So I would really like to have a Gaea's Cradle but don't have the money to buy one until I recently discovered gold border cards which are much cheaper but they are not tournament legal. My local LGS has commander on Friday where we sign a slip with our name and DCI then they randomly create pods and then we play. would it be illegal to play with the gold border card? (there are no prizes or anything it's all just for fun, plus I've seen a couple of others with gold border cards as well) do you guys think it's alright to play with those cards?
It depends on your LGS. I have a gold bordered Gaea's Cradle in one of my decks but I have a real Cradle in one of my other decks in case someone balks. It really just depends on what your local is willing to support. Ask them.

If your lgs/group is fine with the then it's not a problem. I run a gold border card in one of my decks and I may pick up another one and my group is fine with it.
Oh, you have no idea the pandora's box you've opened...
Officially gold-bordered cards are not legal for sanctioned play. For unsanctioned play...well, it's whatever people are cool with.
In my personal opinion, they're equivalent to proxies, and iirc they're actually quite expensive considering (isn't cradle like $50?). So I'd just proxy it instead of buying a gold-bordered version. I am fine with people playing proxies, usually. But you should ask your group. If other people are playing with gold-bordered cards, but not printout proxies, then maybe that's the line they've drawn. In which case, maybe it's worth it to you to spend however much they cost.
If you're giving your DCI number to participate in an event at your LGS, then that event is sanctioned.
Part of playing in a sanctioned event, even one without a tournament structure or prizes, is a tacit agreement that you're playing with real Magic cards.
If it's discovered that the store is letting players play in such sanctioned events with cards that aren't real, then the store could face penalties from Wizards and the WPN up to losing their right to host any sanctioned Magic events at all.
Gold-bordered cards aren't Magic cards and shouldn't be treated as such, like DirkGently said. You can play them in your unsanctioned games if your playgroup is cool with that, but when you bring them into your LGS for sanctioned events, you're really playing with fire and should just get the real card.
