It is possible, but I don't think it will be very effective. You need to dedicate a lot of slots if you want a creature toolbox, but you also need to dedicate a lot of slots if you want to support a spellslinger theme. 99 card slots isn't enough for that.
Sonik has a good budget list in his primer, so you might want to start out with that to learn the nuances of the deck, then just slip in the spell toolbox cards that you want.
Hi there.
I ordered a Riku of Two Reflections after reading your tread, and I am blazing with excitement to start building a deck around him, however I would like to ask you a question: is it possible to build a Riku deck that is a halfway between spellsinger and creature toolbox? I would like to explore his Izzet side a bit more since my Kresh deck is a zoo and a wild garden.
Thank you,
TSZ:
You could do something token-y. There are plenty of creatures, instants and sorceries that produce tokens, or pump them. I can honestly say that the spellslinger build is all kinds of fun, and effective. I've been tempted to go back to it, and possibly even write a primer that gets updated, since DramaTurtle has been absent for quite a while. (Similar thoughts on Zedruu after Dechs took down his Zedruu primer, although my Zedruu build was heading in an entirely different direction.)
Goblin Welder, Nephalia Smuggler, Ulvenwald Tracker, Fauna Shaman, Birthing Pod, Crystal Shard, Mimic Vat, any land etc.
Depends on the deck of course but I think there are more than enough targets. I can see the problem making room for it though as per usual with EDH decks
So.... Sylvan Primordial got banned :/ What do we do now? Suddenly I have no idea what to tutor for with a turn 4 Natural Order. I'd really like a good ramp spell, but at the same time that slot is also dedicated to artifact/enchantmen removal...
Woodfall Primus:
Might need to add this and Oran-Rief, the Vastwood again to get some sort of abuseable non-creature removal, but what I really want is something that sweeps a lot of stuff in one go.
Bane of Progress:
Removes my own stuff too and is redundant in multiples. Removes a lot more than Woodfall Primus though, so it might get the spot anyways.
Seedguide Ash:
Absolutely no synergy with the deck whatsoever, but it ramps hard (if someone is silly enough to attack us).
@Vind: Turn 4 Natural Order into Terastodon reads "remove target player from the game." I do miss using Sylvan, though. I'm not sad he got banned, but I miss him.
@Matt:Seems a bit janky, especially since you have to have Riku out for it to work.
Are these lists being updated as new sets come out? I can see progenitor mimic and stuff like that which would leave me to believe that they are? All of them? Or just the first decklist. The reason I ask is because sylvan primordial is still in the list. Which I thought was banned recently?
+Curse of the Swine
I can play it early to sculpt the board, or to exile stupid things. I find that I get more use out of the targeted removal from Curse of the Swine over All Is Dust's blanket permanent removal. Plus it's an exile effect which we don't have too much of. Play it early and recur it with Eternal Witness or Loaming Shaman + Mystical Tutor.
+Prophet of Kruphix
Looking for a replacement for this card, it's been under-performing, and in order to get it "online" I need sweet card draw via Consecrated Sphinx. It also needs to not die to removal.
What do you guys think about Scourge of Fleets? It's a 6/6 for 5UU that has an ETB that bounces creatures with toughness equal to the amount of Islands you control. With our ramp and land suite, we're looking at a best case scenario of 7-8 toughness (8 if you've had Vesuva copy something that's an Island.) The floor is the two base islands you use to cast it bouncing things with two toughness. But what about Tooth and Nail entwined grabbing both Ixidron and Scourge of Fleets? We shouldn't have to use two cards to make another card better, so I'm open to other suggestions. Or am I not making the most of the Prophet?
I'm pretty sure your just not making the most use of Prophet of Kruphix as when I drop it, it tends to put me far enough ahead that few others can catch up if I can keep it out a turn or two. It has amazing synergy with riku, azami, and zegana.
Prophet of Kruphix is absolutely bonkers in this deck. I usually win the turn after I play it, if I have at least some sort of action to combine it with. Sphinx of Uthuun or something similar is usually enough.
I recently found myself battling a combo version of Riku (spellslinging with Mana Flare and tons of x-spells such as Blue Sun's Zenith and Epic Experiment. The guy usually won turn 6 or so). The problem is that any global answer to his deck also hurts my own deck. MLD would kill my deck, more removal would deviate it from the toolbox approach I love, I don't have white for Ethersworn Canonist or Gaddock Teeg (Which would kill his deck but only slow myself down), and so on. Is there a green creature that prevents you from being targeted? Any other suggestions on how to solve this?
Prophet seems better suited in certain builds. It allows for other 5 drops like kiki and riku to be played on your opponents EOT. The fewer sorceries or combat based instants you have the Better this becomes as well. Fact or fiction and other dig spells give you the gass for prophet to dump.
The m15 genesis hydra should get a spot in this build I think too.
Here is my updated deck list. I added Clever Impersonator, Dig Through Time, and Treasure Cruise. Dualcaster Mage would be a good addition or maybe Purphoros, God of the Forge, but I am trying to save up for a Natural Order right now. There has not been much activity in this thread recently. So hopefully, we can start some more meaningful discussion. Also, my deck is lacking Deadeye Navigator because it got banned in my local meta.
Let me know what you all think. What I should add. What I should take out. So on and so forth.
I have been looking to build something new for awhile and have been looking at something that isn't played around my store. I wanted to try a RUG(temur) build and have just been looking around at various lists to get some ideas. I saw your deck here and was interested.
I have all of these cards, either in a deck or in a box waiting to be in a deck, including a natural order. If you had no budget and could add anything to this list, what would you add?

I am pretty happy with my list. The only money card that I can think of that I am lacking is Sneak Attack. However, I feel like Sneak Attack is only good when you have Riku out because you don't have to sacrifice the copy you make with him. But Riku gets killed so quickly that I am not sure how effective Sneak Attack would be in reality.
There are some other expensive RUG cards that I am not running like Mana Drain and Jace, the Mind Sculptor. I actually don't have any counterspells in my deck (kinda odd for U-based EDH). I own a JtMS, but he doesn't fit the Riku strategy (you can't copy him). People run him in Maelstrom Wanderer though.
There a bunch of good inexpensive RUG cards that I am not running like Deadeye Navigator (banned at my LGS) and infinite combos that I try to avoid (e.g. Palinchron and Zealous Conscripts)
PS: I just got my Natural Order last week. I am excited to get the opportunity to play it.

Seems worth a spot being only UG which makes it easily copiable with Riku. Plus it allows shenanigans with her untap ability.

-Wood Elves
I don't find my ramp lacking after cutting this 1/1 for 3.
-Anger
I guess I'm not utilizing haste as much as I thought I would. Though in more aggro centered decks, this would fare well.
-Sylvan Primordial
RIP
-All Is Dust
+Purphoros, God of the Forge
Tooth and Nail entwined with Avenger of Zendikar and a bunch of lands in play.

Natural Order this into play. This card is 3x Beast Within and a 9/9 Body for 8 Mana. VALUE. 18 mana worth (sort of)

So any thoughts on Kruphix, God of Horizons or Keranos, God of Storms in riku. I think they might have a place.
