I think Eldritch should be sweet, is survival still in yours or did it make the cut? I'm testing this weekend, I could see it being an either or thing, especially since Ghave, Sun Titan or the toad can grab us Elesh. She's also the anthem aspect I was looking for. I love winning the painfully slow game with a few 1/1s, but I play some pretty resilient decks now so letting them get in the damage faster is good before anyone manages to stabilize. There's a RG landfall deck that can come back pretty fast from Mass board wipes.
I'm not really sure yet. I've only just been reducing lands for dorks to try and accelerate the deck. I've been coming up with a higher rate of low mana producing as I've been running dummy games. The 32 mana producing lands might be too low for my liking. I'll probably add one more land to keep at the 1:3 land ratio. Particularly a green source.
How about adding a metric ton of dorks?
Deathrite, llanowar, mystic, fyndhorn all come to mind
Mana crypt also is obviously awesome.
I'm probably going to drop Fetid Heath for a green source as well to increase the reliability of dropping one of the green mana dorks.
I ended up dropping Dust Bowl a while ago for a color producer. I found that if I was going to use the 3 mana for something, I'd rather use it on casting something rather than spending it on trading lands. Really the only time I would use it was when I was sputtering with the deck and without a draw engine.
Horizon Canopy has filled a great spot in being the target for Flagstones, since the land comes in tapped anyways, saving the other duels for the fetches.
Agree with cutting the filter lands. Turn one colored mana is super important. Did you mean canopy vista for the flagstones land? Horizon doesn't seem quite right.
I also want to cut some colorless lands but adore the options in the deck so far. Can't picture cutting dust bowl, tabernacle, strip mine, drownyard

I'm currently testing Survival over Bitterblossom in the deck. It's pretty good but only gotten it out once so far in a game I was gonna win anyway.
Right now I want to test Eldritch or Parallax wave over Aura of silence, because Aura shards is just awesome and better.

Yeah, Canopy Vista. That's what I get for trying to type on my phone on the train.
The Filter lands have done very well for me. Sure they could be Dual Lands, but money. But they've been very good at providing the needed colors for the heavy color costing spells.
As to the mana dork idea, I would be a bit wary on reducing any further. Only 32 produce mana, and 2 of those can't produce on turn 1. I'd love to get my hands on a Crypt, but again - money.

I think the pain lands are a better option than filters or checks solely because you can play those colored spells turn one.
Playing a Brushland into elves of deep shadow or llanowar wastes into avacyn's pilgrim is excellent and shouldn't be overlooked. With fetches/duals this happens far more often and we can often play any colors the following turn.

I don't disagree with you on that, I'd rather be using Duels instead of the checklands. But I'll eventually acquire those in time, for now I'm making due. On my list I've been play-testing the Cradle and BG Fetch as I don't own them yet, And I'll probably add Crypt to that list too. After those, it will be the grind to win the trade value for the original Duels.
The 2 green filters I'll probably keep. Those have made for some very clutch moments to cast spells with 2 colored symbols for me, and for getting Necropotance out early.

The problem with running those lands is they need to tap for the mana. The only way Parallax Wave can blink lands is if Living Plane is out, and the lands don't have haste.
Oh yeah thats very true. Never mind those other cards. Don't think I can make room for vestige anyway with the land situation I have
Parallax Wave, Living Plane, and an Opalescence effect gives infinite mana from lands without needing a haste effect.
1. Use Wave to exile a land.
2. Use Wave to exile itself. Wave and the land return to play. (land is untapped)
3. Use Wave to exile Living Plane.
4. Tap land for mana.
5. Use Wave to exile itself. Wave and Plane return to play.
repeat as desired. (Let each exile activation resolve between steps, of course--the "hold priority" exiles are for problem permanents.)
If using Starfield to provide the Opalescence effect, then you need 6 total enchantments. In step 5 Living Plane is exiled, and Wave must still be a creature in order to target itself and continue the loop.
Thats awesome
Thanks for that.
Throw in a grave pact and you now have opponents with no lands or creatures.
Aura shards handles the rest real well.

