Also, how are Primeval Bounty and Elbrus playing out.
I've done a bunch more edits since posting that list, removed some expensive cards and added more Theros cards.
Primeval Bounty has been too expensive, either I aways have something else to play, or by the time I play it, it makes very little impact. I've since taken it out.
Elbrus, the binding blade did his job one time, but frankly I rarely even draw into it and I could easily swap him out for something else. However, cards like Elbrus make me so giddy, I love the fact that it could be a surprise win. It's one card I'm willing to sacrifice practicality for the Spirit of EDH.
Erebos, God of the Dead has been an all-star, and the deck often meets his devotion cost (I run a few 1BB cards). As an indestructible enchantment he's nets a ton of card draw and as soon as his devotion is met and Doran enters play, they usually run game together.
Right now I've pushed the pain lands and lifeloss to the limit, and I may have spread it too thin. I'm looking for some more power cards to help me gain back life. Thoughts on Whip of Erebos?

Not a fan. The lifelink is good, but I hate overextending, so equipment like Behemoth Sledge is good most of the time, and there's also Angelic Skirmisher for the anthem effect. I also don't like the idea of recurring creatures without a way to bypass the exiling clause, but in a pinch you could probably use it to decent effect.
Is Batterskull still too expensive to replace Sledge with?
It's a better card in general than Behemoth Sledge, but as long as its getting played in Modern I won't be getting one. I'm pretty much done investing in expensive cards online.
Would you replace it with sledge if you had one though?
Most likely, if I didn't just run both. The vigilance is always good to have, but when they have a chump blocker it doesn't amount to much more than a little bit of lifegain., whereas trample still lets me get damage through. What's best about Batterskull is that you can still wear it in conjunction with all of the Swords, which I currently can't due due to the color identity of [c]Behemoth Sledge[c].
I also see a lack of Tutors in here. Would you put them in if you had them? Like Vampiric, demonic, and enlightened?
I'll have to check. I'm pretty sure I have vampiric and demonic, although I'm sure I don't have enlightened. If I do I should be running them. The deck is due for a review anyway. To answer your question, tutors are great because the reduce variance. If you want every game to be as consistent as possible, you should run as many tutors as you can.
Have you tried Sword of Fire and Ice? Seems better than war and Peace since you already have so many lifegain options.
I use F&I in another deck to great effect. I love the card draw it provides, but in an aggro deck I really like W&P. I think a lot has to do with how many swords do you want to load into your deck and what colors do you need protection from? Light and Shadow is also good in this deck because our dudes tend to die. A lot is just personal preference if you don't plan on running all of them, but War and Peace works well for me.
Ok cool thanks for the info. One more question. How do you use necropotence? I never learned how to use it well.
Since it takes place during your end step, I use it as soon as it resolves to draw back to seven cards (retaining priority during each activation to avoid K-Grip). I only use it to draw back to seven cards, but if its late game and you want to dig you can draw as many as you like, life dependant of course. Even of you draw a couple extra cards and discard chaff it's worthwhile. I know not fully utilizing it to its potential, but drawing a couple of cards each turn is really powerful.
Edit: Looking over my online collection, I do not have Demonic Tutor or Vampiric Tutor, so that explains their lack on inclusion. If you have them, I'd cut Increasing Ambition for one, and something else for the other.
Actually the deck doesn't fare too poorly without Doran, mostly because I try not to rely too heavily on the "toughness matters" theme. It still hurts because he is one of my main beaters, but I'm not out of the game. What hurts the most is getting an empty grip. It's harder to get back into the game when I'm down to a couple of cards and don't have a way to draw more than my one per turn.
Are there any other cards you would put in here if you had more money? And looking at the lifegain and export package have you tried a recursion package yet?
Are there any other cards you would put in here if you had more money? And looking at the lifegain and export package have you tried a recursion package yet?
Yeah I think I'll take this deck into a more reanimator recursion package. Do you think I should keep the equipment package as another win condition? I have a lot of the other cards you wanted cause I'm redoing my decks.
I would definitely keep the equipment. Doran is a big enough threat on his own when you can get him swinging with a sword by turn 4, and if you run a decent number of creatures, the swords will help them pack a bigger punch. Dauthi Embrace is another good card for sneaking damage through, and it's cheap enough to come back with Sun Titan.
Doran is a really cool general because he's flexible enough to go in different directions. Even if you went a full blown control shell with removal and wrath, he's a finisher you'll always have.
Ok thanks I'll start getting ready to put this deck together. I really want Doran aa a general cause he has that promo card as does niv. I have to put him together too. Hopefully this Doran deck can keep up with a Kozilek and niv Mizzet deck.

