With the newly minted cEDH forums, I decided that it would be appropriate to post a couple of Primers so that future cEDH'ers can get an idea of what a Primer will look like and how they can interact on MTGSal. I hope that this Primer is a good example of the type of content we're looking for!
I edited the thread to more accurately reflect the influence of Laboratory Maniacs User Cameron and his threat assessment analysis. Cameron was the first user to articulate the way I personally think about a Commander game and I would be absolutely remiss if I didn't give credit where credit is due.
List looks pretty good, and the primer layout seems good.
One thing that jumped out at me in particular is having Snapcaster in the cards to test but not Mission Briefing, have you not considered it at all, or is just because Snap has some utility with phulk?
@BloodyWednesday
Thanks for the compliments! Much appreicated.
For this list and strategy, bodies are much more preferred over isntants and sorceries. I'm looking to maximize the synergies between Skullclamp, Gaea's Cradle, and Survival of the Fittest and the rest of the deck. And since these cards all prefer creatures over sorceries and instants, I've tweaked my list accordingly. Mission Briefing is an excellent card, and is in fact run by Cameron in his Tasigur Control cEDH list (which I reference in the credits section of the Primer) as a way to run a Snapcaster effect without being vulnerable to creature removal.
I love that the Briefing doesn't allow your opponents an opportunity to exile the card you want to flashback, since it happens on resolution of the Briefing. This could be relevant for your playgroup, depending on what type of grave hate you're experiencing.
And I appreciate you pointing out the fact that Snappy has synergy with Hulk too. It's a peripheral interaction, but it would probably come up in a game or two.
Thanks for chiming in! Do you have a list you've been playing for Tasigur?
The other benefit of Mission > Snapcaster is that you can do things like tutor something up with Vampiric Tutor or Mystical Tutor, then use Briefing to dump it on the grave and cast it. But the tech with Survival probably does make snappy better in your case.
Ooo, I like the Tidespout Tyrant option. Due to the heavy inclusion of instants, Tidespout sounds like consistent removal that can also hit lands for tempo gains. Gah. Not enough room in the deck...
Looking at your list, I'm interested in the inclusion of Grafdigger's Cage it's an excellent piece of hate for Flash Hulk and other 'yard based combos. How has it performed for you? Have you considered running Trinket Mage to have an additional way to tutor for it consistently?
Otherwise, I really like your list a lot. I'm thinking about hijacking my second post to put an additional Primer that features Cameron's Control Tasigur list/Primer. I think it's a super strong option for cEDH and is another way to engage the Tasigur community. I'll try and reach out to him and see if he's willing to allow it!
Grafdigger's Cage is just such a great hate piece at a very low opportunity cost. Besides Flash it also hits things like storm, Yisan, and Yawgmoth's Will. It's more of a flex spot right now since I haven't really played at the new LGS, but it's a good blind choice.
Tidespout can also bounce my around Sol Ring, Vault, and Crypt with a signet to generate infinite colored mana to go off so it should be decent. As a sidenote there were some other versions of Tasigur that used Oath of Druids to rush out Tidespout and do the above to win.
I wouldn't run Trinket Mage though. I don't want it in every game, and the deck should have enough interaction where it isn't super important. The only other targets for it would be the 0 and 1 cmc rocks, but that would feel kinda slow. It works better in things like PW Teferi since it doesn't have black, the rocks are combo pieces and it can also grab the cage or voltaic key.
It sounds like Cameron's going to do the work of creating the Tasigur Control Primer himself!
Your reasoning makes sense, in regards to Trinket Mage. It's an efficient spell in mono-U but can be less optimal in Tasigur because of the access to actual tutor effects.
Good luck at your new LGS! One thing that's nice about Tasigur is that you can adjust your playstyle to what everyone else is doing and instead fit into a more Control seat. This allows you to be flexible to the group you're playing around without compromising the efficacy of your decklist generally. Banana Man is good at what he does.
And thanks, just got back from playing a few games. Players seem to be a bit more on the casual spectrum what I have seen, and I it looks like I will be cutting Grafdiggers, Mnemonic, and Seeds. Not sure what I will slot in yet though...
Into more comp pots Mnemonic should still be good as a value play since other people will have been wheeling or using strong cards, but I have not been able to really test it in that scenario.
Sounds like a good meta to play in; you'll be able to play to win more frequently than normal, which is always a good feeling to have.
In other news, for a total jank combo that could have a huge payoff, I've thought about Verity Circle and NAture's Revolt. It's an way to slow down the table AND draw a bajillion cards. However, it's not very mana inefficient. Could this combo have legs?
