It was just an option for those who are more used to using the Boonweaver Combo.
That's why I included two other methods.
What I'm saying is you can use exactly the same steps you'd use with Boonweaver with Hulk instead: Karmic Guide into Fiend Hunter into Reveillark into looping Reveillark to pull all the creatures under CMC 7 out of your deck and loop them as desired. (You can get additional creatures with Hulk if you want.) Getting Rector to get Boonweaver only does anything if you're planning to fetch up one or more creatures with CMC over 6. Otherwise you're just adding steps for no benefit.
If you want to add another tool into your toolbox, Uncage the Menagerie for 3 can get you Azusa, Magus of the Crucible and Knight of the Reliquary. This gets you a Strip-lock.
When facing graveyard removal, the diversity and redundancy of the tools available makes this deck so resilient.
I straight up replaced my Crucible of Worlds with Ramunap Excavator and haven't been happier. It's easier to tutor for with Birthing Pod, it works better with Saffi and friends, it's a straight across better deal than the Artifact.
I was also running Salvage Scout for a little artifact recursion, however Restoration Specialist is doing a much better job.
In the MWS world, for many players, winning also makes you a noob.
The same applies to:
-Knowing the rules.
-Netdecking.
-Not netdecking.
-Using old versions of a card (yeah, it has hapenned to me: "Ugh... ugly pic noob")
-Knowing English.
-Using phases.
-Countering spells.
<@MarkRosewater> THis is a secret we've carefully guarded but for this chat I'm going to spill the beans.
<@MarkRosewater> Some cards in Magic are better than others.
<@MarkRosewater> Ssh, don't tell anyone.
Yeah, I made the same swap from Crucible to Excavator. It's much easier to tutor for (I have one way of tutoring for artifacts - Enlightened Tutor, which is almost certainly going to be used for a sac outlet) and can fuel Birthing Pod, Chord of Calling, Eldritch Evolution and Natural Order. I was pretty close to cutting Crucible of Worlds, as I had little real synergy outside of running a full package of fetchlands, but making it into a green creature makes it worth a slot.
Man I can't believe I've never seen this before. I've had a saffi edh deck since around 2011. The deck I have now is a lot more tuned than when I started. I just spent most of today updating it and it seems pretty solid. Currently it seems to pretty consistently combo out(goldfishing) on turn 5. It's by far my most competitive deck. But it'll never be tier 1. Saffi is just not consistent or fast enough to beat the best decks, but that's fine. Tier 2 is more fun anyway. I've found that while there are quite a few free sac outlets, most of them don't really do anything outside of the combo so I don't include them. I try to be fast as possible without giving up consistency. Every card synergizes with every other card. I don't think I'll ever have a perfect build, but this is what I have so far. http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/15-05-18-fuP-deck/
Sideboard cards are cards I had potentially thought about including in the deck. Feel free to ask for ideas. I've tinkered with Saffi for like a million hours. Sometimes I wonder if Saffi is actually better as a token commander using saffi as resiliency instead of comboing and using hate bears as support.
Your TappedOut link doesn't work for me, but I would be interested in seeing how you've tuned Saffi.
This is what I'm running with at the present after a lot of tweaking, and I feel it's about as far as I can take her in a competitive direction. I could probably increase the speed a bit, but it would come at the cost of resilience and disruption which I don't feel is worth it in my meta. The big constraint on some of the deckbuilding is Reaper of Flight Moonsilver. Getting delirium is kinda clunky and necessitates decisions like running the 2cmc land fetching sorceries instead of mana dorks, but having a creature based sac outlet opens up so many lines of play that I simply can't do without it - I was really reluctant to run in when I first saw the card, but having tried it, it's one of the most important cards in the deck.
Overall, I feel the deck works well - it's decently fast, can slow other decks down with the hatebears and has a lot of different ways to combo off giving it plenty of resilience. Of course, adding black and possibly a fourth colour (Tymna/x) would make it better, but that would be boring....
try this one: https://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/16-05-18-saffi-edh/?cb=1526521129
for some reason it was auto marked as private. I generated the list directly from Cockatrice. Today I was thinking of adding in Felidar Guardian replacing wood elves for birthing pod shenanigans.
