Hey there, I've been looking for a mono blue EDH deck to play that's a bit off the beaten path and found your excellent primer. I hope you do agree that imitation is in fact the sincerest form of flattery
Anyways, what I was wondering about, what do you think of Torpor Orb? It is 2 mana in a main phase, but it doesn't hurt this deck at all while potentially neutering enemy creatures.
Also, while the meta I'm playing in is basically purely 1on1, it does use the normal ban list and normal commander rules (40 life, tucking possible, ..). Consequently I can't use Emrakul. I was wondering with what to replace him, right now I'm considering Blightsteel Colossus.
another option could be a hexproof or shroud fattie.
Hexproof or shroud would be nice, but with 40 life the leviathan needs too long and has not much else going for it (such as annihilator). I think I will try Blightsteel since I have him and will get Ulamog should he proove unsatisfactory. He does kill in one swing tho if they can't block or if I can bounce the blocker.
Edit: sorry if I'm hijacking your thread a little and thanks for the win statistics and general advice
I've often considered abandoning the Emrakul plan, so it's a worthwhile conversation. In the initial decklist, I had Vendilion Clique and Snapcaster Mage and I do dearly miss them. Teferi, Mage of Zhalfir would be wonderful to add as well if I ever pulled out Polymorph.
There's also a large number of games in which I hit 10 or 11 mana, but not 15. So it's worth considering the other guys. Blightsteel Colossus I've not really considered. It's rare my opponent will have a board empty of creatures, and in scenarios in which I'm getting more than one swing in with one of these guys, even Annihilator 4 should get the job done after two swings.
It is counterintuitive, but Arcane Laboratory actually hurts me more than it helps.
For whatever reason (and, usually these reasons are Stasis, Winter Orb, and/or Static Orb), my opponents aren't often playing a ton of spells on their turn. And even if they are, it's likely the case that I have a ton of spells (namely, counterspells) and the mana to cast them as well.
Since I'm usually behind in board position until the card drawing gets obscene, I rely on a big turn of mine to really take control. There are a ton of games where I'm upkeep Mystical Tutoring for Temporal Mastery, or Personal Tutoring for Polymorph and then using Jace or Temple Bell to draw it and cast it that turn as well. Or I will need to cast Time Warp and have mana up for a counterspell for their counterspell of it.
Arcane Lab would be awesome against a deck like Skullbriar, which has enough low casting cost spells that they are indeed emptying their hand each turn, no matter how many cards they draw. But even then, I'd eventually have to bounce the Arcane Lab myself so I could play multiple spells per turn and take over (if I had the hand to do so). If Arcane Lab could be sacrificed at will to get rid of it, I'd use it. But as it is, it's inevitable that it will eventually be a moderate to significant burden to me as well.
What do you think about Time Stop? It can be a Time Warp that costs 1 more to cast and that lets them untap, but it also counters otherwise uncounterable things. It also might force a counter if played during an opponent's upkeep with some symmetrical draw out.
The biggest downside is of course the mana cost and that it can't really be chained with true Time Warps since the opponent gets to untap.
Edit:
Also, Isochron scepter. With the amount of draw the deck has it should not be too hard to find a fitting instant to slap onto scepter. The deck could also be adapted to include slightly more.
Current compatible cards (ignoring soft counters):
Arcane Denial
Delay
Memory Lapse
Remand
Counterspell
Echoing Truth
Into the Roil
Boomerang
Cyclonic Rift
Brainstorm
Mystical Tutor (maybe)
Muddle the Mixture
Gigadrowse
Imprinting any of the counters, bounces or Gigadrowse should give a significant advantage.
Time Stop, I am not a fan of. Letting them untap is bad, even if they can't play sorceries or artifacts or creatures. It costs 6 mana, so it can be countered just as easily as one of my 5-mana main phase time walks. And the situations in which it can counter some uncounterable spell are so few and far between that they're not worth worrying about.
Isochron Scepter is an interesting thought. Panoptic Mirror was something I tried a while back, as it can lead to infinite turns quite easily with this deck. I don't think I've ever tried scepter. Will definitely try it out.
Just had a game against Omnath. My first game with a budget version of your deck in fact. Let's just say that Isochron Scepter with Boomerang imprinted plus Static Orb is quite deliciously mean.
I had Memory Lapse imprinted at first but it seems that the copy ability of Chain of Vapor can be a detriment with scepter out (could always counter the copy, but I wanted to copy again as well).
Chain of Vapor is only worth imprinting if you expect to be bouncing your Stasis or Orb each turn.
Omnath's ways to destroy artifacts are going to be mostly sorcery-speed, with the exception of Krosan Grip. My worry for Isochron is more related to decks that can bounce/destroy it during my EOT and tie up some of my mana.
