I think you've lumped in my two posts together and made some assumptions. Temur Sabertooth doesn't fill the same slot as Man O' War or Shrieking Drake or Dream Stalker. I was saying those cards are better than Ambush Krotiq, because early
No, bounce creatures are there to enable combos or to reactivate ETB effects. Putting an extra counter on Animar is largely trivial.
Mid to late game sure. But several times turn 4 I've cast Shrieking drake twice to add a couple of early counters to Animar, or I used Sylvan ranger to make sure I had my third land for animar then turn 4 Dream Stalker bounce the Sylvan Ranger cast him to get my turn 4 land drop, or even in some cases Man o' War to make sure i don't miss a second straight land drop. That's why it's better to have those cards over Ambush Krotiq.
Temur Sabertooth I would consider over equilibrium or in addition to as some redundancy. Yes it costs more, and 1GGG on the first turn isn't great but after that it's only 1G. plus to use Equilibrium the turn it comes down you need 2UU and that doesn't include the casting cost of what ever creature you want to use to trigger it's effect. It's bounce your creature at instant speed which means it can be used defensively as well. It triggers Animar, it's tutorable. It can survive a board sweep and save at least one other creature. Is it perfect? no, but it's nowhere near as bad as you think it is.
Atarka's cool, but she's just a dumb beater. Seems like a better fit in Naya or Jund, with power related or dragon generals (Mayael and Prossh come to mind).
Pilgrim of the Fires seems decent. Potentially free 6/4 with first-strike and trample seems neat, don't know what I'd take out for it but it fits Animar's abilities.
Sages of the Anima is interesting it's not a card you want to be cast too soon unless you have a lot of put a land into play creatures(you also get screwed by land destruction so depends on your meta)
Kiki isn't necessary to combo, but does open up another combo route. However stomaching the triple R cost is a huge drag, and would require serious work on the mana base to make work. It's highly unlikely you'd be able to go Animar t3, Kiki t4 or 5, which is what you'd want to be doing. Couple that with the prohibitive price tag and you have loser.
Sages is alright, but we usually have a huge demand for mana ideally playing a land a turn up to t8 or 9. You'd have to have a pre-Animar curve somewhere around 2.2 to justify the Sages methinks.

I'd love to hear thoughts on my Animar build. The preface of the deck is that it is a straight value deck. It is by no means combo-centric. I'm not to keen on combo decks (outside of anything competative like Modern or Legacy). I just don't like playing the same game over and over again, so I tried to stray away from the combo side of Animar. There are some notable exclusions from my build. One of the most glaring cards missing is Deadeye Navigator. I participate in a meta that abhors that card. I like to respect my friends desires and do not play with it, but omgwtfbbq if I did. It'd be insanely busted in my build, but I digress. I do not play with Craterhoof Behemoth. Wouldn't be a bad wincon in the deck, but I myself do not like the card. I think it leads to lazy wins (e.g. Avenger/Craterhoof). [And by lazy win I mean tutor for your wincon every game. I could Survival and find Avenger/Hoof for the win, but I feel as thought I'd do that every game to close it out. I find that it takes away the 1 or 2 hour slugfest if I could just found the two cards 1 hour earlier.] Another card I don't play with is Vorinclex, Voice of Hunger. I also do not like this card. I don't like the punisher mechanic built into it. I dislike it preventing my opponents playing Magic with me when that was their goal from the beginning. It also punishes the person who deals with the card. But these are just my own opinions of these cards. You don't have to agree with me on them.
These are just some thoughts on my deck.
This deck is primarily filled with creatures that have the phrase "enters the battlefield..." and support creatures. I just got a foil Shaman of the Great Hunt last week and have found it to be a boon. It's super easy to cast (1 R mana), provides value for Animar and his minions, and is a great mana sink that gives me card advantage. I drew 14 cards last time I played with and I could have activated it two more times afterwards. Straight gravy. There are times where I find that Surrak Dragonclaw just feels underwhelming or is taking up a slot at times, but he is performing now that someone built a Grand Arbiter Augustin IV UW control deck. I've also had the sweet interaction of my opponent Cryptic Commands my Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker, and with that on the stack flash in Surrak Dragonclaw. I also got a pack foil of that guy, so he is here to stay. I just added a Shamanic Revelation for the lifegain. The card draw can get me out of a pinch, but can also lead to getting blowout by a Terminus. I'm hoping it performs well. On to cards I plan on picking up Gaea's Cradle. That is a future endeavor, or if I'm lucky an awesome birthday present I probably plan on picking up the filter lands Flooded Grove, Cascade Bluffs, and Fire-Lit Thicket. Oh and obviously Volcanic Island. Maybe I can open up another promo Ugin somehow... I'd also like to pick up an Earthcraft. Seems nuts in theory. My last purchase of the deck will probably be an Imperial Recruiter. That guy is the nutterbutters.
[EDIT] Just got a foil Korean Shamanic Revelation. Will probably become part of the deck now because swag. Also opened a foil Korean Flamerush Rider, so now I'm tempted to test it. It seems like it fits my build because of all my 187 effects.
Even though the free mana rocks give you a faster Animar, they are counter productive as they don't put counters on Animar. You'd do better with mana dorks like in jaxck deck. They still give you value late game opposed to the mana rock which won't help you accelerate Animar late game.
What are your guys thoughts on Kruphix himself, he seems to be on the lower end of things i wanna rush out of my hand usually. I know he is great when animar isn't around.. Thoughts?

