Savage Punch seems good since it allows Thrun to fight Titans (and survive for an extra 1G). Strong removal option (more reliable than Ulvenwald Tracker although Tracker could still be played obv).
The new 5/3 legendary from C14 could go in as well, although it is most likely better as a commander (admittedly, I am turned hot for that as commander).
I played a similar list today and one C14 card that is really bad for Thrun is in Arcane Lighthouse. I lost two games to that card. I think Pithing Needle should be on the list, there are a lot of juicy targets for it.
Also, True Name Nemesis is really a bad card for Thrun.. Is there a cheap way for mono green to kill it?

I'm not as concerned about Lighthbouse because I play all the stone rains I can. That said Pithing Needle is a good add anyway. Been awhile since I've updated though.
Sword does not deal with it (protection from a player means can't be blocked by, targeted by, or dealt damage by creatures, spells, or abilities controlled by the named player).
Sure, but Protection from blue prevents TNN from blocking Thrun.
Depending on the opposing deck's contents (U or XUB), I'd rather have Sword of Body and Mind since that makes additional bodies to strap the sword to next. Obv don't play it if you're against Karador or Dimir Reanimator, but you get what I mean.
It's a good card, but I'm wondering if with the advent of Arcane Lighthouse, and the creation of Titania, Protector of Argoth, if Titania is just now better than Thrun. Serious question.
As 80% of the competitive decks play counterspells and/or combo, IMHO Thrun is still a better choice than Titania, thanks to its counterproof aspect and to the denial included in the pack, which gives you a chance against combo decks.
I personally added Savage Punch to the pack at the moment the card became legal, as a second Prey Upon that helps me against fast big creatures decks (MW, reanimator, etc.) and fast growing creatures (Jenara, Animar...).
I took out Oxidize for Savage Punch. My list isn't updated and I am slowly trying to update the thread. Finals are coming up though so don't expect it too soon. I played a couple sets today. Man has the game changed. Narset and Sidisi are powerful and so are some of the conspiracy generals.
Guys really.. Dack Fayden into Treasure Cruise into Dig through time. Is this real life right now?
Hi Bbearz and everyone! I'm also playing with Thrun as my commander.
It started out as a casual deck a year ago just so I can play 1v1 with a friend. It consisted of Thrun, all the mana dorks and ramps I could get and all the auras and equipment I readily have. It was clunky but so much fun to play with. Pretty soon I started gravitating from Legacy towards Duel Commander mainly because I found the format more enjoyable. What started as a budget build slowly turned into a competitive one. I came upon your primer and it gave me a lot of insights for card choices and play style.
Since then my deck has evolved from a purely Voltron approach, to a then heavy land destruction approach. And after many playtesting, metagaming and tournaments I'm currently having fun with this build of balanced low cost auras/equipments, low cost land destruction/disruption and fight cards. The average CMC of the deck is 2.12.
I opted for a low CMC build because I like using Winter Orb and Static Orb. If they don't come out I find myself using Dustbowl and the Crucible of Worlds/Life from the Loam/Wasteland combo more and more often. I also like keeping 2 mana open for regeneration, instant "Naturalizes" and Trackers fight ability. Incidentally the low mana curve makes the deck fast and favorable against opposing land destruction, Armageddon, Parallax Tide and Gaddock Teeg. Although I must admit I miss Plow Under.
My difficult match-ups are reanimator/combo decks which happen to be the top decks now in Manila. Currently my way to delay them is with Pithing Needle and Phyrexian Revoker naming Necrotic Ooze, or tutoring for my Scavenging Ooze. I recently added Noxious Revival to deny the opponent of a graveyard target and have yet to test it.
So far I've been having top 4 finishes in small tournaments, and with a little more fine tuning and playtesting hopefully I can make more consistent game plays. The second leg of the Philippines Duel Commander Super Series is in a week and I'm super excited about it. Lookin' foward for a decent finish and "trolling" the top players so let me know what you guys think.;)
I played against b10h4z4rd_j05h many times, and he likes those shuffle to library art/ench hate spells better, as we have a lot of Marath and Prossh players who have Xenagod, and Purphoros in their lists. He has Riding the Dilu Horse in his list too, which works better for him, as he is always on the General damage beatdown plan, while denying your mana resources.
Become Immense looks like an interesting good finisher and surprise blocker kill, how is it in your playtesting?
I recently removed Song of the Dryads because it doesn't have synergy with the mana denial plan and opted for more fight cards, but I really miss it's versatility as a 2nd Beast Within. Some issues I had with "fight" is that it's always dependent with Thrun on the battlefield, and Thrun by himself can't deal with Titans and other bigger creatures. In situations when I'm facing Ezuri, Renegade Leader, Liliana of the Veil, Sword of Feast and Famine, Griselbrand and all the Titans I'm always hoping I had Song instead. Sooo... yes I think being mono-green I have to put it back in.:p
I'm curious how both land's "comes into play tapped" drawback affect the deck's tempo since every mana is important on the 1st three turns which ideally is:
T1: Forest, Dork
T2: Forest, Land Destruction
T3: Forest, Thrun
Do you use just one or both cycle lands to replace Forests? Or do you use them as your 39th and 40th land so as not to affect tempo? I'm looking for the perfect balance as the lands are detrimental in the early game but huge card advantage in the mid-late when Thrun is 6 or 8 CMC to cast or you are in an attrition battle. Let me know your thoughts.:):)
I just started playing EDH again and run a thrun deck. Its still fun to play. I've gone through most of the new cards recently haven't noticed anything really worthwhile. I did think about trying Nissa, Voice of Zendikar just for the extra fodder, but not sure what I would cut. I really wish some more green land destruction.
I will say riding the dilu horse really throws people off that haven't seen the card. I carry a printed copy of the oracle text, just to prove it works that way.
ive already bought one and am waiting for the nice mailman to deliver to me
while i wait ive been telling my friends and i go like this
"i just ordered a card.. 2G sorc. target gets +2 and horsey. PERIOD. PERIOD. ill let that sink in"
its fun to look at their faces when they understand
Hi all, I haven't played Thrun in a while because I'm busy with my Izzet and Temur projects but I continuously keep an eye out for new cards for our troll. Some cards to consider are:
Somberwald Stag - 5cc removal and threat that can be tutored.
Clear Shot - 3cc instant pump and removal. Better than fight as it's one way and can also be used to surprise a Toxic Deluge for 4.
Verduruous Gearhulk for Wolfir Silverheart is interesting but it's subpar. I think Thrun can still work but I'm going to try out Radha or Skullbriar for now.
I don't think it's being updated anymore. Thrun is powerful against "fair" aggro and control decks, but lacks the disruption or speed to deal with "unfair" strategies. For example, Thrun can stabilize against Zurgo, but will be overwhelmed by Titania.

