The deck desperately wants draw and a discussion on Rumpy's Daxos thread about how Skullclamp rarely draws him cards made me realize that's the same for me. I can't slap Skullclamp on Daxos because Commanders don't die and when I throw it onto one of my Daxosmen, they tend to be too large after a while to trade in combat. So if I need draw and Skullclamp is somehow not providing, it cuts the axe. I've replaced it with Arguel's Blood Fast which I think suits the deck a lot more. It is less chunky draw and when my life goes low, it turns into a way to gain life which my Daxosmen are free to do so and are quite large to provide a lot.
I've added Thaumatic Compass to my Wants because I think it also fits Daxos' big mana strategy with tutoring up lands, thinning the deck and making sure I hit land drops. Later when I have more than 7 lands, it turns into a mana source but also a defense. Burnished Hart is another overly costly source of ramp in the deck, so it's my current earmarked cut.
There's a love hate relationship with Burnished Hart I find. Sometimes you want to do one thing or the other and Hart gets rushed out, killed without fulfilling its landfetch duties. Other times it is a late game draw and mostly useless. With there only being a mid-game appropriate play with Hart, it's a card I sometimes want to axe and othertimes I'm fine with it. I'm testing Thaumatic Compass, which transform into a much cheaper Maze of Ith that also thins the deck when I have spare mana. Lategame, early game, it goes well. Hell, by costing 2 it means it curves right into Daxos instead of taking up the 3 CMC spot.
Hmm, that's an interesting observation. And if you draw it late game, you can just set it down and have it flip in your end step. I didn't even consider it, writing it off as a crappy Journeyer's Kite knockoff. Please, do report back how it fares, although I've got a gut feel it's gonna be a smidgen too slow.
I lent the deck out and the Compass was pretty good at playing politics, as the guy would untap my Edgar Markov afterwards so I'd have a blocker. With such hospitality, my board state grew and became threatening so I died first and then the guy piloting my Daxos proceeded to close out the game. He also used it twice to fetch land drops that I figure he might've missed. So far, promising! I am also tempted to downgrade Daxos on my sig's list and upgrade Markov, as Daxos just loses to particular strategies. The problem is that while it is slow, it probably beats any super casual decks with the value it builds.
I cut Attrition from my Marchesa, the Black Rose because I wanted a mana-less sac outlet, so I tried to find room in Daxos. After discussing it with the guy who piloted my Daxos, he remarked that the deck doesn't really need colorless and so Worn Powerstone doesn't really do much. It's not like I use it to ramp. With that, I knew what 3 drop I could exchange.
As for Everflowing Chalice, it's another colorless source but it makes me play stupidly. I might hold back to play it as a bigger rock when its purpose is supposed to just be a rock I need. With that in mind and the occasional color screw the deck encounters early game, Coldsteel Heart prevents that. There have been plenty of times when I was just one color short of the deck going along swimmingly and so that should fix it.
Lastly, Temple of the False God has screwed me too much. I rather have a generic land than the possibility of getting screwed, the deck doesn't need to hit 6 mana on turn 5. That's nice but not worth risking board development, especially with such a slow deck. Tower of the Magistrate has been rediscovered by me, the amount of Equipment-based decks that wreck me is fairly high. This way I strip my opponent's ridiculous protection and I do so at a very low opportunity cost.
I realized that Whip of Erebos is better than Angelic Chorus. I got blinded by the Activated Ability instead of realizing that I can recoup more life and then get some gravy. Dipped too low and then dying to some AoE is a frequent Daxos problem. Whip gives my Daxosmen the ability to push myself back to a safe number and turns on Ayli, Eternal Pilgrim. Chorus would gain me life once per Daxosman, wouldn't scale as they kept improving with Experience and is a little costly to play out. In comparison, Whip is lower CMC, continually gives me value if the Daxosman are made before or after it lands, gives black Pips for Gray Merchant of Asphodel and then has an Activated Ability I can use to get a Creature back. I doubt it, but it's another way to stave off paying Daxos' Commander tax. Let him hit the yard, whip him out, play an Enchantment, maybe make a Daxosman and then him go to the Command Zone. Seems better than just letting him go straight there without added value. Overall, with Whip being so good and Chorus being so expensive dollar-wise, I feel a little stupid for buying Chorus - especially since Whip become a mainstay in so many of my other decks.
Grasp of Fate is just a straight upgrade over Banishing Light, including increased pips for Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx.
I realized a key component to success with Control is giving more options and hence two utility lands. I can have the Thespian's Stage become a Cabal Coffers #2 or another best land on the board. Another case of me feeling foolish for not adding more utility to my deck. While Daxos has some recursion, it is probably less than some decks in the format and Scavenging Grounds lets me punish them. What's grade is I now have Thespian Stage to copy the Grounds if I need to double Exile a problem Graveyard. Two basics get cut, one of each. I feel I am closing in on my limit of what I could realistically cut for Basics.
