TL;DR up front - GOD I FREAKING LOVE THIS BLOCK. Blue and artifact bring a LOT to the table. The Lands, Red, and Black, are kinda underwhelming.
Blue
Mechanized Production - An artifact goodstuff gem for us! It will be SO insanely valuable in this deck. The abuses are endless. Sad robot every turn? Self replicating artifact lands? Multiple blightsteel? Alternate win condition? Yum.
Baral's Expertise - I would like this SO much more if it was an instant, and let us cheat a card into play as an instant. As it is, its kinda limited in its uses and I don't intend to run it.
Quicksmith Spy - I will play test this one. It could be great to give artifact lands the ability to draw cards, or in a stax build we could intentionally tap our own static orb or winter orb. Great potential, but could be too pricey at 4cc for an ability that is lost upon removal.
Disallow - I dont run a heavy counter spell suite in this deck, but this is a great counterspell if you are looking to run them.
Efficient Construction - seems ok. I think i prefer thopter spy network as a token generator though, simply for the additional card draw, even though i will likely generate less overall tokens.
Trophy Mage - Will depend on your deck's curve, but amazing potential as a chump blocking tutor. Not sure I like it better than tranmute cards like Drift of phantasms, but if you need another tutor, she could be what you are looking for.
Red
Indomitable Creativity - this card seems interesting. you can use it on yourself as a last ditch effort, or nuke key cards of your opponents, but i hate the RRR start up cost, and the complete randomness of it. I can see instances where it would be of value, but i don't intend to test/run it.
Pia's Revolution - Ohhhhh yes. I like this one. Sure, most opponents will just take 3, but you get to TARGET who gets to decide. The politics this card offers are awesome, and I love forcing opponents to make decisions.
Black
Herald of Anguish - overly expensive in every manner. The recursive creature debuff / removal is really nice, but the discard is just going to paint a target on us and he doesn't really help our deck plan.
Yahenni's Expertise - Eat it, elves! Kinda a niche boardwipe vs go wide strategies, all in all, not a bad card, i love that it brings something of our own back, but all in all, im gonna probably pass on this one. If it was -4/-4 I would insta-buy it, but -3/-3 doesnt hit enough for me.
Sly Requisitioner - 5cc is simply too much for all the better this card is. If she was a 3cc, instant include. at 5 though? I can't run that in stax, which is where i want her.
Colorless
Planar Bridge - I am sure i will inevitably see it on an edh table somewhere, but at 14 mana for a tutor that only fetches permanents, i am not interested. I recognize that it goes into play, and thats sorta nice, but man, thats pricey. I think it will perform infinitely better in elfball style decks.
Gonti's Aether Heart - If it was reusable, I'd love this card. But it isn't, so I don't.
Paradox Engine - ALL ABOARD THE HYPE TRAIN!!! I am sleeving one of these up and abusing it for as long as i can.
Hope of Ghirapur - Oh how i wish it had haste. This has so much potential in a storm build, but outside of that, i am not sure if it has much value.
Walking Balista - It's a cool card, but i don't really want to include all the other combo pieces to make it viable.
Inspiring Statuary - Man, if this just wasn't nonartifact spells i would love it, but the fact that you cannot giive all artifacts you control improvise really makes this one unappealing to me.
Merchant's Dockhand - A real sleeper imo. 1/2 for 1 is already interesting, but for 4 mana and tapping our artifacts (hello winter orb and static orb) we get to look ahead and get a free card. I really like this guy and intend to pick him up.
Metallic Mimic - Could be good in a myr or thopter deck i guess. Not really my bag. Much prefer more global lords like master of etherium
Scrap Trawler - WOOOOO! RECURSION CITY! I love this little dude and i am stoked to sleeve him up. Where pia's revolution may be good, this guy is amazing
Implement of Examination - Potential, but i hate that it costs 3. If it was 2, i'd be sooooo excited.
Universal Solvent - Kinda nice I guess for using with trinket mage late game, but I prefer brittle effigy still i think, or spine of ish sah
Tezzeret's Touch - Protects an artifact sorta well. I think i'd rather run something that copies my artifact, or does something more than make it a blocker that comes back to hand.
Some sweeping changes before i go play this weekend:
Myr Retriever is getting cut from all my lists to make room for Scrap Trawler. I feel that even though myr retriever is cheaper and hits more targets, trawler will be a more potent ability overall.
Phyrexian Walker is getting cut from Mishra Storm for Paradox Engine to stabilize mana. This decklist is really tight, but i feel that if i can get paradox into play, it really makes going off easier and more consistent so i don't fizzle due to mana. Walker unfortunately doesn't bring anything to the deck other than being 0 cost and a body.
Finally, looking at my 75% main build, I am cutting Arcane Denial and Torpor Orb from this build to slot in Whir of Invention and Mechanized Production. Orb is more valuable in my stax build, and arcane denial, while nice to have for a quick draw 3, is really a cute card in the deck and not really important to my end game goals. I am also cutting Arcbound Crusher from my robot army AND voltron decks for Mechanized Production. Crusher never got large enough to be more useful than a sword carrying creature in either build.
Got out of the house and got some games in! Real MVP of the weekend was the abyss. Completely locked down every game i stuck it. Also, Spreading Plague was huge. Highly recommend both, if you can afford Abyss.
No deck changes planned for the time being, eagerly awaiting the next set.
I dont mind The Abyss, just awkward in my meta, 2/5 of the decks it just cripples while the others just spam bodies anyways. I have thought about putting Spreading Plague back in since I run more combo than Mishra but it is always fun to set up the Mishra combos...just sucks with spreading plague out since Mishra will die. Only downside is the Eldrazi player since colorless is unfortunately not a color

