i'm not sure the copy triggers confusion in the rank, but if it does it's a nonbo. either you choose to kill the real norin, and give the token to the opponent, or you sacrifice the token, and the ability fizzles in resolution.
My own rules when building a Commander deck:
1) Underrated general that I can build around but the deck must work without him/her too.
2) Every card must be legal in both banlists.
3) No infinite combo that could win (and ruin) instantly a multiplayer game.
4) Synergy at all costs; stay on theme, avoid goodstuff.
Yea I know what you mean. I don't think it's an auto-include but it's definitely one of the more interesting things spoiled. I guess maybe it could replace Conjurer's Closet since it is a bit lighter and will probably duplicate more things overall but then again at least the closet has the benefit of doing something that turn.
Although after giving this some more thought, I guess when it comes down to it this isn't likely to be that much more effective than Flamerush Rider, a card we already nixed. So maybe not as exciting as I thought.
Still this set is shaping up to be something special so far. We've already gotten pseudo versions of timetwister, demonic tutor, and opalescence. Not to mention Pia and Kiran (who are definitely getting in) and the flip planeswalkers. Really interesting set.

Again, I like the idea of using it with Myr Battlesphere. It may be win-more, but I honestly don't even think that it particularly is; you can stack triggers so it works out in your favor.
I think the one question here is whether or not we pay for it for Norin, the answer being that it depends on what other shenanigans we have available. Thankfully, it is a may ability, so you can just ignore it if you don't feel like using it. Worse comes to worse, you just sac the token to the legendary rule and still get the extra ETB triggers. I've considered Strionic Resonator before, but doing it for R for each trigger is pretty fantastic. I think it's definitely at least worth testing if not deserving of a serious spot.
In other news, with the addition of Imperial Recruiter, I'm updating my wishboard. I'm thinking:
Jeez. It's Minion Reflector, but better: with a cheaper CMC and cheaper activation cost. Question is: why don't we play the reflector, and does the cheapness make up for it?
In my opinion, it fulfills two functions. One: I often find myself in the situation that I want to do something like abuse Welder, but chances are they'll kill it before I get the chance. Ergo: I need haste enablers, and this card kinda does that. Two: the ETB effect it brings. It doubles the effect of Impact Tremors. And Purphoros. And the second option of Outpost Siege. And all creatures with ETB effects. And Cloustone Curio. And I even believe your Flameshadow copy of Norin the Wary, which you will immediately sacrifice, will trigger Confusion in the Ranks... right?
It'll trigger, but the token will be gone before you could make the exchange so nothing happens.
Thanks :). Still, I'm going to test it I think. And the Fairly odd Parents too. There have been worse sets for Norin...

36 damage for 2 mana (12+12 for the ETB, then a 12/12 haste token after you sac the original Dreadnough to the token)
Looks fun, but as I said earlier... you need to have another enabler (Pandemonium), thus making this card a win-more. As for haste options, there are better cards like Anger or Flamekin Village.

phyrexian dreadnought could be interesting in its own way, if we had the equivalent of trinket mage in red. i'm also thinking of all the times that i had more than 12 myr tokens with no use to me.
but, back on Flameshadow Conjuring, if a card needs anything else to be useful, chances are it will be more dead weight than not. red is tied for worst color for card draw in the color wheel with white, every card counts.

I don't think I can agree with all that. Yes, the conjuring-pandemonium-dreadnought thing looks cute, but it'll never work for me - I play neither pandemonium (backfires too much imo) nor dreadnaught. But this is not very relevant I guess since the chances of that happening are quite small anyway.

quick thought about goblin assassin: you get 3 triggers for 1 mana more (and a disposable creature to boot).
Flameshadow conjuring keeps looking more and more like summoner's closet to me as far as I would consider it a staple, meaning i recently cut it, but the sinergy looks damn good.