So I've actually been using Cameron's mana base with this deck and it is way smoother. Having way more fetch lands and more that can get green has been much improved.
I actually got some games in at my LGS, and there are a ton of updates coming for this list. I lost every game I played but learned some valuable lessons from it all. I played against Shuffle Hulk, Rakdos Storm, Mono-Red LD, and Oona Combo. It turns out that an opening hand Leyline of the Void is REALLY bad for this deck since every combo line depends on the 'yard in some form or fashion. It might have been just a bad experience, but that kind of inherent weakness to Leyline or the more common Rest in Peace is troubling.
Ok, so there's been a pretty substantial overhaul of the deck after talking with my cEDH best friend and from the gameplay experiences yesterday I had. They were all painful (losing to Shuffle Hulk before I even got to play my 2nd land and going down to 10 life from a mono-Red LD deck with a Turn 0 Leyline of the Void in G2). There were cards that were dead in hand in both games and, even after Wheeling twice I still didn't draw into any answers. Kind of a bitter feeling.
So, the changes are mostly in regards to the mana package and cutting some clunky pieces that don't help the early/mid-game as well as a small change to the mana base to make it a bit more streamlined.
Animate Dead hasn't really done a whole lot in the games I've actually played. In the late-game it would probably be good, but I have to get there first. This was cut in favor of adding in Trickbind.
Fellwar Stone was cut for Incubation Druid. It was never tutored for during the Razaketh lines of play and the Druid has the ability to become a Gilded Lotus in the mid/late-game while also pushing the primary creature synergies of the deck.
Gilded Lotus is a VERY expensive mana rock. And I can't really accelerate into it very rapidly or consistently. This was cut in favor of Priest of Titania, which I can cast consistently and also scales depending on the number of Elves in play (read: usually 2+, including herself).
Arbor Elf is in because I want more T1 sources of mana and Wood Elves just felt bad.
Lim-Dul's Vault is better for this deck than Carrion Feeder. I'd rather have redundancy in my tutor effects than in my combo pieces.
Brainstorm comes in because it's a way to get combo pieces into the library while being a not bad Tasigur recursion in the mid/late-game. Rhystic Study comes out because everyone knows to play around it now and Mystic Remora is just better at taxing spells for draw effects. The LGS meta has shifted towards Storm and Shuffle Hulk decks, all of which are more spell-heavy decks.
Training Grounds is cut for Biomancer's Familiar officially. It's a functional replacement, but I will be watching to see if the fleshy 2 CMC of the Familiar is a big difference to the 1 CMC enchantment. I like that the Familiar pushes the synergies of the deck more in theory, but we'll see how it does in practice.
Shadow of Doubt is back in the deck due to the rise of Storm and Hulk decks. There are no longer any good targets for Phantasmal Image anymore, so it gets cut.
Praetor's Grasp adds another semi-tutor/hate piece instead of the unusually clunky Muldrotha, the Gravetide. While I will miss Muldrotha, Tasigur does a decent impression of recurring the same cards that Muldrotha recurs, so I free up some deck space and add in another tutor effect that can snipe out win conditions occasionally.
Phyrexian Tower and Volrath's Stronghold are just not good lands. This deck is VERY color hungry, and I can't really afford to have too many lands that don't tap to add colors. I added in a fetch-land to compensate and Bloom Tender. The Tender also has the fun ability to fuel the Dramatic Scepter combo line all by herself.
Caustic Caterpillar was another card that was dead in my hand in one of the games. I would have MUCH preferred having Nature's Claim instead.
EDIT: The OP list has been updated to reflect these changes.
After talking with SickRobot and the efficacy of Phyrexian Delver as a card, I think I can safely cut it, especially since Body Snatcher is just more effective for the combo (doubles as a way to get a combo piece to the 'yard).
So, this means I have a slot open currently. I really want to run a piece of 'yard hate since there's a Shuffle Hulk that's now being played at my LGS and I want to have a clean maindeck answer to it. The question is whether or not Faerie Macabre or Extirpate is the correct choice. I like that Extirpate has Split Second to get rid of the Eldrazi titan with its shuffle trigger on the stack regardless of interaction or a flashbacked Memory's Journey, but Faerie Macabre has more synergy with the deck as a whole and can be tutored via Survival while also being difficult to interact with.
I've been playing some kind of combination of your deck and Cameron's recently trying to find a happy medium. Maybe trickbind? I'm trying that out now so I'll report how that goes.