The musings on Rumpy's primer made me also realize I've been having an artifact mana base problem. Too many of my Artifacts get blown up which slows me down in the mid-game, so I am also going to follow his build and try to find ways to play more actual lands. I've been also been screwed by an early Cabal Coffers a few times, which reminds me of the advice that I read somewhere that essentially Coffers shouldn't be considered a land.
I cut both mana rocks that ETBT and provide their particular color and added Land Tax to help me thin the deck and fetch lose lands which are mostly immune to board wipes. Swamp was added because the deck feels Black light at times despite the White bias.
I like the Heart because it gets me the color I need, which is pretty much what Bauble does except it doesn't get blown up from random Wraths. Fetching a Swamp also turns on the Tainted Field, powers Cabal Coffers and can be abused by a Sun Titan.
I want more draw in the deck but it feels really tight. There are a few Enchantments that I'm considering, but I've decided to go back to a known factor with Graveborn Muse. I really like Read the Bones' ability to see up to 4 cards, but I rather keep the low cost of Night's Whisper which resulted in it being picked for the Muse's replacement.
Kor Haven is just great for more of a protection suite.
I realize a lot of the time I'm left alone because if you're not used to Daxos, it mostly looks like he's derping around doing nothing. Journeyer's Kite adds to that. It makes sure I hit every land drop and it thins my deck. I realized the power of this with Thaumatic Compass, so I'd like something that can keep providing card advantage instead of turning into a Maze of Ith.
Considering how big my Daxosmen get, I think they would make good fodder for Miren to keep me alive.
Oath buys us goodwill, which is great for Daxos, as the more mana he has the more he can do. It also helps with the amount of times you're going to cast and recast this derp. A signet gets the axe.
I've always wanted to make a deck that abuses Emeria Shepherd but couldn't find one that would have that work with. I realized since this is listed in my more casual of tiers, I could play with more inefficiencies. Night's Whisper goes in favour of an amazing value engine.
Hmm, interesting call on Oath of Lieges. Do report back once you get some data, does this help others a bit too much? Do you end up with the most lands quick enough and then this starts being a liability?
With my experience with Oath of Lieges in my Progenitus deck is that it causes mana to become a rubber band effect. A lot of the time you'll be grabbing a basic and then making a land drop, which means that someone else will be able to Oath and drop a Land which works perfectly for me to Oath when my turn starts.
Oath negates the power of ramp decks and buys the goodwill of the table, which leaves Daxos alone and that's perfect for you to quietly tick up your Experience until the end game.
I'll see if the same occurs in Daxos vs Progenitus, but I'm pretty confident. It's also been added as a way to thin my deck, accelerate myself and synergizes with Emeria Shepherd.
On paper that sounds quite promising and I'm sure it's a fantastic include for you (not a diss here, we've been known to get drastically different playtest results for cards because reasons), I'll ask my favourite playgroup to trial it on Sunday. Come to think of it, I'll try Marchesa's Decree again as well, maybe my previous observation was a fluke. However, on the whole, I've noticed the performance of the deck getting better when it dropped cuteness and looking around at others and just started doing its thing.
I think that's because we're operating at different tiers. I am playing this as a much more Casual build, while your build is more Competitive. Sure, it isn't going to win on Turn 2 after some Flash Hulk or Storm shenanigans, but you probably go to Daxos when you want to play seriously. I go to my Daxos when I want to have a casual game.
I really like Spirit Bonds, I never knew about this Enchantment as it came out when I wasn't playing. It's low cost, so Daxos likes it for Experience but then provides ways to protect him. It's a pretty ingenious addition. The problem I'm having with Daxos right now is that the deck feels super tight, I have no clue on what to cut.
Remove Enchantments looks like an interesting addition, a way to save my Enchantments from a deep clean Wrath but again, no clue on what to cut for it.
Scroll Rack is definitely an interest of mine but it's pretty costly. I got my Land Tax for Italian MP, so it was affordable. Rack is pretty costly, though it is quite amazing with Land Tax.
The others I'm not that interested in including, I don't want to raise the ire of my opponents. I want to be left alone, keep up the appearance of just derping about and then surprise people in the late game when I'm suddenly pooping out 8/8s at Instant Speed.
I like Grim Guardian as an inoffensive way to slowly kill the table. Realistically, he'll never get the job done and while I do like that he's a body, I rather have Spirit Bonds as a way to protect Daxos. It'll also be nice with every other Creature I have, especially if I setup some Wrath with Emeria Shepherd or Sun Titan.
The problem is that Shadows isn't Scry 10 but Scry 1 ten times. Scry 10 in your example would be great, as that's tons of cards you can manipulate. It's something I've experienced with The Scarab God in my Sidisi, Brood Tyrant deck. However, Scry 1 ten times is nearly not as good.
I will say this, your suggestion for Spirit Bonds has been outstanding. It's a sac outlet, so I can abuse Dictate of Erebos and it protects my board from all sorts of Wraths.
Scoured Barrens was put in to smooth my mana over and give me a little life bump. With the amount of land search I've added to this deck, the mana fixing isn't necessary. I rather have a land that doesn't ETBT. High Market comes in as a way to spend mana to gain life, but its primary purpose is to sacrifice Daxos in case someone tries to Control Magic him. I don't mind any other effects but if you steal Daxos I am in trouble. This is a way to have him killed on demand so I can recast him at a later time.
