Hey guys, I'm back from my long DC vacation and ready to play! I am piloting Geist and Thrax, and this thread is about the latter...I'm having trouble cutting some cards. Here is my 103 card list, and this is like 5th or so revision after talking to several competitive Thrax players + utilizing my own knowledge of the game:
I'm more or less set on the lands and the amount of land (39). If you provide a compelling reason for me to run less, than I will definitely cut some land, but otherwise, I think I mostly am looking to cut nonland cards. I'd prefer responses from people who competitively play the deck or know someone who does with good success, but of course all input from knowledgeable players is welcome!
Thanks!
PS Sorry for the weird order. Pasting from Cockatrice sucks.
You're running lots of expensive spells, and only have Rooftop Storm to "ramp". For starters, I'd recommend cutting down on those 5+cmc cards, to help compete against faster decks.
Yea, I'm going to cut Teferi for starters. I actually do have 3 ramp that I keep aside, and before every tournament, I plan to remove the 3 worst cards against the meta that shows up and stick in the ramp in place of it. I think the Planeswalkers are going to stay. I guess I could see Inferno Titan getting cut, but it'd be a shame. Alot of these are apparently fairly standard choices for the deck, though I agree that the deck to me seems a bit pricey mana wise. It's so fun looking though!
Inferno Titan / Consecrated Sphinx / Teferi / Glen Elendra / Venser don't seem worth it. You have no way to take advantage of having creatures (equipment), play boardwipes, and win through general damage. I'd stick with the 2 mana counter, rather than a 4 mana counter that gives you a 2/2 like Venser does.
I also think Cruel Ultimatum deserves to be in here though. It's tutorable with Mystical Tutor, and is just brutal when resolved.
Also agree you need at least 5-6 mana rocks in Thraximundar.
I also think you might be playing too many single target removal spells. I counted 6 and that seems excessive, especially when you also have bounce + boardwipes. At the very least, I'd cut Chainer's Edict.
I also think Oblivion Stone is much better than Engineered Explosives.
Thanks for the input! I am starting to agree about Inferno Titan, he comes in and at best kills 3 mana dorks or MAYBE a planeswalker on a 6/6, then inevitably dies. But my deck does that already.
I really like Consecrated/Glen Elendra, as the former essentially gives me a game win by surviving half a turn (and, when combined with the mana rocks, will be no issue to cast), and the latter is a pretty brutal 2 for 1 that gets better with Riptide. Venser is standard I think in almost all blue decks, so he is the least likely to be cut.
I chose EE over O stone becauue this deck's weakness is early game, and I have watched my friend ruin people with that card. O stone is very mana hungry, and can't be fetched with Tolaria West. It's also much worse with Academy Ruins.
I have been on and off the fence about Cruel Ultimatum. It seems like it...doesn't do enough. I know I'll get stoned for saying that. But it's like, ok I'll discard my 1-2 cards I have left, sac my mana dork, and lose a little life. Sure, you can gain a bit of life and return a creature (which might not exist at all) to your hand, and draw 3. The draw 3 is the best part for me, but I don't want to pay 7 to draw 3. I know that when the stars align the card will be absolutely insane and snap your opponent's spine in half, but for now...it's on the "to test" list.
Thanks for the help again!
Cuts so far: Teferi/Titan. Down to 101.
By the way, these are the mana rocks I'd like: Dimir Signet/Talisman, Coalition Relic, Gilded Lotus, Chromatic Lantern. Seem reasonable?
