Open the Vaults and Roar of Reclamation have been very powerful for me. Some people also run Sun Titan for added recursion. Sharuum and Tawnos' Coffin sets up a recursion engine.
I wouldn't build sharuum for that. In fact I would look more to vintage decks for inspiration rather than EDH.
Not exactly what I had in mind. Need helpful cuts to try and retain the core combo pieces / engines. What cards are absolutely essential if you had to pair it down to a 60 card singleton list.
Don't have to the time or resources to go out and build a vintage deck.
It's not for a serious tournament, just wanted some input as a thought experiment if nothing else.
I honestly didn't imagine that there'd be this much discussion on Brainstorm and Ponder. Especially considering that at one time I ran both, and the only reason I dropped Brainstorm was for Ponders shuffle effect, and the fact I had a foil one Brainstorm is a great card, but I prefered the shuffle effect on ponder. It made bad selections with Scroll Rack go away. However, I'm thinking about cutting it for Terrarion.
That said, while TURBOOVERCOMBO builds of Sharuum exist, I'm going to echo what was said earlier in thread and say this: Sharuum should be a deck that can handle a lot of different issues, because a lot of different hate exists for it. If you're going for turbo combo, by all means, do it-however, don't expect playgroups to be too friendly to you. Sharuum should be an answer deck that happens to win by combo. It's a deck that needs to be versatile, with versatile win conditions, because lack of versatility and meta-readiness will crush it under a wave of Aura Shards and more.
However, not every meta is created equal. My personal build needs to be able to handle artifact hate, decks that can ramp quicker, mass aggro, tokens, and the occasional combo list. It's been built for that. I've gone against GY based decks like Karador and gotten my teeth kicked in. If it was built for nothing but combo, could I have won? maybe.
Build the deck for what you're facing the most. The list can shift in form and function by trading out as little as five, ten cards.

Hah, its funny you say that because Karador is in my meta and I always have to worry about that turn 2 reanimate It that Betrays. It saddens me a bit to realize how much I've been guided by my meta now that I think about it. I used to just run pure flick and play out long games with stuff like Stoneforge Mystic and Mulldrifter using simple and easy wincons to counter or stop like Magister Sphinx and Debt to the Deathless. But once Animar, Karador, Damia and Krenko showed up it became very evident that early win cons were best. So that brings me to another question: What commander in your meta gives you the biggest problems and what individual cards? Is everyone's meta full of open blue ready to counter or are your threats coming from opponent's main phases? Am I the only one who hates Animar, Soul of Elements?
Brainstorm, Ponder, etc are all REALLY powerful effects, and they should be discussed as such!
As far as my meta, it is really weird. There are a huge number of decks that I play against regularly, everything from Lin-Sivvi to Azami to Child of Alara, so rather than listing my entire line of experience I'll go over the places where I've spent the mos time.
For a while, it was solidly razzliox's Jarad deck (which i'll keep plugging with reckless abandon, because the thing is a finely-tuned monstrosity), a really controlly Momir Vig deck, and a veritable pick-one of Shattergang Stax, Nin combo, Derevi Stasis/Combo, and Jeleva Battlecruiser. Jarad offered extremely fast combo, massive card advantage and ramp, and a never-ending stream of destruction that would flow out between reanimation spells. Momir would quietely sit in the corner until turn three, and by that I mean come ramping out of the gates with an early Prophet of Kruphix. If it was allowed long enough for him to untap, resolve Momir Vig, and untap again, it was pretty much game over. This was all fine and dandy, except that he had a trillion ways to guarantee that every time we tried to kill it, it would either get countered or he'd just get the damn thing again anyway. Jeleva had a bunch of extra turn effects, solid removal, and an amazing counter suite, basically forcing us all to fear the force. This deck wasn't nearly as threatening as the other two, thanks to Jeleva revealing if she was gonna get out of control, but would occasionally Hatred the whole table thanks to Archaeomancers and free Time Stretches.
Basically, I had to deal with two really mean decks that played similarly oppressive strategies (extremely fast combo, extreme card advantage, extreme removal and control), and a pick-yours of the final slot. This fourth (and sometimes fifth) slot was usually filled by one of the other decks mentioned above, though I often felt bad for them because their otherwise brutal decks weren't able to keep up with the exponential growth Momir and Sharuum jumped on. Jarad generally took the most wins, though whether that was due to player skill, deck power, or some combination is purely speculation. I'd like to say that both Momir and my Sharuum are as powerful as Jarad now, because some nights I'd win as many as half of our total games and sometimes Momir would 3v1 the table all night with ease, but I know that wasn't true as recently as July. With any luck, I'll find out next weekend.
