After another MtG-heavy weekend, impressions were exchanged as usual about our respective decks, i.e, how much of a pain in the rear that UW Augustine deck is, how much of a nuisance is that Child making everything explode when dying... and, again, how boring combo decks can get on a multiplayer EDH environment. Arguments were tossed back and forth, until a friend of mine hit the spot when he said:
The thing with combo decks is that they just sit there and do nothing, until bam, they just pull a win.
That's why I try to take seemingly harmless players off the table first.
That prompted me to go over my current build, which is quite like Gref's most recent iteration but emphasizing ramp rather than discarding effects. The loads of counters, board wipes and spot removals it has now are geared, we all agree, towards protecting our own play and interfering with others' while we prepare our move.
This friend and I had another discussion about it after our last session. I reflected that going counter-combo with slivers was the logical result of getting consistently subjected to board-wipes whenever I had 3+ slivers on the table, whichever they were, even if they were just bare, simple, lowly 1/1s or 2/2s. And yet I find myself following down the path that led other people here to dismantle their decks because they were so deadly, efficient and cutthroat that nobody would sit on a table with them. Isn't one of the most important things about EDH is that it's supposed to be fun and has to be kept fun for everyone involved?
I have a nagging cuestion, then: would it be possible to build an aggressive, resilient and powerful slivers deck, whichever its general is, without turning it into another cutthroat scare?

Unfortunately I'd say no.
People are scared of slivers no matter how you build it.
I have so many win cons I try to play my deck different all the time. That said, people don't care, they are just scared.

