Hey guys, sorry the thread is currently under construction as the Beta version is coming up. I apologize for the inconvenience, some of the tags are not working. The full beta version will be up soon. Thank you.
First of all, thank you all for your patience. The beta version of the Primer is now up! It is still a little rough and it needs some more work, but besides that it is live! I am sorry for the confusion of the past few days. I will clear up everything now:
The reasons to run Karmic Guide are generally speaking that you have interactions with creatures that you plan to abuse with it. Cast Karmic Guide, Skullclamp it, Birthing Pod off of it, flicker it, chain it down with clones for blockers. If you had Survival of the Fittest and creatures in list I could see going with it but you are creature light with light to no creature abuse either.
In this particular list, you really are not abusing creatures which makes me think you are generally better off not running it here. Don't get me wrong, I think its an amazing card but here it is just a chump blocker for a turn really. You are better off rezing from anyone's yard with black reanimation in a deck that doesn't abuse creatures well.
You are totally right! ISB thank you so much for helping me draft up this new list. You are a life saver. What do you want for Christmas?
I'm confused, what happened to the Planeswalker build??? The info on the deck talks all about it, but then I only see one of them in your build
It use to be a Superfriends build, but I recently shifted metas and it was much too fragile. If you are interested in the Superfriends build, look in the Extras section. Thank you for dropping by! Please let me know what else I can help you with.
I think the Planeswalker build got lost when the newer alternative build was posted. Maybe we can get both posted up?
This is true. The new version is up and the Superfriends build is now in the extras for those who are interested. Thank you for stopping by! Would you like anything else posted?
@rhakee. First thing, Teneb Commander is a lot of fun and I really love your Guide/Thread.
It would be really interesting why you made these changes in your Teneb build. I saw a pretty different list from you about half a year ago with more creatures like fatties (e.g.Sheoldred, Whispering One or Avenger of Zendikar). What was the reason you made these changes? Just trying something new or are you more succesful with your recent build? How is your recent build performing so far? The changelog was the most interesting thing to read, but sadly you stopped updating it.
Thank you so much! I appreciate your kind words! Well I can give you the changes in a nutshell:
Basically, I have been shifting metas and playgroups for the past couple of years because of school. I have also been slammed with my studies so I was unable to regularly update my lists and when I got the chance, the lists were totally different from what they were before. Before I was running what people call "Big Reanimator" where you just get fatties in the yard like Sheoldred or Avenger and reanimate them for value. This wasn't fast enough for one meta, so I decided to build a Planeswalker deck, which was then too fragile. I now switched it to a control build which it will hopefully stay as. I made these changes because of a meta shift. Would you like to see a list with more fatty recursion? In extras, there is a Birthing Pod list which is similar to what I use to run about half a year ago, but I am sure I have the old decklist somewhere around here.
This list has been the most successful and resilient of all of my lists, and I will report more with Game Reports, which are coming soon. As for the Change Log, it was written when I really didn't know what i was doing. I reset the Change Log but it will be updated regularly. Did you have any specific questions I could answer for you? Thank you again for your interest and enthusiasm.
And thank you all for your input and questions. I also would love any feedback on the new version that is up. I still need to adjust it a bit. Remember, it is you who keep this Primer running. Happy Holidays everyone! Drop any other questions you have below!
Thank you very much for the info! Yeah it would be really nice to see the old decklist. I just saw the Haakon Birthing Pod build (which is closest to your old list) which I really like in terms of the theme. I like themes in general. The thing is, even though it looks like a lot of fun to pull of your game, when you got everything prepared (Birthing Pod out/ Haakon and a lot of creatures in your graveyard while you have enough lands to play them)it seems a bit to situational to me. It also reminds me a bit of a Karador build where many cards in the deck compliment its commander even though they wouldn't be that effective themselves, though I think Karador, Ghost Chieftain should work better because he is a commander who should always cost just 3 mana to cast and doesn't need to be put in a graveyard first like Haakon, Stromgald Scourge. I think Teneb decks strongest point is that you can easily play all the 'strong-for-itself-cards' whith Teneb reviving some of them in a crucial phase of the game. Sure, in the Haakon list there are still many strong cards in it but I still think there are too many situational cards, especially some of the instants or the creature type changing enchantments/artifacts. That's why I liked your old list a bit more.
But I guess I need to see your old list once again.
What do you think about including Triskelion for the Big Reanimator list? Its effect in general is quite nice in many situation e.g. killing of small opposite commanders etc and the Triskelion+Mikaeus, the Unhallowed infinite damage shoot combo is incredibly strong especially with all the toolbox/reanimator theme in this deck.
My apologizes for getting back to you so late. The holidays have been a mess for me, and I am starting my new job now so that is going to be crazy. But I thank you for your patience. The setting up of Birthing Pod/Haakon is a little situational but to me they are both two separate entries. Birthing Pod just needs one creature in play to go off and toolbox creature answers, while Haakon can come down anytime to draw value from some of your Knights in the graveyard. Its a little more focuses than my old build but you're right. At the end of the day, any Teneb deck is simply a deck packed with value helmed by a 6/6 flying beater. I am still trying to find my old list but I will post it and let you know as soon as possible.
For Triskelion, if you're looking to combo out, I am sure it has its place with Mikaeus. In a big reanimator deck it sits at the same CMC as Mike, so it slims your other options for 6 CMC creatures. But it is a fine inclusion. However, if you were just looking to shoot random creatures your opponents control, Vish Kal, Blood Arbiter is much better. You may need to build around him but in these colors, +1/+1 counters and sac creatures are not in short supply.
