This is the official sign-up thread/rules thread for the February Cockatrice tournament I'll be running.
Disclaimer: (Yes, I'm putting this at the top for a reason.)
I love playing, I don't mind running this, blah blah... That being said, I am volunteering my time and energy to try to ensure this thing goes off smoothly. Please, PLEASE help me with that. If you can resolve an in-game problem, do it yourself or ask the spectators. If you feel butthurt about something that others would consider trivial, please just let it go. Don't cheat, don't try to break the system, be on time, honor your game committments as much as you're able... My goal is to do as little as possible with this thing so I don't get so burned out that I don't want to do another one. Most of you folks are awesome, wonderful individuals that I'm not worried about, but there's a couple few that like to ruin it for everyone. Please, don't be that guy. Thanks.
1: I'd like to get this done sooner rather than later. That means that if everyone gets their matches done before the week you're allotted, we can start the next round that much sooner. So, not a big deal if you wait til the last minute but if you can, please try to have your match finished and sent to me as soon as possible so we can keep this going at a pretty quick clip.
2: Feel free to post match results on this thread or to PM me, I accept both inputs ^.^
4: NO PRIVATE MATCHES! I can't really enforce this, so it's up to you guys, but I'd really like to avoid private matches. Spectators can help verify if something wonky happened, can help with rules questions, etc etc. Don't show all cards in hand, but please allow spectators. Spectators! Don't say anything about the gamestate unless asked! If some random person comes in that's not on here, someone please let them know it's a tournament match and to keep their mouths shut unless asked a question.
5: Don't be a jerk! Really, this is a for fun/testing tournament, there's no prizes on the line, there's no DCI points, etc. There's no reason to get butthurt over something stupid, to needle or troll your opponent, all that. We've been really blessed with a pretty awesome community for 1v1 here online, and I'd like ot see that trend continue, so be courteous, kind, and patient to the utmost of your abilities. Obviously follow all the rules, but this will help make for a much more tolerable event.
6: Alright, have fun! If I missed anything, or if you think I should do something a little differently please let me know.
Rules:
-This will be a Duel Commander tournament, recognizing the official rules and banlist of www.duelcommander.com. I'm not going to repost them here, I assume most of you can click a link and follow directions ^.^ This does mean that the January bannings (Zur/Oath/Derevi/NO/Monolith) will be in effect
-This will be run on the Woogerworks server of the Cockatrice program. if you wish to participate you must be a registered user on Woogerworks as well as a registered user here on mtgsalvation.com. Only legal users of the MTGS forum may participate. If at any one point a participant is suspended or banned from the site, that participant will be automatically disqualified. They are free to appeal the moderator's decision though, as per the site policies.
-This tournament will have 5 rounds of Swiss, cut to top 8, cut to top 4. Pairings will be based on match wins for the Swiss accept for the first parings, obviously those are random. For the cut to top 8 tiebreakers will be decided 1st by opponents match win percentage, then if still tied by players' game win percentage. Top 8 pairings will be bracketed, 1st plays 8th, 5th plays 4th, then the winner of those matches plays each other. 2nd plays 7th and 3rd plays 6th, then the winner of those plays each other. Than the winner of those last 2 sets is in the finals. Placings determined by match wins, tiebreakers determined the same as the cut process.
-The tournament will last 7 weeks. 5 weeks of Swiss, cut to top 8 for the 6th week, top 4 for the 7th week, finals will be at those players' discretion
-I'll reveal all the generals once registration is closed.
-Players are expected to have a social agreement on rules enforcement akin to FNM. However, if there are any serious disputes, the REL will be treated as Competitive. This is because the JAR is nigh impossible to apply in these sort of tournaments as it requires for a match official to be there, so to speak. That said, apply the Competitive REL only as a last resort. (Basically, gentlemen's agreement. If you draw an extra card accidentally during your turn, ask your opponent what they'd like you to do. If you can't come to an agreement, then go to the official rules for what happens if someone draws an extra card. Etc etc)
-After last one I need to make a new rule here. I need your decklist pm'd to me before the registration closes. I won't be accepting any latecomers to this rule, once registration's done it's done. If I don't have your general, hashtag and full decklist in a PM by the closing time you will not be entered.
Responsibilities of the Tournament Organiser ("TO")
The TO will post the next pairings within 36 hours from the receipt of results.
The TO will exercise reasonable care in exercising the administrative duties of the tournament.
The TO will not demonstrate any bias or undermine the integrity of the tournament through fraud, favourtism, etc.
The TO will not reveal ANY decklists submitted prior to the cut to Top 8.
The TO will give no less than a week to each player(s) to complete their matchups.
Notwithstanding all other rules in this thread, the TO will comply with any reasonable requests from the MTGS Staff in their administration of the forum.
