Since they are a "land," and they count as either a forest or an island (eg tropical island), and these cards predate lands being labeled not as "land," but "basic land" and "land," I am not certain on one key piece of the rule.
In a Commander deck, could I have multiples of old dual lands? I run a 5 color deck, so easy (and quick) access to multiple land types is of mega importance.
I don't play tournament play, but I do usually follow the rules--in accordance to what the cards themselves specify. I'm not all that interested in re-reading ruling for thousands of cards, especially considering the age of my collection (back to 1993).
I get into fights about my early Conservator on that note... 3:Prevent 2 damage vs 3,tap: prevent 2 damage.
I am not entirely sure where you are coming from. As you mentioned, they are not basic lands. The fact that the original basics were not printed with "Basic" on the type line doesn't change the fact that they are basics now. Only basic lands (and specificexceptions) are allowed to have multiples in a deck. Since they are not basic lands, you can have one of each in a 5 color deck. In a 2 color deck, you can only have one. In a 3 color deck you can have 3. In a 4 color deck you can have 7.
As for Conservator, the oracle text says to tap it. This mirrors the original functionality since it was printed as a "Mono" artifact which means you can use it once per turn cycle. I am not sure which side of the debate you are on, but if you are trying to pay 6 mana at one time to prevent 4 damage, you are incorrect.
Whenever in doubt about a card, always check the Oracle text. It is the definitive wording on a card and if it conflicts with the printed wording, the Oracle text takes precedence.
Odd. I could swear that my conservator does not say "mono artifact," but says 3:prevent 2 damage. I'll have to look at that again. Devil is in the details...

Thanks for clearing up the multiland detail.
