Our land base is not replaceable with a budget version. Getting color screwed would be frequent. I think a pretty decent aggro Derevi could be built without breaking the bank.
Our land base is not replaceable with a budget version. Getting color screwed would be frequent. I think a pretty decent aggro Derevi could be built without breaking the bank.
I think that might be the reason I am having trouble, I don't have 9 fetches, and only 4 duals.
I am thinking about just making my Derevi a turbo-fog deck, that way I don't die first every game.
Crazy thing happened, I didn't die first this week, but I didn't play my current list, I played a Derevi deck with orbs. I died 3rd(4 player), but it was because one guy had out Moat and Zur's Wierding and payed to make me discard all the good stuff. I still took him to dead with commander damage, but he had the "Angel of not dying" out. The 1st player eventually removed the Angel but not before removing all my orbs/waters/hokori, and building a giant army.
In other news my Maelstrom deck stomped a 5 player game by turn 7 in spite of having Food ChainPithing Needle'd twice. Thanks to Ambi-duck for his help on that deck as he is the Godfather of Wanderer.
Back to Derevi, I was thinking, with infinite mana, and a Deadeye Navigator in play, the somewhat weak land Seaside Haven could be used to draw into a wincon if you did not have Venser/Acidic Slime/etc available. I noticed both you and Ambi-duck have deleted it from your lists(or never had it). Might be a consideration for you since you have DEN.
Trancer, I could be mistaken but, Food Chain should still work because it is a mana ability. I know with Stirk Prospector, you could active it's ability (Sacrifice a goblin: Add R to your mana pool) even if someone tried pithing needle naming it.
I kinda wondered about that, but the guy that cast it was a judge-in-training so I figured he knew what he was doing. I checked with a judge tonight, you are right Pithing Needle has no effect on Food Chain. Thanks for pointing that out to me.
I'd forgotten Seaside Haven existed. I carry as few colorless lands as possible, I don't think Seaside Haven is worth a slot. We can draw with Elvish Visionary, Coiling Oracle, or Azumi and infinite mana. Combat damage triggers would maybe let us draw one or two cards with Seaside Haven but very inefficiently. Too slow. And we need our colored mana. Speaking of blue mana, I just noticed we can get infinite blue with Bloom Tender + Deadeye + Derevi and one of Mystic Gate or Flooded Grove in play. Sometimes I can be pretty slow
So played some games tonight. Wort vs Rith. Won off an early Necro. Then Wort vs Thromok and Rith. Won one of the 4 games on the back of Siege-Gang Commander with Wort. Guess I really need more removal and draw there. Next I played Azusa vs Thromok and Mimeo for 2 games. First game on the back of turn 2 Lotus Cobra into a turn 3 fetch and Azusa, won turn 6. Next game was a terrible, terrible start. A 3 land hand didn't see land till turn 6 but made a late game comeback after the game stalled.
And finally our premier matchup of the night Derevi vs Zur and Mimeo. Mimeo won the dice roll. He plays first, going Turn 1 Forest, Exploration, Underground Sea, Sol Ring. I play Tropical Island into Noble Hierarch. Zur plays a land. Turn 2 Mimeo plays Sylvan Library, land, Timetwister, land, mana dork. I play Gaea's Cradle, Derevi, untap Cradle, Sylvan Library. Zur plays a land. Turn 3 Zur plays Silence during Mimeo's upkeep. Mimeo plays 2 lands and passes the turn. I play land, Somberwald Sage, attack Mimeo with Derevi untap Cradle, cast Glen Elendra Archmage leaving one blue open. Mimeo responds by playing Fact or Fiction. Zur splits the piles into Force of Will in one and 3 lands + Imperial Seal in the other. Mimeo takes the Seal pile. Glen Elendra resolves and I pass the turn. Zur plays Ancient Tomb and is done. Mimeo flashes in Notion Thief at the end of Zur's turn. Turn 4 Mimeo plays 2 lands leaving him with 11 mana open. He plays Sensei's Divining Top. It resolves. He plays Imperial Seal I counter it. He plays Phyrexian Metamorph but Zur Rewinds it. Mimeo plays Snapcaster Mage flashing back Timetwister. Zur responds by playing Necromancy on the Metamorph. Mimeo responds by using High Market on Notion Thief. We debated what happens if 2 players have Notion Thief in play but a third doesn't. Is it correct to say that no one gets to draw after shuffling their hands and graveyards into their library because the replacement effects cancel each other out? Anyhow without Notion Thief in play Timetwister went off and Mimeo passed the turn. I played Wargate for 2 getting Winter Orb, attacked Mimeo with Glen Elendra and Derevi. Untapped Cradle 2x fired off Cylconic Rift overloaded. And that was essentially game. Turn 5 I fired off a Stroke for 9 playing Heliod. Turn 6 Fierce Empath into Sun Titan bringing back Stasis and concessions rolled in. We played one last game which Zur took with Angel's Grace + Ad Nauseam into an infinite Exsanguinate. Derevi took a lot of hate - turn 3 Cyclonic Rift back to my hand, recasted my turn 3 but Zur had gotten to swing getting Necro and a Terminus tucked Derevi, essentially ending my game after Mimeo countered my GSZ. All in all good fun.