I figure that making myself unassailable is worth more than killing some Creature, hence cutting Seal of Doom for Island Sanctuary. I also thought of other protection I'd want, as there's a lot of Voltron running around lately, so I rather lose 2 life than gain Commander damage. Now this might be a flawed observation, but I rarely saw Karmic Justice actually do anything. Perhaps it protected my stuff much more than I know; however, my Enchantments didn't get focused more when I haven't played Justice. We'll see if I'll miss Justice.
The deck that made me put in Tower has been disassembled, so I don't have to fear a jumbo Commander that was yielding all the Swords. I also couldn't think of a specific time when I used Cascading Cataracts. With both of these providing colorless, I cut them for two Basics but not due to mana issues. Between Land Tax and Sword of the Animist, I found that was running out of cards to fetch. The increased Plains also helps the Emeria Shepherd, though I don't mind a non-Plains due to giving another opportunity to cast an Enchantment again.
meanwhile i did a lot of testing with my daxos. Its really nice to see people beeing afraid of fetching my daxos-deck
It also ends in long-taking games. I had a big issue concerning life gain. But i fixed this problem with only two artifacts which provide me with a ton of life: Ivory Tower, Venser's Journal. Hiding behind the pillowfort lets me build up massive of life or safes me, when i have not enough pillowfort on the table. My games usually ends with >100 life.
Island Sanctuary helps really a lot, especially against green and red aggro- or token-decks. With so many card-draw the sideeffect of Island sanctuary doesnt matter.
In the moment i have i am planning to include Humility, just because the meta-game is going stronger and more and more "********-cards" are included. So "Humility" is my answer on all these ********-cards.
I will also include Words of Worship, because my playgroup often plays carddraw-pain. Because our daxos-decks are carddraw-heavy, i could turn carddraw into-life gain in terms of emergency. Usually carddraw-pain-decks are played together with discard, the Ivory Tower and Vensers Journal do not help to compensate the loss of life.
I threw an eye on the new tutor of Rivals of Ixalan: Mastermind's Acquisition because its pure upgrade to Diabolic Tutor. Slaughter the Strong is still in testing-mode. But i think its an early-rescue and you can ignite it, while having daxos out.
For additional lifegain i added Ashes of the Abhorrent only for the 1 life per creature-death. Its not to unfair comparing with Rest in Peace which locks out all graveyard-recurring decks instantly.
As you see, i added a lot of lifegain. The reason is simple: most of my opponents have creatures on the table early in the game and try to attack someone defenseless to not loose creatures in combat. So the lifegain is something like pillowfort for me.
Perhaps i build a sideboard to switch my deck to discard-heavy to play more seriously.
My lifegain isn't a problem to date, I got a bunch of ways to fetch life gain cards and then feed my Daxosmen to them. I don't run Humility because it causes games to grind to a halt and I try not to use cards that don't let people play unless I'm playing at a higher level.
I'm surprised you're adding Words of Worship, I'm personally looking for more draw over life gain.
Mastermind's Acquisition isn't an ungrade to Diabolic Tutor because you are not able to search for cards outside of the game, as per the basic EDH rules.
I think I had Sacred Mesa in my deck at one point but I cut it because Daxosmen close out games faster. Ditto for Sigil, as I don't cast too many Enchantments.
I don't play with sideboards but if your group allows it, that's way better for you.
I've made some changes to the deck because there are too many Zetalpa, Primal Dawn running around in my meta, including someone making that his Commander. While most people laugh at Mono White, once that Dino resolves it becomes a question of how do you handle it? And if you do it once, can you do it again?
Dust Bowl is to help me with various problem lands, such as if someone has a Strip Mine pointed at my Cabal Coffers et al. It also helps reduce my land count so I get value from Oath of Lieges (which has been fantstic) and Weathered Wayfarer.
Slaughter the Strong and Tragic Arrogance are just ways to deal with the sudden increase of Indestructible Creatures. Rout and Hour got the axe as the closes analogs.
Interesting, why are there so many Zetalpas around? What decks ram it into the 99? As far as maindeck eight drop impact goes, it really feels like this doesn't do a lot.
It's a buck and there's a lot of Gishath, Sun's Avatar running around. Hell, I'm thinking of adding it to a variety of decks as a finisher because as a Flying Double Strike Trampler, it's a giant problem to contain and then the Vigilance makes it hard to punch through. The addition of Indestructible on top of that is just a huge kick in the ass; as you can handle it once, maybe, but if it comes back as a Commander or through Resurrection, you're in trouble.
On top of that, I do think that this deck is also playing at a lower Tier of play than you. I even moved Daxos out of the Casual to 'average'. While this is an 'average' deck, it is less powerful than your build which is more competitive with its Stax package. The cat is out of the bag with Daxos, he's being targeted far more often as people took notice that my Daxos always seemed to 'win out of nowhere'. I'm going to have to add even more protection so I don't die which is also why I'm comfortable adding Dust Bowl to the deck.
