I would say I know of 5 that I would probably change. I would take out the enlisted wurm, pariah's shield, worldslayer, sejiri's steppe, and selestnya sanctuary. I wasn't impressed with the genesis hydra.
Sorry for the late reply. Enlisted Wurm would be one of those pet cards I mentiond, but it's also been very solid often getting two lands because of two creatures getting cast and often adding 3-4 devotion. It's really a nice play for the turn after I get Karametra. Worldslayer can be a bad draw but out of Stonehewer Giant it ends the game with Avacyn, Myojin of Life's Web or Spearbreaker Behemoth out and people never anticipate it. If I draw into it in a game of EDH, there's often something that forces me to discard and then I just Mistveil it.
I agree with you on Pariah's Shield though. It's just to clunky and fragile to serve as good protection. If I'm cutting it however I think I have to include Behemoth Sledge as a way to protect my life total because there are games where I just take a lot of damage while building up my board and then don't have enough space left to maneuver lifewise. What are your thought's on that? Sejiri Steppe has been very good for me in conjunction with Knight of the Reliquary or even Crop Rotation. That I'm able to protect my commander from something like Chaos Warp or Avacyn from Paths and Swords catches a lot of people off guard and it can also be good to force some damage through to a planeswalker.
I just recently put Selesnya Sanctuary into the deck for it's ability to smooth over landlight draws and also to reset Mosswort Bridge which an incredibly powerful card in this deck. Out of Crop Rotation or KotR it can also save a land from removal. I like to have at least one Karoo in most of my decks for those reasons.
Why weren't you impressed with Genesis Hydra? My reasoning is, that we can play it easily for X=6-10 mana and even more and we get two big creatures, a lot of devotion and very likely some very usefull effect because we can choose from a lot of options. Whatever we get also can't be countered.
Well Thunderfoot Baloth is one of the cards I'm currently testing.
I'm also trying Siege Behemoth and Angel of the Dire Hour.
Has anyone already some results with the new cards?
I'll try to post an updated list soon.
Well! I've finally updated the decklist in the OP. I think it is now more streamlined with new disruption and better card selection.
If you have questions about specific card choices feel free to ask
I get why Armageddon would be a nice fit for this deck but it's not the kind of game I want to play (and neither want my opponents). I even cut Worldslayer in the last update
It has been nearly a year, but I've finally come around to updated this thread. The list is still pretty much the same with only a few changes. I added Seeborn Muse and Winding Canyons which brings some nice flexibility. I also swapped around some other cards that didn't really work out and brought stuff back in.
The last sets didn't bring too much but what they brought was very sweet. I added Woodland Bellower which adds a fantastic toolbox in this deck, as well as Emeria Shepherd which is just tailormade.
As always let me know what you like and what you don't like and if you have any questions don't be afraid to ask
After I a bit of a break from this deck, I did a major overhaul. I lowered the curve quite a bit and added a little more acceleration. I also implemented a good amount of recursion to make it more resilient in the lategame. I haven't tested the changes a lot, but from what I've seen so far it is much more streamlined and harder to disrupt. Overall I'm fairly happy about how the changes worked out, however I wouldn't mind to find a cut so I can reinclude Angel of Serenity.
I made a couple of adjustments to the deck. One of the more interesting cards I want to test is Glacial Chasm. Theoretically it should fit the deck very well.
With this latest update I not also included some newer cards, but also made the deck much more streamlined. I'm now very happy with were the deck is and how it plays.
Hey man, I was trying a decklist more lockdown oriented but am trying something more like this now. I'm not sure how your playgroup is, but I recommend the eldrazi, specifically Ulamog. The on cast ability is quite strong, and sometimes the only way I find to deal with a must answer threat. Plus the indestructibility is something the deck quite likes. With all the creature searching I am liking them even more in a version similar to yours. I am going to test new Emrakul too. Stealing a players turn is serious stuff in EDH.
Seasons past might interest you too, total blow out especially with something doubling your mana.
Hi, sorry for taking so long to reply. I just started a new job and moved to a different part of the country, so I didn't have much time lately.
