Duel Commander Tournament Report
August 22nd, 2015
25th "New Year Cake" Cup
We had a 13 Person Tournament in Shanghai, China.
The metagame was:
Captain Sisay
Prossh, Skyraider of Kher
Narset, Enlightened Master
Tasigur, the Golden Fang*2
Geist of Saint Traft*2
Jenara, Asura of War
Kaalia of the Vast*2
Anafenza, the Foremost
Marchesa, the Black Rose
Linvala, Keeper of Silence
With the top 2 being:
1. Captain Sisay by Pan Yude
2. Tasigur, the Golden Fang by Yao Yao
Sad to say that for prizing reasons we only do a three round FNM.... so it left 3 people going 3-0.
In the last few months the Duel Commander scene here has really been picking up. At my local store we used to only get eight or so people, until around June and ever since I don't think we have dropped below 12 people.
I didn't get to play myself but I know two of the decks that didn't pick up a loss were Tasigur and Nin.

2-1s were Sigarda, Yisan, Alesha, Wydwen, likely a few others I'm missing.
I don't think Wydwen is as well positioned for the meta, but it is what it is.
We held this tournament every two months as a part of a League, which itself is held twice a week, and we have a fairly standard pool of players, we tend to keep up with the archetypes but we get the oddball often enough to keep things interesting.
tasigur 2-1
zurgo 2-0
zurgo 2-0
tymaret 2-1
animar split but we played and i win by 2-1
I liked the deck very much, i can find the combo very fast or find response for many situations.Still have to test more vs control match ups.The list is this:

Haha the shift from Narset to Sidisi is smart. No one in your meta is running control giving you smooth wins. Nicely metagamed 8)

Sidisi = win, Narset= draws, soo i think i made a good choice XD.But the change from narset to sidisi is because narset betrayed me, i got mana screwed in a lot of games with 43 lands, soo i don't love her anymore, my new love wears black s2
The Tasigur played a lot of counters. lt was a UB control with G splash. The GAAlV there was... odd.
l don't know why they say there are no control players around here. We had 2 Thrax, 1 GAAlV, 1 Esper Reanimator, 2 Cliques, 1 Wydwen, 2 Geist, all that from people l know, we may had more on that tourney. You could say that there are few good control players, but control is growing continuously around here.
To me, "breaking the metagame" is when everyone knows about a deck and still can't beat it. Having you and your friends bring a secret deck to a tournament and doing well with it is just the definition of a good "rogue" deck, right?
GAA4 (and to some extent Clique) should have been the only decks that should have given Sidisi a run for her money. The rest of the decks don't have favorable matchups versus her. And kudos to Tut because he beat every "control deck" as @francaisfrancis (aka Mr.Rhetorical questions guy) pointed out.