Responsibilities of the Players
While the TO will look through the decklist submitted, it is the individual player's responsibility to ensure that their decklist is legal. Players are expected to drop out of the tournament if, at any point of the tournament, their decklist is not legal. Failure to do so may result in disqualification (which is effectively a subtle way of saying that you should resign or be fired).
Both players are expected to update the TO on any extraordinary status of their matches (e.g. if they are unable to complete their matches, if the other player would not respond, etc.). Failure to do so may result in match arbitration.
Both players are expected to complete their match on time. While the results will only be confirmed if the losing player should report the result, both players are responsible for updating the TO on the results. Failure to do so may result in match arbitration.
Players are expected to check the tournament thread for the current round frequently for any updates. This is especially important if their deadline is looming.
Notwithstanding all other rules in this thread, the player will comply with any reasonable requests from the MTGS Staff in their administration of the forum. Failure to do so may result in the said MTGS Staff exercising their wrath.
Other matters: -
The TO may make rulings in the event of incomplete matchups or any extraordinary circumstances which may pop up over the course of this tournament. These rulings may modify the rules of the tournament. This may include the disqualification of decklists. On that note, non-serious decklists (i.e. stuff like one general and 99 basic lands or its variants) will be disqualified though there may be exceptions on a case-by-case basis. Such decklists only serve to waste the time of all other participants.
The TO may send reminder PM's to users with regards to the administration of the Tournament. Expect to receive no more than one reminder every 24 hours.
SIGNUP PROCEDURES
To register, you are required to: -
Post the following in this thread: -
Cockatrice User Name.
Cockatrice Deck Code. Do NOT post your General in this thread unless you really want to. I will reveal the Generals simultaneously at the beginning of Round 1
Your Time Zone (in GMT). Feel free to use Wikipedia if you unsure which timezone you are located at.
PM me your entire deck list. Try to ensure that all the cards are accurately reflected. This deck list will be kept confidential until the cut to Top 8. Do indicate which is your Commander / General. Do NOT post your decklist in this thread (unless you really want to).
You are free to edit your security code as much as wish before the tournament begins. The instant signups close though, that deck code is set in stone. If you do edit your deck security code, remember to PM me your new deck list and make a new post in this thread restating your deck security code and time zone.
Registration closes @ mindnight CST (GMT-6), February 15th, 2014! That means that if you need to make any changes to your list/want to run something different, blah blah, make sure you post it in this thread and shoot me a PM!
Failure to go through both steps may void your registration.
Try not to over-edit your deck though as this may create some administrative pressure on my side. It would help if you only start registering after you are somewhat sure of your decklist. What that means is that I don't care when you post, please feel free to post your list later rather than sooner. I'd much rather you post your list at midnight on the 15th as opposed to having to update your list 2-3 times on my end.
Disclaimer #2: I will be participating in this tournament as a competitor. I will be playing either my Skullbriar list or my Prossh list, and the list that I end up playing will be the one that's posted on the corresponding thread. That way all you whiners that want to give me guff about knowing your list beforehand can look at mine to even the table (Looking at you, Leroy! :P) If anyone has a problem with this... too bad.
I know I might sound kind of a like a jerk in this. That's not necessarily my intent, but I do want to make this clear. I'm not interested in making this the most perfect, ideal, rainbows and unicorns tournament there is. I'll do my absolute best to make sure it's fair, and moderated properly, all that, but if comes push comes to shove... I'm organizing this, and my word is law when it comes to any disputes. Bottom line. I just don't want anyone not having a clear view of who's running this/what rules are being enforced, give me **** and get removed because I didn't want to put up with their crap. Again, this will be run like a normal tournament, all rules that are possible to be enforced in compliance with a normal tournament will be, etc. etc. Just remember, don't get on my bad side If this goes well and everyone has a good time then this will be run every 6 weeks, until I get sick of it or someone volunteers to take it over. So please, be nice, kind, courteous, and patient and this will all go over really well.
Thanks again, I hope everyone has fun! I'll probably be editing this with things I missed, if you have issues with the way I'm running this or suggestions please post them in this thread.
Thanks.
*Massive amount of thanks to fzian and perfekt for allowing me to use their formats/letting me know how to do this. I basically copy/pasted most of fzian's thread onto here, so thank them for me if you get a chance and you had a good time.
Lawl. Just make sure you PM me your decklist before the tourney starts, I'm not messing with after tourney trying to get those stupid things again. That was a pain O.o
Side note, just for you Riley: I started a RL tournie here at my shop, had our 1st day last monday. 2nd place was a Sisay deck ^.^ Thought you'd be tickled. It was basically elfball ramp into crazy things, namely Elesh, Emrakul and kamahl. Fun deck though. The only game I actually lost that tournie was to a T5 Emrakul hardcast >.< That was ... absurd
