Yes, I miss the ability to be able to swich between tempo and control gameplay but I really like the raw power and speed of Anafenza for the moment. Marath seems really powerful with the right build, I'm glad he is not a big part of the meta right now (though I do think elfball is becoming increasingly powerfull: Prossh is coming back, Yisan starts to make some results, Titania, Marath, I've seen some Ezuri pop up locally).
The lists are becoming better designed and can be really fast and resilliant in france

Hi all, this thread has been quiet lately but I've been playing quite a bit of 1v1 lately. Anyone tried out Jace, Vryn's Prodigy yet? He might not be impactful enough, but at 2cmc it's tempting.
What would you use Origins Jace for? He's basically a looter that will get hit by the removal spells your opponents, which he can't use to kill GST. His abilities as a walker also are not that good for the deck's game plan as a tempo deck. The only GY cards you have are snapcaster mage, and the 2 delve spells DTT, and TC. Let me know how your testing goes with the new Jace.
A lot of players have moved away from GST in our local metagame as he gets blocked a lot by the myriad of green decks running rampant here.
A very unusual Geist of St Traft list top8ed a big tournament in Nantes, France. The list is full fish with ways to make Geist unblockable and annoying creatures

I thought that was very interesting, too. It really kind of sucks (IMO, of course) that 5 of 8 decks were blue-based control and 2 were easy-to-assemble combos in Sidisi (no problems with Sidisi, btw, just sucks some that many decks auto-lose to him). I can't believe how control-oriented the meta is these days especially on Trice. Narset is my #2 general and it just seems unfair sometimes and I think what really does it is the presence of cheap sweepers like Anger of the Gods and Slagstorm AND the sheer amount of cantripping counters. The latter is extremely frustrating playing against control. I'm ok getting 1-for-1'd, that's a part of playing control, but when they can draw into another counter/sweeper/draw spell, it's extremely tough to win. It's almost as if land destruction is the only way to consistently crush them but even then, without Cavern of Souls, it's tough. LD doesn't even work vs. Geist/GAAIV/Sidisi (notice how they all top'd?) and is very poor against Tasigur (nevermind Life From the Loam!!!!) Rreally though I think the cantrip-counters are what completely put control over the top (no pun intended I can't wait for the SDT ban. I play it but it's just too good for any deck and hard to get rid of).
I don't see what you mean, the only counters that draw you a card are: Remand: It's just a tempo counter and gives your card back Cryptic command Dismiss Exclude: generally only played in clique
Against control, a fast clock is strong, and Anafenza, elfball decks (Yisan), Marath typically have a ok to very good control matchup depending on the general. Geist is also very good against Draw-go control (a little less against more tappout builds). And btw the Geist list that top8-ed was by no means a control deck.
The top 8 is:
Jenara: Fish
Tasigur: blue based control
Tefeiri: storm combo
Yisan: elfball
Geist: fish
GAA: blue based control
Sidisi: combo reanimator
Only 2/8 are control. I can see saying Tefeiri is more control with a combo finish, so that's 3 but Geist and Jenara are by no means control, especially with this particular build of Geist: 22 creaturees, and an unreal number of tempo spells !
Land destruction is not a really good strategy against control in DC since control decks typically play a lot of lands (42 minimum most of the time) and do nothing if not backed up by a real threat. eg Turn 2 Anafenza into T3 armagueddon is really good against control. Just land destruciton on the other hand not so much
With the new mulligan rule, I've been going back to Geist for some testing and am really impressed by this deck. As our opponent can not mulligan aggressivemy to find an answer to our general, in my experience Geist tends to hit the board and stick way more often than before, and allow us to play a full tempo gameplan, which can be devastating for our opponent. I've had "god hands" where I won a game without my opponent casting any spells.
First, my current list: I've revisited the "aggro-control" list as a starting point. If it is true that Geist is more likely to stick to the board, I don't want to be playing to many creatures/wincons and focus on disruption. I am also considering going bigger if the format slows down, playing cards like Elspeth Sun's Champion, Future Sight and more planeswalkers.
I have mixed feelings about Ancestral Vision in the deck. I feel like if you don't suspend it turn one it becomes a dead card. What's the community's feelings?
At the moment i will start to test an ojutai deck.Made the list in my friend login on tappedout and forgot to put council in, maybe i will swap path for council or just cut 1 land for council.
Beissbaer, your deck is very similar to mine, with Armageddon, Ravages of War, and Cataclysm, and only three Equipments. This isn't using the Duel Commander banlist though.
Hi, if you're looking to make a more controlling Geist deck you should check out Maxence Achoun's list. It should be in mtgtop8, I think he top8ed a DTC trial in june or the beginning of july.
Appreciate the link, will u be making any changes to your own Geist? I am just starting out for DC Commander and I just finished building GAAIV but with the new bannings, I feel Geost would do better
Marath banning invites more creature decks
Blue lost 2 of its most important draw spell
The ban of Marath is a very good news for Geist: the MU was a little difficult. I don't know if it will mean a return of random creature decks though.
The loss of the 2 draw spells is hard to take but I don't think it hurts us that much, though more than GAAIV, who allows for a higher curve (Jace's ingenuity etc are more playable)
The delve spells were really good in the list with a low curve and lots of cantrips to fuel them but I think Geist is still very well positionned, and a better deck than Augustine for the moment (the ability to put a fast clock on combo/control is really good)
For my own list I'm not sure where I'll go yet to replace the 2 delve spells. I think 2 options are possible: either going bigger by dropping some tempo elements (trickbind, creatures, enchantments, conditional conters for hardcounters) and playing big draw spells such as sphinx's rev (requires 40-42 lands I think), future sight etc and have Geist more as a plan B or finisher. This kind of list also allows you to play 2-3 wrath effects against creature decks
A more aggro control list is still possible, as it existed before the delve spells were printed. Playing Geist turn 3 with cheap countermagic and a low curve is still a good strategy