But anyway I'll give you the quick run down on what my deck special. I use mana dorks as my prime source of mana acceleration, heavily using Gaea's cradle for a massive genesis wave or to help me combo out early. Yesterday I was looking for good g/w wincons and I found on reddit in the competitive subreddit living plane is used with elesh norn to kill all opponents lands and basically lock them out of the game. Linvala also works with living plane to stop all land tapping on your opponent's side of the field. Well since I already have both of those in the deck it makes sense to add in living plane too. G/w is decent at getting enchantments, so I started focusing a little more on getting them out since that's more reliable than depending solely on the artifacts. I have a small 9 card enchantment package I can fairly reliably search for. I've looked at and analyzed every card in my deck 100s of times. I'm open to hear why there might be a better replacement. Every card does a few things. There are a few flex slots and always tinkering to be done, but I feel really close to a tuned saffi deck list.
1 thing to note. I recently took out renegade rallier out of my deck. I feel like it doesn't do anything except combo with saffi. Sure it can bring back a small creature, but it just seems too situational.
@PhroX
Looks decent. I would add in more ramp or at least more 2 drops. I feel that solemn simulacrum is too slow and cute. Reaper of Flight Moonsilver seems too unreliable. There are better cards that do what you want from Silence than silence. Gift of immortality seems too slow, but then again my Saffi deck is trying to fast. I'm just trying to be as fast as possible without adding in situational cards. Every card in my deck synergizes with a bunch of other stuff. That's where I feel a good Saffi deck should be.
Living Plane would be nice if I had £150 or so to spend. That's a card I really wish I'd picked up a few years back. Same with Mox Diamond - I do have three of them, but they're all in decks I feel need it a bit more than Saffi and I'd love to have grabbed a few more.
Looking over your list, I do like where you're going. You're pushing more for pure speed than I am. I generally feel that Saffi is never going to be able to compete with the fastest combo decks in speed, so I'm happy to trade off a little for other benefits, but I can certainly see the arguments the other way. There are a few card that stand out to be as being a bit questionable - all of which I've actually tried in the past and cut:
Genesis - Just too slow and clunky, even for my deck, and it does nothing until you get it into the 'yard. Peacekeeper - People are attacking me. Big deal. That's what I have a life total to deal with. If it didn't have the upkeep, maybe, but even then, it's never impressed me in a deck like this. False Prophet to wipe the board (easy to trigger with the sac outlets we run) is a more reliable way to protect you from creatures from my experience. Or even just a good old fashioned Wrath of God - a deck like this can recover quicker than most. Acidic Slime - Not really what I want to spend 5 mana on - I'd run a Qasali Pridemage or Caustic Caterpillar over it, especially as you have ways of tutoring for Strip Mine if you need the land destruction side of it. The Pridemage and Caterpillar also synergise with Saffi if you need to pop off multiple targets. Regal Force - This probably works better for you than it did for me with the mana dorks around, but I found I was never tutoring for this, and it was never what I wanted to spend 7 mana on when I drew it.
As for why I like some things you're not running: Renegade Rallier gets back permanents. Which includes stuff like Altar of Dementia (which, for me at least, is always getting blown up), or even just a fetchland, in which case it's as good as a Wood Elves. Also goes nicely with Birthing Pod - Pod Saffi into Rallier, gets back Saffi. Felidar Guardian does good work for me, both as a combo piece, and as general utility either retriggering an ETB or untapping something with a good tap effect, particularly pod. Solemn Simulacrum is a card I know isn't that good (and indeed I'm usually one calling for people to cut it from EDH decks) but it does fulfill a role in this deck, as several of the more complicated combo loops need a creature with draw a card on ETB/LTB and I feel this is actually the best given how the deck works as a whole. It's easy to kill it off to get the draw, being an artifact is useful for the next card I'll discuss, and it looks a lot more worthwhile when you can get multiple ETB/LTB triggers (e.g. by saccing Saffi to protect it). Reaper of Flight Moonsilver is an awkward one. It's not in any way a card I like running - it's expensive at 5 mana and requires building around somewhat in order to work. But it's a sac outlet my creature tutors can fetch. And that makes it an incredibly useful tool to have. I didn't expect it to be good, I felt the drawbacks would outweigh the utility, but having tested it to try out a really complicated Birthing Pod chain*, I found it so useful that I warped my deck to accommodate it. If we had access to a Carrion Feeder, I'd cut it in a heartbeat. But we don't, so.... Nothing does what Silence does better than Silence. You're playing a combo deck. It protects your combo turn for a single mana without telegraphing it the way things like casting Grand Abolisher the previous turn do. It can also be used to mess with other people's combos. For a competitive white deck, especially one without blue, this card is invaluable. Gift of Immortality is one of those cards I keep looking at cutting, but I keep finding that it overperforms when I actually get it in game. Whether being part of a loop with Sun Titan or Boonweaver Giant (making the latter still have some use if your Pattern of Rebirth gets exiled, which is not an uncommon event in my experience, grave hate is a thing) or just adding stupid value to something that you can keep killing (e.g. Saffi), it just works....
