TOP 8 BRACKET LINK
Hello again MTGSalvation Users and Duel Commander players!
WE’RE BACK! This time for another Duel Commander event here on MTGS! And this time, the bling is even more amazing:
CLICK FOR SHINY
Wait, what? More Blue/Black lands?
…
It’s my old Thrax stuff, cut me some slack
AT ANY RATE: That’s right - 1st place prize for this event will be an Original Ravnica Foil Watery Grave! I do apologize, however, it has a slight ding in the upper left corner. Completely sleeve playable but it is sadly not near mint. Wasn’t me though, I got it like that! I would never harm something so majestic.
The tournament start date and time is April 13th, 2016 at 1600 EST (-5 UTC). The deadline for entries is one hour prior (1500). Entries after that time will not be accepted. Signup posts that have been edited after that time will be disqualified/not accepted. This is a precaution to prevent users from editing their decklists after the event starts.
To sign up for the event, you must post in the thread with your intent to participate, your Cockatrice username and your deck hash. If you need to modify your decklist, make sure to update the deck hash in your initial post appropriately. I will be checking these regularly. After you have completed your first round, I would ask that you update said post to also include your general. In this way, I can keep track of the tournament’s metagame without players having to give away information prior to its start.
Note: I was not able to get this event to work properly as a Double Elimination event on Challonge.com. Therefore, I will be running it as a Swiss event again this time. Hopefully I can find a way to make the format work going forward, but for now, we’ll have to settle.
I just want to remind players to double check their deck hash and list, especially as the deadline for signups come close. I had 3 or 4 instances of players either not including deck hashes in their signup post or having them screwed up after the event started. Mistakes in the 1st Round will be awarded game losses for following rounds. Mistakes after that will be disqualified. DOUBLE CHECK YOUR DECK HASH - ANY CHANGE TO THE LIST WILL CHANGE YOUR HASH.
Let’s move on to the most important part...
Rules
But seriously, read ALL of the rules, even if you think you know them. The most important part of this event running smoothly is that everyone knows exactly how it will work.

All normal Duel Commander rules apply:
-Except for cards in the banlist, Duel Commander is an Eternal format. Cards from every set in Magic’s (black or white bordered, sorry UnSets!) history are legal.
-99 card library, entirely singleton except for Basic Lands.
-1 Commander Card. This card starts in your Command Zone and can be cast at any time that the card could legally be cast.
-30 life, 21 combat damage from a single Commander is considered lethal.
-Vancouver (aka ‘regular’ Magic) mulligan.
-Each time you cast your Commander from your Command Zone, they cost (2) more mana to cast FROM the Command Zone for each time that they have been cast in this way.
-If a Commander is placed into graveyard, library, exile or hand, they may instead be placed into the Command Zone as a replacement effect. (NOTE: A card must go to graveyard for it to have considered to ‘die.’ If you have an effect that matters when your Commander dies, they must go to your graveyard instead of Command Zone for the ability to happen.
-To determine who goes first, roll a die. The winner gets to choose to be on the play or draw. The player who goes first does not draw a card on their first turn.
-Matches are played on a best-of-3 games basis. Please report scores as such. (Example: Player A 2-1 over Player B)
Cockatrice Rules and Tournament Rules:
-You must register your deck Hash (which can be found in the deck editor, it’s a small section above the ‘maindeck’ line) with me and on the thread. I do not need your full decklist unless you make it into the Top 8.
-You cannot change your deck during the duration of the tournament. You may change your decklist all you would like before the tournament, but once the official tournament starts, you are locked into using the deck hash posted in the thread. Changes after that time will not be accepted.
-The tournament will be run as a Swiss Event. We will cut to Top 8 after enough rounds have been played.
-NEW, IMPORTANT - If a player does not post in the thread for their match at all during the duration of a week, they will be dropped from the event. I had to drop several players from the previous event from this. I need to make sure that the event continues to move at a reasonable pace. If you are unable to make your weekly match, be sure to post in the thread regarding it. You will only be given a loss but will continue to be able to participate going forward. Note that this only applies to players who have not completed their matches. You will not be dropped for not posting so long as I’ve received your match results.
-Top 8 will be required to submit decklists before the Top 8 begins in a PM to me. These lists will be made public after the event’s completion and will be posted to MTGTop8.
-Tournament games will take place at any time each week. It is up to you and your opponent to find a time to play your match. Users who are online but not able to make their matches will be given a tie. If a user tries to contact their opponent but receives no answer, the user to make contact with me will be given a win, and their opponent who never responded will be dropped from the event
Miscellaneous Rules STILL IMPORTANT, READ THEM:
-When creating a game in Cockatrice, make sure that it is clearly labeled as such and is under the format ‘EDH/Commander.’ Do NOT allow hands to be shown to spectators, but do allow spectators to view the game and chat. In this way, any replays can be saved and shown in case of any disputes or rules issues. We do not, however, want players to be given information regarding their opponent’s hands. I implore everyone to not give nor be okay with receiving outside assistance during the match. I obviously cannot stop this from happening with spectators allowed but I would rather have the ability to have witnesses to any illegal play OR rudeness to one’s opponents than deal with someone backseat gaming in a free online tournament.
-Being rude to your opponent will not be tolerated. This tournament is being run for the enjoyment of its players. I have a strict zero-tolerance policy regarding this. You may curse your luck, your deities and forces outside of your control with the force of a thousand fiery suns, but you will under no circumstances direct this at your opponent. Anyone caught breaking this rule during the tournament will be automatically disqualified. Obviously, some situations are up for debate but I’d like to think that we’re all adults here.
-This isn’t a rule so much as a suggestion, but do try to save the replays from your match. In case there are any rules disputes or instances of a player being rude they can be reviewed before a decision is made.
-If you are in the Top 8, please upload and send all of the Top 8 matches to me in a PM or post them in the thread. If anything, I’d like to make commentary videos for those matches. (I’m still working on the first tournament, promise!)
- What do you do in the first round if you get an odd number of players? One gets a bye? Because it seems like you already matched up the players that have so far stated they would play. That would give players an incentive to enter just before the deadline, in the hopes of getting the bye should there be an odd number of players. It also looks like your draws are based on the time of announcing entry, rather than randomly. The former is subject to manipulation while the latter is not. I'm sure no one is trying to game the system, I just wonder why you would organise the tournament in that way (if I indeed understood correctly)
- I might like to enter but I'm European so a bit worried for availability (although 4 PM EST start time is actually fine for one match). What is the schedule? One match per day?
Hi!
Most of those were addressed in the OP.
1) The deadline is April 13th at 1500, one hour before the tourney starts.
2) There is no entry fee.
3) Right now the pairings on challonge are just placeholders. They are shuffled before the tournament begins. Last time there was an odd number I dropped from my the event myself but this time around if there's an odd number of players I think my mindset will just be 'So be it!' and see how things turn out.
3a) Draws only occur if both players are present on the forum but are unable to complete their matches. Unfortunately since there's no way I can enforce this there's no reason to penalize people who do end up drawing. That said, I will actively be dropping players who do not post in the thread and fail to show for their weekly match.
4) One match is played per week. (Time limit of Wednesday to Wednesday)