You definitely have to play around spreading plague, thats for sure. I don't currently (god i hope i dont jinx it...) have an eldrazi player in my group, but that would definitely hinder the value of plague. My thoughts on abyss though, i'd rather cripple someone and then try to slow the flow of bodies the other players are dropping than not do either.
I mean I understand what you're saying but idk, I just prefer turboing to my combo or mishra fun time. Doesnt help I have a zur player(actually switched to zur to hate me out with an easy stony silence) in my group so gotta go fast before stony silence comes out.
like I'll admit I should probably hop generals cuz there are far better artifact combo generals but I cant abandon one of my first commander decks that I really loved n who doesnt love possibility storm/nether void shenanigans along with making praetor's grasp a lot stronger than it is at taking things out
yeah, i get exactly where you are at. The biggest problem with mishra is that he suffers from a glass ceiling - and Zur makes that ceiling painfully obvious. Mishra, no matter how good you build him, is still inferior to basically every other general at what he does; especially when in the presence of truely OP generals.
Might i recommend Arcum if you want to fight fire with fire? Or, if you want, you could shift to Grixis storm with mishra, but thats a bold strat that is a high risk.
I mean I'll stick with Mishra even if there is a Zur player just for me. It's an honorable feeling somebody switched to Zur because they didn't like Mishra. Also I find Arcum beyond boring otherwise he'd be my artifact general in a heartbeat.
But anywho, anything new worth talking about in Amonkhet for Mishra? Been keeping up somewhat with spoilers but not enough.
But anywho, anything new worth talking about in Amonkhet for Mishra? Been keeping up somewhat with spoilers but not enough.
I will be doing a set review very shortly, been very busy with work and my daughter, so i havent been playing as much lately, but the set does have a few great EDH gems in it.
I may end up trying soothsaying. I like the idea of planning what Possibility Storm will bring me. Plus I can use it to stack things the way I want.
Not a bad strategy at all. I prefer to leverage Sensei's top for that, 3 cards for 1 mana, but with adequate mana rocks, soothsaying lets you restack even deeper.
I am not sure what your budget allows for, but have you considered Scroll Rack for this slot instead? Lets you leverage Possibility Storm to cast from your hand, and lets you cycle your hand away if you don't like it.
Sorry for the set review delays - since Leovold was banned i have been in a panic to draw up a new competitive deck, and more of my time has been focused at that then reviewing the new set for Mishra and posting it here.
I agree with Rewind, Scroll Rack and Top are infinitely cheaper. If you can afford/have both you'll get the effect you're looking for. That's not to say soothsaying is bad because the shuffle ability is actually extremely relevant with topdeck manipulation which while scroll rack is in most cases better, it does feel pretty bad when you use scroll rack n cant follow up with a fetch or tutor so you can shuffle the deck.
TL;DR - The gods are definitely underwhelming, and frankly I will only be picking up 1 card from this set (As Foretold). I don't see a lot of value in a cycling based Mishra deck since we don't have access to cards like Astral Slide. Anyone have fun thoughts in that space? The lack of really great artifacts in this set makes me sad, but we just had a great block, so we can take a few misses.
Blue
Kefnet the Mindful - the only god worthy of note. Drawing a card is always good, and he conditionally untaps a land via returning it to your hand. Could be fun with landfall effects, but I won't be running him.
As Foretold - HOLY CRAP THIS CARD! Free counterspells on opponents' turns. Free spells on our own turn. Hard to remove permanent type (impossible pretty much for black and red). Only 3cc? I am struggling to see why I shouldn't buy a playset and run it in every blue deck i own.
Trial of Knowledge - Honestly? Bad compared to what we have as card advantage engines. None of the trials impress me.
