The thing is more and more people are playing Armageddon and similar effects these days. I'd be very wary of playing a Mana Severance to thin the deck... Timetwister could also bring Belcher back.
The thing is: Mana Severance just makes my draws that much better when I'm already winning/storming. And I've decided not to run belcher, as it makes drawing it super awkward wiithout severance. I have decided, however, that Vendillion Clique has earned a spot, because fixing my draws with infin* capsize/clique, it makes drawing a wincon better, and helps make sure the path is clear to storm out. And Mana Short has brought positive testing as well.
I like the Mana Severance idea. More than half the time I spiral into the late game I get 5 islands and 2 spells. Unless you manage to delve away alot of lands early on you will keep spiralling hands that are flooded. Mana Short seems alright, it's a less versatile Turnabout but the lower cost might be very important.
I'm still trying out mana short, as I play in a control heavy meta, where I want my combo to happen. Vendillion Clique has shown positive testing as well!! (On my phone atm, not going to put card text on). One of my close friends has also been suggesting to try out enter the infinite. I laughed at first, but when I'm "going infinite" with mana, and don't have the card draw/cantrips to get there, maybe? I'm also anxious to test out wipe away. Thoughts?
The problem with Enter the Infinite is that it's only playable when you're kinda already winning. With the new mulligan, drawing that is like having a 6 card hand. I can't like that...
I'd love to see the updated list you're testing right now, dude. I'm starting to get in to french edh, and I just so happen to play high tide in legacy so you can just imagine how interested I was when I saw the thread title.
@tersx here's my current list. I recently cut Temporal Manipulation, so I'm only running Temporal Mastery and Capture of Jingzhou now.
Occasionally this deck becomes a Talrand deck or an Erayo deck depending on your draws ^^
Awesome, @spastika. Looks like your list isn't as dedicated to the mill plan as DrDiabetes'. Not even a Brain Freeze in there. Is going for the storm win that tricky with a deck of one-ofs?
Milling isn't my ideal way to win. I try to win every game with a storm, and if I mill them via brain freeze/tutelage, then so be it. I'll also be just as satisfied with a temporal fissure win as well.
At times, it can be a lot to handle, knowing which spells to cast when, but overall, I'd say it's "not for someone who hasn't played competitive dc before".
Yeah I don't like milling for many reasons. An Eldrazi puts you back to square one, and more importantly delve and reanimator will get a boost from your mill unless you mill their entire deck in one turn. You don't want to help Arbiter or Tasigur cast their Digs and Cruises two turns earlier.
With my deck I try and win with storm but not necessarily infinite storm. A temporal fissure for 5 is enough to put a control player way behind for you to then take over. Fissure for a finite amount is the most common wincon in this deck, followed by blue sun's zenith for infinite. I don't like brain freeze because it's too hard to generate enough storm to mill 80 cards or so. It's a useless card unless I have infinite storm, whereas temporal fissure or blue suns' zenith are always good.
Going for a storm win is occasionally tricky but we have a lot of draw power in this deck to get us there and tutors like Merchant Scroll and Intuition to find our key cards. Intuition sets up our most potent combo of High Tide + Time Spiral. You need to have one of those in your hand so you can flashback the other. The idea is for the third card to be more of a threat than the other two so that your opponent is forced to give you either High Tide or Time Spiral. The third card is usually Palinchron. You can check the link in my sig for some information on how I play my deck.
That's fair, but honestly, most of my wins have happened because of brain freeze. When storm is up to ~22, it is only 1U, and then a well placed blue sun for a small amount gets there. Let's look at it this way:
99 cards in a deck
Starting hand of 7, so cards in deck is now 92, assuming they didn't mulligan.
At least 4-6 turns have gone by, so for the sake of time, let's say there's 86 cards left in the deck, assuming they've played zero card draw spells. Being down to only ~20 cards, they might still play a delve spell, if they haven't milled it yet. And even so, that's fine. Less cards they need to draw to lose. And Sphinx's Tutelage is also great to help this cause as well.
No need to get snapcaster unless you have excess mana and want 1 extra storm for 2 mana, or plan to flashback something other than high tide or spiral. Sometimes opponents accidentally give you the high tide instead of spiral (when you go tide, spiral, palinchron) so your high tide isn't exiled for good, but if you snapcaster you definitely exile tide.
If you really say most of your wins come from Brain Freeze then I'll give it a go myself.
I wouldn't add Command Beacon to this Island-centric deck. Mikokoro seems way better as the 1-of not island land.
I like Brain Freeze because it's cheap. And it's not hard at all to cast it twice the same turn, so you don't need that high of a storm count. If you're playing against Animar or Eldrazi decks, you can Brain Freeze yourself to try and find Time Spiral, Mind's Desire or whatever to flashback.
Mikokoro, Center of the Sea seems better in a more control-ish build, like what spastika has. I play enough cantrips that I dont really need it on a land, and giving my control-opponent more cards. Although, I will say, this is another deck where I've been considering Alhammarret's Archive because of all the card draw we have. And honestly, there are games where I'm happy exiling my ht w/jace or Snapcaster when I'm going to win that turn, ya know? And worst case scenario, I have to dig up Extraplaner Lens along with Phyrexian Metamorph, and go from there.
I fear I think Mikokoro is good exactly on the opposite kind of deck. More controlish builds rely more on card advantage, so Mikokoro is a risky play. But in a combo deck like this, you don't really care if your opponents draw cards, as long as you draw into your threats/counters. I fearlessly activate Mikokoro in this deck. It can also help you win immediately with Brain Freeze, although that's minor.
I won several games now by Brain Freezing twice on the same turn. Be it with a Remand, Snapcaster or Jace, it happens a lot. Main wincons are Temporal Fissure and Mind's Desire, and that leads to easy brain freezes win. I've also Brain Freezed myself on turn 3 once to be able to activate and save my Jace from removal.
This is a list I've made for multiplayer. I do realise this is a 1v1 subforum but there's no other relevant, living thread discussing monoblue High Tide in Commander.
I don't play any Commander, but my friends do and they want me to play with them. The idea behind this brew is to be as Instant-speed as reasonably possible. There are only 20 Sorcery-speed spells in this deck. If I play a non-Instant, it's because it's doing great things.
The Polymorph/Eldrazi interaction is really just to give myself another shot if the combo goes awry which is really likely considering I'm probably going to be targeted in the play-group. Like I said though, I don't play Commander. Is this even a good idea, or is there a better way to accomplish what it is I'm trying to do?
I play Neo-academy in Vintage which is a Storm/Belcher combo/control deck. I would like for this to be about the same thing.
I think I want to cut Echo Mage just because he makes the Eldrazi-recovery worse. But he's so good at going infinite.