Kruphix is good, but as you said is really only optimal when Animar is not on the table. As such the card becomes a meta decision. Do your regular opponents' run enough hate to keep Animar off the table consistently? If so, then increase your own hate and run Kruphix. If not, then just play Animar. I play in quite a competitive meta and I generally find that Kruphix is unnecessary.
so i did my best to read through the entire primer and saw no mention of pattern of rebirth, (though i very well may have missed it) have you ever considered it for the tutor or wrath detterent slot? i actually chose it over alluren. i've been piloting animar for about a year now and have found it to be a miracle of a card. also i've been using sylvok replica as torpor orb protection, have you tried this as opposed to the vigilante? and if so was cloudstone curio the deciding factor?

URGANIMARURG In the folklore of its plane, the Animar is the ultimate source of all life—the seed from which all creation grows. In the presence of Animar, crops blossom and herds thrive, and the wake of its wanderings determines the course of the seasons.
Pattern of Rebirth isn't a creature. I'd much rather run something like Whisperwood Elemental. As it stands wraths aren't actually that threatenig to Animar. If you intend to go the combo route, wraths are too slow to interact with you, counters would be better. If you intend to go the aggro/voltron route then again, they should be too slow to interact with you. Haste providers are probably the best anti-wrath cards you can run.
You need at least two (ideally three or four) ways to deal with Torpor Orb. A good artifact deck can get the Orb oit consistently turns 2-4, which really shuts us down. Currently I have Replica, Trygon Predator, Ancient Grudge, and Hull Breach, as well as several creatures which ignore the effects of Torpor Orb. I would like to run the Vigilante, it's now just a matter of finding a good slot.
The best part about Curio is that it is completely non-interactive for your opponents. The only real way they have to deal with it is with direct destruction or countering, which just reduces the pressure on Animar. No matter which vein of Animar you intend to play (Combo, Aggro, or Voltron) the deck is all about assembling a critical mass of threats. Due to the nature of Animar, our threats are actually most threatening before they enter the battlefield, when you cast them. The question between Vigilante and Replica thus comes down to efficieny (Replica) versus increased power (Vigilante). But as I said earlier, why not just run both?
lol, wish i could say wraths wernt a problem for me but that's just not true. its such an issue i run 3 real counters and 2 creature counters and pattern of rebirth to help get back on board after a board wipe. like how can you be faster than a 4 mana spell? this format can realistically be prepared to wrath off a sol ring on turn 2. pattern of rebirth isn't a creature, but neither is cord of calling. i understand that there's an immense difference between the cards but with pattern of rebirth its like wrath-eldrazi, block-eldrazi, sac wild cantor- kiki jiki. its just good

