often times chain lightning doesnt do what we want it to do because it is sorcery speed, it often times unable to hit things on time, i have switched this card out for a turn//burn because it kills utility early, and later on in the game it kills any creature they play.

stormbreath dragon seems really good against a lot of the field, any thought on using pithing needle. Also, how often does magus of the moon stick around for you when playing against a variety of decks do you find that it is just as good as blood moon, or even being worse is still valued because it time-walks them a few turns?
also i'm still curious what you think of my mana base in comparison to yours?? although i can see that my ruinations are somewhat weaker because of my extra non-basics, so i might cut lonely sandbar, and tolaria west for islands again, but i wanted your two cents before making the jump back to simplicity. Also i notice your not running shivan reef. i would assume this is to power up ruination as well.
Thanks again for all the awesome advice and discussion asimov its really great to work on this deck with you!

I had it in the list but i found myself wanting desolate lighthouse in far more situations. Riptide laboratory cannot be beat when the stars align and we lock them with a venser, or clique or some other sort of powerful wizard, but contested cliffs is good every game you draw it. It is stronger in far more scenarios where it helps to dig and draw solid card advantage. The reason i am not running both and trying to keep my nonbasic land count down is becauses i want to capitalize the most out of a ruination where i hit 3 or 4 of my opponents lands and only maybe one of my own.
great question

Yeah I was thinking about cutting magus simply because in several matchups he doesn't do a ton, before dying to a sweeper. I might switch him out for the 3 mana transmute guy we were talking about on he first page Of the thread, drift of phantasms. Or maybe the dragon. How has it been playing. Why do you like it? Is his monstrous relevant or just the pro white? What has he been good against. And why him over thundermaw hellkite?! What are he advantages and disadvantage of playing him?!!

I still think the shackles is important iin those plans. Either you steal a creature to clock with or take their general and hold them so they don't cast them. I love electrolyze, it's an awesome card! And just yesterday was thinking about jilt. We don't want stifle because we want it to replace itself and we can wait. I think I might replace magus with stormbreath dragon. Interesting changes for sure!
Oh I like desertion too!

We don't want stifle because we want it to replace itself and we can wait.
Both Squelch and Interdict cantrip, if that's what you're looking for. And sometimes a turn 1 Stifle on their fetchland swings the game in your favor. (It also counters Derevi being flashed into play once. And counters the first Zur swing.)
thats very true, i think that we would be cutting our bounce effects for these, and i agree about vendillion clique being a great combat trick/clock/disruption, the card is hyper flexible and is a scalpel whenever we need to cut something from our opponent. but magus of the moon has not been performing the way i want it to. i might try it in paper before finally cutting it but i have the feeling it will be a stormbreath dragon as soon as i acquire one.

I still like the disruption element, but the difference in vendilion cliques power level is pretty noticeable, so it might get moved out at some point. although im going to be sad when i see that happen.
wanted more counterspells and finding myself not using turn and burn to its full advantage, its good but im going to cut it at the moment for complicate.