Vizier of Tumbling Sands - Lots of combo-ability here. Plenty of rocks tap for more than 1 mana, Pemmin's goes infinite easy. Not sure if i'd place him in Mishra, but theres always tons of options with the ability to untap any permanent.
Glorious End - I got excited for a better timestop. Then i finished reading the card. Since I don't run any instant win the game combos in my build, I won't be running this card, but if you run an infinite combo into something like fireball, this could fit in your build. Wouldn't be hard to replace the destroy all permanents combo with an infinite mana combo. This one is a great card, but very conditional on what you use as a win condition.
Combat Celebrant - If redzone is your thing, this guy might be worthy of a slot. I won't run him, but hes not the worst option I've ever seen.
Harsh Mentor - DO NOT RUN THIS CARD! I am warning you right now, this guy will be your own doom if you sleeve him up. Your opponents will clone, steal, reanimate etc. this guy soo fast you won't know what hit you. I can already see someone Rite of Replicationing this guy and ruining some poor mishra player's day..
Insult // Injury - Double damage for the turn for 3 mana? I am sure someone could find a way to make this work.
Cruel Reality - God this thing is sweet. The 7 cmc just ruins it for me, but man, its an impressive effect.
Dispossess - Not a card for us, but something to be aware of moving forward.
Dread Wanderer - Unfortunately, this guy doesn't quite align. To get value, you really need a spell slinger / stax build, and thats an unfortunately poor combination for Mishra.
Archfiend of Ifnir - Whyyyyy! WHY DID YOU HAVE TO BAN LEOVOLD . Good if you run effects like Timetwister or Wheel of Fortune. Not good outside of that though.
Never // Return - If you run Murder, this is strictly better.
Colorless
Pyramid of the Pantheon - A slow to charge Gilded Lotus. I like this card, but am not a fan of the 3 turn build up process nor that if you copy it, you start over. Stick with Gilded Lotus.
Throne of the God-Pharaoh - A great card for Krenko, could be useable in a creature based deck. Any combo that creates infinite creatures basically wins the game with this card if you have a way to tap them or if they enter play tapped.
Oracle's Vault - A cool card, but I feel that just like Pyramid of the Pantheon, taking 3 turns to charge up really destroys its value.
Multicolor
Rags // Riches - Pricey, but very powerful effects. Rags wrecks goblins and elf ball strategies, and riches really punishes decks that rely on voltron or low creature counts.
Lands
Cascading Cataracts - Actually not a bad mana fixing land for the late game if your mana base needs work. Indestructible lands are always good, and being able to shape your mana pool as desired is powerful.
Let me know if you think I missed a noteworthy card and why and i'll add it to this list!
Since taking an interest in this delightful deck, I've had some difficult years financially. But at long last I have scraped together a 100 card list. Bear in mind I've had almost zero budget for this. It's almost entirely built with cards I already owned or have been lucky enough to trade into. My list:
And maybe some better tutors (Vampiric Tutor seems especially good).
Sadly Guardian Beast has tripled in prcie4 since I took an interest in this deck. Maybe someday. Mana Drain would also be nice, and is also a "maybe someday" card (less desired than the Beats, though). Probably never get a Workshop.
Workshop aside, I'm very happy with the manabase. Obviously the 2 depletion lands have got to go (4 bounce lands plus Scortched Ruins does help out, but nonetheless). These will be replaced with pain lands, fast lands, or Shadowmoor filter lands. If I end up needing more colour fixing, I'll also cut some weaker utility lands.
So your list looks great! Can I make a recommendation? Try out Vandalblast - combined with mycosynth lattice you can clear every permanent you dont control for 5 mana. It should be a fairly cheap pick up too, if you can find it!
If your meta has a lot of go wide strategies (like rats, tokens, etc) - 1 card that works WONDERS is crawlspace. Its another fairly cheap pick up, and it will really stymie players that want to bash you with dozens of creatures, since you can easily generate chump blockers with an artifact deck.