There's a lot of new cards like Song of Dryads in CM2014, Reclamation sage M15, and even Savage Punch from KTK
Any updates for mr. Thrun?
Remember the Titans
Song of the Dryads is an obv snap-include.
Reclamation Sage is strictly better than Virdian Shaman, for decks still playing that. That will go in too.
The new 5/3 legendary from C14 could go in as well, although it is most likely better as a commander (admittedly, I am turned hot for that as commander).
Steel Sabotage'ng Orbs of Mellowness since 2011.

There's no good way for us to deal with True-Name Nemesis. Can sweep it (All is Dust/Perilous Vault/Ratchet Bomb...but our most reliable option is to just go over the top of it. Rancor seems the easiest way to accomplish this, with Ring of Kalonia next in line.
Sword does not deal with it (protection from a player means can't be blocked by, targeted by, or dealt damage by creatures, spells, or abilities controlled by the named player).

Hi PtaQ! Thanks!:) It still needs tweaking and playtesting though.
About Deglamer and Unravel the Aether, I find shuffling effects better than destroy. As KriggY and Sharky_the_sharkdog both have said, at 2 mana it hits indestructibles such as Xenagos, God of Revels and Purphoros, God of the Forge. It also avoids graveyard recursions via Eternal Witness, Yawgmoth's Will and Daretti, Scrap Savant.
I'm considering Krosan Grip now that I see Sensei's Divining Top in a lot of decks. Thrun now gets regularly hit by Terminus, Council's Judgement and Wrath of God.

hi!
i play a daretti list which is getting stale and im trying to get my lil bro into playing so im breeding him a thrun deck
seems fun and decent if i can get my hands into some cool cards that i dont have (like the green stone rains for example)
since its been a whole year since the last post, what do you think of the deck nowadays?
any tips ? changes to the old lists?
im trying to breed my own, but didnt think evasion was so important.. this thread reallly helps !

Verdurous Gearhulk - It's like Wolfir Silverheart but the counter stays.
With the Duel Commander rules change to 20 HP effective this November let's see if trolling is still viable.