So I've been thinking a ton about E Evolution before I order (All those masterpiece artifacts have made me such a penny pincher) and I've been thinking of lines of play we might run into early. Dorks can turn into Bloomtender, which is kind of cool, but it seems unlikely to ever get the enchantress or Aven Mindcensor that early...it seems great in comp with fetches but working off a t1 dork seems better. If we have the enchantress, she's a great trade for Mindslicer or Rector, Bloomtender could be worth the trade. This is where I figure Animate Dead may prove worth a slot, the Sun Titan interactions are really powerful even outside of Gravestorm combo, and could let us reliably re use the rector. It sounds slow, but I want to really test it because I've had enough games of having the time to abuse Sun Titan. Plus, it also lets us grab titan, which can bring back great things like Necropotence or Aura Shards. Elesh Norn is also great for just needing to be reanimated rather than sticking around like over in Tasigur.
This has just been my line of thought recently, but I havent gotten in many games lately. School's really busy and the friends I can play with are all very casual. Unrelated but worth mentioning Queen Marchesa 75% good stuff has been the most fun I've had with a non competetive deck. The monarch aspect makes the game so interesting and replaces the mana rock you played to get it out t3, so the 2 cmc mana rock into a 4 leader idea is so healthy here. the Queen,Odric, Lunarch Marshal, and Leigon Loyalist + a small board is probably the coolest thing I've ever turned Sideways. If you ever need to build some kind of casual deck where you have a reputation for being a competitive player, it really makes for some amazing games. PS when you dont have to worry about fast mana, counterspells, and green hard ramp Mardu colors may be the most fun to play. Playing it made me realize how linear U and G have become for me in commander.
To stay on topic, this thread is fascinating, I think I will start building the deck from the budget list? Which cards do you think are must have from budget/non budget in order to start building?

I figure that evolution will be relevant at 2 cmc or higher since rector is often the first thing we go for.
I'm looking into evolution, chord, and birthing pod as more potential options. I think pod may actually be better since once it lands we get uncounterable rector and a turn later win. Chord being an instant speed Mindslicer, rector, titania, sun titan, sylvan sakfeeper/saffi if we go that route seems good too. All 3 seem super solid and I wanna try them out. Recruiter of the guard is probably not needed then.
Thoughts on safeskeeper and saffi in here? Not sure if they're needed but the options seem sweet, especially with sun titan/titania antics. However Parallax wave is decent there too and much more tutorable. However again if adding pod and evolution saffi may be better and more abuse able. Decisions....

Things you need for sure is living plane. Nature's revolt is ok but the doomwake combo is a little worse without it.
Academy rector is the best card in the deck.
Elesh norn and Linvala both combo well but you could probably go with one.
Without the land package you probably don't need crop rotation or knight of the reliquary.

Here's the list. It isn't stax, but then again it's meant for metas leagues under what this list plays at. It's just fun because it has a lot of interactions and plays every kind of card. This leaves a lot of space to cut what you need to and add what you like. It isn't even really built to win as much as it is a kind of good stuff in the sense we're trying to maximize what we can do aand win with something powerful and unique.
Actually got off the parallax wave combo with living plane, starfield, and edalon to draw my deck with infinite mana for the win.
With that said I think it's a bit too cute to be worthwhile. I was gonna win that game easily anyway and without starfield I don't care for it. Not sure how it's super great without starfield + living plane + etc
Also starfield plus Pattern is usually a bit better.
Also I'm thinking about cutting Abrupt decay. It's great in Tasigur because a lot of 3 cmc > cards are relevant to kill but I don't think that holds true here. I'll put it back on sideboard for sure and see if I miss it or not but am thinking that's the cut for now.
Looking for cuts for Chord of calling and birthing pod. Sad to say it but think cataclsym is next to go. Really don't want to cut it as it's one of my favorite things to cast but ravages and geddon are just so much better. May be insane here though
Anyway:
Current sideboard:
Misty/Mesa/Catacombs/Flats
Imperial seal
Horizon canopy
Chord of calling
Saffi Eriksdotter
Sylvan safekeeper
Birthing pod
Abrupt decay
Edit edit:
Super excited to see what we get this year in commander options.
Adding blue or red would be cool if one of the 6 allows more enchantress antics.
Red gives Mana echoes, xengos, blood moon, wildfire, etc
Blue gives land equilbrium, sunder, rhystic study, copy enchantment, omniscience, counters.

Now that it's been said out loud, the cut for Cata could make sense, or at least meta wise. With Zur and and Narset as two of the biggest hitters I face, it certainly has become a window card instead of a go to. As for Birthing Pod, I think our numbers may need to align more? What plays do you have in mind besides Rector into Giant...I've just found the card to be good, but doesn't do what I want it to when I truly need it to. I'm certainly willing to test it, these new green spells coming in are what I wanted from my good green deck.
I'm also super stoked for the 4 color generals. A part of me is torn by the fact that if they're good enough, I'd probably be running 2-3 as my main decks. Pending on what's the focus of each (I'm really hoping they just do a broad sweep and make each use a specific card type) A ghave like creature seems likely in WBRG since that nephalim spewed tokens. I feel like enchantress might go to Witch-maw based on logic, but who knows. We're almost into October so hopefully spoilers start soon and they just give us commanders first. If it's anything like last year at the very least one of us will be pulling out a new deck.
I'm thinking chord of calling would be better than pod for now. Pod however allows us to cheat in rector/doomwake without the worry of counters.
Turning dorks into enchantress/bloom tender isn't terrible but underwhelming. Ghave into Sun titan would be ok and sun titan into elesh norn would be good but you're right I don't think it sticks.