I have not tested yet for new cards. Spell queller seems extremely playable, especially in more tempo oriented lists.
Thalia I don't really know, she costs 3 which is a lot as we dont run mana acceleration. On the other hand, it makes it more likely that geist can swing through blockers and compliments the mana denial plan (turn 3 thalia turn 4 parallax can be very hard to recover from for a 3 color deck).
Going for a more controlling plan should increase the MU against creature based decks (xho habe lots of blockerd for geist) as well as attrition based decks. I amso think its bettrr againsy control. You loose some points against combo on the other hand
Gideon is definitely an option in the deck but I think its more a meta choicr: very good in the mirror or against slow/fair decks, but a lot of decks can just go on top of him.

Can you guys give me advice on my budget geist deck. The league at my university that is starting has a restriction of 100 dollars including the commander.

I dig it. When I looked at your list, I had a ton of suggestions, but kept forgetting about the cost restriction. I think you're doing a whole lot with that restriction. The only thing I might suggest is Render Silent, as it shuts a player down for a turn, including nullifying Maelstrom Wanderer, who seems almost omnipresent. Sweet deck all around though.

Can you name all of the creature types with at least 20 cards? Try my Sporcle Quiz! Last Updated: 6/29/20 (Core Set 2021).
I can understand that this is a budget build, I would suggest cutting Brainstorm if you're not running multiple shuffle effects (i.e fetches). Or add cheap shuffle effects (Evolving Wilds, Terramorphic Expanse, relavant Panoramas) to the deck to make it more effective.
For inclusions, you can add Ascended Lawmage as a back-up Geist.

I am thinking about slowing down Geist by basically making it a more aggressive GAAIV-type deck with roughly 3-5 equipments
Does anybody have an updated list? Would love to see King Brago's slower list that he mentioned a few posts earlier
