After thinking about it for a while I decided to scrap my Daretti deck for now. My issue offhand is that it doesn't feel like there is as much deckbuilding freedom as I had originally thought I would have with it. There are variations in builds for sure but it still feels like there are just a lot of core cards to the deck to the point where it feels like there isn't a lot of room for personal choices.
I like Daretti as a commander but at the end of the day I consider myself to be a deckbuilder and a deck where I see no room for changes gets old to me so I am moving on. Best of luck guys.
Sorry to hear, have you tried the MLD stax version posted a few pages back by Prid3? It's a bit pricier, but may be worth checking out. But other than that I sort of agree with you. Until they print new fun artifacts, red draw spells, etc, the core of this deck is solid. It's those 5 or so flex slots that matter.

Rollback Post to RevisionRollBack
Hi I'm Infecter4life and ironically I only play GBx decks.
Played some games yesterday. Of note, one game I was at five life, facing down a Price of Knowledge and a full grip. I welded a Nexus away to bring back Wurmcoil, copy with Mirrorworks, and thanks to Hammer, had haste and swung to gain some life. Next turn, gain more life. Went on to ultimate ugin, then Daretti, and Mindslaver lock the other player out of the game.
Sad to see that this thread seems to have slowed down quite a bit.
I don't know about everybody else, but this deck is still crushing in my play group. My list here has undergone several changes to power it down on purpose because it is so strong and consistent. I really enjoy playing Daretti because the deck has a very strong core which can be built around in a multitude of ways. Additionally, between the utter lack of mana issues and the straight-forward, powerful game plan, I find this deck is a great one to lend out to new/occasional players.
Daretti is definitely a strong deck. He does so many dirty things that even sometimes I disgust myself. Unfortunately, because of that, I'm usually targeted as public enemy #1 in multiplayer.
1v1, however, is a whole other story. Just the other day, I got out like a turn 3 or 4 Ugin and just completely dominated.
The best (and worst) thing about the early Ugin is that you usually get to shuffle up again for another game shortly thereafter. This deck is definitely not for people who want to lay low and try to hide. The synergy is so strong you will accidentally wreck people or just pump out so much value so fast that any decent player will recognize the threat immediately.
Sad to see that this thread seems to have slowed down quite a bit.
This is mostly due to me being gone on business lately, which makes it hard to play test and post reports lol...
But for the most part, there really hasn't been any cards released lately for this deck. The inclusion of Mana Crypt made the deck be nuts and more hated lately lol...
Since your deck's description is not having the mother of all douchy Daretti decks, what is your take on cards like Joven and Chandler? Since you run Mycosynth Lattice, these Homelands legends can basically snipe anything on the board. Granted, Homelands is considered one of the worst sets of all time, however it is often overlooked.
My YouTube Channel: The Commander Tavern - a channel I just started where I'll post deck techs and gameplays. Please support by checking it out. Maybe you'll like its content and subscribe! Thanks!
It's slowing down a bit because Daretti has been explored now, and the C14 decks are almost 5 months old. Not much to discuss now except upcoming cards or some new niche build!
It all depends on your budget to be honest. Buy the deck for starters, get the cheaper stuff you can add first to make it better, and then start adding in the higher stuff if needed. I wouldn't say it's necessary to spend hundreds of dollars, but it does help make it better and faster.
So, what would you suggest if someone was interested in building Daretti, but didn't have hundreds of dollars to spend on cardboard?
My first suggestion would be to go after the cheap 2 CMC artifact ramp cards - Mana Vault, Mana Crypt, Mox Opal, and Grim Monolith are the high dollar cards that are excellent at accelerating the deck, but where a lot of the money goes.
The next thing to look at is what are you trying to do - win via artifact creatures or combo/control? The artifact creature route is cheaper by far - there are many Modular creatures that are not expensive (Arcbound Ravager being the only exception to that)
My personal essessment of Daretti is that to be casual and have a fun deck, this deck is very cheap to do and you will enjoy it immensly. Kicking the deck up to a competitive level takes a pretty big chunk of change though...