Btw, Mana Leak is often a valid card to imprint on there. Even Miscalculation has its purpose there... if you have a mana advantage, trading two mana for two mana is to your benefit.
Well the decks that would destroy scepter eot also would do so with Stasis and Orb.
I played some more games against semi-competetive Mimeoplasm and Radha decks that were a lot more monied/proxied than my deck (I prefer not to proxy although it is accepted at my LGS even in EDH tournamets).
Sadly I managed to never draw scepter once in 6 or 7 matches, which is quite astounding.
However I can see now why you don't like Time Stop. Letting the opponent untap is usually instant death.
On the matter of Blightsteel, whenever I could swing with him it was instant win either due to no blockers or bounce on blockers plus counters for removal. The only exception was when my opponent had a Phantasmal Image copying him, but Emrakul would have outright died from that.
Yeah, that's why Mana Vapors and Exhaustion are better, IMO, than Time Stop, in this deck. Even beyond the mana costs, I'd much rather give someone two or three cards from their turn, as opposed to letting them untap and preventing those card draws with Time Stop.
As for Isochron, it's just going to take a lot of testing. I like Scroll Rack a lot thus far, but given the cost and card type, it seems to sort of make sense as a card to remove to test Isochron for a bit.
ive been working on a list after being inspired by yours
have you considered bazaar of baghdad? i wondered if the non-mana producing would be worth the additional draws
i also considered running brine elemental + vesuvan shapeshifter and was curious as to your thoughts on that; its probably too slow and lets them have enough time to slowly build up and recover
reweave in addition to polymorph, using the 1-1 rules you can put kami back in the command zone (i believe)
The bar for non-mana-producing lands is really high. I initially played Maze of Ith, but found the tempo loss to be a major deterrent. I'm not sure what Bazaar of Baghdad really gets me. Discarding the cards is problematic as it makes things like Foil much less useful. I guess that could be overcome if I draw into a time walk, but even then... with say 8 time walks in the deck, I'm still going to need to draw 2 and discard 3 a handful of times before I actually dig into a time walk (on average). So I'd be losing 5 or 6 cards to gain 2 or 3.
For the creatures, Brine Elemental's effect would be very useful here (especially since it's somewhat uncounterable). But I really can't add creatures to the deck as long as I'm playing Polymorph.
You are correct about Reweave and being able to put Kami back to the command zone (though frankly, if Reweave resolves, it should hopefully be GG anyways). I used to play it, but 6 mana was an awful lot. Too slow against aggro, and too mana-intensive against control. It's good, especially because you can do it EOT and avoid 95% of the cards that actually deal with Emrakul, since they can only be played/activated in the main phase. But I don't find myself missing it.
I have some more thoughts on Blightsteel vs Eldrazi.
In the normal commander format I think Blightsteel is actually the superior choice over Kozilek and Ulamog, for two reasons:
Infect vs Annihilator - I think infect is superior. It's not rare that our finisher comes out very late game, and sacrificing 4 permanents when you have 15+ lands out is not that scary anymore. Losing on contact from 11 trampling infect damage backed up with bounces is.
Trigger vs replacent effect - this also applied to Emrakul. The graveyard shuffling from the Eldrazi titans is a trigger and can be responded to, say with Tormond's Crypt. This can make discarding yoir Eldrazi risky or impossible. Blightsteel is safe thanks to his replacement effect.
Over the course of hundreds of games, I don't think I've ever had Emrakul end up being exiled while in my grave. Given that Ulamog is a little harder to put into the graveyard due to his indestructibility, I think it's safe to ignore the replacement-vs-triggered difference. To each his own though; both big guys have their merits. I do think Blightsteel's combat capability is better, but I also think there is a moderate amount of value gained when you have to discard an Eldrazi and get to shuffle your graveyard back into your library. I'm almost always happy to do that.
I have not yet. Someone else tried it and said it was pretty good, but I just haven't been interested in doing it yet. For 6 mana in one clump I'd rather play Reweave at EOT... and even then, I ended up removing Reweave as I didn't feel like I needed more than one Polymorph.
If anything, I'd actually remove Polymorph to test Proteus Staff, and I'd bet it would perform worse - if I split it into 3 mana to play and 3 mana to activate later, I'm open to a lot of possible ways for it to be destroyed. Polymorph costs one more, but at least I can keep it relatively safe until it's time to play it and win.
I know one of the things I need to get better about with this deck is knowing when to go for the Polymorph. But it actually doesn't win me that many games. I'd hazard a guess that Stasis wins more games than Polymorph.

Yeah, I don't doubt Stasis wins more games, or that Polymorph is better (and easier to tutor), but I do like the idea of T2 general, T3, staff, T4 activate.
I'm not saying you actually need it, but I do like it more than Reweave, and I know you at least tried that out a while ago.
I do like the idea of T2 general, T3, staff, T4 activate.