I just wanted to say thank you to everyone for your support and patience with this new list and Primer. It means so much to me! I will be playing in the current Commander League at my local LSG every Wednesday for this month. Last Wednesday I just wanted to test the water with the meta, see how I should mold my deck and give you guys some actual playing results. In the next few days I will post th first game report on the thread. That way many of you can get a feel of how actual games play out. I am beyond excited and look foward to your comments, questions, and concerns. Happy New Year everyone!
I wanted to give a update on the deck and the build in general. I am currently playing in the January Commander League at my LGS so I can get some playtime and experience with my deck. I am also looking into Fate Reforged which looks friggin awesome so expect a review in the next couple of weeks. You can find the first game report in the second main thread of the Primer, along with more reports soon to come. I usually won't post them here. I won't change any cards until I do my Fate Reforged review, but for now I would like to talk about some cards that are on the line, either to be dropped or added. I really need some input on these so please comment and tell me what you think:
I definitely need more artifact/enchantment removal. Qasali Pridemage is coming in soon. I also need to find me a Austere Command.
I think the Enchantment's matter is becoming a little cumbersome. Sphere of Safety does work but I feel like I have only been luck with that card. I don't know why all of my enchantments haven't been destroyed in response and then I get a alpha strike. Also, Sterling Grove is super sub par lately, and if we're gonna take that out, might as well take out Privilaged Position. That leaves three card slots free if I dump 'Enchantments Matter'.
On that note, Ghostly Prison is good for what it does. I think the other cards suck because "5 Mana? Ain't nobody got time for that" while Ghostly Prison is three mana and is good on its own.
I think Massacre Wurm deserves a comeback.
A fear of mine lately is decking myself since all of my goods go to the yard but also I don't have many ways to reuse my non-creature spells that I need to really control the game. I am considering an Eldrazi for good measure and a way to never have my library empty. Probably Kozilek, Butcher of Truth. Thoughts?
Unexpectedly Absent is for some reason unexpectedly absent. I never have the patience or mana open to play this card, and it is a never a card I WISH was in my hand right now. The only time I have ever wished I had it was for a God. And even then, it wasn't online!. I feel like Oust would just be a better choice, or perhaps Deglamer for Gods and Darksteel Forges.
Haste is good. May need more haste.
Winning with Teneb is good. Need more ways to pump him. Does this mean Rancor is playable? Honestly, I need some more pumps for Teneb.
Dimir House Guard hasn't done much lately except kill a Jace, the Mindsculptor so HA. Coffin Queen has also been slightly sub par with reanimating. We shall see future developments with these two.
So overall, here is what looks like is coming out:
I was really interested what your experiences with your recent control build are. Just on the paper, the cards you excluded make all sense. In my opinion they don`t really fit in there so well. I've won so many games with my Teneb deck with Living Death. Bringing all the nice stuff with Survival of the Fittest on the GY and then firing Living Death is a gg in most games. Your list runs really not enough creatures to get the maximum out of it.
Dimir House Guard is such a nice dog for always fetching me Birthing Pod but he just doesn`t fit this role in your list. He will probably just give you some removal spell for 4CMC but this is not so overwhelming. Other than removal he can give you Greater Good, but there are better ways. That`s why you should maybe go a little `back to the roots` and include Academy Rector and Birthing Pod. These two cards are just so good that I`ve never experienced any game where they underperformed in any way - quite the opposite actually. They just win you games and can turn the tide when you`re on the losing edge. I know you played them before, so you know how good they can be, but maybe you have to think about reviving them again (that`s what we usually do with Teneb , don`t we? ). Naturally you have to include some other creatures for the mana curve, but I think it`s absolutely worth it. If you do Dimir House Guard can also stay in there.
Sac Academy Rector for Survival of the Fittest is just so important. In my opinion Survival of the Fittest is easily the best and most important card in a reanimator theme. No other card can so effectively fill our GY while fixing the creatures in our hands. So you need more options to get this card in your hand - or directly on the battlefield. Shred Memory might be a pretty nice inclusion for that!
Talking about filling the Graveyard for reanimation. You play a reanimator deck with Teneb and many reanimation spells, yet except of Greater Good and Survival of the the fittest you lack cards that fill your GY (did I tell you to run Birthing Pod again?). If your opponents don`t have sth interesting in their GY your recursion spells are often dead cards in your hand. And your commander may swing for high damage, yet cannot do the only thing he does better than Karador, Ghost Chieftain - reviving high mana creatures for just 3 mana.
About your Commander. I dont know if you should rely too much on a Commander like Teneb, the Harvester. Sure, he does quite the damage when he can perform a hit, but he just needs so much support to reliably do that damage - and even then he`s still pretty slow and clumsy in doing that. I always thought of Teneb, the Harvester as a nice support card in a well functioning deck - no comparison to commanders like Ghave, Guru of Spores where the whole deck is build to combo with your commander and instantly win you the game. So maybe increasing your creature count again would be a good idea. Gaddock Teeg really shouts for a comeback after you removed so many high mana enchantments and he is just such a pain for you opponents. Pernicious Deed could also be a nice inclusion as a mass removal for anything if you got heavy problems with your opponents enchantments/artifacts/creatures. If you play with 3 other players, better include Syphon Mind instead of Harmonize. If you are playing more creatures again, you should consider more mana ramp creatures so that you are faster than with your old `Big reanimator list`. Other than classics like, Birds of Paradise,Avacyn's Pilgrim, Elvish Mystic,Llanowar Elves cards like Weathered Wayfarer or Hermit Druid could do a nice job. The latter filling your GY very efficiently at the same time. This could be an opening for a Living Death again maybe?
I'm really sorry if I`m criticising too much on your recent list right now. If you're telling me, that you performed much better after you changed to the control build than absolutely stick to that! It's just, for me Teneb as an Commander is not so well fit for a control build. He really shines when the deck runs smooth without him and he can save the day recurring a pretty fatty creature on any GY after creature mass removals cleared the field.