If you have the full art promo, I'm insanely jealous. Kozi is easy to keep down, just run lots of cheap artifact hate like Nature's Claim, and the various 2cmc ones. I'd certainly include Deglamer for when something indestructible shows up. Niv Mizzet is more tricky, but again, removal is your friend for the enchantments. If they get too smug with blue counters, you've got Dosan of the Falling Leaf to help you out, although that will hurt your removal as well.
Well I feel horrible for neglecting this deck, but I haven't even logged onto MTGO in a couple of months, let alone played the deck. In fact, I just now swapped Sylvan Primordial out of the deck for Oracle of Mul Daya.
New Set Discussion: Born of the Gods
Mechanics
Inspired - The goal of the deck if games go long is to keep our stuff untapped, so this mechanic is not that great for us.
Tribute - A neat mechanic as a political tool, but generally giving opponents choices is a bad thing.
Bestow - For Commander it sucked in Theros, and it doesn't look any more promising here.
Devotion - Hit or miss. In a three color deck, it forces you to overextend, so that's a strike against it here.
Heroic - Back again, and will probably make about as much an impact as the heroic cards in Theros did.
White:
Excoriate - And expensive cost for an effect we can do cheaper, but worth mentioning simply because tapping things is what we do.
Fated Retribution - Higher cmc than I'd like to pay, but still playable in some decks.
Glimpse the Sun God - Great for forcing creatures into a [Meekstone effect. I could see this working well in a lockdown deck.
Nessian Demolok - Great in theory, but in a format full of sweepers and random utility creatures, a 3/3 or a 6/6 is the same thing when they're vanilla.
Seriously, it curves perfectly into Dorin and gives him +6 damage. Why wouldn't you use it?

A friend of mine runs it in his Doran deck and I have seen how good it is equipped to Doran. However, without Doran it is nothing more than making a giant blocker. With my curve I can T2 ramp, T3 Doran, and T4 equip a sword and swing. I would prefer to run equipment that can keep the rest of my creatures competitive if Doran is not in play. There is nothing wrong with Slagwurm Armor, I just choose not to run it.
I hate necroing threads but I want to ask if it is possible to run this deck with only <$10 singles unless there is card that is absolutely needed to help this deck function smoothly?

If a primer gets to the point where it is getting necroed than we need to do something about it (and that includes my own.) I haven't been very active on this and haven't played the deck in quite some time, for which I apologize.
Anyway, to answer your question. Yes! In my experience, Junk (or Necra, or whatever the new Khans name is) typically grinds out longer games, but Doran is an aggro general that wants to come out fast and hard. Personally I liked speed with a general like him, so I would focus on ramp/color fixing, and pinpoint spot removal. Outside of fetchlands and duals most of that can be obtained cheaply. Loading up Doran with equipment doesn't have to be expensive either. Slagwurm Armor grants him effectively 6/6, but even a simple Behemoth Sledge makes him a three-hit general. Biggest thing is you'll just have to work harder to protect him. Card draw is another important aspect because you can empty your hand if you aren't careful, but black and green have cheap options like Erebos, God of the Dead (or Greed), and one time draw like Read the Bones and Harmonize.

I'd love to get an Academy Rector for enchantment tutoring, Karmic Justice, Martyr's Bond, and Maze of Ith for pillowforting, Strip Mine to swap out for Tectonic Edge, Mirri's Guile/Sylvan Library for topdeck manipulation/draw, and of course more fetchlands. I'm sure there's more, but those for sure.
I'm not sold on the lifegain. It's decent but not enough of a wincon that you should feel it's necessary. Recursion is great, so stuff like Phyrexian Reclamation, Life from the Loam, and Sheoldred, Whispering One/Debtor's Knell are good too.
