When you do decide to update this list, I'd like your thoughts on including three cards that are lolworthy in other decks but can crush or just be fun in your deck.
Scenario:
Cast any spell with Riku out and copy it, putting a copy on the stack without casting it from your hand. Knowledge Pool or Possibility Storm will eat the original Rampant Growth and pop out a new spell. Sadly you can't copy it. Seems saucy and janky at the same time.
Planar Chaos gives you a 50% chance of losing the one you cast from your hand, and a 0% chance of losing the second one. A very different effect and probably best played in the mid game when hands are getting worn down so opponents won't be as tempted to throw multiple removal spells at it.
EDIT: Additional benefit. You can cast Riku safely with either of the first two because he's not being cast from hand. I'm likely to pull Planar Chaos.
Hey DramaTurtle and thanks for the primer(s)! Just wanted to let you know that there are still people reading and getting inspired by your lists, so don't give up on them!
(That's it really, no need to read on... )
I already have a Maelstroem Wanderer deck, but I'm getting tired of the lack of reactive plays and the brainless ramp+spin the cascade wheel and win through pure sillyness of the goodstuff.dec-fatties... I've got Riku too, and since I've completed building the manabase (save for one dual), I thought building some sort of Riku build would be the cheapest alternative for a new deck.
If anyone has the time and energy, I would much appreciate a little help with analyzing my (very small and casual) meta and tuning the list a bit. I'm facing: Olivia, Kaalia, Rafiq and (not very often) Captain Sisay. Olivia is a heavy Vampire tribal, with some ramp elements to be able to abuse Olivia's abilities. Kaalia is all about her ability. Rafiq is bant goodstuff, but with a lot of search elements to find a clunky infinite turn combo that we've allowed so far, including Eternal Witness, Sun Titan, a sac outlet and an extra turn sorcery. Captain Sisay is also built around her abilities.
My thoughts so far is that 3 points of damage at instant speed messes with all those decks, so I'd like to try that. Also, Arrest pretty much locks all the generals down, so for a while I was looking at a Uril deck, but I didn't get a feel for it. Hexproof stops Olivia cold, Stranglehold kills Rafiq and Sisay, and bounce gets Kaalia and Sisay good (and Olivia, to some degree). But, as I wrote above, I already have the shell for a RUG deck, so I decided to go with the burn/bounce/counter theme. I was intrigued by the flare list, of which I own many of the cards already, so I think I'll put that together and see how my group reacts...
I am new to commander format, but this is the general that I will be playing in my local commander league, just kinda curious why you are running primeval titan when he is banned in this format?
Emmara is like the worst parts of Legends and Homelands got pregnant, aborted the fetus, tossed it in the trashcan, set it on fire and wrapped the corpse in a Dragon's Maze pack wrapper.
So it looks like I haven't revisited this thread since Innistrad so I'm going to start off by making a list of cards I have found interesting since then*:
*Note that my current incarnation of the deck is Riku Flare, but this brainstorm works rather well for both incarnations of Spellslinger Riku.
At first glance, Theros reminds me A LOT of Kamigawa. All style and no substance. The block mechanics are pretty much all terrible (Monstrous, Devotion, Constellation, Strive, other random abilities they decided to name) which means not much good for EDH, perhaps aside from the legends.
In other news, Hellkite Tyrant is one of my new favourite cards. Everything from the art to the ability is just happy.
Oh, and I've been thinking of trying out a group-huggy-chaos Riku variant for a while now... we'll see.

These cards were all rather dull and non-conducive to the gameplan. Epic Experiment very much failed to impress me any of the times I remember using it. It's pretty much spot on in the flavour department, but for the sake of utility it goes bye-bye. Arcane Denial is unnecessary. Rhystic Study is pretty lame. And Gamble annoyed me often.
These cards add more versatility to the list. I can now deal with creatures better using Curse of the Swine; do really weird things with Unexpected Results considering I can copy the card I get for the low price of 6; play a fat Explore in Urban Evolution; and try out that new Mana Drain in Plasm Capture, which could be used to power out a high-priced Riku or copy a fat spell.
I'll update the OP with these changes and, in the near future, I'm also going to be updating Riku Flare into Riku Bomb; that is, removing the flares and adding more bombs. Fun.