So Eldritch Evolution and Birthing pod are no good in here. Getting Chord of calling as the next test to see how that goes.
Without good chains the cards aren't worth it.
Also considering Thalia, heretic cathar as another potential good creature in here to screw with lands

Yeah, I didn't think they'd make it. Chord makes sense tho, I think more tutoring is always good...right?
Thalia has been awesome in Marchesa, the creatures entering tapped actually hits a lot of problem creatures as well. Hasty Narset doesn't mean much. I've noticed leaders like that have to grab the haste or it'll get removed. Sure they remove Thalia, but hopefully their resources have dwindled where even Swords to Plowshares prevents them from casting leader the same turn.

Yeah having more tutors is always beneficial, just not when you need to chain them in a deck that has 1 chain.

I need to look it up, but I think there's some form of Gravestorm combo with Saffi, Animate Dead, and Sun Titan. I def have space for protection like Safi and Bitter Ordeal is never a bad idea. It's prob a meta choice, but I don't mind having that outlet if I need it. I wanted to test a reanimation spell we can grab back with Starfield anyways. Finding a way to grab back Sun Titan kind of pulls us out of w/e awful situation we can put ourselves in, which is real good- I think that line of play makes the idea of just wiping lands with no board presence but Starfield.
I think you need loyal retainers for the infinte gravestrom. Bypass sun titan and animate dead entirely.
Also I don't think we need animate dead. With eternal witness we can get any card from the yard out rather than just a few creature finishers we have.

Also starfield plus Pattern is usually a bit better.
Yeah, the big combo is generally something that isn't really a tutor target, just something that is a pleasant "I've drawn Parallax Wave and can do this combo".
But outside the combo, Parallax Wave has done very well for me in temporarily removing opponent threats or mana rocks/dorks, and occasionally protected my important creatures from removal. Not really an all-star in the deck, but it definitely puts in work. And I do like being able to use it, let it go to the graveyard, and then later bring it back with Starfield to use it to wipe creatures (especially in my creature heavy meta)
Managed to pick up a Gaea's Cradle. Yeah, I didn't realize how much I needed that until playing against a Grand Arbiter Stax deck of my own creation and having him play Static Orb and Pendrell Mists, after I had dropped Living Plane. In a 5 player game. Much laughs and misery were had.
I've been managing to get more games now that classes have started up again. One thing that I've definitely noticed is Rest In Peace's ability to neuter the deck somewhat. My meta's been tutoring for it more and more as a way of shutting off the early abuse of Pattern, Rector, and Starfield. I'm debating swapping out something like From Beyond or Freyalise for more removal, probably Nature's Claim, but the mana producing chump-blockers have done very well for me in my groups.
I don't think Cataclysm should be dropped, as it's both an offensive wipe and a defensive wipe, and I've had it perform both roles very well for me in this deck, and my competitive Zur deck. Particularly as a tutor target to stop me from losing the game the next turn. Yeah it whiffs hard vs decks like Zur and Narsett, but being able to wipe a board state and generally removes the ability for opponents to recover quickly from it.
I'd just shift to a different early assault, this deck isn't graveyard dependent. That's actually another reason I like at least testing without cata...it can't get rid of problem permanents in the way that the worst things are kept around. I don't have a reputable amounts of games logged, but Cata is the only wipe that's wiffed. It's usually one sided on the enchantment aspect too...for some players they just keep the Sylvan Library or suddenly have Rhystic Study be worthwhile again. It's unfortunate I just ordered the Vault foil, but I suppose it's an easy card to find a home for...because I honestly just sold myself on the cut.

This leaves a lot of space to cut what you need to and add what you like. It isn't even really built to win as much as it is a kind of good stuff in the sense we're trying to maximize what we can do aand win with something powerful and unique.

Edit:
Changes for now
Forest -> Fyndhorn elves
Abrupt decay ->Elvish mystic
Aura of silence -> Eldritch evolution
I'm sure there is way more as well I'm missing

Turning dorks into enchantress/bloom tender isn't terrible but underwhelming. Ghave into Sun titan would be ok and sun titan into elesh norn would be good but you're right I don't think it sticks.

Without good chains the cards aren't worth it.
Also considering Thalia, heretic cathar as another potential good creature in here to screw with lands

I'll add chord over evolution for now and hopefully find a spot to test out Thalia, safekeeper, and saffi soon

Also I don't think we need animate dead. With eternal witness we can get any card from the yard out rather than just a few creature finishers we have.