Birds of Paradise, Bloom Tender, Wood Elves, Animar himself, all put you ahead of a wrath by either forcing it (in Bloom Tender or Animar's case) or putting you a mana up (anyone who Wraths a bird... actually that can be a good play against my deck). The key with Wraths, like any removal, is to force your opponent to use it while investing as few resources as possible. I've blown out opponents by getting them to use all their removal on early plays, then dropping Great Whale into Mercurial Pretender. The next game the guy didn't wrath until he saw anything over 7, by which point it was too late and I could had the game counter-locked (Mercurial Pretender really is a good card). Propoganda is more of a threat than Damnation.
My deck is pretty aggro-y (I win probably 50% of games with Animar's general damage) what with the taper and +1/+1 counter theme. The key card that distinguishes the combo decks is Cloudstone Curio, so with that card gone the deck becomes very aggro. You'd probably want to add more in the way of haste enablers and efficient users/producers of power (which can be counters or some other kind of pump). Artifact creatures are absolutely worth including, you'd probably also want to have a look at my artifacts list on page 31.
wood elves puts you ahead of a wrath? so what is that supposed to be a turn 3 wood elves following a turn 2 animar? so you end with a 2/2 animar a land? or if you use the land and play a creature now you have 3 guys. then you get wrathed. ? what exactly where you ahead of? ahead in mana? i hardly see how thats relevant when all your creatures are abt to die. though i do agree with you on pressuring the opponent into wrathing, however if those 3 creatures were my turn 3 board and i was wrathed the following turn, that wrath realistically set me back to turn 6. i guess what im really saying is your mana dudes probably dont mitigate the wrath issue at all in any way and no deck is consistently faster than a card that can commonly be played as early as turn 2. even if you are ahead in mana, it's not a race. its about the precise amount of resources neccesary to cast the spell that turns the game in your favor.