*The Pod chain in question goes like this - Pod Saffi into Renegade Rallier, recurr Saffi. Pass turn. Next turn, if no-one's blown up any of your pieces, sac Saffi to protect Rallier, Pod Rallier into Felidar Guardian, Saffi brings back Rallier, Rallier brings back Saffi, Guardian blinks Pod. Pod Guardian into Karmic Guide, Guide brings back Guardian, Guardian blinks Pod. Sac Saffi to protect Guardian, Pod Guardian into Reveillark, Saffi returns Guardian, blink Pod. Pod Guardian into Cataclysmic Gearhulk. Keep Pod and Rallier. Reveillark trigger returns Guardian and Guide. Guide returns 'Lark, Guardian blinks Pod. Pod Guardian into Reaper of Flight Moonsilver. With delirium, you have a Guide/Lark loop that can return Guardian as the second card to get infinite untaps of your land for mana and your Pod for tutors. Do the latter to get a creature than can draw cards with the Lark/Guide loop, dig until you get Blasting Station, play it and win. It's rather silly and overcomplex and takes two turns to go off, but only actually takes one card (Birthing Pod) plus your commander, and I consider all the various pieces of the combo worth running anyway.
Yeah you're right about Genesis. A few years ago I heard about a Saffi deck that won a tournment with Genesis. I think it was a token based deck that kept recurring tokens for the eventual win. I've kept it in so far to hopefully get value out of it in a grindy slow match, but i haven't really needed it so far. I actually haven't played this deck in years, because it's been too good for my friends.
I think I put peace keeper in here after I would get swamped at GPs. It's still nice to have. I've used it to stall against an animar deck, which I won because of it. I could do false prophet, but i have mana dorks I'd rather try and not kill. Also if I have a sac outlet I'm probably geared to win anyway.
Acidic slime is bulky. But I realized when trying to make my deck lean, if I make too many cuts to try and make my deck even faster i'll get inconsistent as hell. Anyway acidic slime is here for the land destruction. With my ramp I can get it out turn 2 or 3. And when I have an infinite loop with lark I can nuke everyone's lands, enchantments, and artifacts. I do have strip mine and land tutors, but i'd rather save the tutors to search for gaea's cradle. And if I need to go 1v1 I have several ways to nuke lands.
I did look at cutting regal force. But it's too invaluable for those times when I have too have mana and not enough card draw. It helps me get back into the game when i fall behind. Plus I draw a chunk of cards, sac it, bring it back with saffi to try and dig for a combo piece. Regal force can help me dig 14 cards or more at times. With all the free mana I have I can even do it tapped out and still be able to win. With the combo and phyrexian altar I can draw my deck with regal force. Then I play my free mana and search for one of numerous ways to kill everyone.
I might add in renegade rallier again, but I'm not sure. The thing is I don't need a million creatures that combo with safii. All the other ones do multiple things on top of combo with saffi. rallier combos and brings back something small only if something died during your turn. It seems like a lot to ask for in a deck with limited spots.
I plan on switching wood elves for felidar guardian. It was in here for a long time, because of the ability to get savannah, draw cards with skullclamp, another body for cradle, can fetch dryad arbor for cradle(2 bodies). But i'm trying to stay away from 3 cmc ramp.
I may need silence or grand abolisher in the future, but for now I rely on saffi being able to bring back creatures if I need it. Sun titan and eternal witness are also great. And with silence your opponents can still use activated abilities. For now I don't want a card that won't do anything or me outside of combo.
I might take out a few cards and add in hatebears or maybe grand abolisher. Have you tried grafted weargear? or spawning pit? They are free sac outlets, but don't do anything, which is why i didn't include them. I don't need my deck to be filled with sac outlets. Having the combo ready, but unable to win is awkward.
There is another creature sac outlet you should use, mirror entity. Use mirror entity's ability for 0 100 times or so, trigger tutors and recursion between mirror triggers, pull every creature from your deck and win. It's little complicated, but i think it's worth it.
I suppose Peacekeeper is somewhat of a meta call. I just find I don't get attacked that much, and outside of Sylvan Library I'm not spending much life, so dedicating a slot to this, especially with the upkeep cost, feels a bit of a waste. But if you're in a more creature heavy meta, I can see it doing some work.
If Regal Force counted all creatures, I'd probably consider putting it back in, but I found I would rarely get more than 3 cards off of it and often less than that, and that's really not where I want to be for a 7 mana spell. Even given the creature synergies we have, I'd rather just run Harmonize. With your higher concentration of green creatures with the mana dorks though, I can definitely see it working better for you than it did for me.