This might be way left field but, what do you think of Odric, Master Tactician in here? It seemed like something that could be useful sort of depending on how much priority you give to Gaddock Teeg but he seems like he could provide good evasion and or removal. I sort of have a soft spot for Odric though especially when combining him with teeg but I thought I would just shoot you a left field idea I guess.
Private Mod Note
():
Rollback Post to RevisionRollBack
I have officially moved to MTGNexus. I just wanted to let people know as my response time to salvation decks being bumped is very hit or miss.
Odric is better in a token build as supplemetnary creature control. I don't have enough attackers for Odric to get any work done in here.
I've been looking at cards to help us in a few areas. Cards to break stalemates: Mentor of the Meek, Ephara, Skullclamp. Cards to control the board: Sower of Temptation, Unexpectedly Absent, Linvala, Pithing Needle. Cards to accelerate us: Oracle of Mul Daya, Skyshroud Ranger, Mul Daya Channelers. Sac outlets to protect Derevi: High Market, Diamond Valley, Barrin, Voidmage Prodigy, Phyrexian Altar. Tutors: Trinket Mage
The reasoning behind the choices:
Sower of Temptation - steals an opponent's creature. Don't see Gilded Drake enough
Linvala - no more activated abilities for opponents' creatures
Mentor of the Meek, Ephara, Skullclamp - draw engines. Probably need one more
Skyshroud Ranger - Sakura-Tribe Scout has tested very well I think he has a place
Oracle of Mul Daya - filters off lands
Pithing Needle - stops problem cards like Necro
Unexpectedly Absent - tucks problem card and potentially saves one of our combo pieces against destruction or theft or tuck
High Market/Diamond Valley - sac outlets to protect against tuck theft
Phyrexian Altar/Mul Daya Channelers - combo pieces to make infinite blue and ramp us. Fairly low priority
Trinket Mage - gets Skullclamp, Crypt, Needle
Sadly there aren't enough slots for more than two or three choices, not counting lands
Almost done foiling out the list. The fetchland reprint cannot come soon enough. Debating whether or not to pick up a black border Stasis and Winter Orb. The only white borders I like to see are my duals. However the cost is going to be high and I'll eventually be looking to replace them both with foil versions if and when they are printed. Cmon, Stasis FTV Annihilation!
High Market and Diamond Valley have proven pretty solid. Protection against theft and tuck are key because all our wincons revolve around Derevi. Better to play Derevi one turn later than risk him getting stolen or tucked. The loss of two basic lands appears negligible. I like their inclusion. Barrin has been less pleasing. The problem is he offers no acceleration and doesn't do a whole lot to develop our board. He's more of a defensive piece to bounce opponents' creatures whom cannot be allowed to swing or untap. I guess he can also sac Stasis or an Orb before the end of our last opponents turn and with Sun Titan in play could make those effects one sided. But with Derevi out those pieces are one-sided already and Prophet of Kruphix does a better job accelerating and getting around the non-stasis do not untap effects. What to do? I think I'll probably take Barrin out but haven't figured out a suitable replacement. I've also been wondering if Force of Will is a better option than Arcane Denial. Force doesn't get around Teeg and costs another card but it doesn't require mana which we are really tight on the turn we go off.
edit: Oops forgot a few other tricks with Barrin. Can bounce Gilded Drake. Can bounce Slithermuse. With infinite mana and Kamahl can bounce all lands
Right now I have one of your combo's and one of Ambi-duck's combo's and its making my deck feel bloated, I am debating putting Blue Sun's and Capsize back in and only run your infinite mana combos. Thus far I have only been able to win with lock down, not combo, however I should also be able to afford a Venser this month.

..
Not having Fierce Empath, Gilded Lotus, and a lot of the other supporting pieces I run for combo makes it fairly difficult to get to Deadeye and Bloom Tender. Stroke is the best fit for this list. Blue Sun's UUU requirement is high. If they print another instant speed draw X spell with only one U required I'd put it in
Just threw down more than I wanted to on a NM beta Stasis, black border here we come!