Excellent. Trickbind is already in the maindeck currently. It's fantastic at stopping a significant number of Combos right in their tracks. Off the top of my head, it stops Teferi Chain Veil, Hulk decks, Gitrog combo, Reanimator strategies (admittedly a fringe strategy nowadays), and is decent disruption against Storm decks using Yawg Will effects/Snapcaster.
After some internal debate, I've decided for Faerie Macabre for the time being because it pushes the primary synergies of the deck while also being free to activate if I recur it via Tasigur's ability.
Decklist Change:
+ Macabre

EDIT: I also should have about 4 hours this coming weekend to play some cEDH, depending on how the week plays out.
Here is the list I've been running for a while now and I really like how smoothly it plays out. Let me know if you have any suggestions. Only test card right now is runic armasaur but not sure what to cut out. http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/tasigur-elixir/
The card that jumps out to me is Thousand-Year Elixir. What's your reasoning behind including that card? Is it to give your mana dorks global pseudo haste? Or is it included as another way to combo with Engine?
It stands out as a card you could cut since Card Advantage is more important to your list. Have you thought about Verity Circle as well?
Also, have you found the Engine package to be relevant/better than the Flash Hulk package?
I put in Thousand year elixir since every time I hit a big ad nauseum but no isochron combo I had to wait an extra turn and that kind of sucked. Helps a lot when I can win with just mana dorks. I'll try the circle out that's a good suggestion. I think the engine package is a little more consistent since you won't usually have dead pieces in hand.
I'm sorry I've been out of these forums for a while. Marital issues came up and everything else has been put on hold.
I like the idea of Caustic Caterpillar in theory but in practice it hasn't been so good. In the two times I can recall casting it, the Caterpillar either didn't matter a whole ton or my opponents were able to combo through the Caterpillar. It might have simply been bad luck both times, but I've been leery of it since there are better instant speed spells within these colors.
Ashiok, Dream Render – wow. Just wow. This card is totally awesome. It’s already seeing play in Modern in the new Dimir Mill deck and it’s even better in cEDH. Being able to have a Stranglehold in Dimir colors is absolutely fantastic for this deck, and it’s definitely getting some deck space somehow. I highly recommend this card for your Tasigur list, whether it’s a Flash Hulk variant or Cameron’s Tasigur MAN deck.
Bolas’s Citadel – this card is hella cool, and goes broken with Sensei’s Divining Top and Aetherflux Reservoir. The best comparison I can make for the card is that it’s a Black Paradox Engine, and I hope that’s convincing enough for you to take the card seriously and perhaps order a copy of it for your cEDH collection.
Narset, Parter of Veils – another fantastic card for cEDH, this card is actually not a good fit for the deck. And that’s simply because the deck is built with a heavy creature count, which Narset misses with her ability. If you have under 12 creatures, she should be a great fit for your deck, but I’ll pass on her with this current Tasigur configuration.
Finale of Devastation – this is a really interesting card that I don’t think is quite good enough in this deck, but has some really cool implications. That it can also act as a pseudo-Reanimation effect is not insignificant, and if you can Finale it (x = 10), then you can probably take out a player or two with the mana dork count in the deck. Which would be hilarious!
Narset’s Reversal – this card is very interesting to me. It can win a Counter war if it needs to or protect a key instant or sorcery from Countermagic. I think it’s definitely worth testing and I recommend picking up a few copies of it if you can.
Return to Nature – this card is actually a really good card because of how flexible it is and the fact that it can act as spot ‘yard removal. I think this is a worthy budget card for Tasigur if you don’t want to run Faerie Macabre or Extirpate.
Neoform – another Eldritch Evolution effect is always welcome, particularly with Tasigur’s Delve cost making him easy to cast in the early stages of the game. While I haven’t critically analyzed which 7 CMC creatures this deck could profitably run (besides Nezahal, Primal Tide.
While it was nice to have a pseudo Counterspell for Flash Hulk combos and other tutors, the static Stranglehold provided by Ashiok is superior. Add in the fact that Ashiok also has incidental grave hate and you have a winning card design that is probably going to be a cEDH staple moving forward. This is simply a fantastic card and you should DEFINITELY get several copies for your cEDH collection. Do it.
Dropping by to see how the primer was going. Some of the changes you detailed from a while back seem pretty good! Kinda surprised you havent slotted in Narset's Reversal yet, haha

Yeah, I'm on EE, but dropped de the Razaketh, the Foulblooded lines when I added Paradox Engine and just switched his slot for Muldrotha, the Gravetide, but I'm likely switching it for Tidespout Tyrant soon, he might give more utility as being both an out and extra removal on my regular interaction.
Some of the weird card choices (ie Misdirection) are because I don't have their replacements yet.
