Repeal is the best bounce spell after venser and into the roil. I want a third so I have access to one per game. It's a matter of density as opposed to pure quality. That being said repeal is pretty good in my testing. I'll pay close attention to whether or not it's doing anything while testing. Thanks for pointin it out.
You might be right about dragonmaster. Of course if that's the case you should cut pyromancer but it does close out games when I need it too, it is bad in the marath matchup, but ensures a kill against control. I'll start looking for actually compribale. It packs a lot of threat density into its singular mana.
Antherling I wouldn't trade for any card ever printed. I really mean that Asimov. I've never lost a game I've resolved it in. This card does everything we want it to ever do. Protects itself. Has vigilance. Unblockable, blocks forever and trades, literally unkillable. You are asking me to cut a ruination quality card.
Electrolyze might get cut in the near future for anger of the gods. Currently it's in as a quick answer to bob and friends on turn 3. It also kills mana elves and values out aggro decks really successfully. Again though hill pay particularly close attention to it my friend.
As for pithing needle. It's easily the most flexible card in the deck. It is good against every single matchup. I actually mean it when I say it fixes everything. Planeswalker? Sword of fire and ice? Maze of ith? Marath? Griselbrand? Mana elf? Anything. The potential is endless with that card. It's awesome. You should try it! Hell, it even hits underworld connections.

One of my friends is an avid Nin player (and quite good magic player). He has been playing Nin for approximately 2 years and his decklist has gone through many changes as he has tested various cards and builds. He seems to have a very similar philosophy as HipsterWhale, and a very similar decklist too! I figured I'd share some of the things I've gleaned playing against his Nin deck (I've tried to play Nin myself, but its an extremely challenging deck. As HipsterWhale stated previously, it takes a long time to figure out what exactly you care about and what you don't). Maybe some of it will be useful or interesting.
As far as bounce spells go, I know he plays Venser and Repeal, but I'm not if he's playing Into the Roil. Most control players I talk to prefer Repeal, as its about 3cmc on average (most of the time you're bouncing problematic permanents that slipped through early). He is playing Cyclonic Rift; this card unfortunately doesn't replace itself, but an overloaded Rift is often a win condition.
He is playing Electrolyze (and Fire // Ice). I think this is amazing card; at worst it cycles and burns some face. But this card is also an amazing answer to decks that play early mana dorks (like Ezuri, Doran, and Marath). One of the things I've found playing against Marath is that A) the deck is extremely mana hungry; they count on using Marath as removal and generally play very little other removal, and B) they use mana dorks a lot, in-game 20-50% of their mana base is actually mana dorks.
Therefore, zapping two mana guys and drawing a card is HUGE vs. that deck.
Needle is simply amazing. As Hruen-Whale said above, its good versus every deck (one small correction tho, Needle doesn't hit mana elves, that's a Phyrexian Revoker thing). At one point my friend was playing Trinket Mage for Pithing Needle and Glaring Spotlight, as we were seeing 2-3 good Geist decks every tournament. Obviously the Trinket Mage packet is meta-dependent, but I don't think I'd take Pithing Needle out of any control deck.
One big omission I've seen in both HipsterWhales and Asimov's list is Kher-Keep. I think this card is the best utility land available in Nin. It often plays both the role of Maze and Lighthouse in one card. It also allows for huge, repeatable draws if you set it up over 2 turns. This is the only other non-basic that's not in your list that I think deserves an add (and I'm actually pretty down on T-Edge).
If you guys have any questions, I can pick his brain and see what he thinks about specific cards.
Hi hipsterwhale. You are absolutely correct, most of the time, its play mistakes that will cost us the game. Ill post my list soon as i still want to do a lot of testing with the deck.. obe thing thats different from yiur list is jace tms. I simply dont have it yet.
I played against a grixis reanimator with thrax as his general, but he often would cheat in griselbrand. Whats effective against him is to actually use griselbrand against him. let him reanimate grisel, then steal it, either with gilded drake, mind control, order of succession, treachery etc. My nin deck has a creature steal package which normally takes care of bigger creatures which my burn could not handle. Hope this helps.
I'm in the process of building my own Nin deck, as there are only a few cards from the list that I don't own. I'm very interested in all the comments so far in this thread.
I'm curious as to what your game plan is against the tier 1 decks of the meta now.
VS. Marath - how do you play out your first 5 turns? What are the key cards that you should resolve to make the matchup favorable?
VS. Skittles - how do you play out your first 5 turns? What cards do you counter, and what do you let resolve as some builds have more creatures with infect aside from skittles?
VS. Ezuri/Jenara - do you mulligan for cheap sweepers to take out the dorks? Or do you just counter the commander and let them over-extend before you draw the sweepers?
VS. Geist/Oloro/GAAIV - when do you cast Nin? When do you kill her for card draw? What are your aces in these matchups, where if that/those card/s resolve, you are more likely to win the game.
Why is Magus of the moon underperforming in games?
Thanks for all the comments posted. Please give me feedback so I can get a glimpse of how to play the deck, even if I have not sleeved it up yet. TIA
Marath is a pretty rough matchup, they can kill nin and often times we die from card disadantage. we cannot take the game back. I think the base deck needs reworking to fix this.
skittles we counter the general himself while playing lands. hope for sweepers
ezuri/jenara we stick nin early and draw cards while looking for sweepers, when we can we ruination/blood moon.
Geist is a decent matchup, but if they have silence andd orims chant a lot of the time we die to a geddon. the trick is to slow his clock down.
oloro, we counter his combo, and try and beat down, its important here that we dont lose to a lab maniac
Gaaiv i havnt played a ton against.
i think right now the deck is slightly too reactive, we need more ways to pressure our opponent trying ot win on turn 10 as opposed to turn 30.
i've been thinking about it alot and will be overhauling the deck throughout the week. maybe with marath in such a good position nin is no longer where we want to be?