Anyhow, the Eldrazi Titans (the old as well as the new) are definitely among the most powerful creatures in the game and there can definitely be a spot for them in the deck. I don't run them because I try to keep the curve relatively low in order to be able to cast multiple spells a turn so I can be flexible and also to get as many lands as possible. The other reason is also personal preference. Sure, I could just bring out the biggest bullies on the playground and stomp face with them, however I like to play this deck because it is a bit durdly and tries to assemble strong creature synergies. So bottomline: I like to play creatures that are a little less powerful by themselves but have powerful synergies with each other and also won't get stuck in my hand due to prohibitive manacost, however the most powerful version of the deck might want one or more Eldrazi Titan.
Since I last updated the decklist we got two new sets in Eldritch Moon and Conspiracy and both yielded one card which I find promising for the deck. One is of course Eldritch Evolution which is just another very good tutor to enable the aforementioned synergies (some might say "Doesn't every game play out the same with all the tutors?", but I find that because the deck is a bit on the slow side it needs to be reactive and so I always need to search for different cards to tackle different situations).
The other is Selvala, Heart of the Wilds. Even having yet to play a game with her, I suspect she might become a staple for green creature decks. Games are usually won by having access to the most cards and the ability to deploy them and as she provides both (especially the mana ability seems singularly powerful) I think she will be very strong in the deck. She also helps to play Karametra a turn earlier which is also a very important feature for low cmc creatures in this deck.
I also want to add Llanowar Elves to the deck, as the mana dorks continue to be very good in this deck. That means I need to find three cuts. One will be Rout which can't be searched for and also doesn't have the versatility of the other sweepers in the deck. Finding the other two cuts will be more difficult and I am glad for any suggestion!!
What do you think of panglacial wurm? It seems like it might be a really consistent threat with mistveiled plains to put it back into the library and karametra triggers to fish it back out.
I just recently pondered the inclusion of Panglacial Wurm, however I concluded that it probably isn't worth it. The reason is, that a 9/5 french vanilla for seven mana (or nine including activating Mistveil Plains) is probably too inefficient and if I have to resort to it for the lack of better options I am pretty screwed already. Adding the fact that I might draw into it, I decided to abstain form it.
Fair enough. I do play with the Eldrazi and I suppose it does result in a lot of games ending with Emrakul. Ulamog though I think you might enjoy, since he is less of a win condition and more of an answer to things that need to get exiled, and will do so even if he's countered. I do love the deck in general though, its pretty insanely efficient.
I love this style deck! Only difference is I use Cap Sisay as the General, but I still include Karametra. My biggest problem has always been Cyclonic Rift. I loved doing the Aavacyn+Archtype protection softlock, but it was hard to sustain and could still be beaten. I then tried to go the Armageddon route+mana dorks but I wouldn't always have enough mana left over to play my bigger creatures. For now, I use Hokori+Vorniclex to slow opponents while I ramp underneath with mana dorks. Typically I just slam Iona calling blue to end it. Of course, I have to resolve Iona all of these in which case Dragonlord Dromoka is essential. I am a bit biased as I have a serious prejudice against cyclonic rift but I found it to be quite the aggravating card to play against. I knew the default strategy is to simply attack the land bases of Blue X players but I didn't want to hammer my own (even with mana dorks out) because I would be a little too behind. Hokori is very good at land hurt and mana dork can evade and I still get a couple lands to boot, and then comes Vorniclex in short order.
Cyclonic Rift is a real nuisance in this format (not that I wouldn't play it :P) and especially with this deck. There are three suggestions that I can offer:
- Ghostway and Eerie Interlude: Those are the most commonly known. They have the upside that they are versatile answers to multiple boardstates and can also offer great value, depending on the board. The downside is that they are instants and thus hard to interact with (tutor and recur) in a GW deck.
- Planar Guide: This one is kind of a hidden gem, and I just love it in this deck. As a onedrop he triggers Karametra and he is easy to find a recur - unless you activated him. This also brings me to the downside: You can only use him once but it should usually be enough. Note that he his effect includes ALL creatures, which means you have to be careful about other peoples ETB creatures on the board, but also provides utility in sweeping tokens, reseting counters and even foging an alpha strike.
- Myojin of Life's Web: Somehow I really love this card. By himself it's a somewhat overpriced indestructible beater but he enables all kind of tricks. With it in hand you can just put your whole board back onto the table after a rift. Downside is that it's still bad if the Cyclonic Rift happens at the end of your turn and that it's somewhat soft to permission.