This player was a relatively new player to the scene and had a very suboptimal deck, so this matchup was kind of onesided given my arsenal of choices.
G1: He's on the play and gets the ball rolling with a turn 2 Consul's Liutenant. I go with Silver Myr turn 2, he drops Anafenza and swings.
I play a Inkmoth Nexus, play Arcum and pass. He plays Doran, the Siege Tower and swings. I activate Arcum saccing the Silver Myr searching for Myr Turbine and pass.
At this point I'm waiting for some artifact removal, but he goes to attack phase, I chump and he drops Kytheon's Irregulars, so he can tap my guys and attack for lethal next turn. I make one token, he goes to combat phase and I search for Ensnaring Bridge. I chump Doran with Arcum.
Next turn I play Clock of Omens and start incrementally building enough tokens to make him not happy blocking. I can see he's looking for artifact removal. When everything is in place, I play Arcum with haste, activate him multiple times thanks to Thousand-Year Elixir and Minamo and just combo off on my own turn by searching for Rings of Brighthearth, Basalt Monolith and Staff of Domination. He concedes once I explain that I have infinite mana, draws, creature untaps and creature taps.
--- R2 vs Geist of Saint Traft
This guy is a local player with a lot of experience and knowledge of the metagame, but he is fearful of my deck, because he does not know it very well.
G1 - I win the dice and he mulligans, mentioned that the new mulligan rule makes monocolor guys like mine better.
I'm keeping the traditional hand of Dork, 3 lands +whatever appears. This time I had Lightning Greaves and a mana rock. I play Greaves on turn 2, then a dork, equip the dork and the mana rock. He taps out for Geist of Saint Traft.
Since I have Greaves for Arcum and he is tapped out, I go Arcum, equip Greaves and pass. He swings, I take the damage and he Ponders on his turn. He's looking for something. I ok it. He goes for my Lightning Greaves with Detention Sphere and I let it go. I activate Arcum for Myr Turbine, play Inkmoth Nexus and pass, leaving mana open for a potential Neurok Stealthsuit if he wants to remove my guy. He just bashes. Ok, everything in order. He passes, I do not activate Arcum at EOT, afraid of a potential response, draw and go. He Brainstorms at my EOT, which is the cue for my next tutor. I go for Possessed Portal. He tilts and misreading the card, plays and Armageddon. I ok it and he realizes his mistake after discarding the rest of his hand.
G2 - In this game, he mulligans to five, trying to find mana for his Geist. He stumbles on his mana, getting to three mana on turn four, tapping out for Geist. At that point, I already had Arcum in play, properly protected. I Spine of Ish Sah his white land and then Possessed Portal, because I'm sadistic.
Never played this guy, but he is 2-0 and wins fast. I figure he is playing the combo shenanigans version. I win the dice, so I'm happy.
G1 - I take the risk of keeping a hand with nothing but a Trinket Mage. He does nothing t1 and plays Dark Ritual into Diabolic Tutor turn 2. I go for trinket mage turn 3, grabbing Grafdigger's Cage. He gets nervous, plays Rhystic Tutor turn 3, drops an extra land and play Duress, hoping I didn't catch that.
I remind him that I started playing, did not miss any land drops and he played an extra land. I did not want to make a scene, so I interpreted that he was nervous with the situation of losing and simply forgot he played a land last turn. Now I wanted to beat him even more.
I draw, play my cage and start to draw some artifacts. At some point, after much stalling thanks to the cage, he manages to hardcast Griselbrand. In response, I activated Arcum for Pithing Needle, which he conceded in much rage.
G2 - I have a fast hand thanks to Svyelunite Temple, allowing me to play Arcum turn 3 and activate it turn 4. I go for Myr Turbine and play reactively. He Toxic Deluges my Arcum away, which I respond by fetching Grafdigger's Cage, but I have the Turbine in place. It is only a matter of time until I can cast Arcum with haste and wreck his plans. Turns out that is sooner than later, because I drew Basalt Monolith and Gilded Lotus. I ramp like crazy, play Arcum, fetch Rings of Brighthearth, untap Arcum with Minamo, copying the effect with Rings, make some infinite mana, grab Staff of Domination and it is all over.
Oh, the grindy games versus blue decks. Both of these games involve a LOT of land go, trying to resolve your spells and leaving what matters resolve. The three games of this series were VERY grindy, and went to the last card of each player hand. I lost G1 because I could not resolve Arcum and activate it before his Umezawa's Jitted commander killed me.
G2 he's tapped out after we go to a counter war to let Arcum resolve. Luckly for me, I had the Swan Song to seal the deal. I immediately fetch Winter Orb and he concedes.
G3 was a mixture of G1 and G2: He's tapped out and I have the last counterspell in hand to resolve Arcum with haste and a very good board to try and win. He has two cards in hand.
One of them is Force of Will, the other one is a blue card.
GGs. I lost.
3-1, 7-1.
Good friend of mine, sitting 4-0. If I win and Vendillion wins, I'm number 1 in the swiss. Lets do it!
G1: I start with the most explosive, ridiculous hand I ever did with this deck: turn Svyelunite Temple, turn 2 Metalworker. He went turn 1 dork, turn 2 Animar.
I then tapped Metalworker revealing: Spine of Ish Sah, Palladium Myr, Seat of the Synod (an artifact!), Lightning Greaves and Voltaic Key.
10 mana. Play Voltaic Key, untap Metalworker. Now I have 16 mana. Play Seat of the Synod, tap for blue. Play Arcum Dagsson. 13 mana. Play and equip Lightning Greaves, 11 mana. Play Spine of Ish Sah, killing Animar. 4 mana. Sac Metalworker, search for Possessed Portal. Play Palladium Myr. Perfect.
He conceded after that Vulgar Display of Power.
G2: This game was a little slower. He was setting with, with a dork and Animar and I managed to sneak Arcum Dagsson and activate him for Myr Turbine. I went for the slow choice because I knew his deck was more midrangy-good stuff than dedicated combo. At some point he tries to Acidic Slime my Turbine, which I tutor for Torpor Orb. The game was controlled at that point, since his deck was now just a bunch of creatures. I quickly dispatch the match tutoring for Nevinyrall's Disk + Mycosynth Lattice + Darksteel Forge.
They were going to play the top4 for some extra prizes that I did not care about, but I had no time to play and I dropped, happy that I was #1 in the Swiss. #5 in the spots wnet up because of my drop - it was the Sidisi, Undead Vizier player.
in the end, Vendillion Clique guy won the top4, and he probably would've won against me were I playing.
Top 4:
Marath has to leave, Nins split Top 3*. All hail the Ninistry!
*We mashed up the 1, 2 and 3rd place prizes and divided them evenly between the 3 of us, Marath gets a game ‘loss’ and takes 4th. Would have loved to play it out, though!
I am trying to implore the T8 players to submit decklists to one of the shop coordinators who can submit the store’s results to MTGTOP8. Stay tuned.

l don't know why they say there are no control players around here. We had 2 Thrax, 1 GAAlV, 1 Esper Reanimator, 2 Cliques, 1 Wydwen, 2 Geist, all that from people l know, we may had more on that tourney. You could say that there are few good control players, but control is growing continuously around here.

Can't remember the rest.
---- R1 vs Anafenza, the Foremost
G2: He starts this time with Duress, discarding the only non-creature, non-land card I had in hand: Sky Diamond. I play Island, Lotus Petal, Plague Myr, Crystal Vein turn 2 into Arcum Dagsson. Turn 3 I activate Arcum saccing the Plague Myr for Nevinyrral's Disk, play Mishra's Factory next turn and search for Darksteel Forge. He's locked and concedes.
1-0 in Matches, 2-0 Games.
2-0, 4-0.
R3 vs Sidisi, Undead Vizier
3-0, 6-0.
--- R4 vs Vendillion Clique.
GGs. I lost.
3-1, 7-1.
--- R5 vs Animar, Soul of Elements
4-1, 9-1.
With this score I had a strong shot for #1 in Swiss. Vendillion Clique would have to win against the other Animar, Soul of Elements for me to be #1. And he did!
The top 4 was:
1 - Arcum Dagsson 4-1
2 - Vendillion Clique 4-1
3 - Animar, Soul of Elements 4-1
4 - Geist of Saint Traft 4-1
They were going to play the top4 for some extra prizes that I did not care about, but I had no time to play and I dropped, happy that I was #1 in the Swiss. #5 in the spots wnet up because of my drop - it was the Sidisi, Undead Vizier player.
in the end, Vendillion Clique guy won the top4, and he probably would've won against me were I playing.