Never apologize for your feedback. It is more than welcomed!
Man, you must really love my old reanimator list. I swear I am trying to find it. I love this deck as a control deck. It just adds so much more dynamics and flexibility to game play, rather than fill up the yard then mass reanimate and gg.
Living Death is an awesome card. I seriously love this card to death (ha, pun). First of all, everyone sacraficing creatures is a board wipe that gets past both hexproof AND indestructible. If that isn't a reason to run that card, I don't know what is. And reanimating a full yard of creatures ten times better than your opponents is just great. Here are the following problems with Living Death:
Clunky without a full yard.
The lack of haste in these colors suck. Your creatures can't swing right away, so actually it isn't just GG if you win, you have to wait a full rotation to go in for the kill. This means your opponents can kill your dudes, work a way to survive, or even kill you with their own creatures. And even if you can work around this with a haste outlet, your options are Akroma's Memorial, which is too expensive, or Concordant Crossroads which is situational in most cases.
Living Death shines if you can manipulate you opponent's yards Scavenging Ooze
Overall, the card is fantastic in a deck with 40+ creatures. I am going to see if Hallowed Burial is a better mass removal option this week and get back to you. If I decide to keep death, I will definitely need to build around it more.
I agree with Dimir House Guard. Pod makes him the obvious inclusion, but he is a good tutor in general (He also grabs Harmonize). I think Academy Rector is a super good card and I have been considering adding her back in. But keep in mind she can't be abused with Teneb, since she is exiled due to her own ability. But it is a good thought to sac her and grab Survival.
Here is the issue with running cards such as Birthing Pod and more dredge-like cards. The more creatures you add in this list with more dependency on the yard, this deck begins to turn into a Karador, Ghost Chieftain deck. The main reason to play Teneb is so you have a win con in a control deck. Teneb in essence can hit for lots of damage but if NEED BE can get a creature out. The reanimation I have in this deck is more for reach rather than theme or gameplan. There is a difference in playing out of your graveyard with Karador and using your graveyard as a resource with Teneb. Birthing Pod is an awesome card. I would love to run it, but I would have to play more creatures, and there we would start to run into dangerous territory of running more creatures than instant-speed answers. But maybe that is a tune we need to make to the current build. The other problem with Pod is that it isn't a stand alone card. If you add Pod, then you need to add Pod good cards. Less utility creatures and more ETB creatures. Also, Revilliark and Karmic Guide are an auto include along with Pod. On that note, as is Avenger of Zendikar and Craterhoof Behemoth. You see what I'm saying? Many of these cards open doors to other cards that increase their power level, and soon the deck starts evolving around these additions, rather than a strategy. If you tune this list to Birthing Pod, it will start looking similar to a Karador deck. I think the challenge is finding the middle ground with cards such as Pod, Living Death, Survival, and others, where you can use them efficiently in your game plan while keeping the ability to interact with the board with instants and control magic.
I usually never really depend on Teneb. He is kind of served as a alternative win condition most of the time. Lately however, I have played games where I could suit him up and go in for the win. This usually doesn't happen. But it would be nice to be able to set him up to kill in two turns, but most of the times the equipment and pump effects he used can just go on another creature that can go to town. Gaddock Teeg in this list would require a LOT of tuning, and call for a creature heavy deck, which brings us to the original problem of being more like Karador than a Teneb list. Gaddock is strong but his strengths need to be maximized. He also needs to be more built around with protection effects. Again, a case of one card needing multiple other cards to make it REALLY good, rather than just good.
Syphon Mind is a interesting choice. It is situational unfortunately. I mean, best case scenario, three opponents discard a card and you draw three cards. The fewer players, the worse the card becomes. While Harmonize, best and worse case scenario, you draw three cards. The interaction seems great but I am not sure situational conditions are worth possibly getting rid of three cards from your opponents, probably none of which would in most cases be useful for you (i.e. Reanimation fodder).
That is true. If I add more creatures, then ramp creatures need to come in. Of course, the problem again with more creatures being added, this becomes less control and more Pod.
I seriously need to find this list for you. You have been persistent and you, my friend, have earned a Big Reanimator list!! I think to sum up everything I said above, the challenge with Teneb is finding the line of balance, where I can run maximum number of creatures and creature-matter spells to us reanimation to its fullest, but also have the highest capacity of control element so I can have a more stable game. Having Teneb as a control deck means not just I can control the board, but also really make my game plan much more solid. I think its just about finding the balance, which I am doing to this day.
I'll make you a deal. If I don't find my old list by the end of this week, I'll just draft up a new one over the weekend. Does that sound like a plan? This list will have Pod and big reanimation spells, as well as a fine tuned removal package. Total, all-in aggro/midrange. What do you say?
I really like the report section. Thank you for that!
Also, no new set review? I played at the pre release this weekend and think Dromoka, the Eternal would be cool.
Here, I'll post the set preview! And thank you so much for you kind words!
==Fate Reforged Preview==
Ugin, the Spirit Dragon: Ugin is really awesome. I think a Planeswalker on par with Nicol Bolas that we can play in our deck is really crazy. His +2 is solid removal and his –X can be a control board wipe and really destroy any and all troublesome permanents. His final can really propel you in the game and get you enough advantage to take over. I am definitely adding him in the Superfriend’s build. I don’t know what I would cut for him in my main control deck. He seems really good, so perhaps we will do some testing in the future.
Daghatar, the Adamant: I love this guy flavor wise and I am super happy Junk is getting a bigger pool of generals. Problem with this guy is I look at him and I think he is a weaker Ghave, Guru of Spores. I don’t think he is a better control general than Teneb, and he would require a little more build around to be… well, adamant.