Hi all, I know this is rather late, but life has been quite busy for me. Reviews of Commander 2014 and Fate Reforged. A bit briefer than usual, but better than avoiding getting it down in writing any longer.
I think Gravesifter will be a fine replacement for Deadwood Treefolk. I think the only time Deadwood Treefolk is superior is when you're facing a Torpor Orb, as you can get the leave play trigger to recur a creature. Otherwise Gravesifter is bigger for the same body and is likely to recur two or three creatures unless you really need something obscure to win.
Lifeblood Hydra – X cost has synergy with Animar, thought triple green is a bit painful. Death trigger is comparable to Sphinx's Revelation and gets around Torpor Orb, if it’s an issue.
Song of the Dryads – Strong removal for green, but probably not right in this deck.
Thunderfoot Baloth – essentially an overrun effect on a creature which isn’t too bad if you’re playing an aggro build.
UUUBLUEUUU
Breaching Leviathan – can enable an alpha strike against nonblue decks, but it does also affect our nonblue creatures. Enjoys a heavy discount, but not sure it’s worth the effort to make this work.
Dulcet Sirens – Morph creatures are always interesting to consider. This one can force combat, which makes for a political game, but often Animar is simply too dominating to elicit a political effect on opponents.
RRRREDRRR
Dualcaster Mage – being able to copy an instant or sorcery spell is a nice ability to be strapped onto a creature. I’m not sure it’s worth the double red cost in this deck, but it’s a unique effect and may find a place in some metas.
XXXARTIFACTS and LANDSXXX
Arcane Lighthouse – if your meta includes a lot of shroud and/or hexproof, which give you issues, this is a relatively safe way of slotting in some meta hate. Colourless mana only is an issue, but at least this can be found with Crop Rotation.
Flamekin Village – haste enabler on a land. Likely to enter the battlefield tapped however given the creature breakdown in the deck. Could replace a mountain, maybe.
Fate Reforged – additions for Animar
GGGGREENGGG
Abzan Beastmaster – personally I find it too slow and conditional, but plenty of decks want Dark Confidant and it is relatively easy to use this to draw extra cards.
Destructor Dragon – death trigger gets around Torpor orb, if that is causing you grief, but it does mean you need some kind of sacrifice enabler for this to act as removal. It’s a bit harder to abuse than Enter the Battlefield effects.
Sandsteppe Mastodon – I’ve seen some people suggest that Bolster is good in Animar, but here is the problem. If Animar has no counters, this costs 7 to add 6 counters to Animar. If Animar has 4 counters, this costs 3, but Animar gains a counter on creature cast, which puts him out of contention to receive 5 bonus counters and they more than likely go somewhere useless. I’d rather run Bond Beetle as a counter enabler.
Shamanic Revelation – lets you dig a fair way for a win condition, if you’re already ahead on board. Don’t get me wrong, this will draw plenty of cards, but only if you’ve already committed heavily to the board. I’d rather cast Prime Speaker Zegana at that point.
Temur Sabertooth – Expensive activated ability, but potentially useful against board wipes, as it saves itself and gives creatures back to your hand to cast again.
Whisperwood Elemental – Another useful creature to defend against board wipes as this has a free ability that replaces anything you lose with a manifest. Manifest isn’t too bad in Animar, because with Cloudstone Curio you have options to return manifested cards to your hand before casting them with a discount.
Yasova Dragonclaw – we don’t really want to be pumping her up to maximise her theft potential, and we don’t want to be using so much mana stealing opponents’ creatures. She isn’t for this deck, but could be an interesting Commander in her own right.
UUUBLUEUUU
Aven Surveyor – a bounce creature always has potential, but this one is too pricey mana wise for the other useless option. If you want to pay UU just go with Æther Adept.
Marang River Prowler – May be worth playing alongside Skullclamp. With Animar on the field (and 2 counters) this becomes 1U: Put a counter on Animar and draw two cards, which isn’t too shabby.
Reality Shift – Not a card for Animar deck, but damn it is fine removal. This is going to be annoying to play against.
RRRREDRRR
Shaman of the Great Hunt – Expensive card draw, but repeatable. This guy should always replace himself at the very least. If you have any of the infinite mana combos going, he will let you draw your deck. Might be too conditional, but easier to activate that Abzan Beastmaster. He turns on his own Ferocious ability barring power reduction shenanigans.
That's all from me for now. I'm happy to see so much discussion and lists being posted in the thread!
It seems my contents links have all broken at some point. I'll see if I can fix them up. I haven't had a chance to play much EDH in the last few months, but I'm going to undertake some pretty major changes to my decklist for a change of pace and then try to get in some games. I will ensure my current build list is kept somewhere and update the Primer once I've had a moment to sit down and tinker. Thanks everyone for your continued support
The RG dragon is Atarka, World Render.
Maybe not so bad, but not a staple IMHO.
P.S.: I think that I will try also Temur Sabertooth

In the folklore of its plane, the Animar is the ultimate source of all life—the seed from which all creation grows. In the presence of Animar, crops blossom and herds thrive, and the wake of its wanderings determines the course of the seasons.

My deck is pretty aggro-y (I win probably 50% of games with Animar's general damage) what with the taper and +1/+1 counter theme. The key card that distinguishes the combo decks is Cloudstone Curio, so with that card gone the deck becomes very aggro. You'd probably want to add more in the way of haste enablers and efficient users/producers of power (which can be counters or some other kind of pump). Artifact creatures are absolutely worth including, you'd probably also want to have a look at my artifacts list on page 31.