basically this. if anyone sees the deck go off regardless of win con it's a wrap. 5c is just super degenerate in what it can do. you could possibly change to a 3c or 4c general with strong enough slivers and try to play quietly. it wouldn't be as nasty as any deck with queen in it.
this is why i switched to 1v1 though. it is expected that decks are going to be built more competitevly and a lot of the "fun factor" of edh is just not there. i think its more fun than* declaring my general and then playing a handicap match against multiple players.
If I had to offer up one strategy for playing slivers I would say play another deck :). Slivers are really for the sadists that love to torture themselves over deck building and fine tuning.
The sliver archetype rewards planning and follow through. I can not stress that enough.
All three methods are viable. None of the three will guarantee victory.
Combo
Combo is extremely powerful and extremely fragile. The easiest way to victory via combo usually involves Mana Echoes and Sliver Queen and some sort of "game ender". The game ending cards are often some form of utility sliver. Popular choices include; Necrotic Sliver, Acidic Sliver, and Cautery Sliver.
More often than not a combo deck is loaded with tutors, card draw, mass and spot removal, and counter back up.
*Sliver Overlord can be played as an alternative general for combo. This is much slower as opposed to playing Queen, but allows you to assemble your combo pieces.
Aggro
Aggro is straightforward and simple. Sliver Legion shines here. As each sliver hits the field they get juiced up a bit. This effectively increases the potential threat value on every sliver. Aggro lists are certain to see the highest concentration of slivers compared to Combo or Voltron lists. Clones and Changelings should also find a few spots in the deck.
Tutors, ard draw, spot removal, and counter backup also belong.
*Sliver Overlord can be played here and again, assemble your swarm. Slower for sure, but much more methodical. Relies less on the top deck.
^Sliver Queen can be played here to pump out a token or two every turn and eventually overrun your opponent.
Voltron
Voltron builds are great for putting your opponent on the spot. Sliver Overlord when resolved, puts your opponent on a three turn clock. If that wasn't enough, you can tutor up protection, evasion, and buffing to try and speed things up.
Tutors, top deck manipulators, counter backup, mass and spot removal, and light card draw will see play here.
*Sliver Legion can be used here. Usually accompanied by slivers providing out right evasion, Legion gets big enough to swing through for game in a couple of turns.
Here is my Sliver breakdown for Crux's prime. This is currently a WIP. (dont copy this line lol)
A whopping 76 named slivers populate the planes. A deck can only have 100 cards. Only the strong survive. This is especially true for slivers.
In alphabetical order here is the brood according to me:
A
Acidic Sliver
2/2 for BR with an ability only a Mother could love. Outside of Queen combo decks, Acidic Sliver is straight up bad. Legion aggro doesn't like to sacrifce dudes and Overlord toolbox can't find a job for him.
Combo: 10/10 (combo ender)
Aggro: 1/10 (a body is a body)
Voltron: 0/10
Armor Sliver
2/2 for 2W with an expensive and irrelevant ability. If you are playing paper, use this guy as a drink coaster.
Combo: 0/10
Aggro: 1/10 (a body is a body)
Voltron: 0/10 (prime slivers are 7/7)
B
Barbed Sliver
2/2 for 2R with an ability only slightly more relevant than it's white counterpart. If you have enough mana on tap to take advantage of this sliver, it is because you went off and won via combo.
Combo: 0/10
Aggro: 2/10 (might win a game)
Voltron: 1/10 (might win a game)
Basal Sliver
2/2 for 2B that helps combo go off. Even then, a lot of pieces need to be in place for Basal Sliver to acutally be the catalyst for a combo victory.
Combo: 7/10
Aggro: 1/10 (a body)
Voltron: 0/10
Battering Sliver
4/4 for 5R that enables trample. Awful. For 6 mana someone better be thinking, "damn it...". This is not that card. Outshined by it's cheaper relative Horned Sliver, Battering Sliver will not find a home here.
Blade Sliver
2/2 for 2R that offers a passive +1/+0 to all slivers. Very important for aggro variants relying on the top deck for a bit more damage. Helpful in voltron when you need a bit more beef. Bad in combo.
Combo: 0/10
Aggro: 9/10
Voltron: 5/10
Bonesplitter Sliver
2/2 for 3R that offers a passive +2/+0 to all slivers. Unfortunately, mana is a luxury here and it is only spent on things of value. Blade Sliver comes out sooner with the same base P/T. Pass on this unless you need an alternative.
Brood Sliver
3/3 for 4G and it looks good. On paper. This could help aggro get it's swarm on, but even then it is slow. Brood Sliver does little to change the game for combo and voltron.
Combo: 0/10
Aggro: 5/10 (relevant but slow)
Voltron: 0/10
C
Cautery Sliver
2/2 for RW and great for Queen combo decks. Enough said.
Clot Sliver
1/1 for 1B that saves lives. Valuable in a format infested with board sweeps and spot removal. Great way to protect high value slivers from death (most of the time). Somewhat mana intensive.
Combo: 1/10
Aggro: 8/10
Voltron: 5/10
Crypt Sliver
1/1 for 1B that saves lines. Was that an echo? Crypt Sliver is just a hair from being a perfect clone of Clot Sliver. Having to tap down a sliver is somewhat restrictive and in some cases costly. I prefer Clot over Crypt.
Combo: 1/10
Aggro: 7/10
Voltron 5/10
Crystalline Sliver
2/2 for WU the offers Shroud to all slivers. Good luck finding something like this for any other tribe. Almost all sliver abilities do not target other slivers, and therefore Crystalline Sliver is very valuable. There may be times where this protection interferes with other cards in your deck.
Combo: 9/10
Aggro: 9/10
Voltron: 9/10
D
Darkheart Sliver
2/2 for BG that allows the sacrifice of slivers for a measly 3 life. Bad. I usually die before I start sacrificing other slivers to live.
Combo: 0/10
Aggro: 1/10 (a body)
Voltron: 0/10
Dementia Sliver
3/3 for 3UB the lets you play a guessing game in an attempt to get a card out of the opponents hand. Terrible. This sliver is way too slow for what it does and what it does isn't enough.
Combo: 0/10
Aggro: 0/10
Voltron: 0/10
Dormant Sliver
2/2 for 2GU that renders you slivers inert and triggers a draw upon entering the battlefield. If this sliver is played properly it is extremely strong. Combo can draw out their deck if it is in play. In aggro it can generate the steam needed to get the swarm going. In voltron it isn't as useful as you can just search for your sliver of choice and there is less emphasis on the draw.
Primer is almost ready now... Gref, the moment your sliver breakdown is complete, I'm probably editing it in right away to replace my own, or at the very least melding each other. I like your way much better.
Commenting non-sliver picks is what needs to be done ATM.
Going to try my best to get to writing up the non-slivers.
It's been crazy for me as of late.

