlined. Although most of the changes were to the land base, Obelisk Spider definitely needed to be added:

Black Market is a great card but I don't really have any mana sinks or that many expensive spells. I'm also running a fair share of mana dorks so I'm producing quite a lot of mana already.

I would run that but I already use Triumph of the Hordes as a wincon in my Edric, Spymaster of Trest deck and Craterhoof Behemoth in my Sidisi, Brood Tyrant and Polukranos, World Eater decks; so I don't want to recycle too many things between decks.

Definitely going in the deck!
Unfortunately, Hour of Devastation didn't have all that many cards that interact with -1/-1 counters. Apparently it wasn't a mechanic for the block so much as for Amonkhet. That's quite disappointing being as the block gave two commanders that care about -1/-1 counters.

Black Market is a great card but I don't really have any mana sinks or that many expensive spells. I'm also running a fair share of mana dorks so I'm producing quite a lot of mana already.