In an event to spice our group up, my buddies and I wanted to build Commander decks for less than $100 on mtg vault. It was also suggested that we play something different. I chose Riku (as I am a Ceta man naturally), and this is what I came up with:
By way of explanation, some self imposed restrictions:
a) I don't like extra turns - or taking up a heap of time. My friends having fun also is more important than me winning the game;
b) No infinite combos. Even though there is reiteriate and mana untappers, it will never be used that way;
c) avoid tutors - without going into whether or not this is the correct choice, we have chosen to avoid them and ride the chaos of 99 card singleton.
d) Dont be a ****. That is the basic premise of our group.
a) the mana base needs a few more basic lands to run both Early Harvest and Pulse of Llanowar. Keeping the mana base in basics means I can keep it cheap ($100 means no shocks, and no sac lands etc).
b) I went with mana double Enchants over seething song and more 1 shot types of sorceries intentionally. although they help my opponent, I am (generally) the only one at the table that wants REALLY big mana.
c) No tutors - I need a fair few win conditions given there is no ability to find certain combos.
d) killing one player is fine - I am not a massive fan of "Oh i combo'd off and killed all the table i guess i win" types of decks. I am trying to make this, to the greatest extent possible, a fair combo deck.
Any cheap cards you can suggest? Areas you think the deck might be lacking? Thanks
I'm going to resurrect this thread again, if that's okay.
I'm in the process of tweaking my Riku deck. Any thoughts on what is good from the most recent sets? (KTK Block)
Had to make an A/C finally after a long time to post some support for an update to this topic. After the release of C.15 and the fun storm that is Mizzix I'm wondering if she'd have a home here? Particularly since slinging would bebe far more fun with green!
If you don't mind me.asking. Do you have a more up to date list? I'd love to sell the idea to an izzet slinger that adding green + riku would be so much more fun. Ramp for daaaays

And yeah I haven't been around in a LONG while.
Well well well look who is back.
Haha, yeah :p.
So it looks like I haven't revisited this thread since Innistrad so I'm going to start off by making a list of cards I have found interesting since then*:
RTR block:
Cyclonic Rift
Diluvian Primordial
Hellkite Tyrant
Melek, Izzet Paragon
Progenitor Mimic
Zhur-taa Ancient
Utvara Hellkite
Theros block:
Dictate of Karametra
Curse of the Swine

Anything I missed? Any new suggestions?
These would definitely fit into my Riku Chaos idea. I'm not sure about adding these into main decklists, but you never know. Still just branstorming!
- Epic Experiment
- Arcane Denial
- Rhystic Study
- Gamble
- Izzet Charm
These cards were all rather dull and non-conducive to the gameplan. Epic Experiment very much failed to impress me any of the times I remember using it. It's pretty much spot on in the flavour department, but for the sake of utility it goes bye-bye. Arcane Denial is unnecessary. Rhystic Study is pretty lame. And Gamble annoyed me often.
+ Curse of the Swine

1 Coiling Oracle
1 Eternal Witness
1 Melek, Izzet Paragon
1 Mnemonic Wall
1 Mulldrifter
1 Sakura-Tribe Elder
1 Wood Elves
//Enchantment (8)
1 Collective Restraint
1 Dictate of Karametra
1 Future Sight
1 Heartbeat of Spring
1 Propaganda
1 Pulse of Llanowar
1 Repercussion
1 Rhystic Study
//Instant (25)
1 Arcane Denial
1 Beast Within
1 Capsize
1 Comet Storm
1 Constant Mists
1 Counterflux
1 Cyclonic Rift
1 Early Harvest
1 Evacuation
1 Fact or Fiction
1 Harrow

c) avoid tutors - without going into whether or not this is the correct choice, we have chosen to avoid them and ride the chaos of 99 card singleton.
d) Dont be a ****. That is the basic premise of our group.
Ways this deck wins:
a) big fireballs, powered out by either mana doublers (Pulse of Llanowar, Heartbeat of Spring and Dictate of Karametra or untappers (turnabout, Early Harvest or Rude Awakening);
b) hunting pack storm or ignite memories storm;
c) Repercussion into chain reaction, starstorm or blasphemous act. Repercussions makes combat for everyone else a nightmare.
Points of difference:-
a) the mana base needs a few more basic lands to run both Early Harvest and Pulse of Llanowar.
