I do not appreciate this stupid company toying with my emotions like this. "We're dead! Sayonara!"......"We're back! You now belong to this other mindless conglomerate, and we'll see how far their give-a-***** takes you before you're back to step 1. Good luck and enjoy that twitch account we forced upon you all!"
I'm personally out. MTGS is home, sure, but **** am I ready to move out. I haven't really been enthused any of the changes made in the last few years (don't care for twitch or the deckbuilder), so I'll take the leap. Worst come to worst, I'll be back if the new site nosedives. But unless you make me subscribe to another totally unrelated service just to use the new platform, I doubt I shall return.
P.S. to those designing the new site, pleasepleaseplease don't make me jump through stupid hoops like Curse did. I don't want to attach my nonexistant Facebook to my account or integrate any other crap into a process that should not extend beyond email-> username-> password-> confirmation email code.
I just created an account on the test site and it's exactly as simple as you hope it is! It's still in testing mode and I've been invited to be a Mod on the new site, and I can promise that the new site is intuitive, brighter and easier to read on the eyes, and is formatted in a great way.

Man, one of the things I really want is a dark theme like we used to have here. Is there any plan to give us something like that?
As for the current situation, I have to agree with others that it kind of sucks. It pulls the user base into two different directions so the fate of both sites are up in the air. How many people will stay? How many will leave? Will MTGNexus be as robust as it could be if MTGSalvation weren't still around?
For me, I was already locked into moving to a new site and the fact that this site is now staying doesn't really change that. I have my plans to recreate my deck list threads on the new site, while not moving old ones I never really use. I even have plans for at least 2 primers; one of which is basically already written.
I like the idea of "starting over" somewhere else. It seems that a lot of people (or, at least the mods) feel like the new site is the way to move forward and I am going to make that my primary place to post and discuss various topics. I will likely keep up with both for the first 6 months to a year just in case MTGNexus takes a bit to get off the ground. But, once it seems like it has enough traffic, I will likely move over there entirely.
This is the only MTG Forum I use and I don't really want to keep up with two and I am excited about what can be done on the new site considering changes seemed to stagnate here. The deckbuilder was a big one for me; it seemed to get created and then forgotten about. Perhaps the new owner will provide more changes to things at a faster rate, but I have more confidence in the new site than I do in this one changing.
If the whole situation taught me anything, it's that i would not be happy if MTGS would be sold/closed/complicated out of a sudden again.
With this warning shot in mind i'll happily focus my attention on the new project to come!
Best case we'll get an independent home that'll feel just like MTGS or better.
Keep up the spirit, i'm exicted for anything to come!
I'm looking forward to a new hub for Magic players, where there is a chance to be more involved with elements that we want as enthusiasts reading about stuff, potential content creators, or just talking smack about Magic.
Personally whenever I asked for something technical to be done to help me, the admins were on it as soon as they could. So I know that it's a team of people that really do care about the experience.
That's not to say a good team of people might come onto MTGSal, but my guess is that trying to ask for new functionality here as a user is really not going to happen anytime soon, really if at all.
At the end of the day it is a relatively small group of people that are consistently leaving comments on the MTGSal forums for commander, so it will suck that a group of people will be divided even smaller.
But hopefully as time goes on, because it's a place created by people that care about advancing the content and experience, that it's going to feel more like a dedicated website from the users themselves.
I'm going to be on both. If I find that I don't like doing that, I'll choose Nexus. Staff administered by people I trust and not tied to the *****ty platforms Sally is.

Onering's 4 simple steps that let you solve any problem with Magic's gameplay
Whether its blue players countering your spells, red players burning you out, or combo, if you have a problem with an aspect of Magic's gameplay, you can fix it!
Step 1: Identify the problem. What aspect of Magic don't you like? Step 2: Find out how others deal with the problem. How do players deal with this aspect of the game when they run into it? Step 3: Do what those players do. Step 4: No more problem. Bonus: You are now better at Magic. Enjoy those extra wins!
I will probably be on both sites and initially stick with one. Salvation has been a home for nearly a decade (for me) so it will be tough to say goodbye. However nexus is being run by community members I have grown to adore. Sure I may not always see eye to eye with them, but in the end they are what has kept this community flowing. When nexus is finally open I will indeed check it out.
I would love it if MTGNexus were to have more standardized BBCode. Or, even better, if we would be able to format our posts using HTML/CSS. This sort of thing would be particularly useful for primers.
Speaking of primers, I think with the unavoidable community split caused by MTGSalvation staying open, it would be a good idea to have Nexus hit the ground running. It would likely be a good idea to reach out to primer creators and such and have popular content already migrated and ready to go on Nexus as soon as it goes live.