I think you explained it much better than I did. And that's why you have the Primer. Lol.
I play with a weekly semi-competitive group. I've found a nice little tech package of Red Elemental Blast, Pyroblast and Recoup very handy. I can't count the number of times I've surprised people with a counter to their counterspell and if I'm not playing against a blue deck they're great discarding fodder. On a side note I've also found them to be a a nice surprise in five colour decks. Recoup's target is normally just for Scrap Mastery. Either it has been discarded because of my Wheel of Fortune or Reforge the Soul, my opponents have made me discard it or I just want to cast it again.
I'd actually been considering Past in Flames and/or Recoup as value cards that can be discarded off Daretti's plus and also allow me to aggressively pitch removal to dig for threats and still get a shot at using it, or just getting a second chance at them, especially Scrap Mastery like you said in particular. I have a bit more emphasis on cheaper wipes for the early game alongside 2-drop rocks as a plan B when I don't open one so I can attempt to stymie opponent's early board presence since I mostly play 1-on-1 v. Omnath besides multiplayer games, so I figured they would mitigate Past in Flames' expensive flashback cost in tandem with needing to pay the cost to flashback yarded spells again. I don't have enough experience to know if it's worth it, but it sounds like a fun synergy with what a Red control deck wants to do in tandem with the emphasis on looting Daretti leans towards in the first place. But being a non-creature non-artifact, I feel like the bits of synergy the flashback cards do have with the deck might lose to the rest they don't interact well with.
Speaking of digging for threats, I feel like I need a few more. As far as creature-based ones, I currently play Steel Hellkite, Myr Battlesphere, Wurmcoil Engine, Soul of New Phyrexia, and Krenko (who I chose to play as a relatively low-cost threat I can curve into after Goblin Matron when I don't have the right combination of cards to play games with Welder). I'm looking mostly at Thopter Assembly and Precursor Golem right now (but any other good suggestions would be nice). I don't know if I can fit both in my list, so I'm wondering which might be better? I actually lean towards Precursor Golem since he gives me instant value and I feel like removal on him is mitigated with the nature of what the deck wants to do anyway with revival. But it seems like most people lean towards Thopter Assembly, and I do like how it interacts with Daretti, bouncing as a free card to be pitched again. It just feels like the payoff will be a little too slow, especially since I can't use it as a blocker if I want to get the value.
They didn't care that he was the savior of Fort Keff, the great hunter of Ondu, the champion of Kabira. To them, he was just another piece of flesh, a thing with life to be drained away.

I am definitely interested in making a slot for Past in Flames after my most recent game - I pulled off a T1 Daretti but still lost because all of my filtering net me nothing to protect him with and I had to filter away Scrap Mastery and Blasphemous Act in the process - both of which would've severely helped me later in the game... Recoup is in the same situation, but I feel like including only one of the two so I am going with the more "powerful" option.
On your question regarding threats, picking between the options you presented I agree that Precursor Golem should be included before Thopter Assembly simply because of the immediate impact he provides. The only clutch factor of TA is that it flies and can block incoming fliers, which are the easiest way to shut this deck down IMO.
I love your list, Vash. I have a fairly similar build. But due to some budget constraints, I don't have Mana Crypt, Metalworker and Mox Opal yet. I have yet to try to proxy them. What would you suggest swapping if you don't have those?
I very much agree too, that flyers are the bane of this deck, and Thopter Assembly is probably the only thing you can do, except if you run Pentavus (the tokens of course). And it's a bit troublesome at times that your Thopter count won't increase on turns.

Oh, Pentavus was also an option for threats, though with my experience playing him I found 7 was a little too high to hardcast, and needing the extra mana to generate tokens was taxing on top of that as opposed to, for example, Battlesphere. He overall didn't feel very impactful, but he's also another card I feel like should have a lot of synergy with what Daretti wants to do. I might try it again now that I play Contagion Engine to repeatedly minus Daretti, allowing me to more easily make use of Pentavus killing itself on top of proliferating his counters. Speaking of, has anyone tried playing Clasp? It can play as another sort of early game wipe on top of having more synergy everywhere else than the instants and sorceries do by being an artifact, and having a little more game late with the proliferate effect than them as well, but I don't know if it's strong enough for Commander. I was just super impressed with Contagion Engine, I feel like it might be worth looking deeper into that pool, and more cheap effects the better I think.

I kinda say this often, but the big thing about Daretti is getting him out early - so the best way is to obviously use the high $ mana rocks. For a suggestion to replace them, just look at all the 2 rocks like Coldsteel Heart, Prismatic Lens, and Helm of Awakening. You can also add Cloud Key and Semblance Anvil to just make your artifacts cheaper as well.
Blinkmoth Urn has been okay, I may actually cut it soon though - it is really good for late game and doesn't do much for early game. Clock of Omens and Static Orb have been in the deck for competitive matches, but for casual I don't run them.
The only other way to deal with flyers is to give all your creatures with flying, so Akroma's Memorial is an artifact that can see some serious value in this deck. My play testing has done wonders with this card, so I may end up permanently adding it soon lol
I know my buddy suggested Akroma's Memorial, it's interesting since it can make our dudes immune to our own damage-based wipes and Vigilance is really useful to protect Daretti. More than once I've had to make the hard to decision to swing or hold back once I've managed to stick a threat, especially with, for example Steel Hellkite who I've more than once considered removing just because he wants to attack and doesn't put up much of a defense..
To the people who play it (everyone?), how easy is it to turn on Mox Opal early on (turn 1-2?) I can see some really storng hands with the artifact lands and 1 drop rocks, 2 drop rock on turn 2 getting Opal online among other things (and those are already strong hands!), but it seems like the average is going to be around 3-4 (2 2 drop rocks, 2-drop rock and a creature for example). Is my deck composition off? should I play more 0 drop artifacts likeMishra's Bauble and Urza's Bauble to turn it on more often? Is it good enough that it doesn't matter whether or not I get it only immediately? It's a good chunk of change and I want to get one as the price comes down a bit from MM15, but I'd like to know other people's thoughts on it before I get one since I don't feel like I could consistently turn it on turn 1, or at least 2.
