So last night we did an 11 person cube draft. Bobthefunny ended up drafting Recurring Nightmare. In the first game he had it paired with Monastery Mentor, and in the second I believe it had backup from Avenger of Zendikar. Afterward I asked if there was anything that was too oppressive in the cube. The resounding response was RN (and Primeval Titan, but that's a discussion for a different thread). While I'm still on the fence about this card in a constructed setting where you have more ability to adjust your deck for the competition, I am still questionable about this card. Maybe after we see how players react and use Protean Hulk, we can get a better idea of how they would react to a RN unban.
Is this a multiplayer cube or a 1v1 cube? I could definitely see it being oppressive in 1v1 (it certainly is in the 1v1 non-EDH cube I play at times).
Now, while all of the things I mentioned require additional parts, I do not believe the increase in resiliency is that much of an issue with RN.
Multiplayer.
I think it largely depends on the meta, then. There are some places I play that just cannot deal with my graveyard shenanigans even though it's nothing crazier than Flayer of the Hatebound/Warstorm Surge most of the time. I think this is the type of card that can ruin games that the RC sees as the baseline, but those effects already exist. What RN does is allows this type of thing to work in higher power games where my silly Victimize/Eternal Witness/Phyrexian Altar/Deranged Hermit/Anger loop isn't viable.
And yes, I have murdered tables with infinite squirrels in actual games.

Yeah. One thing about a cube/draft environment is that it's hard to adjust properly to certain strategies. Some games you'll get lots of removal, other times you won't. In a sense, this mimics real life because you'll occasionally play against people who don't properly value spot removal and graveyard hate. And even though you can make metagame adjustments in closed groups, this won't always happen and you won't always be in closed groups.
I think that encouraging people to run more yard hate is hardly a bad thing regardless, so in that sense I don't think that the Problematic Casual Omnipresence is necessarily a bad thing (even if I think it would absolutely happen and be a discussion point).

I find that Wake the Dead and Victimize when paired with an Eternal Witness/Archaeomancer/Xiahou Dun, the One-Eyed do a pretty good approximation of RN and it's not bad. As for Kokusho/Gary, Chainer, Dementia Master works as a RN substitute.

Multiplayer.