Played two games last night vs Zur, Prossh, and Mimeo. First game turn 1 Birds, turn 2 Derevi, Derevi gets Rapid Hybridized, turn 3 Cradle play Derevi untapping Cradle, playing Fierce Empath for Bane of Progress. Zur plays Windfall, Derevi gets hit with Beast Within. Prossh plays Necromancy on Bane of Progress. We draw 7. Mimeo Reanimates Jin-Gitaxias. Turn 4 I play Derevi untapping Cradle, casting Birthing Pod, Derevi gets hit with Swords to Plowshares, pod Empath to get Venser and Bounce Jin, play GSZ for 3 getting Eternal Witness bringing back Deadeye Navigator. Zur Duresses me, Turn 5 I setup protection and Hokori Prophet. Turn 6 I go off. Second game I start off with Sakura Tribe Scout T1. T2 land, tap scout put another land down, play Derevi untapping Scout play High Market. Zur plays Terminus his turn 3. I sac Derevi. Prossh plays Stranglehold. I get 2 draw engines in place with both Azami and Mystic Remora with protection Lightning Greaves on Gaddock Teeg over the next 3 turns I draw 10-15 cards but nothing helpful. The turn I plan to sac Gaddock Teeg so I can Chord for Bloom Tender EoT then play Deadeye Zur plays Cyclonic Rift overloaded and Mimeo plays an EOT Notion Thief and Windfalls drawing 52. Sadly for Mimeo he doesn't hit Reliquary Tower and discards down to 7. No one else has cards but it becomes 3 vs 1. Mimeo doesn't have what he needs to win so he plays Consecrated Sphinx. He eventually draws all the cards in his library, 2 life with Mana Crypt in play. Zur has drawn 11 with necro and Prossh has just Vampiric Tutord with a pretty large board. Mimeo just played Notion Thief again. I have no board no hand, but have Stasis in play. I topdeck Timetwister. So I play Timetwister. Believed it would kill Mimeo and nuke hands but forgot the graveyard is shuffled in so just gave Mimeo 28 cards. Luckily he lost his roll vs Mana Crypt and perished. It was 3:30AM now, really long game Zur sets up Terminus with Top but doesn't use it as Prossh Pacts for Craterhoof and stomps Zur and I.
Force of Will. It could've saved my hand vs Windfall. Diamond Valley and High Market are pretty nifty. I was getting double tap downs each round the second game so I was useful even if I couldn't do anything of note.
Getting close to the point where I feel we have enough 0 or 1 drops to try the Karoo lands. Added Simic Growth Chamber and Cloud of Faeries. Cut Wooded Bastion and Aura of Silence. The Aura is not bad but felt lacking. I thought of trying Cloud of Faeries after putting it into Animar. The idea of a free creature and combo piece with Deadeye made it a pretty easy include. Being able to drop Cloud of Faeries and Bloom Tender at the same time turn 2 is really good. Being able to untap Cradle, Lotus Vale, or Simic is also a neat trick to generate more mana than we could normally produce. And if there is no board we can cycle it. May drop down to 37 lands it seems like a lot of test draws we're getting flooded
Can you go into the role of the Skyshroud Ranger/etc., I tried them but really didn't see them bringing as much to the table as just a mana dork.
..
Seems as if both have pros/cons. Ranger allows to cheat in 2 valuable lands in one turn. However, lets say you are short a color, a mana dork could help supplement (example, you need double green, but lands you have dont have that combo).
Skyshroud Ranger and Sakura-Tribe Scout allow for extreme early game acceleration. T1, forest play one. T2 land, tap for a land, play Derevi untap, tap drop another land. Weathered Wayfarer and Sisay are both stronger with one of them in play. Getting to Cradle allows us to produce massive amounts of mana early. Hitting a draw engine will then put us far ahead of the table. And the last reason to include them is the Karoo lands. The Karoo lands turn from junk to fantastic plays. The drawback is if we don't have enough gas to fuel Skyshroud Ranger and Sakura-Tribe Scout they serve little purpose. A 2 land opening hand with one of them isn't very good it would be better with a normal mana dork, so don't keep that hand
Great deck! I've been looking at your list for a while but I haven't really had anything to say or add. Just a few quick questions:
What are you Natural Ordering for?
Why Stroke of Genius over Sphinx's Revelation?
How well does Fauna Shaman perform for you? Elvish Mystic over one of your land dorks? (Ranger/Scout mentioned in post above this)
What do you usually get with Fierce Empath?
Why Bane of Progress over Austere Command? Does the fact that it hits for Derevi triggers outweigh the more narrow use?
Why Pact over Force?
Are Derevi and Rafiq really dissimilar enough to constitute having two Bant decks?
A lot of questions I know, but I'm just looking for simple answers Always looking to improve and discuss with fellow Derevi players!
PS. You mispelled Worldly Tutor in your decklist (I do this soooo often!)
My question is, do you guys actually own these $300-$400 cards(Time Twister), or proxy them?
So many lists looks like they are millionaires and can buy any card they want, Ambi-Duck owns 20 Mana Crypts.. everybody owns a few Mana Drains and Time Twisters. I had to practically kill babies to get just one beat up Mana Drain, and you guys got one in every deck.
My list is 100% what I have in the deck, which is why I have few fetch lands, and probably will not get any more. They are expensive.

Natural Order into Prophet, Fierce Empath, Bane of Progress, Eternal Witness. I feel the absence of SP but it's still pretty decent
Stroke costs less colored mana. Plus it can also be used as a finisher
Fauna Shaman has been very good. At worst it draws removal, and at best it gets us to our win conditions. Plus it can swing.
Don't need too many only-green producing dorks. We've already got green we usually need another color. The Ranger and Scout have higher ceilings for fast starts, so I've grown very fond of them.
Fierce Empath into Deadeye, Bane of Progress, Elesh Norn, Kamahl
Bane of Progress can be tutored for more easily than Austere Command. He can also swing.

Derevi is a unique general. Rafiq can't compare sadly. Retired my Rafiq.