Citadel Siege: I think this would be a good combat card, but I think there are better ways of manipulating combat. On the other hand, it makes Teneb a three turn clock and can make other creatures pretty deadly too.
Dragonscale General: I don’t think we run enough creatures to make her super relevant.
Lotus-Eye Mystics: This makes me reconsider running a Enchantment matters deck. This is a super awesome support card, and being a ETB trigger means we can abuse it with reanimation. If I stick with the enchantment theme, this guy will make the cut.
Monastery Mentor: Why is this set really good? Seriously, there are many cards that theoretically are awesome. This guy makes the non-creature removal and such very relevant. Also, enchantments. May consider him.
Rally the Ancestors: I don’t like this card for this deck, one because you need a sac outlet if you wanted to reuse your revived creatures, and two it exiles itself. It also doesn’t grant haste or anything of that nature. I think if it granted haste to the revived creatures, this card would solve the problem with Living Death.
Crux of Fate: HA! That is cool. A board wipe that kills everyone except Teneb. On one hand, really cool. But on the other hand, super situational. I don’t think I would need to clear blockers for Teneb because of flying, and I have spot removal for that. And even if I had to mass board wipe, I would probably just cast a regular spell and kill Teneb with it. This card is one mana more to save your general. It maybe worth it, but again, it is a very situational card that best case scenario is awesome, worst case scenario is horrible. Also, what if my opponent has a Dragon? Crux won’t do much to clear Teneb’s path.
Dark Deal: This is actually ridiculously awesome. Players discarding their hands means REANIMATION targets! The draw is also very relevant as well. I want to play this. Windfall now in our colors is actually pretty broken. So, Dark Deal in.
Ghastly Conscription: Clunky spells are clunky. This could be a cool Living Death type effect that is just very mana intensive. But I think if I were to run this, I would pay two extra mana for Rise of the Dark Realms, and that’s getting into some rough territory.
Soulflayer: Cool name, but ew, I don’t like exiling cards in this deck. Which sucks because delve is really powerful.
Frontier Siege: Whenever a creatures enters the battlefield, it can fight another creatures… Oh wait… it has to have flying… well its not THAT good now. Again, theoretically good dragon card that only synergizes with Teneb. Waaa!
Destructor Dragon: I don’t understand why it has to die for its ability to trigger. Still, card seems super good.
Shamanic Revelation: Seems REALLY good, but I don’t think I have enough creatures.
Whisperwood Elemental: Okay, so this card is REALLY awesome, but where it shines is in a Savra or Shattergang Attrition type deck, not in a control deck.
Temur Sabertooth: Bouncing creatures seems really awesome. This could protect Teneb and other high profile creatures, as well as re-use ETB effects. I may want to adjust my creature base to abuse this but this guy seems awesome AND protects himself.
Dromoka, the Eternal: In theory: a 5/5 dragon that makes Teneb a three turn clock. In reality: before it benefits Teneb, she pumps herself before she pumps Teneb. Now, moving away from voltroning out Teneb, she can pump your small dudes and make them threats. Coffin Queen becomes real all of a sudden. Slow and clunky, not sure if it is worth an inclusion.
Overall, this is an incredible set, and I haven’t seen this much diversity from a set in some time. All of my decks are getting upgrades, and this is no exception. The power level of this set is pretty on point, so I am super happy with the set overall. I am going to wait a bit to make any changes to the list until I test out the new cards, as well as the possibility of removing the Enchantment Matters theme. I will report soon. Carry on everyone!
I'll get it to you by this Sunday, you have my word!
Dark Deal would mostly be included for the draw. I think the discard is just a bonus. Mindslicer is great if you're running a good number of sac outlets.
I was thinking of Temur Sabertooth more for saving creatures from removal, rather than abusing ETB triggers. I seems on paper like a good piece of utility, so I'll have to test it out. I do agree about Restoration Angel, although I may need more ETB triggers.
List change time! These are tentative changes and not necessarily permanent. We shall see how the deck evolves in the next couple of weeks.
Courser of Kruphixc -> Sakura-Tribe Elder
I felt like I needed a much more solid ramp card. The life gain was wroth a merit, but with the Archangel, the small life gain here and there isn’t that good.
Dimir House Guard -> Kozilek, Butcher of Truth
The skeleton was a good tutoring tool, but after a while it was a dead weight in my hand. I felt like I needed a much more solid card advantage machine, so I threw in Kozilek. A huge monster that can prevent myself from decking and graveyard hate, but also net me four cards.
Unexpected Absence -> Merciless Eviction
Unexpected Absence in my games was, well, unexpectedly absent. It was clucnky and I never had the mana open to make it extremely useful. I also have had a problem with indestructible permanents and trying to get rid of troublesome non-creature permanents. I was going to run Austere Command , but I want to try this for now.
Promise of Power -> Dark Deal
Better mass draw with less life loss and mana cost. It is a better draw spell overall and can give reanimation fuel.
Sterling Grove -> Umezawa's Jitte
The enchantment package was beginning to be a little lack luster. When I did end up setting it up, it was strong, but did not have much synergy with the rest of the deck. I decided to switch out the enchantment matter cards with just more solid control cards. Jitte is jitte, and it was a solid way of ticking Teneb up, removing creatures, and gaining life if need be.
Privileged Position -> Seedborn Muse
Muse will give me more reach in turns and allow me to tap out for my turn emptying my hand, then casting instants and responding to opponents play. Overall, being a better control player.
Sphere of Safety -> Resolute Archangel
Archangel will help with the amount of life loss this deck nets, and will be a strong card with the general reanimation effects. I am very excited about this card and we shall see how it runs in the future.
All of these cards are brand new so I need some more testing, but we shall see how they play out in the next couple of weeks.
Also, @Park3r, I am still drafting your list together. It should be live by Tuesday, and I will PM you the list as well as post it here. I am sorry for the delay, but I actually had more homework and actual work work than I anticipated.
Love this primer! I've officially joined the teneb train it's honestly one of my favorite decks now.
1 question : grisly salvage. I run it and I'm never upset to see it. There have been times where I throw a good kill spell in there but about 85 % I hit a good target for reanimation