Thanks for the feedback there HRUEN/HipsterWhale, and ASIMOV! Appreciate the points you've given there.
I will try to brew the deck with my own twist as well if I get to play with some Marath players this week. I hope I can sleeve this up soon so I can contribute a little with how my matches went. It's gonna be scary, yet nice to be able to use a different deck again after a while. I have been using the same deck for over a year now, and this could be a nice challenge again for me.
UR has always been my favorite color combination, but the format is not really good to Red, as you have a lot of burn cards only being spot removals for the Duel Commander format.
I'm gonna test some man-lands as well with the deck to add a few more threats.
Yup, saw your post too Asimov. What about morphling (original superman of mtg)? Maybe more X-damage burn spells like bonfire, and volcanic geyser as finishers then?

I still have had good success with Prognostic Sphinx as my finisher of choice. I know he doesn't seem like it, but he bashes in the air, can hold Runechanter's Pike like a boss, can blank removal, has a HUGE Scry3 on offense, and Nin can blast it for a draw4 (dig seven deep in one shot with Sphinx plus Nin). I know Hruen and I discussed this card a few pages ago, but I just wanted to bring it up again now that we've got a few more players conversing here.
The only other real big "left field" guy I like to run is Stormtide Leviathan. Sometimes a game goes really, really late, and sometimes I just want to say no you can't attack. As a random bonus, it fixes us under Blood Moon though if we fetch appropriately that shouldn't be an issue. It's a quirk of mine, I guess. Pet cards FTL?
Have we discussed Torpor Orb in here yet? We lose Snapcaster, Venser and (if you're playing it) Drake, but I think the benefit outweighs the cost.
@ asimov: im comfortable playing @39 lands. maybe i'll just adjust up a little up to 41. so far, i didn't have any problems with my mana base.
as for the boseiju i need it to protect my sorceries against U match-ups so far as you see its mostly board wipes a boseiju powered board wipe saves you for any counter wars. and, about no treachery and moon effects. i didn't have those cards to begin with but i am fully aware of how good it is. as for thasa. i added her for scry ability pretty much very useful, bonus if she became a creature i like dumping nin's ability to her drawing tons of cards pretty useful in my opinion.
@sharky: my list is what can i say homebrew? i'm playing with what i think really suits up my playstyle. it is not about putting sub-op cards just for the sake of completing the deck. its what im comfortble playing it. basic strategy is like a go-draw deck, controlling board before putting up threats.
please ask specific cards you from the list and i'll try to answer it why do i play it.

Thanks for the match summaries Nixj03! Enjoyed reading them. I respect your homebrew style, as I do it for all my edh decks too. Some cards just work for you because your very comfortable playing with them, so that's understandable.
How does mental misstep play out for you when you draw it? Also wanted to ask about all is dust as it costs 7 mana? has it been a great card for you throughout testing?

Speaking of specific meta cards, I've found Steel Sabotage to be delightfully helpful in so many games with the Bolas deck. I think I'll give it a whirl here too.