ok after a month of playtesting i have a new build that i have been playing, and it has been working really really well! You can check the changelog for a quick description of cuts but here i will go into detail with each of my choices.
First up we have complicate for turn//burn. asimov was right, this is our best, and most resilient removal spell.
Second up we have a really large change, Bribery was cut. Each time i saw it, no matter what the matchup was i was always dissapointed to draw it. this was cut for several reasons. The first and primary reason is we never know what our opponents deck is. With an aggro deck, bribery results in a ok creature for 5 mana, that we have to tap out for, this isnt very good.Against Control bribery lets us steal some larger creature(if they let it resolve), which can be good, but dies to a wrath or cheap removal. Overall even here it never feels super impressive. With the banning of oath of druids less emrakuls and other fatties will be floating around. Another strike against bribe. With zur banning and derevi banning opening up aggro, we are going to see more of the situations where bribery is simply ok. As such i replaced bribery with Aetherling. We have to play this card smart, we cant simply drop it turn 6 and attempt to win, we have to play it later, however if aetherling resolves and stays alive we win. period. it skips away from wraths, stops removal, and is unblockable. This card has tested exceedingly well and im glad i finally got around to finding a spot for it.
Magus of the moon was another large cut. Asimov hadn't been playing this for a while, which tuned me in to its potential weakness, but more and more games tested it kept proving itself to be so so terrible. I hated drawing it, and was neer happy with how long it stuck around to hurt my opponent. It died to sweepers, wraths, removal, and combat. we could rarely swing in with it and its body became far more of a liability than we wanted. I replaced the card with isochron scepter, and sweet lord was this the right choice. Scepter is terrible in two situations, our opponent has artifact removal, We do not have enough instants, and/or we dont have any cards in hand. The first problem is mitigated by nin herself. We have a card advantage engine which minimizes the impact or losing the spell to wrath. The second way we can handle this is by appropriately playing the card. Isochron scepter is a 4 drop, in some very rare occasions it can be a two drop, but often we want to play it on 4 to use whatever instant is on it, to protect itself. This happens quite often when its played, we drop isochron with a counterspell, and then protect it with itself. Against control we can play it with a lightning bolt to kill them over time, and against aggro we can put burn on it to keep their creatures down. overall i have been excited every time i've seen this card. It has allowed me to come back from some absolutely unwinnable games (scepter and brainstorm). The other portion of the problem is addressed by our deck construction, almost all of our counterspells are playable under a scepter and most of our burn is as well. overall i have been completely surprised by how good this has been!
next we have peek for brainstorm, this occured because to be perfectly honest i have not been able to find a peek in my area. starcity has been out of them for a month, and all of my local gamestores do not have any. However, brainstorm has been fantastic. This card cleans up our hands, and with all 7 of our fetches it often times recycles away trash we dont want. Even if i do find a peak i might have to make room for this.
and the last big change, was the simplification of the mana base. While the more complex mana base allowed me to cast all my spells without any problems i was running into a complication with my ruination. I wanted ruination to be castable every single time i drew it, but often i was wiping half my lands along with theirs. this was not advantageous enough. with the mana base simpler i find myself winning with this card. i often lose one land, sometimes 2 and on average they lose 4 or 5. the cards great and no one plays around it. from here all of my force spikes and mana leaks turn live again and im able to ussually close out the game because i have more resources.
things im currently thinking of testing.
thinking of removing flame slash for psionic blast. i want slash to hit planeswalkers, and ive noticed a lot of the time i am not too worried about the mana difference because instant allows me good timing to choose from. I am also thinking of cutting mizzium mortars for char, because again instant speed, and hits planeswalkers, as well as the triple red being really painful on my mana base.
i also keep coming back to telepathy. i know its crazy, but knowledge off my opponents hand makes every counterspell accurate. i hit what kills me, and my opponent can never bluff. perfect information at all times seems really good.
hi there guys! i've been wanting to build an izzet general for 1v1 and i find nin to be my taste. 2nd to niv mizzet firemind. i was thinking and i would like to get input to you guys. how good does the deck works and how was its match-up against tier generals.?
and lastly, if it wouldn't be a burden i would like to see your decklist asimov if its ok to you.
thanks!

Wouldn't Ruhan be strictly better? And what changes are you speculating Asimov?
And nin is really good in my opinion. She has early removal ans sweepers, and she kills herself with her ability to draw cards, this means we don't have to run clunky filter. Overall I really enjoy the deck, and it's a ton of card advantage. The plan is to counter what they have that kills you, stick a jace, or steal a creature and win from there. Blast to pilot.

True I can see your reasoning for that. I feel like the list I currently have is set up to play around just about anything at the moment. I'm currently playing around bonfire, psionic blast and char! I've had a few games where half way through I just start doing burn at my opponent then kill them out of nowhere.

Having play tested against this deck for many games over the past 2 months, I'd say Nin has a great matchup against everything in the current format. I've played all the popular archetype's against this deck and nin has tools to fight them all.
So far the only things that the deck has a little trouble with is Marath, as it can pick off nin while she is in play, and ramp archetypes such as Maelstrom Wanderer, since they have more threats than you have counterspells. These matchups seem tough at first, but with careful play and knowledge of whats needed in each match, you can increase your chances from 60/40 their favor to 50/50 even.
For most opponents, you are favored in the matchup as long as you carefully manage your resources.

The only problem I see vs Wanderer is Sylvan Library on the play. You have just one good answer here (Spell Snare) and this Library will win them the game versus you. At least, I've been having issues with my tuned Grixis versus it (I feel like I can beat them except for Sylvan draws as they are a big and slow ramp deck).
Yeah we have a bunch of answers to jr 3drinks. Also I'm really excited to test out bonfire of the damned. Currently testing psionic blast over mizzium mortars but I'm gonna move in bonfire over the blast for a bit to see how I like it.

May I see an updated list for Nin? I just built one leaning towards heavy counters, numbering to 18 counters and about 10 red burn/boardwipes plus a number of bounce spells. i also added elements of creature steal in the form of control magic and sower of temptation, vedalken shackles and gilded drake. i'd be interested to see some of your decklists to see your balance of counters and burn.
He front page is up to date with what I'm currently playing. Today i cut slagstorm for bonfire of the damned. And I cut mizzium mortars for psionic blast. Both have been fantastic.
