It's been a while since I played MtG. In august last year I tried picking up Commander again as it used to be my favorite format. Few mates and I triedto get back together, but busy schedules kept us from meeting up.
Fast forward to past friday. I joined a gaming club near my hometown. It hosts all kind of games but Guild Ball and MtG lured me in. MtG wise, several formats are present, including Commander. I suggested playing some pauper Commander but people were a bit reluctant. (Sad face)
As the evening goes by a friendly gentleman approaches me and tells me they do host some budget nights restricting total deck cost to 25 € (including commander and basics).
I decided to pick up on the challenge as my eyes fell on Alesha Who Smiles At Death. Thus I am now turning to the online community for some cool ideas, hidden obscure gems or general advice.
Back in the days I used to play control decks. Yet I'd like to stear away from those for now. My main idea would be a creature based toolbox deck that can win occasionally.
One card that often does a lot of work in my Alesha deck is Duergar hedge-mage, as you're likely to get at least one of the two triggers, and Alesha means you can play him more than once. Given the budget though, it might already be outside of the price range. sling-gang lieutenant is another card that's pretty good, especially because it comes with its own sac-outlet for repeated plays. If you can combine it with some other goblin-generating creatures (like beetleback chief or ponyback brigade) you get the ability to quickly swarm the board with creatures and use those to gain a lot of life and hurt your opponents.
Actually, let me just post my Alesha deck here. It wasn't build to be super-budget, and I won't claim to be the best deck-builder out there, but it might give you some inspiration. https://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/alesha-aggrocombo-1/
Alesha is a commander I've been brainstorming an all common version for a while now. Here's what I have thus far. Note that it's all theory crafting at this point and needs further playtesting. Cards like Arcane Signet, Ash Barrens, and Path of Ancestry push it over your price limit but I'm sure you could replace those with Fellwar Stone, Nomad Outpost, or similar cards. Staple uncommons like Buried Alive and Skullclamp would also be nice additions if you can find a way to fit them into your budget.
That's an interesting list, I'll need to take a look through it alter to see if there's anything I could add to my own deck. One other card that's surprisingly budget and pretty useful for Alesha is key to the city. It allows Alesha to swing safely, even against a crowded board while at the same time allowing you to discard a useful card for reanimation. And on untapping it the next turn you could pay a bit of mana to draw another card if you need to.
Thanks for the input. I love reading your content. This comprehensive list might be a good starting point.
Indeed, the budget is quite narrow. I made a first draft with some card I already own but I was quickly heading towards the pricelimit. Who knew some commons have such a high value ^^