Since then, I've found myself at college with a very fluid meta, with my biggest nemesi being Nin, and an extreme over-saturation of anti-Sharuum metadecking. Nin's deck is half-artifact combo, half control, and extremely difficult to play against. You never realize how good Goblin Welder is until you see it weld out Tangle Wire, bring in Torpor Orb, and then laugh at your face in response to Sharuum being cast. Makes me yearn for some vintage.
The anti-Sharuum metadecking was really humorous for a while; my deck was far better than even the most established players in this group, so I would switch out decks, yet every time I came I'd find somebody slipped in a fourth piece of grave hate, or somebody else had picked up a Kataki, or a million other things. There was one game in particular where, all before turn 3, two RiP, a Nihil Spellbomb, a Scrabbling Claws, a Relic, and two Torpor Orbs resolved. Admittedly the spellbomb was mine, but still! That time is mostly over though, as a couple of the more competitive people have been introduced to the wonderful world of degenerate commander.
Whats relevant here? Well, my deck was tuned for dealing with a real monster. I needed to be both advancing my gameplan and stopping somebody elses at the same time, which is more or less where I decided to adopt the instant-speed answer mantra; if you can lose with your whole deck in hand, your deck isn't good. Since then, I've been building it for a blind meta in the name of grinding SCG pods, something that I highly reccomend. It gives a real sense of perspective on how good your deck is compared to the average.
Yes Vindicate went out the door for Oblation in my deck and I still stack 4-5 different counters. Wish I had known how great Oblation was for its utility. What are some of the best instant speed answers you guys are using besides just countering? I am very interested in the value machine everyone is saying Sharuum can be. I recently added Salvaging Station, more utility one drop artifacts and a Trading Post and have been loving the interactions.
As far of instant speed answers, I believe I play more than Jack or jostin; Swords to Plowshares, Oblation, Trickbind, and cycled Decree of Pain are my best ones, but you can never overestimate the power of Tawnos's Coffin, Entomb, Sharuum. Suddenly an instant-speed Spine of Ish Sah. So, realistically my instant speed answers are tutors. Normally I'd play more direct answers, but because of Nin being very controlly, I've been able to lighten up a bit and play more cards that fit in the machine.
If you want, I can run over some of the best KCI ones, since I seem to be the player running those the most, and that will be more helpful to the thread at large, since my deck is twisted around the card:
KCI:
-Crucible of Worlds + Artifact Lands gives insane mana. Bonus points for cloning an Oracle of Mul-Daya.
-Taqwnos's Coffin + Sharuum lets me return any artifact at instant speed, but creature is exchangeable. KCI is academic here, any sac outlet will do.
-Sensei's Divining Top. Yes, I would like to draw a card for the low cost of getting 2 colorless!
-Nim Deathmantle + Artifact Creature is a weird way to get the above Coffin value, plus funny stuff like flickering a Battlesphere or Duplicant.
-Salvaging Station + Trinkets, aka 2/3 of the combo. Top/Star/spellbomb lets me draw cards, lands/cmc<2 rocks give me insane mana, everything else procs Disciple of the Vault and Altar of the Brood and Gravestorm.
-Spine of Ish Sah being the sickest. I suddenly have the option of 5:Vindicate. With Sculpting Steel it becomes 1: Vindicate. Gross.
-Sharuum gives me exactly enough for cast her for the same cost, plus protects her from tuck effects, which is really nice. I'd rather her be in my command zone than draw two cards ANY day.
The thing about most of these is that they are impartial or incomplete combos, and the rest usually win games. Deathmantle+Sharuum+KCI+any artifact goes infinite, Salvaging Station+KCI+Karn is a combo and a half, Spine becomes a win-con if you have large enough amounts of mana for the Scultping Steel combo, and so on.
A good way to think of the deck is sac effects and recursive effects; combine the two, and your deck gets out of control really fast, since they both feed the other. The more things you reanimate, the more you can sac, and the more you sac, the more you can reanimate! That's at the heart of most of the value engines.
Do you sac the Top in response to the "put top on top of library" trigger? Is it a separate trigger for draw and putting it on the library?
I assume with Karn, you can draw your whole deck, yes?