The Rats deck was actually mine (my brother didn't have decks with him). But I played against Elves and another monoG aggro deck today, and I do seem soft to decks which vomit creatures onto the board. Crawlspace is going in for sure, and I might try Silent Arbiter also (I don't generate token swarms in this list, so the symmetry should be okay).
Vandalblast looks pretty fun too. Thanks for all your work on the primer, this deck is totally up my alley.
Let me know how your games go! Any and all experience you can bring back to the thread and share is valuable. What kinds of decks does your meta have beyond green tokens / elves? My younger brother plays Freyalise and shes a freaking nightmare for this deck (i have to quickly fetch a Pithing Needle and protect it, or I am in for a REALLY steep game).
My Brother's Elf deck is Ezuri. I built that for him myself, and minus the Cradle it is built for maximum competitive value. I don't suspect to be a good match-up against stronger decks like that (especially 1-on-1). He Also has a Sachi deck - not tokens, just crazy ramp and green "Timmy" monsters. Ge is building slivers - more crazy aggro.
My other regular opponent has Superfriends, and more casual Karn, Spirits and Demons. The Demon deck is hilarious - all lands and Demons! If he gets the right start it's actually very deadly, but usually it's clunky.
When I play in a LGS the meta is pretty wild an open. I can expect to see all varieties of styles and power levels. I don't get out enough to have a good idea what is more or less common, but my experiences have been quite varied. I'll try to get some public play in soon.
A card I'd forgotten was Master Transmuter (I kind of thought there was a U artificer I had neglected). I have a couple LGSs yet to hit up for a Darksteel Forge too (and that's probably the top priority). I have some store credit (if I can find my card) - would you recommend Blightsteel or Scarecrone if I can only get one?
Edit - I think mostly I need some sleeves! Riffle-shuffling unsleeved Nether Void, Transmute Artifact, and City Of Traitors can earn you some looks.
Needle is the only way to fight some commanders - stuff like Krenko, Freyalise, Azami. Its a dirty card, but those are also really dirty commanders vs Mishra and we have few ways to combat them without it. Another GREAT option is cursed totem, but you have to be very careful with your own creatures when running it.

