Playing EDH? Got a lot of mana laying around? Want to use two cards that are god on their own, but a win condition together? Well I have a simple "combo" for you.
I am sure you all know about it already, but I stumbled upon it by accident while going through my binder of EDH stuff. It costs 14 mana, so it isn't fast or cheap... but it's really a 1 card combo. Once you have Planar Portal, you just have to wait until you have enough mana. I also have an easy way to produce infinite colorless with Rings of Brighthearth + Basalt Monolith, so that helps me get to it faster.
Is this something I should avoid playing? Sure, maybe I should stay away from the infinite mana combo... but what about infinite turns? If I have to hard cast the 14 mana, is it that big of a deal? At some point the game should end.
I like how these are both fun cards individually, that I had never played together. I used Planar Portal in my mono black deck that used Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth and Cabal Coffers to generate tons of mana.

"Whatever style you wish to play, be it fast and frenzied or slow and tactical, the surest way to defeat your opponent consistently is by dominating him or her in the war of card advantage." - Brian Wiseman, April 1996
Shying away from things your opponent might find "unfun" is the wrong way to play 1v1. It's just you and your opponent, so politics doesn't apply. If you feel like this 14 mana combo will help you, then have at it!
If you look at my sig you will see what i believe to be a VERY GOOD combo deck. I would love your feed back on it as well. if you have any questions let me know.
Isn't basalt monolith +3 colorless a mana ability you cannot duplicate with those rings?
You copy the untap part.
I like having a deck with good stand alone cards that work great together. Being able to go "opps, I win" is nice. I don't really actively go after a combo, so it isn't like I will be using enlightened tutor to go assemble this... but if it comes up, I'll use it.

It seems like there should be a way to put a game winning infinite in planar portal's toolbox without running a card that costs 3 mana more than its worth you.
Meh, I prefer 20 card infinite combos. Just personal preference.
Power Artifact + Grim Monolith/Basat Monolith
I have Power Artifact, but it isn't as versatile. There aren't many things I want to enchant with it other than a monolith. The Rings can copy all kinds of activated abilities.
Mindslaver lock costs 12 mana, but because you have to pay two AND tap Academy Ruins, it really costs 13. I don't see paying 1 more mana that big of a deal.

Do you have other ideas? I am open to them. There are kinds of combos you can assemble when you can tutor any card you want. I like that I don't even have to assemble a combo... I just look for one card and see if it resolves.
I used to play with Time Stretch and Dralnu, Lich Lord. Dralnu give you all kinds of late game card advantage, and Time Stretch could often times be enough to win the game, especially if I was able to cast it twice. Relearn was a really fun card to play with, and then I was given a foil Call to Mind by a friend, which is better because it cost 2U and not 1UU. Using Relearn on a spell, then Dralnu on relearn, and then Dralnu on that spell to get 4 uses out of it was pretty nuts too. Getting 8 turns out of Time Stretch should be more than enough.

If you really enjoy this deck play arcum daggson as he can tutor for rings, slaver, clock of omens, planar portal, mycosinth lattice which all go infinitely infinite in every way with only 3 activations. Deck is sweet and can definitely dominate a multiplayer game as well as just combo out your opponent in 1v1. Beware how bad it is versus permission/disruption tho. Fun as anything gets but fairly fragile.

I can't think of anything off the top of my head. And I haven't played the deck so I don't understand what kinds of things would work or not work.
Time Sieve and Thopter Assembly is the best one I have ever seen, it is repeatable and you only pay 8 mana total once, assuming you can protect it, in esper artifact commander I would recommend Leonin Abunas and Lightning Grieves, also Darksteel Forge.
Reality Spasm and Echo Mage in a deck with any of many other combo targets. In a 'void' allows unlimited tapping and untapping of ANY permanents. Use the permanents of your choosing for tutoring, drawing, counter spells, etc. Fun with Tamiyo's emblem or Elixir of Immortality; many possibilities. I believe this interaction was possible in Standard during the first Zendikar block.

I also use Academy Ruins + Mindslaver and Mind over Matter + whatever. Just "control control control, oh look, a combo."

Interesting good stuff.