Man, months of traveling across the continent(s?) and I come back to a ton of really neat things for Norin. Time to crack the rust and get to fiddlin'
I haven't played Norin in a while since I no longer own a physical deck for him. I still tinker in it, but I mostly read what you guys are doing. Though I may spend more time tinkering with him as well since I have gotten both Kaalia and Nekusar to pretty stable places where not much goes in or out.
Yup! I'm back! Lots of traveling has gotten in the way of doing much else, but that's okay.
I think I left for Belize and then a few road trips through the continental US without updating the front list to include both Daretti and Feldon, so tonight I'll make those changes.. barring any sudden phone calls involving expensive alcohols....
It was nice to play magic with some folks in Tampa Bay, Houston, Atlanta, and Phoenix. Y'all know who you are. But you're no longer important! Ha!
It's also nice to see a lot of really cool things from Origins that could possibly make the list, if not change how it functions.
We're missing a lot of commons and uncommons, but I don't think that that will be an issue for discussing what is out in this set. Here's to hoping one and two drop token producers.
Let's just go down the list of what's out now:
Abbot of Keral Keep - Cheap, efficient, not for us. This is pretty handy for any R/x aggro decks though.
Avaricious Dragon - Draw, that's good. Discard, that's bad. Not tutor-able by any current means, and doesn't do anything useful.
Chandra, Fire of Kaladesh//Chandra, Roaring Flame - Just like abbot, this is pretty cool for an R/x deck. Actually, it would be really cool to have her at the helm of a list. I'm pretty sure that I can find a way to make that stuff infinite in mono red.... but it's not for us.
Embermaw Hellion - Expensive, and most of our "damage sources" end up being colorless or lethal without help. Nope.
Enthralling Victor - I kinda like this guy as a metaspecific pick. Maybe someone likes spamming Fauna Shaman. Maybe Birds of Paradise really wants to generate red mana before sacrificing itself to the torturous god of Skullclamp. It's pretty cool, but it's also expensive. If you want to play it, make sure you know why you're playing it. I won't be.
Exquisite Firecraft - I just want to point out how cool this card's name is. Exquisite Firecraft. Four-of.
Flameshadow Conjuring - Ello, poppit. "Whenever a nontoken creature enters the battlefield under your control, pay r. If you do, put a token onto the battlefield that's a copy of that creature. That token gains haste. Exile it at the beginning of the next end step."
That's pretty damn sexy. If I'm remembering the new(forever!) legend rule, this means if you feel like it you can pay for Norin and sacrifice the copy instantly, giving you triggers for Pandemonium and Warstorm Surge. Doesn't proc Genesis Chamber again, but oh well. It's four mana, which is okay, but it's triple colorless, which is good. I will definitely be experimenting with this sucker.
Ghirapur Gearcrafter - The key part here is that these tokens fly. It's only one, so for three mana this dude isn't worth it, but damn if the prospect of flying tokens doesn't make me happy.
Magmatic Insight - Red Draw. Nothing to see here for us, lands are more valuable than Squee.
Pia and Kiran Nalaar - It's pie and cake! At first I was really not into this card, but then I read it a few more times. Damn! It's a Beetleback Chief that turns myr into firebombs. Is this the beginning of moving away from the Goblin subtheme? It's going to get really hard to justify many of the goblins if stuff like this comes out.
Pyromancer's Goggles - It needs to be mentioned. Just don't do it. Don't look at this, don't think about this. It's only good in very specific decks and that deck isn't helmed by Norin.
Good to be home ...for now!

Tantarus: It didn't make the gaka greifer level, so it should be fine
A hobby is by defenition something you're not any good at - otherwise it'd have been your work. Magic is my biggest hobby so I mustn't be very good at it.
i am not really that excited - all right, they are two tokens, they are artifacts and they fly, but is there any situation they are worth 6 mana and a land drop? i'd rather add Springjack Pasture, if only for the lifegain instead. if you're desperate for token generation; if you feel you need more artifacts available for welder shenanigans and the like, i think the weird chandra's parents and feldon should suffice.
Foundry seems weak in my opinion.
Flameshadow Conjuring could be potentially good, yet i feel that it has a better home in Kresh or some other "creature matters" deck.
Pia and Kiran Nalaar is going straight into the deck. It's a decent producer that can be compared to Beetleback Chief. The important thing to note is that it provides flying meatshields, which red is otherwise sorely lacking in unless you go dragons. At the lowest level, it adds to the creature density with 3 bodies for 1 card which i believe the deck can never have enough of.
Flameshadow Conjuring could be potentially good, yet i feel that it has a better home in Kresh or some other "creature matters" deck.
I don't feel that this is really the case; it's another one of those cards that when the dust settles, gives us a lot more output of useful triggers to work with.