Hey! Thank you so much for your kind words.
Grisly Salvage is not a question Just kidding, I think the card is great in creature-heavy decks. The card is a little odd, since you want to be able to dump a large creature in the yard, but get a land or small utility dude also. I personally don't run enough creatures to make it viable in the current list (I would probably only hit profit 50% of the time). I feel like this would be a card better suited in a Karador-Style build. If its been working for you, I think you should stick to it. I would like to see your list also to see your creature:non-creature ratio.
However, if you wanted some more self-dredge/reach, Life from the Loam maybe a card to consider because it will hit you a land regardless (if you're running fetches) and you can continuously dredge yourself. Salvage only nets a one time use. If you are looking for similar effects, try that?

In regard to the Teneb Train, Welcome Aboard!
I would love to post my decklist! Ill get to it within a few days. Just go easy on me with the criticism, building competitive edh decks have never been my strong suit lol
Ya that grisly salvage wasn't a question was it? lol I do run a creature heavy build I feel like, but I also run a lot of early game creatures for dorks (birds, avacyn pilgrim, deathrite, llanowar elves, bloom tender) and mill/land searchers/ (satyr wayfinder, sylvan ranger, probably more im forgetting). The problem with having these dorks is ive become too reliant on them and when someone early board wipes, I only have 4/5 mana to play with when i should be at 6/7. So im excited to get my list on here so you guys can help me cut things that arent needed.
I didn't even think about life from the loam, I definitely agree that is a great addition, and will be getting one to add to my list. I always struggle on land, and bringing back a fetch for some shuffling and a few basics for easy land grabs after milling myself would be such a great addition.
One thing i've noticed is that im too quick to lay my elesh norn, grand cerobite, without having a good board state and it gets taken out of the game too quickly. Today I was facing my brothers marath deck and i could definitely see some things wrong with my playstyle , just from lack of practice using this type of commander. An early Sigarda, host of herons caused me to board wipe early and then from there it was just me trying to dig out of a hole in sand. I feel like there is some draw power that my deck is missing, so Like i said i can't wait to get started.
I have some cards in mind that are in my deck that im thinking of removing for other things:
Batterskull- Its a good card yes, but it never really HELPS. Sure it's a nice card and everything, but it never helps me win. If im going to win it has nothing to do with a batterskull, and if i lose the batterskull only helped delay the inevitable. Crown of convergence- I put it in as another way to filter what i was getting but it just lacks everything I need it to be. I already have a sensei's diving top so i feel like having this is pointless.
Looking forward to working with you guys! I have to say that cards that have really impressed me: Victimize and Rune-scarred Demon
Sorry its getting busy at work and I dont have time to type out my lands base lol Ill finish that up later. This is the deck as of right now, wanting to cut Genesis hydra, crown of convergence and batterskull
Okay, lets get to work! First of all, thank you for sharing your decklist. I would like to know what budget you're in (or if budget isn't a problem), but I'll just throw out some thoughts and let me know what you think on each. Again, these are just suggestions. Take what you want and leave what you don't
Genesis Hydra -> Harmonize, Erebos, God of the Dead, or Promise of Power: If you're looking for card advantage, you need more draw in this deck. You have about zero engines for drawing cards and refueling your hand, so I would look into that. Harmonize is a solid, cheap card if you'd like to look into it.
Crown of Convergence -> Sylvan Library: If you're looking for filtering card draw, then Library is the way to go. It also can draw you extra cards if you need it in a pinch. I think Mirri's Guile is another alternative, but I believe Library and Guile cost the same (money wise).
Batterskull -> Sword of Feast and Famine: This is a must card with Teneb. The sword makes Teneb a three turn clock, but also you can stack your triggers so your opponent discards a card, untap your lands, THEN you can reanimate a creature. It gives you a lot of extra reach, and protects him from any black removal.
Here are some other suggestions from looking over your list.
Phyrexian Revoker -> Voidstone Gargoyle: If this is the effect you're looking for, Revoker is good, but this guy is better. I know your curve is starting to get a little high, but consider it.
In Garruk's Wake: If you need a boardwipe, there are many better options. If planeswalker's are a concern for you, I would run Merciless Eviction. If you just wanted another boardwipe, you can do the following: Wrath of God Living Death Austere Command
You may really like Living Death in this deck. With the amount of self mill and creatures, I think you can net a lot of profit.
Birthing Pod: This card just got banned in Modern, so the price dipped a little bit if you'd like to pick one up. With the amount of creatures you're running, it would be great. However, I would adjust your creature curve. You have:
4 1 mana creature(s)
9 2 mana creature(s)
2 3 mana creature(s)
5 4 mana creature(s)
1 5 mana creature(s)
6 6 mana creature(s)
4 7 mana creature(s)
1 8 mana creature(s)
An ideal Birthing Pod curve, with the amount of creatures you have, looks like this:
3 1 mana creature(s)
6 2 mana creature(s)
7 3 mana creature(s)
5 4 mana creature(s)
5 5 mana creature(s)
3 6 mana creature(s)
3 7 mana creature(s)
1 8 mana creature(s)
See how you peak with three mana creatures, then slowly go down after 4 and 5? 3 mana is where your strong utility creatures will be. Dauntless Escort, Wood Elves, Farhaven Elf, Reclamation Sage. These are all three mana slots. I also think a Grand Abolisher should find his way into your list. Again, a lot of this curve adjustment is if you decide to run Pod. If not, you should still look at your curve and bring some of the two mana/one mana creatures and fill the three mana slots.
For right now, those are the major suggestions. Take what you need and leave the rest. I look forward to seeing more of you and your build! All the best!
Okay, lets get to work! First of all, thank you for sharing your decklist. Alrighty so, I was totally thinking about removing the hydra the other day for my draw spell so im glad we are on the same age. Harmonize will work nicely since i feel like 3 black may be tight for my deck sometimes.
I like removing the revoker for that gargoyle. Ive honestly never seen that before! And the body on it is a LOT better than the stupid revoker also, so im game.
Sylvan library i totally agree with so I will get one of those no problem.
I didn't realize how well you could stack the triggers on sword of feast and famine! thats insane!!! definitely a good addition.
I also have been looking into merciless eviction to add as well so that will definitely go in.
I don't like adding birthing pod in just yet, just due to the fact that there is so much removal of artifacts/enchantments in my playgroup that i would never get to use it more than once. But later on maybe. I have used it in past edh and it honestly didn't help me too much. I was never thankful I got birthing pod because it always was taken out the first two turns and there was always something better to get back from the grave.
I can fix the curve a little though. I can take out llanowar elves and the ranger and add in wood elves and add some other stuff.
Since im dropping the 9 drop board wipe, I feel like decreee of pain should just be living death. so ill make that change as well.
anyone run phyrexian arena? I feel like I want to add this card in as well. Am I trying to add too much draw or have people had good results with this one?
Edit: Also concerning my budget, I have somewhat of a good resource to use. My deck has fetches and shocks and stuff like that, I just can't get dual lands just yet or buy all the filter lands that i need. But everything else is pretty much game.
I think you can keep Decree of Pain, since it works nice evading counterspells. It is 8 mana, but it is flexible and bi-modal. That in itself has enough to warrant a slot in the deck. But you should throw Living Death in there.
Phyrexian Arena is super good. I would not hesitate in running that as well. Also, try Erebos, God of the Dead. Its a card draw engine immune to most removal and can be recurred with Teneb.
Psh, Duals are overrated I've been playing Teneb for three years now and I just recently got them. I got two in Mint Condition at a Grand Prix by selling all my bulk rares, and the Bayou was a beat up one I got for 60 bucks, then I altered the boarders with paint to make it look better. You get the dual lands when you can, but don't go out of your way to grab them. They help smooth the deck out, but you can make due.
For the filterlands, you don't really need those. I've been considering cutting mine because honestly they've bene super clunky early game. I would run the Temples (Templice of Silence, Temple of Plenty, and Temple of Malady). Scry does some wonders in setting up your draws. I would also consider Painlands for the Filterland slots. They add colorless too and the pain is worth it. If you do consider painlands, your life total is going to go down a little bit. I suggest Courser of Kruphix as a way to recover the small points, and Restoration Angel is an amazing reanimation target.
Mana bases can be made on a budget, and strong ones too. With mana bases without duals, you need lots of land ramp to make due with the fixing you have. I would consider a Chromatic Lantern if you can find one.