Renegade Rallier is one of those cards I was not that exceited about until I actually tried it, at which point I found it to be very helpful. It's certainly not as good as Sun Titan for recovering from a board wipe, but it's very good at bringing back things that got hit by spot removal (and there are plenty of CMC 2 or less cards in my list that any opponent with half a brain is going to want to kill), and with a full fetch package, it's not that hard to get a revolt trigger. Still, as you say, slots are a premium, so I can see why it didn't make the cut for you, even if I think it's a good addition to our toolbox.
Silence is not just a way to protect your combo. It's also a fantastic way to interact with other peoples' combo. The URx player flashes in a Pestermite EoT? Silence him on his upkeep. Someone plays a Doomsday? Silence in response. Food Chain? Silence in response. And so on. It helps to have a reasonable knowledge of what you're playing against, but it can be an excellent tool to buy the table time to stop a combo. And of course, it's still an amazing way to ensure your combo sticks. But I would say that it is somewhat of a meta call. If the kind of situations I describe don't come up much, then I can see not running it.
One card I just noticed that isn't in your list but I feel really should be is Natural Order. Particularly with your mana dorks, it's going to be really easy to have something to sacrifice to it, and getting a Protean Hulk for four mana is rather good. T1 Dork, T2 sac outlet, T3 NO, win seems like a pretty good play.
I don't really find I need more sac outlets in general - Grafted Wargear seems really bad as it's limited to sorcery speed which is fine when comboing but not much use when you want to use Saffi to retrigger a Reclamation Sage's ETB at instant speed to kill a Isochron Scepter and Spawning Pit is worse than the other artifact ones - it's having one I can get with the myriad of creature tutors that is key. Mirror Entity is indeed an option, and one I have tried in the past, but it doesn't work for all the loops - some of them need to have one creature left in play while saccing another (e.g the step in the HulkWeaver lines where you fetch Fiend Hunter, which is very relevant as these are the most powerful lines of play we have) - and it leaves you without a board if your combo gets interrupted. It's actually what I took out for the Reaper, and I haven't looked back since.
Peacekeeper is mostly there so i play in a lower power group i can defend myself because I'll be the biggest threat. In a creature meta or against voltron i can die pretty easily. Peacekeep is just nice insurance that i don't go down so easy.
The thing with regal force is even if i only draw 3 or 4 cards, I can get that draw when i need it. Being a creature is huge for g/w. Harmonize, while nice, comes in at random. I can't depend on it if i need it. So it's better to have an overcosted draw spell when you need it than an undercosted one that's not there when you need it. Plus the combos you can do with it.
Like I said I may have to try renegade rallier again.
Ok silence seems a bit better now. I might have to try it.
I used to have natural order in here. Way back i used to have avenger of zendikar and craterhoof as alternate win cons. I would natural order into hoof for the win. But I decided to cut them and focus more on the combo aspect instead of going 50/50. Natural order did less. Now with hulk it could be alright. But I need a followup, a sac outlet, otherwise hulk could get exiled or i just lose or whatever. The other card worth ordering into is regal force. That's nice getting a 3 mana discount and drawing some cards, but it won't get me closer to winning the game. Sure drawing cards gets me closer to winning, but when i natural order i want to either win that turn or set up a huge advantage. In my deck it doesn't really seem to do either. When i play hulk on the field I want to be able to sac it right away otherwise i risk it getting bounced or exiled. So just getting a 3 mana discount on regal force doesn't seem enough to me. Anyway I'll have fewer creatures to draw cards from considering how early i can play order.
Mirror entity is odd. Aside from being able to combo with cradle I can make my dorks huge and take out a player. It's also skullclampable, suntitan able, and reveilarkable. It's probably better in my deck because of how many dorks i have.
I haven't tried it out with my cards yet, only playing it around in my head. Does it look OK now?
What I'm saying is you can use exactly the same steps you'd use with Boonweaver with Hulk instead: Karmic Guide into Fiend Hunter into Reveillark into looping Reveillark to pull all the creatures under CMC 7 out of your deck and loop them as desired. (You can get additional creatures with Hulk if you want.) Getting Rector to get Boonweaver only does anything if you're planning to fetch up one or more creatures with CMC over 6. Otherwise you're just adding steps for no benefit.
Well, let it be a scientific exercise.
but anyway, as for the new set, I will be testing Ramunap Excavator
I also picked up a Protean Hulk to jam into my deck.
When facing graveyard removal, the diversity and redundancy of the tools available makes this deck so resilient.

My Saffi deck