I could do this now, with Mystical Tutor and Personal Tutor fetching Polymorph on turn 1... and with those I get the added bonus of being able to do something on turn 3 (but also the down side of actually needing 4 mana).
I don't foresee many decks though that would let Kami and the Staff sit on the board until activated T4. Maelstrom Wanderer is the only one I can think of as being that un-interactive until then.
Best solution here is probably to playtest getting more aggressive with the tutors and going for a T4 Polymorph. And if that does work well, move on to Proteus Staff (and perhaps stuff like Mishra's Factory).
I certainly don't advocate my current 99 as the best possible list; I'm in constant flux and looking to try new things out. Right now the cards I'm really testing are:

I have tried it and wasn't a huge fan. But for some reason, I love Mana Short. I think it comes down to:
1) 4 mana casting cost is a little stiff
2) Mana Short allows for some really cool stuff... like sucking away mana before they can pay upkeep costs (more relevant when I have Pendrell Mists in the deck). And just yesterday, I Mana Shorted someone in response to their Glissa Sunseeker activation on my Vedalken Shackles, which earned a concession right there.
It does some fun stuff... it's a Fog against Doran and a Mana Short against GAAIV. I once hard-cast Emrakul with 10 islands plus Turnabout. It could reset my board if I have a ton of lands plus Stasis. But all of these seem to be very much less useful than simply being able to Mana Short my opponent on turn 3 with Kami in play.
I'm trying very hard to lower my curve, so I'm wary of anything costing more than 2 mana. I'm also trying to raise my counterspell count. If I'm being honest, I think part of the success of this deck comes purely from 30 life points and blue counterspells. You can make the win condition whatever you like, and I just happened to choose one that I really like (Howling Mines and Time Walks and Emrakul).
mikel, i really liked your list. I had never considered making a kami deck until i saw your list; so i built off of yours. making slight changes to fit my playstyle and group.
where you have tamiyo i have tezzeret, the seeker. I cut an island for seat of the synod since i can -0 to ramp. I like being able to tutor into play any of the howling mines or if i need it shackles. how has tamiyo been? i feel like you wouldn't want both walkers in here as the 5cc is high for this deck.
i cut 2 other islands for mishra's factory and mutavault. I'm just more greedy with my mana base; i may cut mutavault for color consistency. i would keep mishra's for its artifactness when activated (don't have any other reason for that over the other)
i kept pendrell mists in where it looks like you changed it to storage matrix. i've been testing against skullbriar, rakdos, and group games [my meta]. i can see where storage matrix restricts you less, be interested in seeing what your thoughts on the switch are.
i cut spell snare and spell pierce for long term plans and snapcaster mage. i'm not a fan of restrictive counters; i always feel like i have them in hand at the wrong time. long term plans is effectively a higher costing mystical tutor. snapcaster is a boss and i feel like the risk of hitting him off polymorph was worth the risk. he just lends to so much utility.
and i don't have a jeweled amulet, and i'm running savor the moment. I'm proxying capture of jingzhou for now.
Kwiznek suggested Tezzeret and I shot it down rather quickly at the time. Indeed I hadn't considered fetching up Winter Orb or Vedalken Shackles. That is compelling. I should try that.
For Mishra's Factory, I've found that access to as much U as possible makes it not that worth it. Mostly just to absolutely ensure I can cast Kami on turn 2, and for Gigadrowse. It's very rare that a manland could have got me a Polymorph win where I couldn't otherwise have attained it.
Storage Matrix is a new addition. It costs 1 less than Pendrell Mists and basically serves a similar role. We'll see how it works. I find that I really need Winter Orb, Stasis, or Static Orb, in some matchups, and this was sadly the closest thing I could get to that.
Snapcaster is amazing in this deck for recurring time walks. But, sometimes you just need an untargetable 15/15. Most times actually. Polymorphing Snapcaster up seems like an awful disappointment, especially since you've burned 4 mana on the Polymorph in your main phase. Unless you're playing a no-counter deck and have 9 mana and a time walk in the grave.
Long Term Plans has been hit or miss. If I am drawing 3 cards per turn, it's awesome. But, I'm usually winning those games. If I'm drawing 2 or 1 card per turn, it's awful, it's card disadvantage, and I hate it. Really torn about it... this deck is tailor-made for it, but it just seems kind of win-more.
Wipe Away is on my list for sure. Eye of Nowhere seems terrible... it's sorcery speed so you can't EOT-bounce Stasis and the like.
If you've got Snapcaster in there already, why not go whole-hog and remove Emrakul and Polymorph too? Put Vendilion Clique and Venser in their place. There's definitely something to be said for that approach. I haven't tried it in a LONG time, but Snapcaster and Vendilion are fantastic in this deck.
another option could be a hexproof or shroud fattie.