I did have Erebos in the deck but I honestly didn't like it in the deck after a few match ups where I had it in play, but at the same time I might put it back in just due to the no lifegain in the deck, thats super relevant. Plus the deck now will work better so Ill try to go back to it.
Ill get an arena as well to put in as well so i have a lot of work to do lol
Im also going to try to work in oracle of mul daya in the deck. It was originally in the mayael deck but it hasn't helped me at all with the deck, and ive even tutored for it on multiple games lol
I do not have any of the pain lands, so i can add that to my list of things to get, and I need to get 2 more scry lands which i might be able to pick up today actually. Do you think homeward path is worth an inclusion? I have it in the deck as well as mutavault but neither have ever came in handy.
I would definitely add Murmuring Bosk. That card is a must in these colors. I also would try to throw in a Mistveil Plains. You can take out the Razorverge Thicket and the Mutavault. Try that to make your base a little more solid.

living death is disgusting! AND AMAZING! I won at 4 life with it! I'll post my new deck list and details of the match up later in the week. I faced an omnath and a linvala deck. It was super intense and super fun
Upped my land base as well with some new land as well.
I don't think I will post another review until the end of the month, just with exams and such, it will be hard to write up an entire report. I'll keep you all updated. Happy Harvesting!
Ob nixilis, the unshacked rampaging baloths
wanting to take these cards out because they honestly never really help. The demon comes out tool late and never really sticks around, he's too weak to really block what I want it to block.
Rampaging is great but it NEVER stays out long enough to matter, ANY game. And sure it's a reanimation target but.. its just bleh. Both of these guys will go to tasigur once I get good replacements. Im hoping to get a seedborn muse because him + Geth, lord of the vault is just STUPID good. I grabbed an opponents seedborn with Geth in the epic Omnath/Linvala game I was in, and It was nuts until they killed it. Like seriously, It is DISGUSTING lol
Added wrath of god- traded for damnation so my tasigur deck would have a good board wipe lol living death- duh lol sylvan library- duh lol life from the loam- pretty much duh tortured existence- i want to try this to get an early reanimation target in the graveyard or exchange of a dork late game for a big drop if need be, as well as feed good targets for Teneb. Altar of dementia- May seem kinda of weird, but with Geth + Teneb, I feel like milling the opponent as well as throwing a creature with a good etb effect in the grave ( RUNE-SCARRED DEMON, ETERNAL WITNESS, I COULD GO ON FOREVER GUYS ).
In the crazy game described above, if i would have a sac outlet, I would have killed a lot sooner, because I was dealing damage with Teneb but not having any late game targets due to everything already being on the field or things getting removed from the game.
Needless to say, I played the new deck against my brothers zurgo deck the next day and I SMASHED him. Like disgustingly smashed, brutal beatdown lol
turn 2 grisly salvage into turn 3 animate dead is something everyone needs to be aware of and a part of lol
Hi, thanks for this awesome primer it really helped me build a list that I finally liked with Teneb. Currently I am running a more control list and I was wondering if you could give me some suggestions on what to add or remove. Anyways, here's the list:

