The planeswalker know as The Architect had traveled to the planes of Ravnica for an extended period of time to not only find the secrets behind the Dragon's Maze, but also to recruit more to his cause. Already in alliance with both House Dimir and the Izzet League, word of the Architect's visit reached the ears of the Orzhova Syndicate. Later meeting with the guild's Grand Envoy, Teysa Karlov, she was intrigued by his search and offered her services. As payment, Teysa wish for a source of power they can use for her plan to one day dethrone the Obzedat council.
The Architect gives her an amulet that connects to the deity from the plane of Theros. While she cannot directly communicate with him, Athreos, the God of Passage grants her to manipulate the souls of the planes. However, not nearly to the extent that the God of Passage can do himself. While not directly the commander of her army, she acts as an avatar for the God of Passage's power.
W/B has always been my favorite color combination, so no matter what format I play, I feel necessary to have a deck devoted to it. The EDH format is no different. My best deck was based around Teysa, Orzhov's Scion and was very combo heavy. While I often won either by infinite damage from a Blood Artist or exiling all opponent's libraries with Bitter Ordeal, it did bring a lot of hate amongst my friends when I used it. With the release of Athreos, I feel like it gives me another change to make a better and more enjoyable Orzhov deck that embodied my favorite cards and was still strong.
The deck allows me to finally find a slot for 2 of my favorite cards of all time: Teysa, Envoy of Ghosts and Endless Whispers. When combined together with Athreos, you put yourself into a great political position as anyone will possibly pay a hefty price to keep your creatures gone, or to give them to someone else. All the while, giving yourself a protective barrier or sorts from other players. All of which can lead to a lot of fun situations.
