Hey all! Long time lurker, first time poster. You know the drill.
So my Xenagos, God of Revels deck has been feeling like it's too slow out of the gates and by the time I ramp and land a nice big fatty on the board he doesn't make much of a difference. So I thought I would try to play a more controlling style with cards like Sarkhan's Unsealing or Starstorm to control the battlefield and wipe away utility creatures, dorks and the like and make it much easier to make my big creatures count. All suggestions welcome.
Replace mana dorks with ramp spells and mana rocks?
RG is not great for control. What is your meta like?
You may need a Stax approach. Usually RG stax is with Ruric Thar, since he kills storm decks. Xenagos can't do anything by himself, which I find rough when you are a control deck. Your commander should be controlling or be a win condition.
If you are not in a meta that is too competitive, you could just drop all your small creatures and throw in Anger of the Gods, Pyroclasm, etc... but if you aren't ramping to your win, it will take you even longer to win...
Out of curiosity, why don't you want to just make your deck faster?
I know RG aren't really the premier control colors but I honestly just thought that this was an interesting idea that I hadn't seen on forums or experimented with myself. As for my meta, its fairly casual with almost no competitive tier or combo decks but I mostly play in a 3-4 man pod with LOTS of tribal ( Scion of the Ur-Dragon, Sliver Overlord, Ezuri, Renegade Leader, etc. )and control lists like Kruphix, God of Horizons and Azami, Lady of Scrolls.
I feel that Xenagos does serve as a wincon but maybe that's just me. On a near empty board Xenagos, God of Revels followed by a hasted Malignus or Atarka, World Render ends games pretty fast. But, I do like the Stax idea so maybe that's the way to go.
As for the last question, I could but I feel like that might stretch my budget a bit more than I want to. I'm already running a pretty good ramp package with dorks like Somberwald Sage and Shaman of Forgotten Ways plus the standard green land tutors.
This is not an official primer but a very good description on how the deck works by Plushpinguin. I often take a look at or.
I also built a Xenagod deck. Mine has a few sweepers in it to clear the board and then attack.
Lots of green carddraw, drawing 12+ cards is not strange.
I mostly use spell based ramp in Xenagod, since dorks activate devotion which makes him more vulnerable for removal.