Just out of curiosity, what isn't standardized about the BBCode here?
Also, I agree on the inclusion of HTML/CSS if possible as long as it doesn't exclude the use of BBCode. I really prefer BBCode even if it isn't quite as powerful but that is mostly because I don't like working in HTML. But, as you mentioned, there are some things BBCode won't do so having HTML as an option would be really nice (and I suppose Google can show me what I need if I really want to use it ).
Just out of curiosity, what isn't standardized about the BBCode here?
I don't remember any examples off the top of my head, but I remember running into issues when I was doing heavy primer work. There were times when certain BBCode didn't work as expected, or support for more modern tags was missing entirely. It's possible that much of this has been corrected when I wasn't looking, as I haven't really investigated it in a couple years, to be honest.
Well from my understanding, the default you get is a handful of bb codes and everything extra is add-ons. That said, feel free to let Airi or me know what you feel is missing (either currently or after zite launch) and we will work on getting it implemented.
I currently get notified of approximately 1 out of 10 things that should give me a notification. Replies and quotes almost never generate alerts, so I usually miss them. Hard to have discussions like this.
I made a bug complaint about this and someone said they would get back to me, but that was many months ago.
I am definitely hoping to move to the new site in hopes of having a site that functions better. I also want to follow the mods... it would be nice if we could get an idea of who was sticking to MTGS and who was going to the new forum.
Regarding BBCode, my Google search said the [img] tags should have allowed for a size but the tag here doesn't. I am not sure if that is because the info I had was wrong or what it was.
Also, I was, at one point, trying to come up with a way to use our own custom pop-up tags. That is, a card tag but one that allowed us to point to an image rather than using the built in images. This was mostly because of the desire to see foreign language cards in a pop-up. Or, I suppose, just having those available in the normal card tags by default.

Well there is a way to use the CARD tag to specify an individual card. I don't know offhand what sort of unique things we can do with the card tag that can't be done here, but when the new site is up I'm sure we will have a feature request and bug reporting thread, sonpleasenload us up on those requests.

The main problem is that the card tags can only seem to pull versions in the database here (anything that shows up in the search function) which the Japanese Alternate arts aren't.
This was actually a request by another user here a while back and I realized this would have solved that for them since specifying a different version doesn't work unless that version is in the database. Maybe pulling from Scryfall would be better since they always seem be updated really quickly and you don't need to worry about things being misspelled (Nurturing Peatland is a prime example here; it is misspelled as Nuturing Peatland).
I will keep in mind the Bug Tracker/Feature Request option and likely submit a couple once the site is up and running.
I may be in the minority here as someone who is a dev by profession and does (has done, I guess) primers, but I can easily say that no amount of BBCode customization will come close to what I could do with HTML/CSS in terms of making a kick-ass primer.

It would likely be a good idea to reach out to primer creators and such and have popular content already migrated and ready to go on Nexus as soon as it goes live.
That's definitely part of our plan. We'll know a little more about how it's going to look closer to the time, but the likelihood is we'll offer a primer status to any existing primer owners wanting to move to Nexus - more details on the logistics as we get closer to that, obviously.

From our dev: "Pure html is a no go for security, but I think if I work with them I can add 10 bajillion optional parameters to everything, so they basically have full access and control."
Edit: Usual disclaimer that there will be a million requests and things to work on, so not everything will be an immediate priority.

As a dev, to your dev (spoilered since 99% of people in this thread won't care):
Many modern forum post/comment submission/blog post systems and the like allow for HTML/CSS to be used. Having worked on one such system previously, without going into too much detail, I can say that it's just about running post submission through a parser and having a whitelist of tags and attributes that are considered to be safe. You strip out or reject anything offending. When I did this in the past, I used sanitize-html (granted that's only particularly useful if you're running JS server-side, like via node.js or similar, but there are guaranteed to be similar libraries for other technologies).
An alternative that I've seen done for this sort of thing is to have any HTML based posts/edits go into a review queue before they can go live, but that requires dev-savvy manpower to review them, which is meh.
I don't mind chatting with your dev one on one if you/they are interested.
But, either way, if the decision is to stick with just BBCode, I will definitely have some requests. Like, just off the top of my head after having just posted a thread, a better way to manage deck block layout (columns and such). The way that's done automatically here can be frustrating sometimes with it trying to shove everything into two columns and be super long.
I just created an account on the test site and it's exactly as simple as you hope it is! It's still in testing mode and I've been invited to be a Mod on the new site, and I can promise that the new site is intuitive, brighter and easier to read on the eyes, and is formatted in a great way.