Gref, since you're into discard more than I am, I would welcome your suggestions about nice cards to fatten that section a little.
You might want to consider running Harsh Mercy. Sure, it sucks against another tribal, but against anything else, it's still a board wipe...and it will never ever affect your own creatures too.

I used to, but ended up ditching it because it never resulted in removing critical creatures from play; everyone would just pick the creature type most important to them (or sometimes most important to someone else, politics and all). That was before All is Dust was released, and it promptly took its spot.
I'm adding it to the suggested cards section; maybe it works better for someone else
I want to start building a sliver EDH deck for casual play. Ive spent the last few days looking over other sliver builds and I'm trying to throw something together. Since it's casual, I wont be buying a ridiculous mana base for it, so keep that in mind.
For the mana base i have the tri lands in there ATM, as they are cheap and not terrible(?) mana fixing. I also have a few signets in there, although Im not sure what I should keep or which ones I should use.
I know the list is currently a few cards too many, I was looking to thin it out a bit and determine where I should go with it. Its very "first drafty".
If this is the wrong area to ask for critque, let me know and I'll start a new thread or something.
- I'd straight away replace Clot Sliver with Crypt Sliver to begin with. Same cost and much less mana intensive. On second thought, keep it that way. No hassle with Crystalline Sliver that way.
- You may want to think of changelings as well. Taurean Mauler, Chameleon Colossus and Mirror Entity are the best of the lot, aside from Amoeboid Changeling. The Mauler can grow quickly into something insanely large, and the Entity can win games for you if you have enough mana.
- Whoooooa... you just made me open my eyes wide with Descendants' Path. I'm SO adding this to the recommended card list. And rest assured I'm going to toy with it when I decide to build my aggro decklist.
- Primal Surge made me smirk. Another thing worth toying with.

Exactly this. It never worked the way you wanted it to work, so it got the boot.

@Arekku: I just recalled I seriously wanted to run Lurking Predators back when I had a more aggro-ish approach. You should try that one out--you run creatures by the truckload.

- Made the change on the Clot / Crypt
- Took out Spined for Bonesplitter. I like Opaline I think. Worst case is I play test it and change it later.
- Door of Destinies is my coat of arms. Unless you think coat is better?
- I'll look into those. Added Taurean Mauler, not sure about Mirror Entity.
- Descendents' Path is one of the first cards I considered playing in the deck, especially with my creature count this high. Even if you flip over a 2 cmc sliver, you still get a body on the field. Worst case is you flip a needed non creature. Ive done that with other decks before.
- Primal surge is going to be sick in this deck. Ive only got 9 cards in the deck that wouldn't get on the field. I should get atleast 10 permanants every time I play it. I'm not sure if it would work in every sliver deck though.
Any comments about the Mana base? I already have a Cavern of Souls and Command Tower, but im at a loss of where to go with the rest of it. The trilands looked decent for my needs though, since they were cheap. I could also get ahold of city of brass and gemstone mine and the like. Shocklands may be added after RTR.
I guess I have a few questions:
Mana Rocks - Which Signets (if any) Should I use? I own atleast 1 of all of them.
Creatures - Do I have too many? Any I can thin out? I do currently have way too many cards in the deck for it to be considered an EDH deck.
As it stands, after trimming it up a bit, could this deck work? I ask because its a pretty big investent for me to buy all these cards. Id be happy if it wins occaisonaly or I atleast get to do some shenanigans.
You have no idea how thankful I am for you helping me out with this.

Thanks.

I'd straight away replace Clot Sliver with Crypt Sliver to begin with. Same cost and much less mana intensive. On second thought, keep it that way. No hassle with Crystalline Sliver that way.- Also, I'd try to make room for Blade Sliver and Bonesplitter Sliver. Since we have a lot of slivers, might as well make them as hard-hitting as we can. (I'd ditch Spined Sliver and Opaline Sliver.)
- Have you considered Coat of Arms?