Ah, yeah, the instant the word 'competitive' comes up, Mishra is in for an uphill battle. Not to say you cannot win though! You have to play tight and politically minded, but you can win for sure! Good thing is, you have some insider info about that green deck, if you are willing to exploit it!

First - i LOVE Master Transmuter - she is INCREDIBLY versatile. She can protect your key cards by returning them to your hand (as a cost too, so your opponent can do NOTHING to stop it from happening), she cheats in bombs, she is an artificer so she benefits from cards like Cavern of Souls...shes just fantastic. An amazing addition if you have a copy. Secondly, Darksteel forge is my primary win condition for this deck in most of its forms, so i highly recommend getting that when you can. Even without a niv's disk combo, its just oppressive to have indestructible permanents. Blightsteel is my back up win condition, so i would prioritize him over Scarecrone. Crone is amazing, but is more of a versatility option, as well as a recursion engine; which generates us value, but doesnt win the game.
@Crimhead
I really like your list, it reminds me of when I was still adjusting Mishra to my liking, that feeling and fun of just playing around with everything that Mishra stood for. Was also fun to get the Ice Cave lockout, so many janky wins it was great. One thing I will say is while I understand guardian beast is a problem due to price, but why no Padeem? He protects ALL your artifacts and more than likely will draw you an extra card each turn.
As for recommendation of what to get, what Lord said, Darksteel Forge is the win con and once its out, unless they have exile you become a pain. Scarecrone is nice and all and his abilities are real good but not the level of effect Darksteel Forge produces just by being out.
@LordRewind
Going back to your set review, I'm actually not a big fan of As Foretold OUTSIDE of a control deck since they can capitalize immediately with an Ancestral Visions and then from there just seal the deal as they get a free counter + any additional counter mana they have open. Tempo is debatable but since they dont really run AV, hesitant since that's a turn with 3 mana doing nothing.
Padeem!
Padeem was intended for my deck since he was first spoiled. I've had most of the deck sitting unfinished in a box for so long now...
It seems by the time I was finally gathering odds and ends (to top up to 100 cards) I had plum forgot about him. 50 cents - cheap! Time to go shopping.
@Lord Rewind,
If it's any consultation, I used to be a card magician (sleight of hand). I have a delicate shuffle that won't hurt the cards.
I'm running far to many creature activations for Totem, but Needle goes in before my next shuffle.
Long time lurker, first time commenter, made this account just to chat here.
Thank you so much for this primer! Your list led me to my first real tuned edh deck, long term play group, and generally falling in love with the format.
Want to put in a good word for Pithing Needle, I put it in my deck to counter a friend's Ayli deck and had him in conniptions. Of course, good vs planeswalkers and other random permanents. The real clincher was that I could tutor it via Artificer's Intuition, along with Nihil Spellbomb and Meekstone.
Padeem has performed well with Liquimetal Coating, as well as the tutorable Ashnod's Transmogrant. I like the card as a way to protect Mishra and Padeem on a semi-permanent basis; plus, it sacs itself.

Thanks mate! Really tickles me pink when people enjoy the primer and the deck. I love the synergy you use between Padeem and Liquidmetal effects, really solid stuff. For tutoring for Pithing Needle, another great, versatile option is Trinket Mage, who i recommend to anyone running a fair number of 1cc artifacts in their build.
Although my favorite target is always Sensei's Divining Top. "1, draw a card and shuffle your deck (once a turn)" is great, although it really slows down the game.

And maybe some better tutors (Vampiric Tutor seems especially good).Sadly Guardian Beast has tripled in prcie4 since I took an interest in this deck.
I tested the deck vs Relentless Rats (one-on-one). First game I got a Chalice on 5 to lock out Thrumming Stone & Marrow-Gnawer (and also Thoughtcast). Second game I succumbed to the Rat beats, but had I not misplayed I could have attacked with Hellkite Tyrant (with a Mycosynth Lattice in play just in time.
I enjoy the deck every bit as much as I knew I would. I'm looking forward to refining it and playing it.

I am going to pretend i never heard you say that you were riffle shuffling an unsleeved nether void. god, my skin is crawling right now.

@LordRewind
@Lord Rewind,
If it's any consultation, I used to be a card magician (sleight of hand). I have a delicate shuffle that won't hurt the cards.
I'm running far to many creature activations for Totem, but Needle goes in before my next shuffle.

Although my favorite target is always Sensei's Divining Top. "1, draw a card and shuffle your deck (once a turn)" is great, although it really slows down the game.