Well the rule has always been when they cost that much they should be winning by themselves. That clearly does not meet that requirement. At minimum it requires something with etb triggers in play so you can duplicate Norin. And extra red mana every time you want to use it. And probably playing other creatures as well to duplicate them too.
All in all feels very win more to me. But gaka seems to like it so I'm sure he'll test the hell out of it and give us a full report.

Gaka still plays Conjurer's Closet according to the front page. This is a win-more card.
Each players have their own preferences when playing a deck. I can play Jareth in my mono-white only because it's the first rare I opened in a pack, even if it's not really good. It all comes down to personal choices and this is what defines the format. This is why EDH is so cool. If you like abusing Myr Battlesphere, then you will like the interaction with Closet and Flameshadow, especially with Ogre Battledriver and Kiki-Jiki.
Pia and Kiran is the only interesting card in this set in my opinion. It's a really good card, it's just a matter of theme/flavour at that point, because it's definitely superior to the 4-CMC goblin alternative, and it can give serious competition to Mogg War Marshal, Goblin Marshal and Siege-Gang Commander too. I'm really starting to consider it, flying creatures are just good in this format, and I probably don't need to have that many tutorable goblins doing nearly all the same thing. It also generates artifacts, which is also a good thing in this deck. Tutorable with Imperial Recruiter and Gamble, and the activated ability is just a really good and relevant bonus too. This could make Ugin's Nexus more playable you know, having Welder and Daretti already.
My own rules when building a Commander deck:
1) Underrated general that I can build around but the deck must work without him/her too.

What do you guys think of Thopter Engineer? At 3 mana its definitely not the most efficient creature generator we have. But the token is a flying artifact and the creature is a haste enabler for all artifacts. Seems worth consideration at least.
Also what an awesome uncommon, drafting this is gonna be so fun

4-mana? Uhh... I always thought it was 5+. I suppose there are some cards at 4 mana that I would feel would be win-more. The 1 mana cost for the trigger I think makes it arguably comparable to Rings of Brighthearth in other decks, which I definitely don't feel is win-more most of the time. I'm still on the side of "This might be worth it," though I will also be testing it, and if it is just win-more, cutting it. I think it's definitely at least near the line, if not straddling it, but it's an interesting question.

Well it is arguably in the 5 mana bucket. It may have a cmc of 4 but it does nothing without further mana investment.

I'm not convinced either.
It looks like a win-more effect. But we definitely need to discuss it and consider it so... yeah.

Concerning Anger & Flamekin Village versus Flameshadow Conjuring... the comparison doesn't fly if you ask me. If I'd be looking for a haste enabler, yes: the first two are better. But conjuring does so much more. It gives sort-of-haste and interacts with all ETB effects. From your own list, that's Mogg War Marshal, Stingscourger, Goblin Matron, Imperial Recruiter, Goblin Settler, Solemn Simulacrum, Tuktuk Scrapper, Goblin Assassin, Siege-Gang Commander, Duplicant, Goblin Marshal, Myr Battlesphere, Genesis Chamber, Impact Tremors, Outpost Siege, Pandemonium, Purphoros, God of the Forge, Confusion in the Ranks, Warstorm Surge. That´s 20% of your pile. I know I play a lot of those too, so making this list makes me even more certain that it deserves testing.
Flameshadow conjuring keeps looking more and more like summoner's closet to me as far as I would consider it a staple, meaning i recently cut it, but the sinergy looks damn good.
Since you are talking about my own specific list, I replied on my own thread dedicated to the said list.
