After much time I found myself not enjoying my Whelming Wave Deck, using Jalira, Master Polymorphist to cheap out the huge sea creatures of the deep. Some time has passed and I felt the deck growing old and expected, I have always wanted to dabble with a wizard tribal. Most Azami decks I have came across are running expensive cards and I felt like just a plain budgetted tribal could/will be fun. Of course I will take suggestions and opinions are always welcome.
After playing this deck I have fell in love with it, I love the ability to be able to dig for answers. I ordered and got Laboratory Maniac pretty much after the first game, I found my win con of taking all the creatures with Willbreaker to be to dependent on my opponents playing creatures that can actually finish the game. I wanted another win con and it definitely has been a welcome addition as it has been the way I have won the games that I have.
With that in mind I am in love with the card draw that happens with this deck, and I decided to put alittle more thought into the deck. I added some no max hand size other than Reliquary Tower with Venser's Journal and Thought Vessel. I thought another win con based on card draw would be good also with Psychosis Crawler and then I thought since I will probably be playing this deck more lets get some PW in with Teferi, Temporal Archmage using primarily his first two abilities and Jace, Architect of Thought as a all around good PW for the deck.
Of Course I would absolutely love suggestions to take this deck to the next level. Please any opinion would be great.
Next level but still budget like us? Foil is a budget Force of Will, Daze is sweet, and cheap counters like Swan Song, Annul, Spell Pierce, Envelop. I like Forbid as well, as do many Azami lists, since its a cancel with buyback of pitching 2 cards (in Azami easy). Dig Through Time, its 1-2 bucks and is basically a pseudo demonic tutor as it digs 7 deep an instant speed to find any 2 cards you desire. Cheap filtering like Impulse, Ponder, Preordain, Brainstorm. Long-Term Plans is a budget type tutor, as it gets any card at instant speed and you put it 3rd from the top of your library. Information Dealer is innocuous as he allows you to rearrange the top x cards of your library, where x is equal to the amount of wizards you control. Of course there is Soothsaying, a similar effect but on a 1 drop enchantment. Part the Waterveil for a dollar extra turn effect (because you can't recycle it). You know about Vensers Journal, with Azami it's gross lol. I recommend Evacuation/Aetherize and potentially the new mass blue bounce instant as anti aggro protection. Reins of Power is a great little gem thats messes combat up. Steel Hellkite is a nice little duder that is a great removal option and can be tutored up via fabricate or treasure mage. Vedalken Mastermind is a wonderful 2 drop wizzo that saves your permanents from removal for 1 blue mana and a tap at instant speed, so he is basically a better temporal adept, since he is cheaper cmc and cheaper activation cost. If you can ever spring for him, get a Terferi, Mage of Zhalfir, because when other blue decks come to town they sure will be sad when you flash him in and watch the tears roll. Meekstone is wonderful anti aggro tool and can be tutored up by Trinket Mage, who can also fetch seat of the synod, tormods crypt, relic of progenitus, pithing needle if need be and your meta calls for it. Telepathy is awesome by the way, nothing like seeing must counters and who has what lol, I SO love that card. You can also try Precognition as it is an enchantment that allows you to fateseal an adversary per turn which is mega fun. Try and keep the high cmc countespells to a minimum it will help. Rewind might be the only exception or cryptic command, of Dismiss as a cryptic budget option. SIGIL TRACER, he is cheap and because forking spells is gross fun.
If I can pull it Teferi will definitely make the list, As I am loving this deck so much I am starting to accept the fact that I want to put more money into the deck. But I do not want to lose the card draw feel. I also enjoy Long-Term Plans, Foil and Forbid. Telepathy is impressive and kind of sad I didnt know about it before
Thank you again, any other suggestions would be great
I would keep all the mass bounce spells as instants. Cyclonic Rift/Evacuation/Aetherize because instant speed won't leave you vulnerable. Riptide Laboratory is sick, as it allows you to save a wizard OR if it has an ETB to re-use it. When you have wizards like Vendillion Clique/Snapcaster mage/Archeomancer/Venser Shaper Savant, this land becomes utterly ridiculous. IF your meta has land destruction, I find Orboro Breezecaller wonderful as she allows you to save lands versus wastelands, strip mines etc. Some Azami lists focus on many mana rocks like Extrplanar lens/caged sun/gauntlet of power. They are good cards but just be wary as they are highly risk/reward cards. Personally I keep mana rocks low or doublers because of hyper efficient removal, that and the these doublers are high cmc and leave you vulnerable. I think out of all the wizards, Glen Elendra Archmage, Teferi and Venser Shaper Savant are must haves in competitive metas. Second to them would be SCmage.
Extra turn effects are good but I don't recommend a zillion of them. Time Warp/Beacon of Tomorrows is fine. I know if you're running mad doublers then sure jam 5-6 warp effects. BUT be warned most of the time they are just draw a card, drop a land. Just be wary.
Lastly, the combos. Palinchron/High tide OR Palinchron/Phantasmal Image are infinite mana. With said infinite mana you can cast Capsize with buyback and boomerang the entire enemy boardstates. Infinite mana and Blue Sun's Zenith/Stroke of Genius. Also, infinite mana and Memnarch to turn all permanents into artifacts and take possession of all of them. Lastly, Psychosis Crawler and Mind Over Matter plus Azami OR Azami plus Mind Over Matter draw your deck play Laboratory Maniac, continue to draw via combo, win.
Budget options for Palinchron are Deadeye Navigator plus Perengrine Drake, also makes infinite mana.
Silent Arbiter/crawlspace are other options for anti aggro. Personally I prefer Meekstone tutored up by Trinket Mage.
Keep wizards as low cost as possible, with the exception of specific powerhouses.
Another potential is Stasis with a bounce enabler like Vedalken Mastermind/Temporal Adept/Surgespanner can be a hardlock. Also, their is Knowledge Pool plus Teferi Mage of Zhalfir for a hardlock on spells except flashback (just make sure the board is empty beforehand because once the lock is out you cant deal with boardstate). Slops for fun combos like Archeomancer/Cyclonic Rift because, you know, might as well give the finger to the whole playgroup lol.
Azami, more than any other deck I have played with maybe the exception of Brago is very much about MOMENTUM. By that I mean, if you pull ahead with even a few wizards and land Azami and she sticks for even 2 turns the advantage is so overwhelming its almost impossible to lose. For this reason, play judiciously as not to make yourself the prime target. Players know what Azami is about, and if you become too powerful too quickly, you'll be the archenemy lol.
Wow alot of great suggestions again, Maybe when I get another bonus from work I can justify some spending on them. It is a great group of cards that I can agree 100% would make my deck better. Thanks alot
Good to see another azami player!
I've found with my list is that I tried to make my existing wizards as flexible as possible so they can do various things depending on the circs... What do I mean? Well various wizards have activated and triggered abilities... And they can draw cards with azami, but what about being able to counter spells as well? That's why I recommend you get
Patron wizard!!!
Tapping your wizards to counter spells! Yes please!
Add with this the ability to tap your wizards multi times in a round and things get bonkers! Which is why I also recommend
Intruder alarm
Your enemies will be afraid to play both creatures and spells! And with suitable timing on your turn you can draw 10's of cards!!!
Enjoy!