mental misstep is a good counter, hardly not the best. but, it is specially strong against black based deck which i find nin to have a bad match-up against that color. being able to counter a first turn thoughtseize really helps! and as always free counters are good right? also, about all is dust its a solid removal which our colors doesn't provide much solid removal. same with karn.. i haven't have problems casting them the 7 mana really is stiff. but by the time you reach 7 mana you are most likely controlling the game and just needed an back up plan if something might go wrong. btw, karn is my other wincon as of jace and my creature base beat up.
its nice to know you add up your personal touches with your decks. makes each deck more personal and diverse
So I took your list Hruen in the OP into my Commander events (similar to Duel-Commander though not the exact same) on Magic Online (with a couple of changes for personal preference). Round 1 my opponent no-showed, but Round 2 was a fascinatingly clutch game versus Doran, the Siege Tower in which I lost g1, but came back to win g2 and g3. G2 I won because I had so many cycling answers that I could keep gas while my opponent unfortunately mull'd to five. I Drake'd his Bob and he couldn't find an answer to it in time. G3 he tutoured for Loxodon Smiter t2, played t3 which would have been a problem but I EoT Mystical --> Ruination and well...you know how Doran loves his nonbasics. The game kept on, I played Nin and ate four, then he bashed, I blocked and drew 4, Ancestral came off suspend and it's academic by now. I bounced Smiter and he did come back down a couple turns later, but by then I came with a Moon followed by my own pet big drop, Stormtide Leviathan, which finally stopped Smiter from punching me in the face. The list I played is here.
From the OP, I opted for Anger of the Gods over Sudden Demise, and Pyroclasm over Bonfire of the Damned. I don't own a Bonfire but my reasoning for that change is sometimes I just need to sweep the board for two mana. Of note I'm playing two more nonbasics than you; Kher Keep and Riptide Laboratory. Though I never drew Riptide, it's there to reuse Clique, Snapcaster, Venser, or save Nin/Lavamancer from impending removal.
I don't own Force of Will so I opted for Foil in it's place. It's terrible, but it has it's merits to save our butts until one can acquire Force. I also don't own a Shackles online (though I do IRL) so I ran Control Magic in it's place. Also of note, I don't recall ever wishing for a Stifle effect, but this could be a symptom of not enough games played yet.
Very nice game reports. Too bad about that Rd 1 opponent not showing up though.
I can't wait to sleeve up my deck now that you all gave lots of match reports. There's still a few cards on my list that I need to acquire first though.
I've tested mental misstep on my other deck and just found it dead in my hand lots of times, but since Nin is a different type of deck altogether, I will definitely try that. I do have a Karn so I will also test him. But for all is dust I think I will use Oblivion stone for the meantime, as I traded away my all is dust last year.
3drinks do you mind going over what you swapped for what? also how was runechanters pike?
Lem'me see if I can remember everything.
I know I drew Pike one game (g1) and it was the beginning. I lost that game anyway. He stuck a Seal of Primordium early (which I don't really care about) but I would have to deal with the Seal before using Pike, if I had gotten to that point. That was the only time I drew it.
I should swap Psionic Blast for Char, though that may not be necessary.
I'd like to give Curse of the Swine a test, though I doubt it's better than my current sweepers (I don't want to spend that much mana on my own turn unless it's a Stormtide or something lmao).
Everything

I can't wait to sleeve up my deck now that you all gave lots of match reports. There's still a few cards on my list that I need to acquire first though.
I've tested mental misstep on my other deck and just found it dead in my hand lots of times, but since Nin is a different type of deck altogether, I will definitely try that. I do have a Karn so I will also test him. But for all is dust I think I will use Oblivion stone for the meantime, as I traded away my all is dust last year.

MTGS Olde Name:
Hruen (apparently it was taken, probably by me about 10 years ago.........)
Turn/Burn --> Steel Sabotage (T&B is too mana heavy and Sabotage is an alarmingly efficient pet card of mine. I've bounced equips, countered Tangle Wires, it's just so damned good.)
Prophetic Bolt --> Runechanter's Pike (The one game I drew Pike, it wouldn't have mattered if that Pike was P-Bolt, the outcome would have been the same.)
Sudden Demise --> Anger of the Gods
Bonfire of the Damned --> Pyroclasm (I just want to make sure I can sweep on t2.)
Desolate Lighthouse --> Kher Keep
Cephalid Coliseum --> Riptide Laboratory
Wasteland --> Dust Bowl (I don't own a Wasteland but if I did I'd play it before Dust.)
True-Name Nemesis --> Prognostic Sphinx (I don't own True-Name, but I didn't miss it either. Sphinx is just my homie like that, lol. Reliable.)
Aetherling --> Stormtide Leviathan (I just love this guy. Moat effect, unblockable finisher, free colour fixing. And hey, you get to beat people with an awesome, big ass Leviathan.)
Vedalken Shackles --> Control Magic (with my credit for winning, I should be able to just barely afford Shackles.)
Force of Will --> Foil (Because I'm poor and can't afford a $115 FoW online.)
I should swap Psionic Blast for Char, though that may not be necessary.
I'd like to give Curse of the Swine a test, though I doubt it's better than my current sweepers (I don't want to spend that much mana on my own turn unless it's a Stormtide or something lmao).