Spine seems really gross with KCI, I think I want to throw that in, but now to figure out what to cut. Is your list posted somewhere? I'd like to compare some stuff.
You're definitely not the only one that hates Animar Ironically, I'd build that deck today if I could.
My store has recently undergone some changes in ownership, and we're slowly trying to rebuild our CMDR base(...sigh, again) with my input and help.
This basically means that, for the time being, I AM the metagame. I'm loaning decks out as new comers try to find their footing.
Currently, I'm running the following:
Sharuum (answer/combo)
Karametra (ramp)
Bosh, Iron Golem (mana denial)
Isamaru (HOW CAN I HOLD ALL THESE TOKENS)
Shattergang Bros (NO NEED TO HOLD THEM THEY'RE GOING TO DIE ANYWAYS)
(Random Rotationg sixth list. As of right now, Zombie Tribal, Mono B)
Honestly, the lists are all fairly easy to pick up, balance each other out nicely, and create a varied enough format to allow for some interesting political interactions. For example, Sharuum and Bosh get along until Bosh reaches critical levels of cluster-*******. Karametra can beat Sharuum, but has a hard time with bosh and Isamaru sometimes. Shattergang doesn't care about Bosh or Sharuum, as it tries to kill through goblin-based damage enchantments, but can still lose to karametra.
Isamaru just growls really loudly and swings, but it's effective.
However, we do have some more experienced players in the mix. One player in particular is packing Hana, Ship's Navigator. Another is using Scion of the Ur-Dragon, and does REALLY well despite having an almost all-basic mana base. It's when I get out of my comfort zone I experience problems. However, I feel like my list is tuned enough to at least put up a decent fight against a lot of problematic cards. I'm not too worried.
On KCI:
That card is really, really sick. If I wasn't bent towards salvaging station so much, I'd go with it's interactions instead. Salvaging station is a self-preserving engine, but KCI is a self-advancing engine due to the mana gain.

I'm in a fairly active edh group we regularly see 12+ players weekly and most of them have 3+ decks, or might borrow a deck from another player. We sometimes break into pods, but we'll also have mega-pods, or play Sheriff or other variants.
I personally am running Sharuum combo/jank, Sigarda Enchantress Voltron, Kokusho Reanimator, Glissa Stax, and Aurelia agro. I like to have different decks which have different play styles and goals. My Sharuum deck is currently in the 'shop' as I am looking to take out all of the purely defensive cards such as Ensnaring Bridge and Forcefield in lieu of more proactive tech.
Altar is a nice addition, but you've got to be careful with the Eldrazi still being popular options. If you're going to do that, run Leyline of the Void to avoid awkwardness.

Mhm. I've been thinking a lot about porting Leyline + Helm combo into Sharuum. Both cards do stuff by themselves, and it supports the mill plan with Altar or Extractor Demon.
Thinking about a more controlly-staxy build with Death Cloud, Ravages of War, Catastrophe, and Armageddon - reviving the old deck known as Sharuum on the Rocks (referencing its mana-rock-heavy build).
I built EDH eggs last night with Sharuum at the helm. It was hilarious. It's basically just a lowered-curve version of Jostin's list with every mana egg and trinket possible with Moonglove Extract as the win condition.
I also have an 'eggs' list but with Atogatog at the helm. Uses cards like Life's Legacy to draw cards, lots of mana doublers, Second Sunrise esque cards and Barren Glory/Balancing act as the win con. It's a blast to combo off and doesn't always work out. I love it.
You guys are all running Altar of the Brood, right?
Im not, but it doesn't fit my meta. Eldrazi and reanimation are both popular so it's more risky.
I mean, you dont want to cast it until you know you've got the win. Its a wincon that can be tutored for by Artificer's Intuition, which incidentally gets the Nihil Spellbomb you need to make the card work against Eldrazi and whatnot. You give it a try yet? It comes highly recommended.
I understand the strengths of the card, but it also brings an extra layer of complexity with needing to worry about eldrazi (which nearly every deck in my meta has at least one of) etc. If I'm going to have a card sit in my hand for 'just the right moment' then I want it to be decisive like Bitter Ordeal. After looking at similar cards such as Scrapheap I realized that these were not the sorts of artifacts that I was looking to use.
If you're finding success with it then I am glad. However, it's not the right card for my deck at this time.
I played helm/leyline combo for a while. It's incredibly effective. I eventually dropped it because for 8 mana, I had other ***** I wanted to do. Try it though.