In my experience, once opponents know what you are up to, they try very hard to undo it. That's why I moved a bit away from the concept to try and assemble an unpenetrable fortress to a bit more flexible gameplan with more recursion and low cmc "engine creatures" like Yisan, Eldrazi Displacer or Tireless Tracker.
However I still kept the most effective elements for protecteing my board in Avacyn, Archetype and most importantly Gaddock Teeg. The old kithkin advisor does so much work in this deck. He often seriously stalls opponetns when you need time to catch up and, combined with Archetype, I also found him to be a more effective "lock" than Avacyn+Archetype. Not only is it easier to assemble, he also locks down almost all of the sweepers (including exiling and tucking sweeper, but not Cyclonic Rift *sigh*) but also prevents opponents from finding the right answers.
Anyhow, I hope that helps. Once my Selvala, Heart of the Wilds arrives in the mail, I will update my decklist, adding Selvala, Eldritch Evolution and Llanowar Elves. If you have suggestions for cuts, I'll be more than happy to hear them
Thats fair advice and resonates with many of my experiences with this deck. I LOVE this deck though and refuse to give up. I find typically, for me in my group Gaddock Teeg isnt nearly as effective as I had hoped previously, but thats ok. I like chord>planar guide and will try that as defense against cyclonic rift. Hokori is still my main go to aside from DLDromoka versus blue based decks, easily. Playing Iona after a DLDromoka just feels great lol.
I already talked about Selvala and Eldritch Evolution, but the new Cataclysmic Gearhulk is actually something this deck really wanted as well:
Selvala, Heart of the Wilds: I don't necessarily want her for the drawing ability, though I figure that I'm probably more likely to trigger it, than most other deck. What I'm really after here is the very powerful mana ability, which not ony casts Karametra a turn earlier, but will also put me very far ahead, if I get to untap with it. She also fixes any colored mana problems I might encounter.
Cataclysmic Gearhulk: While the ETB effect is far weaker than Tragic Arrogance, I found that there frequently are situations where I fell behind on the board and struggled to regain my footing. This thing can be found with tutors and is easy to reanimate (compared to other sweepers). I previously had Myojin of Cleansing Fire in this spot but found it a bit too clunky.
Eldritch Evolution: This is a fantastic tutor for any deck with a reasonable creature density and in many situations I think it's better than Birthing Pod as it's much more flexible. The most important piece of text to remember when using the card is "or less", as it can be tempting to look among the most expensive creatures you are "allowed" to get, not realizing that something cheaper might be what you really need.
Pendlehaven: I mostly put this in here because it is a legendary land which means that Captain Sisay can get me a land if needed.
About the cuts: While I really like both Myojins, especially the green one, they always felt a little bit too clunky so I decided to cut them. I also cut Rout because Cataclysmic Gearhulk means that It is now much easier to find a sweeper effect via tutors.
I agree on Selvala, she will be an awesome include. I am just waiting for my copy <3 I guess the main difference is I play Captain Sisay at the helm as opposed to Karametra. I find the Legend package to be vital in really cranking out absolutely bonkers board states (which I LOVE). I did include Ghostway and Eerie Interlude and I am waiting for Planar Guide. I think Eerie Interlude and Ghostway plus Planar Guide are exactly what I am looking for versus Cyclonic Rift.
Another possible answer to Cyclonic Rift might be Brisela, Voice of Nightmares. I imagine that with Captian Sisay it's quite easy to assemble. The only thing that irks me about this is that Gisela, the Broken Blade on her own is not very impressive in Commander. Bruna on the other hand is quite nice. I did a quick count and my deck runs 14 targets, not counting mana dorks.
I've found ranger of eos to be pretty great in my Karametra deck. It fetches both sylvan safekeeper and planar guide which sets up a defense against board wipes and spot removal. Adding a caustic caterpillar gives removal and a mistcutter hydra/ Protean Hydra gives a big beater. Casting it and a couple of one drops the turn after karametra comes down is always fantastic. The few games where I have ramped into karametra turn 3 then played the ranger for two dorks and had around ten mana turn five have been very fun. I think it would be worth looking into because you are already running enough one drops to fetch.
Enlisted Wurm would be one of those pet cards I mentiond, but it's also been very solid often getting two lands because of two creatures getting cast and often adding 3-4 devotion. It's really a nice play for the turn after I get Karametra.