Hey there welcome! It's nice to see another teneb player. I'm not the best at control decks but ill give you a breakdown of what i think you can afford to lose:
journey should be - kodama's reach or cultivate,. having a land come into play tapped instead of in your hand is huge, especially if you get it in the early stages of set up.
Temur/grim/wilt leaf- Sure these cards are good in their own way but i feel like they dont really flow with the deck. You only run 23 creatures so grim doesn't seem like its gonna work very well.
Temur just seems weird... i mean sure you can bounce and block with indestructible but if you're a control deck you aren't worried about a creature on the board anyways.
the wilt leaf is nice but doesn't seem like it fits with only 23 creatures. Sure it can buff other creatures but it doesn't seem worth it unless you could swarm them, and the discard is nice but... idk.. just seems like you could do better lol
birthing pod same story, not enough creatures to really do what you want i feel like.
I dislike artisan because rune-scarred demon needs to be there, no doubt. it NEEDS to be in the deck. Its amazing lol
recollect i jsut dont like, i would do noxious revival if i was going to run something like that.
Thanks for the suggestions, first off I'd like to preface this post with some game reports. I ran the list above (minus the Artisan of Kozilek , plus a Resolute Archangel). I'd read your suggestions before hand but the games were to soon for me to edit much besides one card, however I noted the performance of certain cards. I won only one game but all four games were very close.
Cards performances:
Recollect, I'd rather this be Regrowth but this has performed amazingly for me I was able to fetch the Deathrender from my graveyard and take control of the game Game 3.
Birthing Pod, was okay but too easily countered by things such as an Icy Manipulator for too little of an effect. (The Icy Manipulator tapped me down for too long for me to recover from until he cast Rite of Replication on Wilt-Leaf Liege.
Wilt-Leaf Liege, this card as you said is a major disappointment in this build and I need to find something else to replace it.
Temur-Sabertooth, was an abosolute beast when I got him online, but he seems like a win more, and I'll need further testing to determine whether or not he makes the list
Grim Haruspex, by FAR the weakest card in my deck definitely deserves a cut, perhaps Dauntless Escort instead to protect from boardwiped
I'm looking to acquire a Rune-scarred demon and some Lightning greaves plus the ramp spells. but I need to know what else to get before i actively seek them out or order them. I might post a more detailed write up tomorrow but for now I'm exhausted and going to get some sleep.
Cheers,
Lordmidget

You are totally right! ISB thank you so much for helping me draft up this new list. You are a life saver. What do you want for Christmas?
It use to be a Superfriends build, but I recently shifted metas and it was much too fragile. If you are interested in the Superfriends build, look in the Extras section. Thank you for dropping by! Please let me know what else I can help you with.
This is true. The new version is up and the Superfriends build is now in the extras for those who are interested. Thank you for stopping by! Would you like anything else posted?

I agree with Dimir House Guard. Pod makes him the obvious inclusion, but he is a good tutor in general (He also grabs Harmonize). I think Academy Rector is a super good card and I have been considering adding her back in. But keep in mind she can't be abused with Teneb, since she is exiled due to her own ability. But it is a good thought to sac her and grab Survival.
Survival is awesome, agreed. I think I would run Diabolic Intent before I ran Shred memory.

Also, no new set review? I played at the pre release this weekend and think Dromoka, the Eternal would be cool.
Here, I'll post the set preview! And thank you so much for you kind words!
Merciless Executioner: We don’t run Fleshbag, so I don’t think we’ll run this.
So here are the following cards I am definitely adding:
Temur Sabertooth
Dark Deal
Cards I am considering:
Lotus-Eye Mystics
Monastery Mentor
Ugin, the Spirit Dragon
Overall, this is an incredible set, and I haven’t seen this much diversity from a set in some time. All of my decks are getting upgrades, and this is no exception. The power level of this set is pretty on point, so I am super happy with the set overall. I am going to wait a bit to make any changes to the list until I test out the new cards, as well as the possibility of removing the Enchantment Matters theme. I will report soon. Carry on everyone!

EDIT: Also, 1,000 posts! Woohoo!!

Acidic Slime -> Qasali Pridemage
I needed a more stable artifact/enchantment hate. It also can’t be countered expect by Stifle effects.
Unexpected Absence -> Merciless Eviction
Sterling Grove -> Umezawa's Jitte
Privileged Position -> Seedborn Muse

1 question : grisly salvage. I run it and I'm never upset to see it. There have been times where I throw a good kill spell in there but about 85 % I hit a good target for reanimation
Thanks you very much DarkNightCavalier for the Sig.

Thanks you very much DarkNightCavalier for the Sig.
If you just wanted another boardwipe, you can do the following:
Wrath of God
Living Death
Austere Command
You may really like Living Death in this deck. With the amount of self mill and creatures, I think you can net a lot of profit.
Birthing Pod: This card just got banned in Modern, so the price dipped a little bit if you'd like to pick one up. With the amount of creatures you're running, it would be great. However, I would adjust your creature curve. You have:

Thanks you very much DarkNightCavalier for the Sig.

I have it in the deck as well as mutavault but neither have ever came in handy.

living death is disgusting!

Happy Harvesting!

wanting to take these cards out because they honestly never really help.
Added wrath of god- traded for damnation so my tasigur deck would have a good board wipe lol
living death- duh lol
sylvan library- duh lol
life from the loam- pretty much duh
tortured existence- i want to try this to get an early reanimation target in the graveyard or exchange of a dork late game for a big drop if need be, as well as feed good targets for Teneb.
Still trying to get my land base up to par, so ill keep working on it.
Need to add temple of malady and llanowar wastes, as well as get me a murmuring bosk.

Hey there welcome! It's nice to see another teneb player. I'm not the best at control decks but ill give you a breakdown of what i think you can afford to lose:
swiftfoot boots should be lightning greaves or maybe even play both.
sword of light and shadow should be sword of feast and famine
journey should be - kodama's reach or cultivate,. having a land come into play tapped instead of in your hand is huge, especially if you get it in the early stages of set up.
Let me know what you think and we'll chat it up
Thanks you very much DarkNightCavalier for the Sig.
Cards performances:
I'm looking to acquire a Rune-scarred demon and some Lightning greaves plus the ramp spells. but I need to know what else to get before i actively seek them out or order them. I might post a more detailed write up tomorrow but for now I'm exhausted and going to get some sleep.
Cheers,
Lordmidget
